Laser-induced desorption and ionization (LDI) of gold ions (Aun+: n = 1–3) were observed from gold nanorods in a liver tissue section (thickness: 10 µm). Larger amounts of gold nanorods produced stronger mass signals. Organic molecules in the tissue were not detected and did not inhibit the LDI processes of the gold nanorods in the tissue. Because of the selective LDI processes of the gold nanorods, the distribution of gold in the liver was successfully determined by imaging mass spectrometry.

Thienoacene-based π-conjugated oligomers, DTT-NP8 and DTT-BT8, were designed and synthesized. Their strong intermolecular interactions originating from S···S contacts enable the fabrication of single-crystal microribbons via solution processing. Organic single-crystal transistors exhibited field-effect mobilities as high as 0.54 cm2 V−1 s−1 and on/off current ratio of ca. 106.

イオン交換クロマトグラフィーによる筋肉中のカルノシン,アンセリン,バレニンの分離,分析精度の向上,分析の迅速化を試み,よい結果を得た.分析は,56×0.25cmのカラムに強酸性陽イオン交換樹脂Aminex A-5を50cmの高さに充てんし,エタノールを2.5%含んだクエン酸緩衝液(pH4.15,ナトリウム濃度0.38M)で,カラム温度57℃,緩衝液の流量5.4ml/hで行った.本方法により,アミノ酸,エタノールアミン,クレアチニンの存在下で,カルノシン,アンセリン,バレニンが迅速に精度よく定量できる.分析所要時間はカルノシンまでで5時間40分で,分析精度は(100±1.2)%であった.本方法による筋肉の1回の分析必要量は0.02gである.マッコウクジラ,スジイルカ,ヒキガエル,ホタテガイの筋肉にバレニンの存在が認められた.

We prepared lectin-imprinted hydrogel layers on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor chips by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In a buffer solution with a target protein, SPR signal and binding constant of the lectin-imprinted hydrogel layer chip were much larger than those of nonimprinted hydrogel layer chip prepared without using a template lectin. By molecular imprinting with ATRP, recognition sites for the target lectin were formed within hydrogel thin layers on the SPR sensor chips. The lectin-imprinted hydrogel layer chips with recognition sites for target protein are candidates as highly sensitive sensor devices for SPR sensing system.

Effects of powdered green tea added to the dough on qualities of breads were investigated.Changes in vitamin C and chlorophyll contents during fermentation were also examined. Results obtained were as follows:1) The dough which was prepared by addition of 1.5% powdered green tea, i. e., the green dough was expanded or puffed as well as the white dough. When the amount of the tea powder added was increased to 3 or 5 %, the expansion on puffing process appeared to be suppressed. It turned out that tannic acids involved in the puffing process and seemingly inhibited the expansion.2) When ascorbic acid was added to the green dough containing 1.5% tea powder, about 70%of ascorbic acid was remained in the bread after baking. The contents of chlorophyll and tannic acids were not precisely determined because it was difficult to sufficiently extract them from the after dough.3) A sensory test of breads made from doughs containing tea powder showed that the bread containing 1.5% tea powder was favourable on the color of internal part, taste, texture and flavor. A sensory test of staled breads revealed that breads containing tea powder remained in rather higher quality of tissue, flavor and texture than white breads, except taste.

19目44科111属162種(亜種を含む)430個体の日本産および外国産鳥類の成鳥の晒骨標本を作成し,方骨について,形状,方骨と隣接骨との連結方法,含気孔の位置と数などを主眼として検索し た.1)方骨の形状は,鳥類分類上の目•科内ではほぼ一致した.しかし,一部の目で目内変異が認められ,カワセミ科では科内変異が顕著であった.2)方骨と隣接骨の連結方法も鳥類分類上の目内でほぼ一致したが,一部に目内変異•科内褒異が認められた.3)方骨と隣接骨との四つの関節状態はそれぞれ相関関係がみられ,一つの関節が強い関節状態を示せば他の三つの関節も強い関節を示し,弱い関節のものは,他も弱い関節を示す傾向がみられた.4)方骨の各部位の観察で変異が最も少ないのは,含気孔の位置と数の形質であった.5)方骨の形状は生活型分類での鳥類の嘴の適応諸型との関連性が強く,目の異なるカツオドリとカワセミ,フクロウ類とワシタカ類などはそれぞれ非常に類似する方骨を有した.

