A comprehensive design method for a LOX/Liquid-Methane (L-CH4) rocket engine combustor with a coaxial injector and the preliminary design of the regenerative cooling combustor with 100-kN thrust in vacuum at a combustion pressure of a 3.43 MPa are presented. Reasonable dimensions for the combustor that satisfy the targeted C* efficiency of more than 98% and combustion stability are obtained.

Purpose: Diabetes causes hyperglycemic disorders due to insufficient activity of insulin, and it also increases blood glucose level. Recent studies have reported the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease. Periodontitis is advanced by inflammatory cytokines stimulated with LPS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hyperglycemia on the expression of inflammatory cytokines induced by LPS in osteoblasts.Methods: Cells were cultured for 7 and 14 days in the presence or absence of LPS and glucose. The expression mRNA level of IL-6, RANKL and OCN was determined using real-time PCR. The protein expression of IL-6 and RANKL was also measured using ELISA.Results: LPS and glucose increased the mRNA expression of IL-6, coupled with a decrease in the mRNA expression of OCN, which is associated with IL-6 and glucose. It also increased the protein expression of IL-6 compared to LPS. However, LPS+Glucose did not affect the mRNA and protein expression of RANKL. Furthermore, GLUT4 inhibitor, WZB117, blocked the stimulatory effect of glucose on LPS-induced IL-6 mRNA expression. WZB117 did not affect LPS-reduced OCN mRNA expression.Conclusion: These results suggest that high glucose levels increase LPS-induced IL-6 expression mediated by GLUT4.

睡眠時無呼吸症候群 (Sleep Apnea Syndrome: SAS) を疑う場合, 問診, 簡易スクリーニング検査を施行し, 必要に応じて終夜睡眠ポリグラフ検査 (Polysomnograph: PSG) をおこなうことが一般的である. 現在本邦において CPAP の保険導入適応は, 簡易モニターで無呼吸低呼吸指数 (Apnea Hypopnea Index: AHI)≧40または PSG で AHI≧20となっている. しかし, 簡易モニターでは SAS 以外の睡眠障害を把握できないため, 診断には脳波, 筋電図, 眼電図なども含まれる PSG が望ましい. PSG 施行中にてんかん波形がみられた症例を経験したので報告する. PSG で SAS に加えて脳波異常が認められ, その後の脳波検査で特発性全般てんかんと診断された. 本症例のように SAS に他の睡眠障害が合併する可能性も留意しておく必要がある.

Background It is widely recognized that weather changes can trigger headache onset. Most people who develop headaches choose to self-medicate rather than visit a hospital or clinic. We investigated the association between weather and headache onset using large-sample sales of the headache medicine, loxoprofen. Methods We collected daily sales figures of loxoprofen and over-the-counter drugs over a 1-year period from a drug store chain in western Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. To adjust for changes in daily sales of loxoprofen due to social environmental factors, we calculated a proportion of loxoprofen daily sales to over-the-counter drug daily sales. At the same time, we obtained weather date for the study region from the website of the Japan Meteorological Agency. We performed linear regression analysis to ascertain the association between weather conditions and the loxoprofen daily sales proportion. We also conducted a separate questionnaire survey at the same drug stores to determine the reason why people purchased loxoprofen. Results Over the study period, we surveyed the sale of hundreds of thousands of loxoprofen tablets. Most people purchased loxoprofen because they had a headache. We found that the sales proportion of loxoprofen increased when average barometric pressure decreased, and that precipitation, average humidity, and minimum humidity increased on loxoprofen purchase days compared to the previous day of purchases. Conclusions This study, performed using a large dataset that was easy-to-collect and representative of the general population, revealed that sales of loxoprofen, which can represent the onset and aggravation of headache, significantly increased with worsening weather conditions.

近年,地球温暖化による台風の強大化と海面上昇が危惧されており,過去最大級の伊勢湾台風を上回る巨大台風の襲来が及ぼす影響について検討することは重要である.つまり,襲来する可能性がある台風の規模と台風襲来によって起こりうる高潮災害の規模を予測することが必須となる.そこで,本研究では,伊勢湾湾奥部を対象に,室戸台風級の超巨大台風時,および現在/将来気候から予想される最大高潮条件における高潮浸水計算を行い,超巨大台風による浸水特性について検討した.その結果,海抜ゼロメートル地帯である伊勢湾湾奥部では,一旦,高潮によって溢水すると,人的・物的被害が一気に拡大することがわかり,甚大な高潮災害を軽減させるためには早期避難が重要であるとことがわかった.

According to previous studies surveying dietary supplements for sports athletes, proteins and amino acids are mainly utilized to decrease post-training fatigue. Additionally, peptides as an intermediate product, composed of two or more amino acids, are well known as an anti-oxidative supplement that shows high absorbency. Egg White Peptide (EWP), produced by hydrolyzing egg white with a neutral protease, has strong anti-oxidative effects, and is anticipated to be useful as a functional ingredient for improving endurance training and maintaining physical conditioning. The results of three human studies suggest that EWP is effective and applicable to decrease muscle damage following physically demanding training sessions. Moreover, it is expected that administration of EWP would be highly effective for the treatment of muscle fatigue during prolonged strenuous exercise (marathon running) and/or overtraining. This overview of the effect of EWP dietary supplementation for daily endurance activities indicates its utility in improving physical conditioning of athletes and citizen runners.

