本稿は小売経営においてすでに重要課題の1つとされているパートタイマー活用の現状と展望についての文献サーベイを行う。パート活用の内実は、職場における量的な基幹化と質的な基幹化であり、それらの実態のみならず、基幹化に対する企業の反応に着目して検討する。調査に基づく諸研究によると、小売業においてパートタイマーの量的および質的基幹化の進展が認められ、また小売企業の今後の基幹化意欲も旺盛である。ただし、小売業における今後の一層のパート基幹化には、基幹化によって職場に発生する諸問題を回避することや、基幹化を促すための処遇制度をさらに整備することなどが必要となる。

Recently, scientific evidence supports a connection between environmental chemical exposures, which includes insecticides, and development of type 2 diabetes. However, there is limited information about the link between influences of neonicotinoid insecticides and incidence of type 2 diabetes. Thus, the purpose of the study was to determine effects of imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, on glucose metabolism. Three different cell models were used; adipocytes (3T3-L1), hepatocytes (HepG2), and myotubes (C2C12). These cells were treated with imidacloprid (0, 10, and 20 μM) for 4-6 days followed by treatment with insulin for 15 min to determine responses. Insulin stimulated glucose uptake was reduced by imidacloprid in all three cell culture models. Treatment with imidacloprid reduced phosphorylation of protein kinase B (AKT), one of the major regulators of insulin signaling, without changing overall AKT expression. Subsequently, imidacloprid reduced phosphorylation of ribosomal S6 kinase (S6K), which is a downstream target of AKT and also a feed-back inhibitor of insulin signaling. These results suggest that imidacloprid could induce insulin resistance by affecting the insulin signaling cascade, particularly up-stream of AKT, in adipocytes, liver, and muscle.

The ability to communicate effectively has a profound impact on academic ability and social status in the United States. As such, communication avoidance may impart critical consequences on individuals who suffer from it. Within the communication discipline, communication avoidance is an extensive body of research with a relatively long history. Central to communication avoidance research is the concept of communication apprehension (CA). However, in comparison with research conducted in the United States, CA research in Japan remains in its genesis. This review thus focuses on communication apprehension and related constructs. Starting with an explanation of the magnitude of the problem of communication avoidance, a definition of CA is presented, and an overview of the related constructs of reticence, shyness, and other communication-related fears is introduced. Basic CA treatment programs and personality correlates of CA are also covered. The review closes by offering suggestions for future CA research in Japan.

The Flemish humanist Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) is well-known for his restoration of Stoicism in early modern Europe. His main works, Introduction to Stoic Philosophy and Natural Philosophy of the Stoics, both published in Antwerp in 1604, prompted the reception of Stoicism in the seventeenth century and laid the foundation for its modern reconstruction.Lipsius tried to reconcile Stoic philosophy with Christian theology. Although the importance of his Christianized interpretation was recognized, scholars have paid little attention to the real motivation that led him to write the Introduction and Natural Philosophy. The preface to Introduction shows clearly that his primary aim was the exposition of Seneca's philosophy. Indeed, Lipsius's heavy reliance on the Roman philosopher and other Latin authors has been criticized since the publication of his works. According to this criticism, Lipsius ignored so many Greek sources that his reconstruction of Stoicism is invalid from a philological point of view. However, can his partial selection of sources not be viewed from different angles? Is it not his reading of Seneca's work that enabled him to harmonize Stoicism with Christian doctrines?To answer these questions I shall focus on Lipsius's theory of evil and the cosmic cycle, expounded in Natural Philosophy. My analysis will show that Seneca's eclecticism played an important role in the Lipsian reconstruction of Stoicism.

National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) started to develop H-II launch vehicle in 1983 and succeeded in the 1st flight on February in 1994. Meanwhile, several troubles were experienced in the development of LE-7 which is the 1st stage engine of H-II. The LE-7 is a staged combustion cycle engine with high pressure and high Isp like SSME. Therefore, high delivery pressure and high performance were required for LH2 turbopump, which is the main key component, and caused several troubles in the development. This paper describes the development of LH2 turbopump containing the design description, the contents of some troubles and their counterplans. In addition, some activities to solve turbopump life and endurance will be introduced.

Increasing use of tobacco and its related health problems are a great concern in the world. Recent epidemiological findings have demonstrated the positive association between cigarette smoking and several gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, including peptic ulcer and cancers. Interestingly, smoking also modifies the disease course of ulcerative colitis (UC). Nicotine, a major component of cigarette smoke, seems to mediate some of the actions of cigarette smoking on the pathogenesis of GI disorders. Nicotine worsens the detrimental effects of aggressive factors and attenuates the protective actions of defensive factors in the processes of development and repair of gastric ulceration. Nicotine also takes part in the initiation and promotion of carcinogenesis in the GI tract. In this regard, nicotine and its metabolites are found to be mutagenic and have the ability to modulate cell proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis during tumoriogenesis through specific receptors and signalling pathways. However, to elucidate this complex pathogenic mechanism, further study at the molecular level is warranted. In contrast, findings of clinical trials give promising results on the use of nicotine as an adjuvant therapy for UC. The beneficial effect of nicotine on UC seems to be mediated through multiple mechanisms. More clinical studies are needed to establish the therapeutic value of nicotine in this disease.

