This study discusses modern money by examining the relationship between the modern money theory (MMT) approach and the theory of credit money. L. Randall Wray and Stephanie Bell (Kelton) base their monetary theory on the state, or chartalist approach to money of Georg Friedrich Knapp and A. Mitchell Innes. They also inherit from Hyman Minsky the notion of a hierarchy of monies, or a debt pyramid. However, Knapp, Innes, and Minsky revealed that bank debt acts as credit money by being accepted to discharge debts. Due to the organization between banks, central bank money, not state money, is at the top of the hierarchy. Modern central bank money is credit money for discharging its debts, not as a promise to pay gold. Therefore, there is an endogenous supply mechanism in which money is created and destroyed in response to financing demand. The policy implications of MMT must be revisited in the light of these central bank roles and actions.

Plant (wood and grass) materials were basic and indispensable to prehistoric people’s lives; however, little attention has been paid to these materials up to now. The main reason is that they are characterized by variety and destructibility. To reveal the characteristics of wooden goods of the Satsumon and the Ainu cultures, data from archaeological reports were collected and arranged into a classification system, from which a data base for wooden goods from these two cultures was created. In total 7,477 wooden artifacts from 29 sites were analyzed (table), and based on the analyses, a class catalog of 26 groups consisting of 213 types was presented. Using this table, the ratio of wooden artifacts assigned to Category 4 (type of goods) and Category 3 (use of goods) of the Satsumon Culture and of the Ainu Culture were compared. In Category 4, there were some remarkable differences in ratio in such goods as ceremonial and ritual artifacts. However, there was no outstanding difference in the number of artifacts within these two cultures. In other words, the usage of wooden goods from the Satsumon to the Ainu Culture was continual. The comparison analyses of each item and of each cultural site will be the main research topic for the future.

Gutenberg's invention of printing produced not only printed books, but also other forms of print, such as the street literature. Particularly broadsheets, printed mainly in several free cities of Nurnberg, Augsburg, Strasbourg, Frankfurt and so on, reported various political, economic and social events. These sorts of print are named “Neue Zeitungen” (news reports/news). Some researchers consider them as one origin of the newspaper. Certainly the “Neue Zeitungen” possessed features such as actuality and continuity, but not periodicity. The 16th and the 17th Century witnessed the flowering of illustrated broadsheets in the Holy Roman Empire, later to be exported to England and France. Broadsheets acquired a wide range of social groups as their audience because of their low price, the engraving technology, and the phenomenon of traveling dealers. Anonymous production and sales networks permitted occasionally prohibited subject matter and made the broadsheets attractive as a print medium. This arrangement is reminiscent of that of the yellow journalism in contrast to so-called quality papers. Concision of text in the broadsheets and their quick production could also be compared to “twitter” in the internet era.
