An international organization called ATC21S suggests “21st century skills” and states importance of merged skills which are not resolved into learning contents of each subject in school. It is difficult to enhance such skills by old unsystematic education among each subject. On the other hand, “STEAM education,” which is merged Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and design, and Math is attracting attention and is being promoted in the United States, Korea and other countries. It is thought that education into which several subjects are merged like STEAM education is effective in enhancement of merged skills like 21st century skills. The author explains the reason why “space science” is good for STEAM education in this article.

Following the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recommendation on measles elimination, the Western Pacific Region of WHO (WPR) is emphasizing accelerated measles control programme especially since the achievement of polio eradication in WPR in 2000. This includes upgraded surveillance and mass measles vaccination campaign for children aged 9 months to 4 years. However, there are limited scientific evidences supporting the feasibility of this programme in Laos. To examine measles elimination feasibility in the country, we conducted measles outbreak investigation using immunoglobulin M (IgM). From March 1999 to March 2000, we conducted 7 outbreak investigations. At the outbreak sites, we examined clinical manifestations of cases and collected individual data. About five blood samples were drawn from each outbreak, and lgM antibodies to measles were tested. Of 7 investigated outbreaks, 5 were confirmed as measles, one was chickenpox, and one occurred in the inaccessible area due to flooding. In a village of high land Lao, blood drawn was refused. Of 185 cases, 64 (34.6%) cases were immunized, and 110 (59.5%) were unimunized. The estimated vaccine efficacy is 67.9%. The number of measles cases among school-aged children was 74 (40.0%), which represented 2.5% of the total population in investigated villages. Our findings showed various difficulties of the surveillance and the limited outcomes of mass measles vaccination campaign under the accelerated measles control programme by WPR. In this paper, a novel magnetic mesoporous Pd catalyst is used to catalyse selective hydrogenation of sunflower oil at a mild temperature of 50°C. Effects of reaction temperature, stirring speed, time, catalyst loading and hydrogen pressure on the reaction activity, trans fatty acid (TFA) and stearic acid formation were studied. Under the condition of 3.2 mg Pd/100 g oil, 50°C, 1300 rpm stirring speed and 19.0 atm of H2, the lowest amount of TFA generated during the reaction (IV = 80) was 14.9 ± 0.4% while 11.4 ± 0.4% of stearic acid was produced. And this magnetic Pd-catalyst can be reused easily for at least six times without significant catalyst deactivation, the amount of TFA almost remained unchanged. Moreover, this Pd-catalyst shows a good magnetic separation, which provides a potential method for the facile oil modification.

1)千葉県亀山湖に生息するオオクチバス資源の評価に用いる資料とするため、遊漁によるキャッチアンドリリースを想定した空中曝露後の生存率について飼育池を用いて試験を行った。2)2000年8月1日に、30℃以上の気温の下で、空中曝露時間を0分、5分、10分および20分区に設定して試験を行ったところ、へい死魚はなかった。3)2001年10月22日に、気温約20℃の下で、空中曝露時間を15分、30分、45分および60分区に設定して試験を行ったところ、15分および30分区ではへい死魚はなかったが、45分区で50%が生存し、60分区ではすべてへい死した。4)45分区におけるへい死個体と生存個体の間で体長による有意差はなかった。5)60分区において、試験日当日のへい死個体とその後のへい死個体間の体長による有意差はなかった。6)各試験の観察結果から、20分以内の空中曝露では、生存に大きな影響を与えないものと考えられた。7)このため、一般に行われているバス釣りでのキャッチアンドリリース行為における空中曝露時間では、再放流された個体の多くが生存していることが推測された。

本研究は、理系を指向する女子の人数を増加させることを目的に、「理系女子」のイメージの向上に寄与する製品をデザインした。その手順は次のとおりである。まず、文献調査をもとに、憧れの対象としての「理系女子」キャラクタに必要な構成要素とその属性を設定した。次に、フィールドサーベイをおこない、現在の「理系女子」のファッションを分析した。以上の結果をもとに、3人の「理系女子」キャラクタを決定した。そして、それぞれが使用する携帯電話、携帯オーディオ機器、鞄をデザインした。

