This paper is intended to prove the utility of digital historical documents concerning George Washington and the Continental (Confederation) Congress in reconstructing several interesting aspects of Colonial and Revolutionary America. As a full-text search can be pursued effectively and quickly by utilizing digitized editions supplied by the websites of the Library of Congress, etc. which are accessible for free, we approach the theme above from three viewpoints: colonial manners, the “first” president of the U.S., and pocket watches of George Washington. In dealing with these subjects, we need to be conscious the whole structure of the historical materials we use, from an angle of “set” concept or nesting construction of documents. Several facts found are as follows. (1) By examining the digitized Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation written by George Washington himself, we find that he lays a stress on prohibitionary rules rather than recommendatory rules, especially talking about rules of conversation, resulting in our detecting interesting manner codes of the 18th century, some of which are still meaningful even today. (2) By investigating the digitized Journals of the Continental Congress which are the most fundamental documents on the Revolutionary era, we find that John Hanson of Maryland, so-called the “first” president of the U.S., cannot be identified even as the first president under the ratified Articles of Confederation nor as an identical president under the U.S. Constitution, inevitably. Moreover, it turns out that Founding Fathers uttered an important phrase, the “American Revolution” only six times in the Journals. (3) By using the full-text searching function equipped in the digitized Writings of George Washington form the Original Manuscript Sources compiled by J. Fitzpatrick, we reconstruct George Washington’s everyday life focusing on a word, “watch.” While showing the contemporary meanings of pocket watches and related items (seals, etc.) in the early modern Atlantic world, we dig into the deep structure of the Writings, and reveal the consumer world of Washington family, details of consignment system, and several customs concerning the transatlantic trade.

はじめに:手術後の肺塞栓症(pulmonary embolism:以下, PE)は致死率の高い重大な合併症であり, 塞栓子の多くは深部静脈血栓症(deep vein thrombosis:以下, DVT)に由来する.本邦では術後の発生率が低いために, 予防法に関しても広く普及しているとは言い難い.我々は独自のリスクスコアを用いてDVT・PEの術前リスク評価を行うとともに, 1998年12月より全手術症例に対してintermittent pneumatic compression(以下, IPC)による予防を行っている.方法:今回, IPC導入以前の1997年8月〜1998年11月までの全身麻酔下手術症例109例とIPC導入後の1998年12月〜2001年3月までの216例を対象としてDVT・PE発生率を比較した.結果:IPC非使用群では4例にDVT・PEの発生を認めたが(3.7%), IPC使用群216例では1例のみにPEの合併を認めた(0.5%, p=0.045).ロジスチック解析ではIPC使用によりDVT・PEのリスクが10分の1に減少した.IPC使用による副損傷は経験していない.術前リスクスコアが平均値もしくはそれ以下の2例でもDVT・PEの発生を認めており, 発症の予測は困難である.考察:IPCは簡便で有用な周術期DVT・PE予防措置であり, 全手術症例に対して施行する必要があると考える.

In the injection molded parts of glass fiber reinforced PP (PPG), the increase of fiber content to improve the mechanical properties, results in protruding the surface at weld-line region, where melt flows unite in at injection mold, and deteriorates the surface appearance.In this study, the optimum material design were discussed to improve both surface appearance quality and mechanical property of PPG.The weld-line protrusion height as the surface appearance quality and izod impact strength as the mechanical property were measured for PPG's with various fiber contents. The influences of fiber content, short-fiber/long-fiber ratio and flowability of matrix PP were discussed. It can be found that the low-flowability PP with a proper quantity of long fiber is effective for solving the weld-line protrusion without reducing the impact strength.

札幌医科大学保健医療学部教務委員会は、平成16年5月に、『大学が今後、組織的に学生にどんな支援ができるのか』を検討するための学生支援ワーキンググループを立ち上げた。検討に際し、学生の実態を知るために学生生活を『学業』、『経済』、『健康』面に分類し、全学生に対してアンケート調査を行い、今後の学生支援の方向性をさぐるための基礎データを得ることができた。その結果、1)専門科目への早期暴露の必要性、2)学業に関わる困難感を相談できる窓口の確保、3)奨学金や授業料減免制度などの受給機会を得やすくするシステムづくり、4)カウンセリング制度などの相談体制の周知徹底を図ること、などの課題が明らかとなった。さらに、アンケート調査から見えてきた学生の問題点について考察した。The committee of Educational Affairs of the School of Health Sciences established a Working Group for student support in May 2004 to determine what the school could do to support students systematically. The lifestyles of students categorized by educational, financial and health problems were investigated by a self-administered questionnaire survey. It was found that there was 1)a need for earlier exposure to advanced courses, 2)the establishment of a section for students to consult about academic problems, 3)the arrangement of a system making it easier to receive a scholarship or reduced tuition, and 4)the making sure the students are aware of counseling and consulting system. Some of the other issues of students are also discussed.

