動物は、なわばりの維持、パートナーの選択と、さまざまな他個体との相互交渉を行いながら個の保存、主の保存を実現している。これらの社会行動は、嗅覚を中心とした社会信号が視床下部に送られ制御されているが、最近の研究でとくに神経ペプチドであるオキシトシンが重要な役割を果たしていることが分かってきた。我々は、この研究でオキシトシン欠損マウスが異性の匂いに対する選好性を失っていること、また、特に雌マウスでは初めての交尾時に雄をなかなか受け入れられないことを発見した。さらにラットを使った実験では、母親が仔ラットの匂いに惹きつけられるのにもオキシトシンが重要であることがわかった。

Menopausal symptoms, bone loss, changes in lipid profiles and reduction of insulin sensitivity due to an abrupt decrease in circulating estrogen level are well known in women during the menopausal transition. On the other hand, the effect of androgen on women’s health has not been fully elucidated. Circulating levels of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) gradually decrease with age in postmenopausal women, although transient increases have been observed during the menopausal transition. High testosterone level has been suggested to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased triglyceride, insulin resistance and increase in the risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Circulating DHEA-S level does not affect the risk of cardiovascular disease, mortality or lipid profiles in women. Female androgen insufficiency, which is characterized by the presence of reduced androgen level in circulation, leads to an impairment in sexual drive, reduced libido, depressed mood, and signs and symptoms of limited androgen exposure such as decreased muscle mass, reduced bone density and decreased sense of well-being. An appropriate level of androgen may play important roles in metabolic, psychological and sexual functions in women. 本研究では C++ オープンソース OpenFOAM を対象として,利用しているデータ交換形態,C++ テンプレートおよび MPI プラットフォームの特徴とその課題を述べた.また,「京」 コンピュータの Tofu 高機能バリア通信機能を活用して,データ型に合わせたテンプレートの追加による全体実行時間の軽減を確認した.また,OpenFOAM 特有の PstreamBuffer 全体データ交換形態を必要最小限の隣接データ交換形態に改良し,通信バッファサイズおよび通信時間が減少した.これらにより大規模並列処理を可能にして,アプリケーション全体の実行効率が大幅に向上した.

Liquid metal cooled reactors are currently one design option being considered as the next generation of power production by the Generation-IV international forum for the development of nuclear power plant designs. Currently, Russia, India, China, France, South Korea, and Japan are actively pursuing liquid metal cooled reactor concepts. The liquid metal coolants being considered for these designs are sodium, lead and lead-bismuth eutectic; these designs utilize reactive and toxic materials at temperatures up to 800℃for nuclear power plant operations. To simulate these systems with the actual coolant material requires a high level of safety systems. Therefore, a less toxic and less reactive liquid metal that can be used to simulate liquid metal cooled flows will allow for a greater number of investigations and experimentation of liquid metal flow with regards to the field of thermal hydraulics. Good candidates for a liquid metal experimental fluid are alloys from the indium-bismuth-tin system such as Field's metal, which by weight percent is 51% indium, 32.5% bismuth and 16.5% tin and possesses a melting temperature of 60℃. However, the thermodynamic properties of Field's metal and similar alloys in their liquid state are not well described in literature, especially for the temperature range for thermal hydraulic applications. Accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of a coolant is essential for understanding the physical phenomena associated with the flow of fluids. This work experimentally measures the specific heat of the indium-bismuth-tin tertiary system and analyzes the results to determine if the thermodynamic properties of the system are desirable for experimental modeling applications.

Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is useful to evaluate tissue perfusion in the kidney. In veterinary medicine, sedation or anesthesia may be required in uncooperative or panting patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the normal kidney perfusion patterns in conscious and anesthetized dogs using CEUS. Eight healthy beagles were used in this study. Scanning was performed in conscious dogs using manual restraint (conscious group), or under general anesthesia using tiletamine-zolazepam and medetomidine (TZM group) or medetomidine (M group). The contrast agent (Sonovue®) was administered as an IV bolus. The peak intensity (PI), time to peak enhancement from injection (TTP0) and the time to peak enhancement from the initial rise (TTPup), upslope, downslope and area under the curve (AUC) were analyzed. Compared to the cortical values in the conscious group, TTP0 was significantly delayed in the TZM group, and upslope, TTP0 and TTPup were significantly different in the M group. The AUCs in the TZM and M groups were not different from those in the conscious group. The upslope of renal medullary perfusion was significantly decreased in the TZM and M groups. TTP0 and TTPup were also significantly delayed in these groups. The AUC of the medulla was significantly decreased in the M group. Therefore, TZM is useful as an anesthetic protocol when performing CEUS, and the obtained data may serve as reference values in the evaluation of renal perfusion using CEUS in dogs under anesthesia.

