I have been investigating English education in middle schools in Japan focusing on native English teachers(Hosaka, 2012, 2017).This paper focuses on Japanese and native English teachers at Kobe middle school. English education in Kobe was highly appreciated by Soseki NATSUME.There were only two principals in Kobe middle school: Kumeichi TSURUSAKI and Tasuke IKEDA before WWII. It goes without saying that they formed the foundation of education in Kobe middle school, including that of English education.Mr. Tsurusaki decided to hire a native teacher of English to improve the quality of English education not only for the purpose of entrance exam preparations but also for its practical use.Mr. Ikeda was a Christian and started a Bible study club and continued English education even during wartime(1941-1945).Many young Japanese teachers of English started to work very hard there to make Kobe middle school prestigious for high school entrance exams. Also many young native teachers of English did the same and later went on to work at many other middle schools or universities.

This article aims to consider possibilities of studies focusing on transnational media and communication practices of ethnic minorities through an historical exploration of the media and communication networks of the Korean diaspora in East Asia. Diasporas have often been pioneers in adopting cutting-edge technologies in their media practices. Furthermore, it is a subject of growing political and social importance to analyze which aspects of transnational communication diasporic and migrant populations use to stay connected with their homeland. However, in Japan, there has been little research on the topic to date, and it could even be said that such a perspective has been lacking. By focusing on the production and consumption of media cultures by the Korean diaspora in their past and present, we can receive new insights into the areas of cultural politics and identity construction of migrant and diasporic populations in which their identity has been constantly represented, contested and negotiated in their everyday lives. Through this examination, I would like to emphasize a new dimension to and the possibilities for diasporic media studies in Japan.

Hepatobiliary diseases of animals are frequently diagnosed by a combination of imaging, clinical pathology, and histopathology. A standardized surgical liver biopsy protocol, however, has not been established in veterinary medicine with regard to the selection of lobe and site of the liver to yield the most diagnostic information. To address this matter, we histologically examined 33 livers of autopsied dogs from which tissue samples of 4 different lobes as well as 4 different sites of each lobe were prepared. We measured the hepatic lobular diameter (HLD) as an objective variable to refer to the inter-lobar or inter-site difference among the biopsied samples. A measurement of 2,623 hepatic lobules resulted in 1.042 mm as the average of all the HLD values. Statistical analysis further revealed that the HLD tended to be small in a superficial 2 mm area of the liver parenchyma regardless of biopsy location, thus this area should be evaluated carefully by pathologists. The results also suggest that the HLD values of the quadrate lobe may measure smaller than those in the other lobes. Therefore, one would be able to obtain representative data of the entire liver by taking a sample from any single lobe except for the quadrate lobe. HLD measurements are needed in order to accumulate potentially useful information on the microanatomy and pathophysiology of the liver.

An analysis between the atmospheric state change and lightning discharges in the autumn (from Sep to Nov. 2011 and 2016) seasons in Japan is presented in this paper. In evaluating the number of lightning activities, we calculated SSI which is used to predict thunderstorms. We confirmed that the modified SSI for the winter season can be effective for evaluating the lighting activities in the autumn season, meaning that the lighting discharges in this season tend to be affected by the low-level atmospheric state condition.

「海洋學談話會」は,農林省水産試験場の宇田道隆の発起により,海洋学に関する論著の紹介,試験研究成果の発表,および各職場の会員間の交流を目的として,1932年4月に開始された。東京・月島の水産試験場で月2 回木曜日の例会は1941年2月の172回まで続き,実講演者は80名,延べ話題提供数は506件に達した。この実績に伴う海洋学への情熱と連携の高まりによって提唱された日本海洋学会の創立は,海洋気象台(神戸)に既存していた「海洋学会」と話合いが行われたが,1937年前半に不調に帰した。その後,1939年末における標準海水準備委員会の立上げを切掛けとして,「海洋學談話會」と「海洋学会」との間に妥協が成立し,1941年1月28日に創立に至った。ここでは,「海洋學談話會」の発起,内容,切掛けおよび母体から日本海洋学会創立への紆余曲折の経緯を調べたので,関係科学者の役割も含めて報告する。キーワード:海洋 學談話會,海洋学会,日本海洋学会,宇田道隆,日高孝次

Past meteorological records are important for improving our understanding of past, present, and future climates. Imaging and digitization of historical paper-based instrumental meteorological records must be carried out before these records are lost to decay. This kind of activity called “data rescue” is now taking place at many institutions around the world. A data rescue project is underway to preserve Japanese instrumental meteorological records from the 19th century. These data were collected by foreign residents and visitors, Japanese scientists influenced by Dutch science, and by Japanese merchants. Recently, meteorological measurements taken at Mito from 1852 to 1868, and at Yokohama in 1872 and 1873 have been found. Based on instrumental records collected through this data rescue project, a warmer climate in the 1840s and 1850s around the South-eastern Kanto Region has been identified. Large year-to-year variations of winter temperatures have also been detected.

漱石『明暗』では、ウィリアム・ジェイムズ『心理学大綱』が考察したように、登場人物の身体感覚によって、小説内の事物、出来事に明暗を与える。登場人物に身体が持たせられているには理由がある。その身体によってまれる世界像が、登場人物の動いてゆく現在の局面で小説に生産されることが目指されているからである。精神領域も、身体による把握が認識されて初めて成り立つ。「影」「影像イメジ」という言葉で、登場人物の脳裏に起きている現象が表面化する。真の知識ならば、それらの縁(フリンジ)に連関している他のイメージが見えてくるはずだ。ジェイムズのこの考察が活かされた。お延という登場人物はこの原理に基づいて推理する。本小説に多く見られる対話での駆け引きでは、「或物」「何か」「何処か」「ある一点」「其所」「局所」「斯う」といった言葉が駆使される。相手にその内容を挿入させようという。実体のなかった中身は、小説内で徐々に実在感を強め、現象する次第となってゆく。はっきりと意識されていなかった対象に対し、登場人物は他者との関係のなかで情緒を揺り動かす。身体と意識とが往還運動を始め、あたかも対象が実在するかのような反応に至る。小説に事物、出来事を存在させるメカニズムが明らかにされた。In Sôseki's novel, Light and Darkness, small incidents and actions are given light and shade through the characters' physical sensation as suggested by William James in The Principles of Psychology. According to James, reason why characters have bodies is to try and produce pictures of this fictional world through the characters' five senses following the situation each character is moving through.Physical grasping brings even mental thought into existence. Phenomena in the characters' minds become manifest by the words of “shade” or “image”. William James said as follows: if we have the true knowledge about a thing, we have the knowledge of its relations. Knowledge-about relationships has psychic fringes or overtones. Light and Darkness makes good use of this concept. The heroine “Onobu” attempts to know her husband’s veiled past, based on this principle.Abundant demonstrative pronouns are used by the characters in this novel. They try to make others fill in those blanks. Those objects has gradually acquired substances in this novel.The characters betray their emotions towards unknown objects in their relations with others. By reciprocating motions between their bodies and consciousness, the unknown objects provide substance. In my paper, I reveal the mechanism by which this novel lets incidents and actions come into existence.