The determination of boron in steel was carried out by ICP-AES combined with anion-exchange separation. About 0.2 g of a steel sample was weighed in a quartz beaker and dissolved with a mixture of 2 cm3 of nitric acid, 1.5 cm3 of phosphoric acid and 4 cm3 of water by heating on a hot plate. Most of the nitric acid was evaporated off and the sample solution was transferred into a separatory funnel with 10 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm−3 nitric acid and water. About 3 g of iron(III) hydroxide oxide was dissolved in a mixture of 10 cm3 of hydrofluoric acid, 1 cm3 of 30% hydrogen peroxide and 50 cm3 of water by heating on a hot plate and added to the above sample solution. The sample solution was diluted to about 100 cm3 with water, allowed to stand for 1 h and then loaded onto an anion-exchange resin Bio-Rad AG1 column preconditioned by a fluoride solution. The iron in the sample solution passed through the column, while the boron was adsorbed as BF4− on the column and recovered with 6.5 mol dm−3 nitric acid. The effluent, containing boron, was treated with phosphoric, perchloric and nitric acids and diluted to 25 cm3 with water to be subjected to ICP-AES at 249.77 nm. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of boron in a steel-certified reference material, JSS 174-5, provided by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. The detection limit was found to be 1.3 μg g−1 boron in steel.

カキ(Diospyros kaki)の果実を干し柿等へ加工すると水分含量が減少して放射性セシウムが濃縮するため,食品中に含まれる放射性物質の基準値を上回る可能性がある。そこで果実の加工後の濃度を収穫・加工前に予測するために,葉中の濃度を目安にする方法を検討した。生果実の濃度は葉の濃度に対し0.4以下であり収穫期が近づくにつれてその比が減少した。葉を測定することで加工製品中の濃度をほぼ推定できる。

Aortic valve calcification can aggravate aortic stenoses, and it is a significant cause of sudden cardiac death. The increasing number of patients with age-related calcification is a problem in developed nations. However, the only treatment option currently available is highly invasive cardiac valve replacement. Therefore, clarification of the etiology of calcification is urgently needed to develop drug therapies and prevention methods. Recent studies have revealed that calcification is not a simple sedimentation of a mineral through a physicochemical phenomenon; various factors dynamically contribute to the mechanism. Further, we are finally beginning to understand the cellular origins of calcification, which had been unclear for a long time. Based on these findings that help to clarify potential drug targets, we expect to establish drug therapies that reduce the stress on patients. In this paper, I introduce the latest findings on cells that are most likely to contribute to calcification and on calcification-related factors that may lead to the development of drug therapies.

We evaluate the effectiveness of real planning and control about the traffic in Hiroshima city by simulating the traffic flows in the entire city. Our massively parallel simulation of minute behavior of individual drivers is made credible by the use of novel techniques for learning the parameters of simulation models from available data.

In this study, we have examined the anti-inflammatory actions of royal jelly (RJ) at a cytokine level. When supernatants of RJ suspensions were added to a culture of mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and IFN-γ, the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1, was efficiently inhibited in a dose-dependent manner without having cytotoxic effects on macrophages. This suggests that RJ contains factor(s) responsible for the suppression of proinflammatory cytokine secretion. We named the factor for honeybees RJ-derived anti-inflammatory factor (HBRJ-AIF), and further investigated the molecular aspects of it. Size fractionation study showed that HBRJ-AIF is composed of substances of low (<5 kDa) and high (>30 kDa) molecular weights, with the former being a major component. Chromatographic analysis showed that MRJP3 is one candidate for the HBRJ-AIF with high molecular weights. Thus, our results suggest that RJ has anti-inflammatory actions through inhibiting proinflammatory cytokine production by activated macrophages.

