Recently, π-conjugated molecules with curved-π surface have attracted considerable interest for their unique properties originating from their curved structures. However, most of them consist of only carbon and hydrogen atoms. In these situations, we have developed novel synthetic protocols for construction of distorted structures directly from 2D π-conjugated molecules under mild reaction conditions. By applying phenol and aniline oxidation methods, we have succeeded in the synthesis of highly distorted cyclophanes, π-extended heterohelicenes, and highly twisted porphyrin oligomers. Furthermore, we have succeeded in the synthesis of a nitrogen-embedded buckybowl as a novel bowl-shaped π-conjugated molecule with a pyrrolic nitrogen in its skeleton. These heteroatom containing curved-π conjugated molecules exhibit unique characteristics due to the combination of the curved structure with heteroatoms such as circularly polarized luminescence, strong C60 binding, and near IR electrochromism. We believe that the chemistry of heteroatom containing curved-π conjugated molecules would enhance the potential of three-dimensional π-conjugated molecules for molecular materials.

精神神経領域の医薬品開発は,国際的にも活発である.これまでのうつ病治療薬の開発は,選択的セロトニン再取り込み阻害薬(SSRI)やセロトニン・ノルアドレナリン再取り込み阻害薬(SNRI)等が中心であり,これらは今日の標準治療薬に位置づけられている.現在,数多くのうつ病治療薬が使用可能となっているが,うつ病治療の臨床的課題(unmet medical needs)は,複数の抗うつ薬による治療を試みても十分な効果が得られない患者が一定数存在することである.このため,近年のうつ病治療薬の臨床開発では,既存治療薬で効果不十分な患者を対象とした第2選択薬の開発が増加し,そして新規性の高い作用機序を有する化合物の開発が行われている.現在,臨床開発の段階にある化合物には,アミノ酸関連,神経ペプチド類関連の作用機序を有するものがあり,うつ病のモノアミン仮説を超える化合物が開発対象となっている.精神神経領域の医薬品開発を目的とした臨床試験の基本デザインはプラセボ対照比較試験であるが,臨床試験の成功割合は高くはなく,プラセボに対する優越性を示すことも容易ではない.近年は,臨床試験におけるプラセボ反応性が増加傾向にあり,その要因についても検討が進められている.これらの有効性評価に影響を及ぼす要因を特定し,より適切な臨床評価方法を検討していくことは重要であり,精神神経領域におけるレギュラトリーサイエンスの課題と考える.

Microsatellite markers were developed for the endangered orchid Calanthe izu-insularis (Orchidaceae). This species is unique to the Izu Islands in Japan. Unfortunately, its population size has decreased because of excessive collection for horticultural purposes. In addition, although natural hybridization between C. izu-insularis and C. discolor var. discolor has been reported, morphological differences between C. izu-insularis and the hybridized individuals remain unclear. Using next-generation sequencing, 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed. All developed markers could amplify C. aristulifera and nine markers could amplify C. d. var. discolor, two other orchid species that are also endangered in Japan. The number of alleles and expected heterozygosity at each locus were 1–6 (mean, 2.35) and 0.00–0.79 (mean, 0.30), respectively. These microsatellite markers will help conservation geneticists in their investigation of the proportion of pure C. izu-insularis individuals in the Izu Islands.

This paper summaries the reports on early internal exposure to the public due to the accident of TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in March 2011 and the issues on the internal dose assessments. The results by whole-body-counter (WBC) measurement for early internal exposure showed that the committed effective doses to most of the residents were less than 1 mSv. Thyroid equivalent doses were much smaller than the mean thyroid dose in the Chernobyl accident. Through the internal exposure measurements made so far, there are the issues such as lack of the data associated with the internal dose assessments, radioactivity measurement by the WBC, selection of intake scenarios, and internal dose assessments for insoluble and radiocesium-bearing radioactive particles with a high activity.

Instances of predation and scavenging of jellyfish (pelagic Scyphozoa, Hydrozoa and Ctenophora) by benthic invertebrates are reviewed and presented. Sea anemones and decapod crabs are widespread as well as common predators or scavengers of jellyfish. Dead or dying jellyfish are also preyed upon by species of Echinodermata.

