The pharmacological effects of intramuscular (IM) administration of alfaxalone combined with medetomidine and butorphanol were evaluated in 6 healthy beagle dogs. Each dog received three treatments with a minimum 10-day interval between treatments. The dogs received an IM injection of alfaxalone 2.5 mg/kg (ALFX), medetomidine 2.5 µg/kg and butorphanol 0.25 mg/kg (MB), or their combination (MBA) 1 hr after the recovery from their instrumentation. Endotracheal intubation was attempted and dogs were allowed to breath room air. Neuro-depressive effects (behavior changes and subjective scores), and cardiorespiratory parameters (rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, direct blood pressure, central venous pressure and blood gases) were evaluated before and at 2 to 120 min after IM treatment. Each dog became lateral recumbency, except for two dogs administered the MB treatment. The duration was longer in the MBA treatment compared with the ALFX treatment (100 ± 48 min vs. 46 ± 13 min). Maintenance of the endotracheal tube lasted for 60 ± 24 min in five dogs administered the MBA treatment and for 20 min in one dog administered the ALFX treatment. Cardiorespiratory variables were maintained within clinically acceptable ranges, although decreases in heart and respiratory rates, and increases in central venous pressure occurred after the MBA and MB treatments. The MBA treatment provided an anesthetic effect that permitted endotracheal intubation without severe cardiorespiratory depression in healthy dogs.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify activation of the infraspinatus and scapular stabilizing muscles during shoulder external rotation at various shoulder elevation angles. [Subjects] Twenty subjects participated in this study and all measurements were performed on the right shoulder. [Methods] Isometric shoulder external rotation strength and surface electromyographic data were measured with the shoulder at 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° elevation in the scapular plane. The electromyographic data were collected from the infraspinatus, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior muscles. These measurements were compared across the various shoulder elevation angles. [Results] The strength measurements did not differ significantly by angulation. The infraspinatus activity was 92%, 75%, 68%, and 57% of the maximum voluntary contraction, which significantly decreased as shoulder elevation increased. The serratus anterior activity was 24%, 48%, 53%, and 62% of the maximum voluntary contraction, which significantly increased as shoulder elevation increased. [Conclusion] Shoulder external rotation torque was maintained regardless of shoulder elevation angle. The shoulder approximated to the zero position as the shoulder elevation increased so that infraspinatus activity decreased and the scapular posterior tilting by the serratus anterior might generate shoulder external rotation torque.

Phytosociological studies of the hedgerows in rather old villages were conducted in the Amami islands of southwestern Japan in 1988. Three types of hedgerows were recognized ; 1. Ficus-virgata-Ficus microcarpa type, 2. Garcinia subelliptica type, and 3. Viburnum suspensum Fraxinus insularis type. Based on more widely surveyed materials, these types were classified through species combination into the following three hedgerow groups. A. ficus virgata group, characterized by Ficus virgata, Viburnum awabuki etc. and occurring young limestone soil originating from elevated coral reefs. B. Viburnum suspensum-Podocalpus macrophyllus group, classified by the Presence of Podocarpus macrophyllus and Viburnum suspensum, and found on well weathered soil on old limestone. C. Codiaeumt variegatum-Bougainvillea spectabillis group, Characterised by ornamental garden species and planted in the developed towns and cities. The distribution of these first two hedgerow groups seems to correspond to the potential natural vegetation.

The physiological factors that relate to marathon running performance were studied in 24 marathoners of three different categories (Elite Runners, Good Runners and Slow Runners). Oxygen uptake at average marathon speed (AMS) was significantly correlated (r = 0.93) to performance in the marathoners. This showed a significant difference in the three categories. Also, this data indicate that marathon performance of sub 2: 30 (ER) and sub 3 : 00 (GR) need respectively above 54 ml/kg/min and 45 ml/kg/min during the race. It was suggested that these differences at AMS were dependent on the difference VO_2/kg at 2.5 mM and 3.0 mM (r^2 = 82〜84%) in three categories. The two factors that contribute to VO_2/kg at 2.5 mM and 3.0 mM are: VO_2 max/kg (r = 0.83〜0.88) and average weekly distance (r = 0.64〜0.66). VO2/kg at fixed blood lactate concentration of 2.5 mM, 3.0 mM and 4.0 mM were significantly correlated to AMS (r=0.80〜0.82). There were no differences in the three categories in delta speed and V0_2/kg while increasing from 2.5 mM to 4.0 mM, which means the aerobic-anaerobic transition. The delta values were 20.8〜24.6 m/min in speed and 4.7〜5.6 ml/kg/min in V0_2. From these results, it is indicated that marathon running performance correlates closely to V0_2/ kg at AMS and velocity and V0_2/kg at fixed blood lactate concentration of 2.5 mM, 3.0 mM and 4.0 mM, which shows a significant difference in ER, GR and SR.

現代に生きるほとんどの日本人は「くずし字」で書かれた古典籍を読めず,大量に現存する古典籍の内容がわからなくなりつつある。そこで,負荷の高い翻刻の省力化を目的に,新方式OCRを開発した。くずし字を含む古典籍を対象とした原理検証実験の結果,一定の条件下で,精度80%以上の自動テキストデータ化が可能であることを実証した。新方式OCRでは,文字画像を位置情報とともに切り出した字形データベースを構築。この字形データベースから類似字形検索により翻刻対象古典籍の文字の文字コードを特定する。また,完全自動化ではなく,人手と自動処理を組み合わせた作業工程設計により翻刻の総合的な負荷軽減を目指す。新方式OCRの仕組みと,これを用いた翻刻の現況を報告する。

Background:Although stem cells have been regarded as a promising therapeutic option, the marginal therapeutic effects of stem cells are limitations that must be overcome for the development of effective cell therapy. This study sought to identify the angio-vasculogenic properties of endothelial differentiated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and to determine whether these cells are effective for vascular repair.Methods and Results:Adipose MSCs were cultured for 10 days under endothelial cell (EC) culture conditions. These endothelial cell differentiated adipose MSCs (EA) and undifferentiated adipose MSCs (UA) were characterized via angiogenesis and adhesion assays. These cells were transplanted into a hindlimb ischemia (HLI) model to determine therapeutic effects and their underlying mechanisms. EA displayed low adhesion and angiogenic properties in vitro compared with UA. When implanted into mouse HLI models, EA exhibited the decreased recovery of blood perfusion in limb ischemia than uncultured UA. Histology data showed that injected EA exhibited lower retention, angiogenic cytokine levels, and neovascularization in vivo than did UA. Short-term differentiated EA display less cell engraftment and angio-vasculogenic potential, and are less effective for peripheral vascular repair than UA.Conclusions:EC differentiation of MSCs may not present an effective strategy for the promotion of therapeutic neovascularization.

近代語研究の進展に貢献し得る比較的新しい資料に、いわゆるSP(平円盤)レコードを音源とする各種の録音資料がある。しかしこの資料に関しては、言語(特に、話しことば)の研究にとって重要な要素である「音声」を有しているという事実があるにも拘わらず、その活用という点では、必ずしも十分な成果がもたらされていないというのが、客観的に見た現在の状況である。そこで本稿では、録音資料に関するこれまでの経過、並びに、最新のニュースや試みの実態を詳しく伝えるとともに、録音資料のこれからの可能性について言及する。
