以下のような状況を考えよう. ある競馬ファンが, なるべく多くの配当を得ようと, 各馬の過去の成績やオッズ等の情報に基づいて勝ち馬を予測するプログラムを作ろうとした. このようなプログラムを作るために, 彼はまず熟練ギャンブラー(以下, エキスパート)にどのような戦略を用いているのかを説明してくれるように頼むことにした. ところが, 彼は競馬は勘であって, 説明できるような戦略などないと言う. しかし, 具体的にいくつかのレース情報のリストを与えられると, このエキスパートは「最近の勝率の最も高い馬に賭けろ」とか「オッズの最も高い馬に賭けろ」などの経験則を問題なく見つけることができたという. 確かにこのような経験則はおおざっぱであまり高い精度のルールとは言えないが, ただランダムに賭けているよりは少しはましな予測ができると思われる. また, エキスパートの意見をいくつもの異なるレース情報リストについて聞くことにより, 競馬ファンは数多くの経験則を習得できる. さて, こうして得られた経験則を上手に利用するには, 競馬ファンは以下の二つの問題を解決しなくてはならない. 一つめは, エキスパートに提示すべきレース情報リストの集合をどのように定めるかという問題であり, 二つめは獲得された数多くの経験則をどのようにまとめて一つの精度の高いルールを得るかという問題である. 「ブースティング」とは, このような設定の下, 数多くの精度の低いルールを組み合わせて非常に精度の高い予測ルールを得るための, 汎用的かつ理論的な性能保証のある方式である. この解説文では, ブースティングに関する最近の研究成果の中から, 特にこれまで多くの理論的な検証と実験的実証がなされてきた AdaBoost というアルゴリズムを取り上げる. まず3章で AdaBoost アルゴリズムを紹介し, 4~7章でブースティングの理論的な基盤について説明する. ここでは, 特にブースティングがなぜ「過学習」を避けられるかについても議論する. そして, 8章ではブースティングを用いた実験と応用について述べる.

楕円代数という名の国があります. 最近までは, この国のことを詳しく記した地図はありませんでした. この国には楕円関数に付随した代数の秘密が伝わっていると謂われています. それはBaxter達の模型を開ける大事な鍵になると信じられています. Baxter達の模型の臨界点での振舞を読み解く鍵となったのは共形場理論でした. 臨界点から離れたところを探るために, 次の鍵を見つけよつとして, 多くの人々が何年にも亘って知恵を出し合いました. 紆余曲折の末, それでも懸命に進み, 目的地へのある扉を叩くことになった人達がいました.

不眠はありふれた訴えであるが,その原因はさまざまで,睡眠薬以外の治療法が適切な不眠や,睡眠薬により悪化する睡眠障害があるため,薬物療法開始前に十分な鑑別が必要である.催眠作用をもつ薬物として,バルビツール酸系睡眠薬,非バルビツール系睡眠薬,ベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬,非ベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬,抗ヒスタミン作用をもつ薬剤がある.慢性の非器質性不眠症に対して効果・安全性とも優れているのはベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬,非ベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬である.健忘,転倒などの副作用や常用量依存の防止のため,1)治療目標を控えめに設定する,2)少量を毎日服用する,3)エタノールと併用しない,4)患者の自己判断で用量を変更しない,など服薬指導を行う.不眠への不安・恐怖感を緩和し,不眠を悪化させる習慣を是正するため,「眠くないのに無理に布団の中で過ごさない」など認知行動療法の併用が有効である.<br>

Informational communicative technologies and social networking servicebased on the Internet have enabled the emergence of new sorts ofcommunities and communicative practices of everyday life. This articleaddresses the phenomenon of Internet-based group, generally referred to asonline community. Analyzed through the lens of contemporary approach byan intensive fieldwork, online community study would contribute to debatesin the literature which seeks to the epistemological positionality ofresearcher different from the qualitative method about the face-to-facegroupings traditionally thought of as communities.

In his film "Strike", Eisenstein abruptly cuts from a shot of the slaughter of workers to one of the slaughter of a steer. Such a cutting is understood as a typical example of film metaphor, while it has been not incontrovertible among theorists whether it is a real metaphor. Do film metaphors or, more generally, visual metaphors exist in the world? We could enumerate three types of traditional theories of metaphor, i.e. the substitution, the comparison, and the interaction theory. These have a conception in common that metaphor is, just like synecdoche and metonymy, a relation between two things referred to by two words. Meanwhile, influenced by Max Black's epistemological view of metaphor, philosophers often use the word 'metaphor' in the expanded sense including 'analog-model' or 'symbol'. It is sure that an analog-model is a mode of recognizing the world based on the relation between two things. But metaphor is, we claim, nothing other than a linguistic phenomenon of predicative modification of a subject. If it is true, it follows that metaphor in its proper form can not appear at the dimension of such visual images as paintings and films.