A 53-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of cellulitis and osteomyelitis. Twenty-four days after the initiation of daptomycin and sulbactam/ampicillin, he developed a fever and pulmonary infiltration. Bronchoalveolar lavage revealed a high number of eosinophils, while an intracutaneous test revealed positivity for daptomycin. The patient improved after discontinuing antimicrobial therapy. The plasma daptomycin minimum concentration (Cmin) was elevated (27.4 μg/mL), but plasma protein binding of daptomycin was low (87.8%). Although the pathophysiology of eosinophilic pneumonia remains unclear, antigenic stimulation due to daptomycin accumulation in the alveoli may have caused continuous immune activation.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening lung disease. Despite the availability of several approved drugs, the development of a new treatment method is needed because of poor prognosis. Tissue selective drug delivery systems can avoid the adverse effects of current therapy and enhance efficacy. We evaluated the possibility of delivering drugs to the lungs of a PH rat model using fluorescence dye-labeled nanosized liposomes. To evaluate the tissue distribution following systemic exposure, fluorescent dye-labeled, 40-180 nm liposomes with and without polyethylene glycol (PEG) were intravenously administered to a monocrotaline-induced PH (MCT) rat model and tissue fluorescence was measured. Fluorescent dye-containing liposomes were intratracheally administered to the MCT model to evaluate the distribution of the liposome-encapsulated compound following local administration to reduce systemic exposure. The lung vascular permeability, plasma concentration of surfactant protein (SP)-D, lung reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and macrophage marker gene cluster of differentiation (CD68) expression were measured. PEG and 80-nm liposome accumulation in the lung was elevated in the MCT model compared to that in normal rats. The intratracheally administered liposomes were delivered selectively to the lungs of the MCT model. The lung vascular permeability, plasma SP-D concentration, and CD68 expression were significantly elevated in the lungs of the MCT model, and were all significantly and positively correlated to liposome lung accumulation. Liposomes can accumulate in the lungs of an MCT model by enhancing vascular permeability by the inflammatory response. Therefore, drug encapsulation in liposomes could be an effective method of drug delivery in patients with PH.

Research has suggested that regulatory fit creates value. In this study, the regulatory fit was defined as the fit between the regulatory focus and the advertising messages. We investigated the effects of regulatory fit on the evaluation of messages when familiarity with the message was low. This hypothesis was supported by two observations; when the familiarity with a message was low, regulatory fit was not observed among participants with a prevention focus. In contrast, regulatory fit was observed among participants with a promotion focus, with a higher preference for two-sided advertising. The significance of familiarity on the effects of regulatory fit and value is discussed.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether a commitment to the study of art affects how students receive inspiration from their external environment. The frequency and intensity of external inspiration is compared in art majors versus non-art majors. In addition, we examine whether attitudes developed through the study of art are correlated with inspiration. Specifically, we focus on attitudes to art-making and art appreciation. We developed psychological scales and questionnaires to measure three parameters: (a) the frequency and intensity of inspiration from the external environment, (b) self-evaluation of art-making, and (c) attitudes toward art appreciation. We then asked 190 undergraduates who majored in the fine arts and 189 undergraduates with non-art majors to complete these questionnaires. The results show that art majors experience inspiration from their external environment more frequently and intensely than non-art majors. Attitudes toward art-making and appreciation, which differed between non-art majors and art majors, were positively correlated with externally-derived inspiration.