A 3-year-old neutered female poodle with a long history of dermatophytic skin disease was presented with lethargy, anorexia and progressive weight loss. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed markedly enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes and multiple hypoechoic foci in the spleen. Cytology of the mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen showed granulomatous inflammation with fungal organisms and negatively stained intracytoplasmic bacterial rods consistent with Mycobacteria spp. Based on culture, multiplex polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis, the bacterium was identified as Mycobacterium avium subspecies hominissuis. Despite treatment with antibiotics, the dog’s condition deteriorated, and it died approximately 3 weeks after first presentation.

This study examined the difference in dog owning between Japan and the United States, and the effect of these differences on dogs’ behavioral characteristics. Behavioral evaluations of privately-owned dogs were obtained by using online questionnaire. We compared background and demographic information from the two countries and analyzed the effects of these differences on behavioral characteristics in dogs. The results indicated that there was a bias in the dog breeds kept in Japan compared to the United States and that Japanese dogs’ body weight was lower than the US dogs. The main source of dog acquisition was pet stores in Japan and breeders and/or shelters in the United States. Multiple linear regression analysis found that Japanese dogs showed more aggression to household members and higher energy, restlessness and fear of non-social stimuli than US dogs, while US dogs showed more fear of unfamiliar persons, separation-related behavior and excitability. US dogs also showed higher levels of trainability and attachment to owners. The lower dog's body weight was, the higher the behavioral scores except for trainability were. When dogs that were obtained under 3 months of age were analyzed, the younger the dogs were when their owners obtained them, the higher the scores on some behavioral problem factors were. The higher rates of problem behaviors among Japanese dogs compared with US dogs suggest that the preference for small breed dogs and poor early development environment influenced the behavioral characteristics of dogs.

本研究では、ユーザが閲覧している Web ページにふさわしい BGM を、自動的に選曲するという新しい楽曲検索(推薦)システムを提案する。閲覧ページのテキストに含まれる語彙の共起から、それらの語彙に関連する楽曲の検索、推薦を行う。そのためには、語彙の共起に基づく特徴空間と楽曲の音響的特徴空間とを関連付ける必要がある。我々は、線形変換を用いてこの関連付けを実装した。さらに、Web から収集した楽曲のレビューのようなテキストデータと、その楽曲の音響特徴量を用いて、関連付けの性能評価実験を行った。その結果、各楽曲に対し 1 つのレビューを利用するより、曲名とアーティスト名を含む Web ページを複数利用した場合に関連付け性能が高いことを確認した。A new music information retrieval application, WEB-BGM that automatically selects and plays the background music for the web page under browsing is proposed. In order to find for the song that is 'near' to the browsing page, the song is needed to be located in the document space. However, in general, the documents relevant to the song, e.g. reviews of the song, are not available for each songs. Therefore, we train a matrix that transforms a document vector onto acoustic space so that to find 'nearest' song to the web page in the acoustic space. The feasibility of the idea is confirmed through preliminary experiments using song reviews and Web pages including the song title and artist name.

Two cats with abdominal effusion and anorexia were diagnosed as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). We tried to evaluate the effect of thromboxane (Tx) synthetase inhibitor, ozagrel hydrochloride, on the progression of symptoms and clinicopathologic data characteristic to FIP. After administration of Tx synthetase inhibitor, improvement of appetite and activity, decreases of peritoneal effusion, reduction of leukocyte number to normal level, and improvement of hyper γ-globulinemia were found in 2 cats with FIP. These findings suggest that the vasculitis in FIP can be successfully treated with Tx synthetase inhibitor which inhibits platelet aggregation.

Three topics from electron microscopic studies of microorganisms carried out in my laboratory in recent ten years are described. 1) Influenza A virus was observed in water by an ice-embedding method using phase contrast electron microscopy developed in Japan. Virions appeared as spherical or elongated particles consisting of spikes, an envelope, and a core with high contrast. 2) A new term the “structome” was introduced and defined as “the quantitative and three-dimensional structural information of a whole cell at electron microscopic level.” We performed structome analyses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by using freeze-substitution and serial ultrathin sectioning electron microscopy. We found that there were one to four mitochondria and about 195,000 ribosomes in a cell. 3) In the deep-sea off the coast of Japan, we discovered a unique microorganism appearing to have cellular features intermediate between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The organism, named as the Myojin parakaryote, was two orders of magnitude larger than a typical bacterium and had a large “nucleoid”, surrounded by a single layered “nucleoid membrane”, and bacteria-like “endosymbionts”, but it lacked mitochondria. This organism exemplifies a potential evolutionary path between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and the presence of the organism supports the endosymbiotic theory for the origin of mitochondria and the karyogenetic hypothesis for the origin of the nucleus. These studies show that the electron microscopy is a powerful tool for studying a wide range of problems of microorganisms.

味噌は種類が多く, 種類によって基本技術もかなり異なるので, 原料・タイプ別に独自の原料処理, 製麹, 発酵・熟成などの基本技術について述べていただくことにした。まず, 味噌出荷総量の約80%を占める米味噌を取りあげるが, 今回は各地で多くつくられる赤色辛口米味噌の代表的銘柄, 越後味噌・仙台味噌について, 長年, 研究・現場両面に携わって来られたそれぞれの筆者に詳しく述べていただいた。