情報を伝達するための文字の並びを「テキスト」と呼ぶ.テキスト中に出現するさまざまな構成要素は,その出現位置によって他の要素と関係づけられている.この要素どうしの関係が織りなす空間はどのようなものになるだろうか?言語処理の分野では,このような空間は「意味」と密接な関係があると考える.そして空間上での距離が近いものは,何らかの意味的な近さをもつという前提のもとに,さまざまな類似度尺度が適用される.本稿では,テキストをめぐるさまざまな「共起」事象について述べ,これらを扱うための統計的手法や適用事例を紹介する.

This study investigated the uses and impacts of information sources, such as web sites, alumni and friends, during college student job hunting. Forty-nine college students (27 males, 22 females) were surveyed longitudinally regarding the information they sought for. This information was categorized into four types: company characteristics, company impression, job hunting methods, and self during job hunting. Results showed that there was a specific information medium that enabled the participants to acquire the required information easily. In particular, participants indicated that the information obtained from alumni was useful, as well as generally fruitful. However, web sites and friends were not particularly effective information sources with regard to obtaining desired results.

The ancient kingdom of Israel, which consisted of 12 tribes, was in circa 922 B.C. divided into the southern kingdom of Judah and the northern kingdom of Israel. 10 tribes out of the 12 belonged to the northern kingdom and the rest to the southern kingdom. The people of the northern kingdom were exiled to Assyria in 722 B.C. never to return to Israel. They are called the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. They were dispersed all over the world. Their descendants are found not only in the western world, but also in the eastern world especially along the Silk Road. Japan and Israel are geographically far from each other and seemingly unrelated nations. However, the two nations are remarkably similar in mythology, religious rituals, language, daily customs, etc. Some of the Japanese and Jewish scholars who are conversant with the ancient cultures of Japan and Israel claim that numerous striking similarities between the two cultures are proofs indicating that the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel came to ancient Japan. The purpose of this paper is to examine the authenticity of their claim by making a comparisonof the ancient cultures of Japan and Israel, which may help solve some of the cultural riddles of Japan such as why Japanese like rectangles or why Japanese have numbers in their names.

The antarctic whaling tanker, "Nisshin Maru" (22, 000 tons deadweight) was successfully built on 28th Sept. '36 by the Kawasaki Dockyard Co., Ltd., Kobe, in the record of only 216 days from laying down of the keel to the delivery to Messrs. Taiyohogei Kabushiki Kaisha. The vessel is the largest tanker of its kind ever built in Japan, and the following dates indicate the extraordinary speedy program at which she was built in such a short period.[table]There were many difficulties which they had to overcome, such as : difficult construction on an ordinary building slip not well arranged with up-to-date crane equipments, unusual short time limit of construction, and hardship of prompt collection of materials, etc. They laid down therefore a strict schedule so as not to delay the delivery and by good luck, it was faithfully obeyed by the men of all departments of the Dockyard Co. Combined with the mutual co-operation of all men and proper supply of all necessary materials, the schedule was very satisfactorily carried out in good order. On the other hand, special attention was also paid to the working hours as well as labour shifts so that the workmen should not be overworked either mentally or physically. Thus their earnest efforts have at last produced good results with such an epochmaking record of speely ship building which has never been experienced in the world. In addition, this vessel adopted the "Isherwood Bracketless system, " the simplicity of which has proved a good effect upon such a quick work as "Nisshin Maru." デジタルカメラの小型化, 高解像度化, 一般化に伴い, これを入力手段として用いた文字認識・文書画像解析への期待が高まりつつある.本稿では, デジタルカメラを用いた文字認識・文書画像解析について現在の代表的な技術を俯瞰するとともに, バーコードなどの関連技術との比較によって, 文字認識, 文書画像解析の立場や将来への課題を浮き彫りにする.また, 将来に向けた試みの一つとして, 著者らが「バーコードリーダ並みに手軽で高精度な文字認識」を目指して行っている研究「複比を用いた文字への情報埋め込み」の一端についても紹介する.