We herein present the case of a 69-year-old Japanese man who had unprotected sexual contact with a local commercial sex worker in an East Asian country and was diagnosed as having disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI). The organism was confirmed to be Neisseria gonorrhoeae based on 16S rRNA sequencing and positive results for the cppB gene. This case indicates that a diagnosis of DGI should also be considered in elderly individuals. DGI potentially causes many complications, and the pathogen has recently been reported to be resistant to various antibiotics. Physicians must therefore pay more attention to the possible occurrence of DGI in various clinical settings.

Manganese oxide nanoparticles can be obtained simply by mixing surfactant/water/oil ternary systems containing dialkyldimethylammonium chloride, manganese(II) nitrate hexahydrate, and n-hexane. This finding is valuable in the design of a one-pot synthesis of nanoparticles from microemulsion systems.

In 2 individual cases of canine mast cell tumors, we identified 2 novel c-KIT mutations in exon 11: a 9-base pair (bp) deletion (c.1663-1671del) and a point mutation (c.1676T>A). The 9-bp deletion mutation caused a loss of 3 amino acids, corresponding to p.Gln555_Lys557del, and the point mutation resulted in the substitution of valine by aspartic acid (p.Val559Asp) in the juxtamembrane domain of the protein. Imatinib mesylate, a therapeutic agent for canine mast cell tumors, was used to treat both tumors. Complete remission was achieved at 33 and 14 days after administration, respectively. However, in both cases, the therapeutic response subsequently tapered with the duration of remission lasting 66 and 255 days, respectively. Although these 2 novel c-KIT mutations in exon11 were not confirmed to be gain-of-function mutations, a further study may help clarify relevance between mutations identified in this report and responsiveness.

Teaching the three health principles and proper use of medicines are the basis of education on medicines. Before seeking prescription drugs, day-to-day health management is important. It is also important to understand that if a minor ailment persists, self-treatment with over-the-counter medications should be attempted. Since medications are double-edged swords, their proper use is the responsibility of patients to minimize the risk and maximize the effectiveness. This awareness should be taught during education on how to use medicines. A better understanding of medicines and fostering awareness through education on medicines will contribute to reductions in healthcare costs and promote the health of patients when they participate in their own care and learn how to self-medicate.

Inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 is the major cause of drug-drug interactions (DDI). We have previously reported that the genetic variation of CYP3A4 significantly affected the inhibitory profiles of typical competitive inhibitors. In addition to competitive inhibition, some clinically significant DDI are attributable to mechanism-based inhibition (MBI). However, the differences in the MBI kinetics among CYP3A4 genetic variants remain to be characterized. In this study, we quantitatively investigated the inhibition kinetics of MBI inhibitors, erythromycin and clarithromycin, on the CYP3A4 variants CYP3A4.1, 4.2, 4.7, 4.16, and 4.18. The activity of CYP3A4 was assessed using testosterone 6β-hydroxylation with recombinant CYP3A4. Both erythromycin and clarithromycin decreased the activity of CYP3A4 in a time-dependent manner. The maximum inactivation rate constants, kinact,max, of erythromycin for CYP3A4.2 and CYP3A4.7 were 0.5-fold that for CYP3A4.1, while that for CYP3A4.16 and CYP3A4.18 were similar to that for CYP3A4.1. The KI values of erythromycin for CYP3A4.2, 4.7, 4.16, and 4.18 were 1.2-, 0.4-, 2.2- and 0.72-fold those of CYP3A4.1, respectively. Similar results were obtained for clarithromycin. In conclusion, the inhibitory profiles of MBI inhibitors, as well as competitive inhibitors, may possibly differ among CYP3A4 variants. This difference may contribute to interindividual differences in the extent of DDI based on MBI.

When we discuss advances in longevity research during lectures and seminars, the question of the deciding factor for longevity often comes up. Even without looking at examples of research in molecular biology research, it is obvious to most that genetics play a major factor in longevity. The longest-lived human recorded was a French woman named Jeanne Calment, who died at age 122. All her family was long-lived. The quest for the identification of longevity genes by studying centenarian families has been explored for a decade, but no bona-fide longevity gene was identified. The environmental factors influencing the lifespan of human beings, such as nutrition, physical exercise, and mental relaxation play an important role in the determination of an individual lifespan. The mortality rates of lifestyle-related diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer becoming getting higher and higher in Japan as well as in western countries where much of the population is graying. The preventive measures for lifestyle-related diseases such as nutritional intervention or regular physical exercise should be introduced for further extension of the healthy lifespan. Caloric restriction in experimental animals has been shown to extend the lifespan of animals with the decreased frequency of age-related diseases. Regular physical exercise stimulates the adipose tissues to secrete beneficial adipose hormones, such as adiponectin that suppress the progression of atherosclerosis and insulin resistance in type II DM and metabolic syndrome. In my presentation, I will focus on the Japanese-style diets, physical exercises, and challenging spirit towards life, of the people living in the Nagano prefecture village, which were enrolled in the study. Interestingly, the telomere length of the people in this village is significantly longer than the people living in other parts of Japan. The reason is, in my opinion, the fact that these villagers live in a pristine environment, at high altitude, having the walk up and down the slopes every day, thus doing a very healthy exercise without them even knowing. Most of them are involved in agriculture, mainly growing apples and grapes, as well as growing their own organic vegetables and gardening. The stress level of daily life is close to zero. The water source is clean springs coming off the top of the mountains; the air is clean and full of minus ions coming off the surrounding forests. These environmental factors may play an important role in the extension of healthy lifespan in longevity village in Japan.