This paper describes the temperature rise and the thermal stability of tank type power capacitors and a analyzing method of the stability and permissible overload factor using a computer. When capacitor is operated at high ambient temperature and under excessive high voltage, the temperature of the dielectric rises higher and in some cases the capacitor looses the thermal balance and finally breakdowns thermally.We measured the heat radiation coefficient and temperature rise of the capacitor, and clarified that the radiated heat calculated from the heat radiation coefficient and the area of the tank coincided with the generated heat calculated from the output of the capacitor and the loss factor of the dielectric. Furthermore we developed analyzing method of thermal stability and permissible overload factor of capacitors using a computer. By this analysis it becomes possible to know the permissible overload factor and the temperature of the capacitor dielectric without performing the temperature rise test which requires long time and much cost.

日本の後期旧石器時代は,未較正の¹⁴C年代で3.3万年前から1.3万年前のおよそ2万年間存続し,時期的にはAT降灰期前後を境に前半と後半に区分される.本稿では,前半期を前葉と後葉に,後半期を前葉・中葉・末葉に区分し,各時期の石器群の様相について,特に寒冷気候への適応に注目して概観した.前半期前葉は局部磨製石斧と台形様石器に,前半期後葉は石刃技法の成立やナイフ形石器の登場に,後半期前葉は石器群の地域性の発現に,後半期中葉は尖頭器石器群などの地域的展開に,後半期末葉は列島全域におよぶ細石刃石器群の展開によって特色づけられる.<br>後期旧石器時代前半期前葉に登場する掻器と呼ばれる石器は,後期旧石器時代の諸石器群にあまねく伴う石器ではなく,時空的な偏りをもって保有される石器である.とくに掻器は高緯度地域に濃密に分布する傾向があり,使用痕分析から導き出される皮なめしという機能推定とあいまって,防寒のための毛皮革製品製作用具であることがうかがえ,寒冷環境への適応を物語る石器として重要視される.<br>後期旧石器時代の編年を地域ごとにいかに精緻に組み立て,同位体ステージで示されるような環境イベントとの対応関係をどのように読み取るかは,後期旧石器時代研究の今日的な課題のひとつである.掻器の存在は,最終氷期最寒冷期のより寒冷な環境への人類の適応戦略の解読を可能としている.

次世代LSI(大規模集積回路)の高速・低消費電力化のための革新的デバイスとして、Si基板上Ge光電子融合デバイスの実現へ向けた基盤技術を、シミュレーション技術開発とともに確立した。従来とは異なる新規な歪みGeチャネル形成、絶縁層上歪みGe(Ge-on-Insulator)基板作製に成功し、また、量子ドットを有する、フォトニック結晶やマイクロディスク等の微小共振器構造を組み込んだ電流注入発光デバイスを作製し、室温における強い電流注入発光、導波路とのカップリングに成功した。

民営化されたJR東日本の本業はあくまで旅客や貨物の運送業(売り上げで約7割)であるが、本報告では最近注目されるようになった同社の生活サービス事業、特に駅ナカ・駅ビル・ビジネスさらには街ナカ・ビジネスの展開とそれら事業展開の原動力になっているSuicaの導入および拡大に焦点を当てる。生活サービス事業でのSuicaホルダーの量的拡大は、鉄道事業のメインテナンスコストの低減に役立ち、また街ナカでの他社との提携ではハウスカードであるビューSuicaの普及が可能となり、モバイルSuicaによる外部ネットワークとの結合では、携帯電話での乗車券の予約・購入のほかインターネット上でのSuica決済が現実のものとなった。以上のように、Suica導入はJR東日本の企業競争力を著しく高める要因となっており、このような例は他国に類をみない「ビジネスとテクノロジーの共鳴」であり、日本発企業競争力の創成の格好のケースといえるであろう。