今日、世界の有力企業では、デザインを活用した経営手法への関心が高まっているが、多くの企業では、いまだにデザインの考え方や手法を自社の戦略に十分に活用できていない。大企業よりも経営資源に劣る中小企業では尚更である。中小企業においても、多様化・高度化する社会や顧客のニーズに応えるためには、デザインの戦略的な活用が重要なテーマとなっていることに変わりはない。行政や商工会議所などにおいても、中小企業が経営にデザインを活用できるよう、関連研究・技術支援や支援ツール開発、各種の研修事業など、デザイン振興に関わる様々な取り組みを展開しているが、期待される程の効果は出ていない。経営資源が限られ、多くの経営課題を抱える中小企業では、デザインの活用を特定領域における施策として推進するのではなく、経営戦略の一環としてデザインマネジメントを取り入れた戦略を推進することが有効であると考える。本稿では、企業の経営戦略の形成と実行においてデザインが果たす役割を整理し、中小企業事業者の実践知を経営戦略におけるデザインの役割に当てはめることで、戦略的デザインマネジメントの方法論について考察したので、その概要を報告する。

【目的】Balance Evaluation Systems Test(以下,BESTest),Mini-BESTest,Brief-BESTest およびBerg Balance Scale(以下,BBS)の得点分布の特性と転倒予測精度を比較することである。【方法】57名の入院患者(脳卒中者と骨折者)を対象とした。退院時に3 つのBESTest とBBS を測定し,退院後6 ヵ月間の転倒の有無を調査した。評価指標の得点分布と転倒予測精度を検討した。【結果】BBS のみに天井効果を認め,歪度からBBS の分布に偏りを認めた。転倒予測精度について,Area under the curve と感度でMini-BESTest が最も高く,特異度ではBBS が最も高かった。【結論】Mini-BESTest は,その得点分布が比較的均一で,中等度の転倒予測精度を有し,動作課題項目も少ないことから有用性の高い評価であることが示唆された。

A 10-year-old spayed female mixed-breed cat presented with progressive nonregenerative anemia. Clinicopathological abnormalities included severe nonregenerative anemia (packed cell volume [PCV]: 7%, aggregate reticulocytes: 1.12 × 103/µl) and a hypoechogenic mass well-localized in the stomach. Bone marrow (BM) smears revealed increased particle hematopoietic cellularity with decreased myeloid:erythroid (M:E) ratios, no dysplasia of any lineage, and presence of erythroid precursors phagocytized by macrophages. The cat was diagnosed with presumptive precursor-targeted immune-mediated anemia (PIMA). The stomach mass was consistent with CD 20 positive T-cell lymphoma. The lymphoma was completely resected via surgery, and the PIMA was cured by immunosuppressive therapy. On day 410, both diseases have not recurred without medications. This is the first report of feline PIMA and concurrent gastrointestinal lymphoma.

α-L-Rhamnosidases (α-L-Rha-ases, EC 3.2.1.40) are glycosyl hydrolases (GHs) that hydrolyze a terminal α-linked L-rhamnose residue from a wide spectrum of substrates such as heteropolysaccharides, glycosylated proteins, and natural flavonoids. As a result, they are considered catalysts of interest for various biotechnological applications. α-L-rhamnose (6-deoxy-L-mannose) is structurally similar to the rare sugar α-L-mannose. Here we have examined whether microbial α-L-Rha-ases possess α-L-mannosidase activity by synthesizing the substrate 4-nitrophenyl α-L-mannopyranoside. Four α-L-Rha-ases from GH78 and GH106 families were expressed and purified from Escherichia coli cells. All four enzymes exhibited both α-L-rhamnosyl-hydrolyzing activity and weak α-L-mannosyl-hydrolyzing activity. SpRhaM, a GH106 family α-L-Rha-ase from Sphingomonas paucimobilis FP2001, was found to have relatively higher α-L-mannosidase activity as compared with three GH78 α-L-Rha-ases. The α-L-mannosidase activity of SpRhaM showed pH dependence, with highest activity observed at pH 7.0. In summary, we have shown that α-L-Rha-ases also have α-L-mannosidase activity. Our findings will be useful in the identification and structural determination of α-L-mannose-containing polysaccharides from natural sources for use in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Thermal inactivation of saccharifying enzymes is a crucial issue for the efficient utilization of cellulosic biomass as a renewable resource. Cellobiohydrolases (CBHs) are a kind of cellulase. In general, CBHs belonging to glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 6 (Cel6) act synergistically with CBHs of GH family 7 (Cel7) and other carbohydrate-active enzymes during the degradation of cellulosic biomass. However, while the catalytic rate of enzymes generally becomes faster at higher temperatures, Cel6 CBHs are inactivated at lower temperatures than Cel7 CBHs, and this represents a limiting factor for industrial utilization. In this study, we produced a series of mutants of the glycoside hydrolase family 6 cellobiohydrolase PcCel6A from the fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and compared their thermal stability. Eight mutants from a random mutagenesis library and one rationally designed mutant were selected as candidate thermostable mutants and produced by heterologous expression in the yeast Pichia pastoris. Comparison of the hydrolytic activities at 50 and 60 °C indicated that the thermal stability of PcCel6A is influenced by the number and position of cysteine residues that are not involved in disulfide bonds.
