メタノールはこれまで生活環境中の空気汚染物質として,あまり注目されてこなかったが,自動車用燃料や燃料電池の水素源として新たな用途が広がりつつあり,生活環境中にメタノールガスが拡散する可能性が指摘されている。二酸化マンガンは室温でホルムアルデヒドと反応し二酸化炭素を生成することから,空気清浄材料の成分として実用に供されている。この二酸化マンガンが常温でメタノールガスをホルムアルデヒドにまで酸化できれば,ホルムアルデヒドの酸化分解と同様に常温常圧下で二酸化炭素にまで無機化できる可能性がある。そこで本研究では,物性の異なる4種類の二酸化マンガン粒子とメタノールガスの反応性を密閉式試験で調べた。その結果,室温において試験容器内の気中メタノール濃度は著しく減衰し,その減衰速度は二酸化マンガン粒子の比表面積に依存的であった。同時に気中二酸化炭素濃度の有意な増加が観測され,二酸化炭素への転化率は結晶構造に関係した。また反応容器中に中間体として極微量のホルムアルデヒドおよびギ酸種の生成を認めた。このことから,二酸化マンガンがメタノールガスに対しても常温酸化分解活性を有することが明らかとなった。

A 74-year-old man presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and underwent neck clipping of a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm 10 years ago. This patient presented with SAH again due to rupture of a de novo aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery (A-com. aneurysm). The A-com. aneurysm was clipped successfully. The “old” left MCA aneurysm was then inspected. A collapsed “old” aneurysmal dome and a previously applied clip were identified. The “old” aneurysmal dome was resected for histopathological examination. The wall of this aneurysmal dome varied in thickness and consisted of a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue. Fibroblasts were scattered in the aneurysmal wall and either the muscular layer or internal elastic lamina was absent. The aneurysmal dome collapsed to a certain degree, but the lumen of the dome was completely intact. In addition, neovascularization of microcapillaries was observed both inside and outside the aneurysmal dome. Some of these microcapillaries were filled with fresh erythrocytes. Thus the aneurysmal wall was apparently “vigorous.” The previous orifice of the aneurysm did not fuse together at all and could be opened widely with ease during preparation for histopathologic examination. We speculated that the clipped aneurysmal dome survived for 10 years for the following reasons: 1) Although the mechanism of neovascularization of the microcapillaries is unclear, the clipped aneurysmal dome may have obtained nourishment from the microcapillaries. 2) The cerebrospinal fluid may have incubated the dome and provided optimal circumstances for its survival. Considering the radical cure for ruptured cerebral aneurysms by neck clipping or coil embolization, the findings described in this report will be valuable for neurosurgeons and neurointerventionists. Regardless of the time since treatment, ruptured aneurysms treated by either neck clipping and/or coil embolization are at risk of recurrent subarachnoid hemorrhage when the blood re-enters the aneurysms in cases such as clip slip-off or coil compaction.

開発メンバーも100人を超えた。ハードよりもソフトに重きが置かれ、担当が細分化した。担当者は自分の領域にだけ詳しくなり、全体像を把握しないまま開発が進められる。もはや古賀が好むスモールイズビューティフルではなかった。

2002年に厚生労働省が行った労働者健康状況調査の資料を基に,週休1日制と完全週休2日制の労働者の健康状態を比較した.資料にはそれぞれの集団の特徴の記述はなかったが,週休1日制の労働者の疲労部位の特徴はサービス関係の職種に似ていたものの,ストレスはサービス関係の職種より明らかに低く,特定の職種に偏った集団とは考えにくかった.週休1日制の労働者の平均年齢は,高血圧を有する者の割合から考えて,若くはなく,また,痛風や肝臓病が比較的多かったことから,比較的男性の多い集団と思われた.このような特徴は必ずしも良好な健康状態を担保しないにも拘わらず,週休1日制の労働者の,特に精神的な健康状態は,完全週休2日制の労働者より良好であった.連続した休日は精神的疲労の回復には必ずしも効率が良いとは限らない可能性が考えられた.

Morphology, abundance and vertical distribution of vesicles were studied in a thick (40-60 m) andesitic lava flow, that lies in the underground of Kumamoto City. The vesicles are frozen bubbles that were fomed in the molten lavas at the time of its eruption. The lava can be divided into three zones: (1) an upper vesicular zone (2) a middle non-vesicular and compact zone and (3) a lower, thinner vesicular zone. The vesicles in the upper zone are elongated vertically, probably due to bouyancy-driven ascent of the bubbles, and those in the lower zone are flattened and elongated horizontally, that may be ascribed to a viscous shear flow at the bottom of the lava flow. Size distribution of the vesicles typically display nearly the log-normal distribution. Abundance, the mean size and the number density of the vesicles are greater in the upper zone than in the lower zone. Such vesicle distribution pattern is consistent to the hypothesis that the lava originally contained abundant bubbles when it was poured on the ground and then the bubbles started to ascent in the lava. Vesicles in the lower zone were the bubbles trapped by the advancing cooling front from the bottom surface of the lava. Bubbles that have escaped from the cold trap below have been accumulated in the upper zone and have been frozen in the lava upon cooling from the top surface. Mass balance calculation, however, indicates that much of the bubbles that were originally present in the lava, have been escaped through the lava surface. A dynamic cooling model was, therefore, proposed, that is to say, in the presence of surface flow in the lave during its cooling, impermeable lava crusts may not be maimtained so that gas bubbles may leak out of the lava into the air.

小笠原諸島父島の二見湾湾口部に位置する口之瀬沖水深46mより、エクレアナマコ1個体が発見されたので報告する。これは本種の小笠原諸島初記録であり、また北半球においては沖縄島に次ぐ記録である。
