Companies listed on the stock exchange are required to share their annual reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) within the first three months following the fiscal year. These reports, namely 10-K Filings, are presented to public interest by the SEC through an Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval database. 10-K Filings use standard file formats (xbrl, html, pdf) to publish the financial reports of the companies. Although the file formats propose a standard structure, the content and the meta-data of the financial reports (e.g. tag names) is not strictly bound to a pre-defined schema. This study proposes a data collection and data preprocessing method to semantify the financial reports and use the collected data for further analysis (i.e. machine learning). The analysis of eight different datasets, which were created during the study, are presented using the proposed data transformation methods. As a use case, based on the datasets, five different machine learning algorithms were utilized to predict the existence of the corresponding company in the S&P 500 index. According to the strong machine learning results, the dataset generation methodology is successful and the datasets are ready for further use.

The Human Library is an event where people are rented as “books” to be “read” by others. People who are considered to be social minorities are to perform as “books”, which is designed to help reduce discrimination and prejudice in the society by talking with the readers. The purpose of this event is to nurture a tolerant attitude towards different people. In this study, we focus on “the books” who are the narrators and study the effect that narrating their stories have on their self-understanding. We participated in Human Libraries performed throughout Japan and conducted semi-structured interviews of 23 “books”.We found that “books” who participated in Human Libraries had a strong tendency to participate repeatedly, and the reasons for this included an actual feeling of growth gained through self-reflection, the pleasure of the talk, and the interchange with others. However, at times they also experienced feelings of uneasiness or recalled a traumatic event, which they struggled to overcome.Thus, it may be said that the narrative and dialogue in the Human Library promotes new discovery and self-understanding for “books” who are struggling to come to terms with their attributes and minority status. In addition, it was suggested that they are effective in educating the general public about the perception of different cultures.

黄砂時粉塵の長期曝露が発癌に関与する可能性について,気道上皮構成細胞株を用いて検討を行った.その結果,比較的短時間の黄砂時粉塵による細胞株刺激でも,炎症発癌に関与するサイトカイン,酸化ストレスマーカーが誘導され,粉塵の長期曝露が発癌に関与する可能性が示唆された.また,鳥取県内に長期在住している非喫煙肺腺癌患者の術後肺標本における元素解析を蛍光X線法で行った.喫煙肺腺癌患者の標本でも同様の解析を行い両群間で元素成分について比較検討を行った.黄砂に付着する重金属などの非土壌成分について明らかな差異は認めらなかった.長期粉塵曝露が肺組織へ与える影響については今後さらなる検討が必要と考えられた.

A vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device delivers electrical pulses to the vagus nerve at a rhythm defined by the duty cycle. The standard therapeutic range is advocated for an output current of 1.5-2.25 mA and a duty cycle of 10%. As the optimal settings vary from patient to patient, some patients may benefit from additional seizure reduction when stimulated beyond the standard range. A total of 74 patients (15 children aged <12 years and 59 adolescents/adults) who underwent VNS implantation between 2011 and 2020 and who were followed up for at least 2 years were included in this retrospective study. Stimulation parameters exceeding 2.25 mA of output current, 25% of duty cycle, and 0.5625 (2.25 mA × 25%) of current × duty cycle were defined as high stimulation. The proportion achieved an additional seizure reduction of 20%, and the 50% seizure reduction rate at the last follow-up was compared between adolescents/adults and children. Approximately 40% of patients in adolescents/adults treated with high stimulation experienced an additional acute effect, resulting in a 50% or greater reduction in seizures in almost all patients. Moreover, in adolescents/adults, 22.2%-41.9% of the patients were treated with high stimulation, and the responder rate was 69.5%. Conversely, the responder rate in children was 26.7%, significantly worse than that in adolescents/adults, despite higher stimulation. VNS with high-stimulation settings is effective for adolescent and adult patients with intractable epilepsy. Even high stimulation may not be effective in extremely refractory pediatric epilepsy with a high seizure frequency.

崩壊のおそれのある斜面に近接して施設構造物を設置する際は,斜面の崩壊状況を想定し適切な離間距離を確保しておく必要がある.土砂到達距離の簡易推定法は各種指針類に示されているが,各推定法には差がある.そこで,2016年熊本地震における代表的な崩壊斜面を調査し,土砂到達距離を各種指針類の斜面高さに基づく推定法と比較するとともに,到達距離に及ぼす斜面高さ以外の影響因子について検討した. その結果,最大到達距離/最大崩壊高さは,強度の小さい火山灰・軽石層の崩壊では指針類の簡易推定法を上回る事例もあるが,岩盤崩壊では指針類の推定法に比較して小さい.また,崩壊高さに比較して崩壊土量が多い程,崩壊土の強度特性が小さい程,到達距離は大きくなることがわかった.

岩手県におけるブロイラー産業は1960年代前半に大船渡市で開始され,その後半には県南地域に波及した.その担い手は飼料資本の地元飼料特約店であり,処理加工場を設立しつつ,地元の生産者を確保するために主に委託契約方式を採用してブロイラー飼養を行なわせた. 1960年代後半から70年代前半にかけ,次第に県北地域へとブロイラー産業は地域的に拡大した.その担い手は地元飼料商のほか,総合商社・飼料資本の子会社,単位農協地元農民など多様であった. 1970年代後半には大手のローカル・インテグレーターを中心に,種鶏・ふ卵場の設置,直営農場によるブロイラー飼養,荷受・卸売部門への進出を通して,生産から販売に至る一貫した自己完結型のインテグレーションを形成し,また飼養農家の強い生産意欲にも支えられて市場競争力を強め,南九州産地と並ぶ日本のブロイラー産業の生産地を確立した. 岩手県のブロイラー産業の主産地を形成している南東部地域と北部地域では,零細農家が収益の相対的優位性を最大の要因としてブロイラー飼養を選択し,また,複数のインテグレーターが地域の農業経営や農家経済の状況に対応して,ブロイラー産業への地域的条件整備の役割を果たしてきたという共通の存立基盤のあることが判明した.

本研究は2016年熊本地震における福祉避難所の運営状況について調査し,福祉避難所の運営上の課題について分析した.福祉避難所を開設した熊本県益城町の2つの特別養護老人ホームを対象に,避難者及び避難者に対する支援者の数がどのように変化したかを聞き取りと質問票によって調査した.地震発生から1週間の間,両施設では大きな混乱が生じた.その要因は被災によって出勤できる職員が少なかったことと多くの一般避難者を受け入れたことであった.このような混乱を避けるためには,BCPの中に福祉避難所の開設手順を加えることが必要である.
