The romance novel or romantic novel is a literary genre. The history begin Samuel Richardson's popular 1740 novel "Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded". Now romance fiction comprises 48.8% of all popular paperback fiction sold in North America. This genre is popular in Europe and Australia, and translated in 90 languages. Romance novels place their primary focus on the relationship and "romantic love" between two people, and must have an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.How the meaning of the "romantic love" is understood by women?For the purpose of studying the genre "Romance", this article pursues the effect and influence of mainly women' s reading upon the understanding of "romantic love" in the English Language Countries.

The word "Min-do" first appeared in newspapers around 1888, but a clear etymology of the word has never appeared. This paper traces back the history of the word's formation and proposes the possibility that this word is a Japanese-created Chinese word influenced by Western thought. This paper also considers the reception of this word in China and researches its mutual relationship with "kokumin-teido (国民程度)" (the condeition of the people) in China during the first two decades of the 20th century.

The purpose of our study is to make clear the significance of a boyfriend or girlfriend for junior high school students. For this purpose, we firstly investigated the determining factors of having a boyfriend/girlfriend, and then clarified the effects of the fact that one has a boyfriend/girlfriend on their self-consciousness. As a result of our analyses, we got following two findings. First, there are various factors which determine whether junior high school students have a boyfriend/girlfriend or not, and the factors differ according to each student's gender. Furthermore, the levels of academic accomplishment of the school also make a difference. Second, when we analyze the effects of that fact on their self-consciousness, it is necessary to consider not only the very thing that one has a boyfriend/girlfriend or not, but also if she or he is likely to have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Our analysis suggests that a success in love for girls in junior high has a more complex meaning compared with that for boys.
