Loam is an international scientific term, however, it has been used in a peculiar way in Japan. Japanese loam is a massive, brown, weathered rock unit composed of silt, clay, sand and occasional lapilli. It extensively covers coastal terraces, river terraces, ignimbrite plateaus and other uplands around volcanoes. Loam is not a product of soil forming process operated beneath the earth surface against rock bodies ; but it is a sediment accumulated slowly on the earth surface. Small-magnitude volcanic eruptions play a very minor role for the sedimentation. An eolian reworking process of pre-existing fine-grained deposits by the wind plays a major role. This is proved by following facts : 1) loam has accumulated even during the time when no ash-fall was observed ; 2) a volcano infrequently erupts explosively and the intensity of ash fallout is far lower than the sedimentation rate of loam ; it is about 0.1 mm/year ; 3) loam is hardly thickening toward a volcano. Very small particles carried from continental China by the westerlies at a high altitude are contained in loam, however, in the area around volcanoes their contribution is little for the formation of loam compared with eolian dust carried from nearby bare grounds by local winds at a low altitude. Loam does not accumulate all the year round. Just before and during fresh verdure, occasional strong winds pick up fine particles into the air from a bare ground which is dried up by a high-angle sunlight and high-temperatures. Eventually fine particles will settle down in vegetation. The most favorable season for loam deposition is April to May, in which more than half of an annual amount is achieved. It is convenient and practical to define a single eruption by a tephra layer which is not interbedded with loam. The thickness of loam can be used for the quantitative measurement of geologic time intervals, in years to thousands years, on certain conditions. Lithology of Japanese loam and the mechanism of sedimentation are identical to those of loess in other areas, such as China, northern Europe, northern America and New Zealand. There is no reason to hesitate to designate Japanese loam loess.

We herein present the results of a survey which assessed the benthic fauna from subtidal to continental shelf depth in the Shirahama area from 2012 to 2016. Our research resulted in the identification of 132 species from 75 families in seven phyla, Cnidaria, Annelida, Tardigrada, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata and Chordata. This includes 24 newly recorded species to Shirahama. Two species were also new records for Japanese waters. Furthermore, six undescribed species and five potentially undescribed species were recorded. We provide a selection of relevant photos for future taxonomic studies and monitoring of environmental changes.

情報が錯綜しているチェルノブイリ原子力発電所事故の健康に対する影響について1990年から現地で医療調査に従事して来た経験をもとに紹介する. 10年目に明らかに臨床的に確認された健康傷害は134名の急性放射線症(28名が3カ月以内に死亡)と800名の小児甲状腺癌(3名が死亡)だけである.被曝線量に不確的要素が多いために放射線傷害の調査は続行中であるが, 4~5年で癌の発症が100倍以上になったことは前代未聞であり,現地の癌の発生を予防するためにも一般的な癌発生の機序の研究にも国際的な協力体制が望まれる.

Ostorhinchus fleurieu Lacepede, 1802 is recorded from Japan for the first time on the basis of 21 specimens (37.6-106.8mm standard length) collected from Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. On the basis of underwater photographs, Osezaki, Izu Peninsula, is regarded as the northernmost record of the species. The new Japanese name "Kongo-tenjikudai" is proposed for the species. Comparisons of Ostorhinchus fleurieu with closely related species, O. aureus, based on 21 and 12 specimens, respectively, from Japan showed that O. fleurieu differed from O. aureus in having fewer total gill rakers (19-21, mode 21 vs. 23-24, 24 in the latter) and developed gill rakers (16-18, 18 vs. 18-21, 20), the pelvic-fin base located below the first lateral-line scale (vs. second scale), and a poorly defined, barrel-shaped black band on the caudal peduncle (vs. well-defined, sandglass-shaped band).

経済学が他分野にあれこれ口を出して引っかき回すことを「経済学帝国主義」という.しかし,刑事政策に関しては,経済学による「侵略」はこれまで日本ではあまりされてこなかった.その理由としては,犯罪を費用・便益の視点から分析することへの強い抵抗感があげられよう.しかし,刑事犯罪は裁判で有罪となった人間を刑務所に入れればそれで片が付くわけではない.犯罪には,取り調べ費用,裁判費用,施設収容費用がかかり,さらに社会復帰ができなければまた同じ費用が何度でもかかることになる.経済学的視点がすべてに優先するとはいえないが,経済のインセンティブ構造に明らかに反したり,費用・便益の観点からきわめて非効率だったりする社会政策は,いずれは国民の支持を失い,破綻に追い込まれるだろう.本論文は,近年進みつつある厳罰化,刑事裁判,矯正,そして更生保護にまつわる現在の日本の制度設計について,経済学的視点から検討を加えることにしたい.

電子教科書に関する規格策定の動きと,その中の1つであるEDUPUBの概要を紹介する。標準規格を策定することで,開発者側にも利用者側にもメリットが生まれ,新たな企業の参入を促すことができる。IEEE,CEN,IMSなどが電子教科書の規格策定に動いているが,IDPF,IMS GLC,W3Cが共同で開発を進めているEDUPUBは対象範囲が広く,かつ実装可能性を高めるために既存規格を極力利用している。また議論中のものも含めてオープンな仕様であり,採用するための参入障壁が低いため,今後有力なフォーラム標準となりうる。ただし,EDUPUBの規格策定は現在進行中であり,今後内容を修正あるいは拡大する可能性がある。

For determining VOCs emitted from bioeffluents, the indoor air collected in the classrooms of the elementary schools and a college were analyzed. As representative VOCs from bioeffluents, 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol (2E1H), Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, and Dodecane were identified and quantified. The concentrations of 2E1H, Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, Dodecane in occupied classrooms were higher than those in unoccupied classrooms. There was a higher correlation between the concentration of 2E1H and the reciprocal of the ventilation rate per person under the occupied conditions. While the higher correlation was also obtained between the concentration of 2E1H and the in-door CO2 concentration in the classrooms, the concentrations of Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, and Dodecane did not correlate with the ventilation rate nor CO2. The 2E1H concentration could be an useful index of the air pollution by human bioeffluents.