大豆レシチンは, 食品工業分野における重要な界面活性剤であり, 大豆から抽出した原油に加水し, 分離したガム質を乾燥することにより得られる。この総説では, 先ず品質の良いレシチンを得るために重要な問題点と, 筆者らで実用化した粗レシチンの直接濾過法による新規な精製法について紹介し, 近年開発され市販されている脱脂レシチン, 分別レシチン, 酵素分解レシチン, 水素添加およびヒドロキシル化等の化学修飾レシチンの製造法と特徴についても紹介した。これらの新規な製造法によって得られる生理機能に優れたレシチンが, 食品分野のみならず医薬・化粧品分野へも発展していくことを期待する。

生糸の機械的性質 (強度, 伸度及びヤング率) が約1,800日にわたり, 種々の湿度の下で測定された。生糸の湿度調整は飽和塩溶液を用い, デシケーター中で行った。日数が経つほど生糸の劣化は低湿度より高湿度中で促進される。生糸に含まれるセリシンは多量の水を吸うので, 練糸と比較すると, 強度の低下及び伸度の上昇が著しい。動的弾性率と機械的性質と同様の傾向を示した。

Source term for severe accident analysis of molten salt reactors(MSRs) has been investigated as part of preliminary efforts to develop MSRs. As a severe accident of MSRs, exposure of heated fluoride fuel molten salt to atmosphere was assumed to take place. Vaporization of fluoride molten salt was studied by means of the two methods, the Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry as well as the transpiration method. The former was applied to pseudo-binary fluoride systems to clarify the behaviors of cesium and iodine in the fluoride molten salt. The latter was applied to the mixture of CsI and FLiNaK. These experiments were carried out as the first step of the source term studies, so that interaction with air components has not been covered yet. From this study, useful information related to the source term for MSRs have been obtained. This work suggests how to solve the problem to establish the source term for severe accident analysis of MSRs.

Recent clinical research utilizing noninvasive functional measurement techniques has indicated that placebo effects might be therapeutically useful, because clear responses to placebo administration have been observed in patients' brains. Both physiological and mental states are affected by placebo and a role of brain receptor(s) was suggested. Factors influencing the placebo effect are the Pavlov reaction, expectation, cognition, and conditioning. Further, the nocebo effect is a negative reaction caused by anxiety, which acts as a confounding factor. Different outcomes may be obtained depending upon whether the placebo effect is evaluated in terms of objective or subjective responses. Correlation analyses of outcomes from various clinical trials indicate that placebo improves subjective response more effectively than objective parameters. Psychosocial care of patients is an important aspect of welfare, and a better understanding of the mechanism of the placebo effect will be helpful in this regard. Cognitive therapy is well known to be as efficacious as antidepressant medication for treating depression. Therefore, we studied the relationship between activity in the cerebral prefrontal area and counseling intervention. Aromatherapy is known to be effective to improve mood. We thus evaluated the influence of counseling on the efficacy of aromatherapy in healthy young women. Participants in a room filled with the fragrance of bergamot completed both a self-reported questionnaire (motivation, feeling of drowsiness and general fatigue) and multi-dimensional fatigue inventory-20 (MFI-20). Further, as an objective measure of changes in stress, blood flow in the inferior frontal cortex was evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). MFI-20 showed that the combination of aromatherapy with counseling significantly improved both brain activity and motivation, as compared to aromatherapy alone, though the self-reported questionnaire showed no significant difference. Regional blood flow in the inferior frontal cortex was significantly decreased by exposure to aromatherapy with counseling, compared to aromatherapy alone (p<0.05). The value of the NIRS-derived laterality index (LI), which is considered to be a measure of stress, was decreased by aromatherapy with counseling. Thus, we confirmed that the combination of aromatherapy with counseling intervention significantly improved mood and stress. Our results also demonstrated that counseling intervention increased the effectiveness of aromatherapy.

Many methods of recovery of uranium from seawater have been suggested : coprecipitation, adsorption, ion flotation, solvent extraction, and others. Of these, only the adsorption method using a suitable solid adsorbent seems to be feasible with regard to economic and envirom ental impacts. Extensive investigations of adsorbents have been carried out. Among the various organic resins, chelating resins containing amidoxime groups have been selected. A novel amidoxime-group-containing adsorbent of hollow-fiber form was prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto a polyethylene hollow fiber, followed by chemical conversion of the produced cyano group to an amidoxime group. The fixed-bed adsorption column, 30 cm in length and charged with the bundle of amidoxime hollow-fibers, was found to adsorb uranium from seawater at a sufficiently high rate : 0.66 mg uranium per g of adsorbent in 25 days.