近年, 肥満者が増加傾向にあり深刻な問題となっているが, 食事による減量の実践のためには対象者が主体的に食習慣・食行動の問題点を理解し, 実行することが必要である。また肥満解消のためには知識を提供するだけではなく, 管理栄養士など専門の知識や技術を持った者が, 対象者の現段階の正しい変容ステージを見極め, それぞれのステージに合わせた支援をすることが求められている。そこで人間ドック受診者を対象に食品の摂取頻度状況等を横断的に調査し, 食品摂取行動に影響を及ぼす因子の検討を共分散構造分析 (SEM) にて行った。結果, BMI 25.0 kg/m2以上群 (肥満群) においては, 食事改善の意識はあるが実行に移せていない可能性が考えられた。さらに食品摂取行動に対して, 健康面より嗜好が大きく摂取頻度に影響していることが推察され, 効果的な栄養指導を行うためには食行動を規定する食習慣, 特に嗜好を考慮することの必要性が示された。

A nine-year-old male beagle dog had a white spherical mass in the subcutis of the left lumbar region. Microscopically, spindle to oval cells diffusely proliferated in the fibrous and myxoid stroma. Many neoplastic cells showed rhabdoid features or vacuolated cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin and S100 and partly positive for neuron-specific enolase and glial fibrillary acidic protein but were negative for von Willebrand factor, desmin and α-smooth muscle actin. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells had abundant cytoplasmic processes and desmosome-like structures. Cytoplasmic inclusions of rhabdoid-featured cells in HE sections were composed of aggregates of intermediate filaments, and cytoplasmic vacuoles were identified as an invagination of cytoplasm. Although malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor was suggested according to these results, the present case was diagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma with rhabdoid features due to a lack of identification of the basal lamina under electron microscopy.

Phosphate-buffered sucrose (PBSc) solution is effective for short-term hypothermic preservation of tissue during feline kidney transplantation. A high-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (35,000 Da, PEG35) reportedly enhanced the protective effects against cold-induced tubular injuries in animal kidney transplantation models. We investigated the ability of PBSc solution containing PEG35 to preserve cultured feline kidney cells using in vitro WST-8 cell proliferation assays. PEG35 significantly improved cell viability during 24 hr of cold preservation. PBSc containing 20 g/l PEG35 achieved an effect almost equal to that of University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, the gold standard preservation solution used in human clinical kidney transplantation, for up to 24 hr of preservation. Our results suggest that PBSc containing PEG35 provides an excellent medium for graft cold storage during feline kidney transplantation.

Although the quality of tap water is generally examined using chemical assay, this method cannot be used for examination in real time. Against such a background, the technique of fish bioassay has attracted attention as an approach that enables constant monitoring of aquatic contamination. The respiratory rhythms of fish are considered an efficient indicator for the ongoing assessment of water quality, since they are sensitive to chemicals and can be indirectly measured from bioelectric signals generated by breathing. In order to judge aquatic contamination accurately, it is necessary to measure bioelectric signals from fish swimming freely as well as to stably discriminate measured signals, which vary between individuals. However, no bioassay system meeting the above requirements has yet been established. This paper proposes a bioassay system using bioelectric signals generated from small fish in free-swimming conditions. The system records signals using multiple electrodes to cover the extensive measurement range required in a free-swimming environment, and automatically discriminates changes in water quality from signal frequency components. This discrimination is achieved through an ensemble classification method using probability neural networks to solve the problem of differences between individual fish. The paper also reports on the results of related validation experiments, which showed that the proposed system was able to stably discriminate between water conditions before and after bleach exposure.

With the recent progresses in computer performance and simulation techniques, it is becoming feasible to apply full three-dimensional wave-based numerical simulation techniques to large-scale problems of real-life sound propagation outdoors. In the present paper, a reconstruction technique for real-life urban geometries with full reproduction of the roof shapes and for the ground profiles using digital geographic information is presented. Also, a generation technique for the uniform rectilinear grid used in finite-difference time-domain simulations is presented. The types of geographic dataset used for the reconstruction are a digital surface model and a two-dimensional building outline map. For comparison, another geometry with flat building roofs, which is the type of geometry used in former noise-mapping studies using empirical models, is created. Comparison of the results of finite-difference time-domain acoustic simulations performed over the geometries shows sound pressure level differences above and behind buildings. The maximum level difference of 10 dB in magnitude indicates the necessity of proper reconstruction of the roof shapes in real-life urban acoustic simulations.