自己愛人格傾向がストレスに脆弱な素因であるかを検討するために,大学生174名(男性72名,女性102名)を対象として縦断的調査を行った。自己愛人格傾向の高い者は最近1ヶ月以内のストレッサー経験量が多いと精神的健康が低下するという仮説を立て,精神的健康のネガティブな側面をストレス反応,ポジティブな側面をハッピネスとして測定した。階層的重回帰分析の結果,自己愛人格傾向の高い者がストレスイベントを多く経験した場合,男性では抑うつ反応および自律神経系活動性亢進反応,女性では身体的疲労感が増加し,一方ストレスの少ない状況ではこれらのストレス反応が自己愛人格傾向の低い者や平均的な者に比べて最も少なかった。つまり,自己愛人格傾向には個人の精神的健康を部分的に支える働きがあるが,それはストレスの少ない状況に限定されたものであり,ストレスの多い状況ではストレス反応を生起しやすい,ストレスに脆弱な素因と考えられる。

身の回りには,顔に見えるものが多く存在する.もしそれらの顔が表情を変え,話をすることができたら,さらに楽しい発見や体験が行えるのではないだろうか.筆者らは,このような顔に見えるものとのインタラクションを目的とした作品「かおさがし」を提案し,新たに感情モデルと合成音声を加えたシステムを製作した.人形型デバイスで顔に見えるものを撮影し,人形の顔を触ったり,人形を揺らしたりすることによって,顔や音声がインタラクティブに変化する.このシステムによって,顔に見えるものとのインタラクションが可能となった.今後,携帯電話向けアプリケーションや玩具として応用することによって,新たなエンタテインメントを提案することができる. : There are a lot of face-like objects and materials. If those faces move, speak, and interact with us, it will be very amusing for many people, especially children. We therefore propose a system, which enables people to interact with those faces for entertainment. We have previously proposed a facial recognition system and a facial animation system to produce artwork which encourages people to interact with these face-like objects. We have newly updated the system, adding emotion modeling and synthetic voices. Users take a picture of a face-like thing with the doll-shaped device. Then, photograph take appearance in the face of the doll. When users touch the face of the doll or shake the body of the doll, the facial expression and the voice of the doll changes. We encourage people to interact with face-shaped objects for entertainment. We hope this system will be implemented in mobile gadgets such as mobile phones, and expect people, especially children, to use the gadget and play with faces in their environment.

The aim of this paper is to examine the background of the 2006 riots in Hungary. This paper is focused on the process of Hungary's accession to the European Union (EU) and the rise of nationalism. Hungarian socialist and liberal leaders promoted Hungary's joining of the EU. EU accession of Central and Eastern European countries means the 'return to Europe', which accepts democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights, protection of minorities and a market economy. After the regime change in 1989, they tried to restrain crude nationalism, which resulted from economic discontent and deteriorated relations with neighboring countries, where Hungarian minorities live. The Hungarian Government carried out economic reform to transform into a market economy, and put the public sector under private management. As a result, the reform brought about a high percentage of unemployment and a decrease in social security. Moreover, Hungary had to set its finances in order by cutting down expenses to adopt the Euro currency. Hungary's budget deficit is the biggest in the EU. The socialist Prime Minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany made a slip of the tongue in May 2006, which came to light in September. He said that the Government had lied "morning, noon and night" about the problems facing the country to win the general election in April. The opposition party leaders and angry Hungarian citizens got together in front of the Parliament building, and protested against Gyurcsany. They demanded him to resign as the Prime Minister. Riots broke out on 18 September and on 23 October, in which 800 police and rioters were injured. October 23 was the 50^<th> anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The riots were caused by far-right radicals, who were skeptical about European integration and hostile to the socialist and liberal leaders. In spite of joining the EU, Hungary is in a difficult situation. The author analyses why European integration caused the rise of nationalism. This paper consists of following sections: 1. Torsion of the vermiform appendix in a 2 1/3-year-old boy, who appears to be the youngest patient with this disease in the world literature, is reported. He had no previous history of abdominal pain. He began to complain of abdominal pain about 30 minites after standing on his hands for the first time in his life. Two days later, he was admitted to our hospital because of severe intermittent abdominal pain. Tenderness of his right lower abdomen associated with a WBC count of 23100/cmm and an enlarged appendix as seen in the ultrasonogram led us to perform a laparotomy under the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The vermiform appendix showed clockwise torsion of 360°at its root and a gangrenous appearance. There was no adhension of the appendix to the surrounding tissue, and so release of the torsion and an appendectomy were easily performed. No fecalith or inflammation of the appendix was observed. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. Although anatomical or pathological causes of torsion of the appendix are still unknown, STANDING ON HIS HANDS was suggested as an important etiological factor in this case.

門脈ガス血症(以下,本症と略記)は予後不良で緊急開腹術が必要と考えられてきたが,最近自然軽快する例の報告も多く,手術適応の判断が難しい.われわれの12例の経験と文献報告例から本症の手術適応につき考察した.方法:腸管壊死があり開腹術の適応であった5例(A群)と,腸管壊死が無く経過観察可能であった7例(B群)を比較した.結果:A群は全身状態不良で,5例全例に腹膜刺激徴候を認めた.B群では全身状態は良好で,2例を除き腹膜刺激徴候を認めなかった.A群では全例熱発を認めたがB群では4例で熱発を認めなかった.白血球数はA群5例,B群5例で10,000/mm^3以上であった。CRPは,不明例以外で,A群では4.3mg/dlと7.0mg/dlの2例のほか2例が20mg/dl以上であったがB群では全例20mg/dl以下でうち5例は1.1mg/dl以下であった.考察:本症の成因には,腸管壊死からの感染として,E.coliなどのガス産生菌が関与する場合と,非絞扼性腸閉塞の場合など,単に腸管内圧の上昇によって発生する場合があるが,後者の成因の場合は経過観察が可能と考えられる.手術適応は腸管壊死の有無にかかっているが,その判断は,全身状態,腹部所見,熱発の有無など,理学所見の正確な把握が重要で,一般の急性腹症の場合となんら変わるところはない.検査値としては白血球数よりもCRPが手術適応の参考になる.
