Michiaki Nagai, the only professor of gymnastics (now known as physical education) at Tokyo Higher Normal School, was the only person who maintained that the aim of kendo (swordsmanship) should be not simply to advance its techniques but to build up spiritual ability through swordsmanship practice, taking the place of gekiken, a part of kenjutsu (swordsmanship), which was hitting practice with a bamboo sword. He first suggested this idea at the first special school for swordsmanship instructors selected from middle schools across Japan, held by the Ministry of Education in 1911. The aim of this article is to clarify when Nagai decided to change the name from gekiken to kendo by researching all of his articles and books describing martial arts, including swordsmanship, published from 1909, when he returned from abroad study, to 1915, when he wrote the foreword for kendo, the first great reference book for instructors, written by S. Takano, the swordsmanship instructor of the School. It is concluded that because Nagai did not have any idea about the name for swordsmanship with a bamboo sword at the beginning of his research, he used gekiken as the subject name for the School. However, he decided to use kendo instead of gekiken in August 1910, when the School adopted kendo as the subject name. As soon as the Ministry adopted gekiken as the official term for the school subject in July 1911, he acted publicly to use kendo for the School, in spite of the decision of the Ministry.

Until about 1920, swordsmanship was known as kenjyutsu or gekiken (gekken). Now, however, it is well known as kendo. This article attempts to clarify the reasons why kendo took the place of kenjyutsu. As the Japanese Ministry of Education first adopted gekiken in 1911 as a field of gymnastics, the Ministry ran a special school for swordsmen selected from middle schools across the entire country. Such a move was necessary because most swordsmen were not qualified as school instructors. Fortunately, a book written by a participant who recorded the lectures from this special school remains. From the manuscript, it is clear that, despite the fact that swordsmanship which consisted of fencing with bamboo swords was renamed gekiken, the Ministry instructed that the aim of swordsmanship practice was not to advance its techniques, but to build up spiritual endurance. A lecturer at the school, Sasaburo Takano, the first swordsmanship instructor at the Tokyo Higher Normal School, did not comment about the naming of swordsmanship, because he used both the terms bujyutsu (martial arts including kenjyutsu) and budo (martial arts including kendo) to describe the relationship between practice and the aim of martial arts. However, it is very interesting that another lecturer at the school, Michiaki Nagai, who was the only professor of gymnastics, argued that because the characters geki and ken emphasised technique over spirituality, gekiken should not be used at all. Thus what he emphasised was not gekiken but kendo.

Adult urodele amphibians such as newts are capable of regenerating lost structures including their limbs. In these species, dedifferentiation of myofiber is essential for the regenerative process. Upon terminal differentiation, nuclei of myofiber (myonuclei) are withdrawn from cell cycle, but prior to dedifferentiation, myonuclei reenter the cell cycle. In contrast with urodele amphibians, it is generally accepted that mammalian myofibers are not able to dedifferentiate in response to muscle injury. A recent study has suggested that electroporation can induce dedifferentiation response of skeletal muscle in newt limbs. In the present study, we examined whether myonuclei of skeletal muscle of mammals are capable of reentering the cell cycle by means of electroporation. Electroporation was applied to tibialis anterior muscle of the rat with or without plasmid DNA. Histological analyses revealed that, while electroporation induces degenerative/regenerative responses in skeletal muscle irrespective of the presence of plasmid DNA, the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in myonuclei was observed only in the presence of plasmid DNA. The present results indicate that myonuclei of skeletal muscle are capable of reentering the cell cycle and suggest that in vivo electroporation can induce dedifferentiation of mammalian skeletal muscle.

Use of firocoxib in dogs for postoperative pain control has not been published in any of the journals in Japan. A field study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of firocoxib in dogs in controlling pain associated with soft tissue surgery in Japan. The study followed a negative control, double-blind, multicenter clinical efficacy study using a randomized block design. A total of 131 client-owned dogs presented to the clinical practices for soft tissue surgery were enrolled. Sixty-nine dogs were allocated to the firocoxib-treated group and received 5 mg/kg of firocoxib orally on Day 0 before the surgery and once daily through Day 2, while 62 dogs were allocated to the non-treated group handled in a similar manner only without the firocoxib administration. Pain assessment took place on Day 0 before the surgery through Day 2. The primary efficacy variable was a success/failure variable based on whether the dog needed rescue medication (based on pain assessment after the surgery or Investigator’s judgment) and a significant difference between firocoxib-treated group (16.4%) and non-treated group (50.0%) (P=0.0031) was observed. There was no adverse event during the study that was considered to be related to the administration of firocoxib. This study indicated the clinical efficacy and safety profile of firocoxib administered to control pain associated with soft tissue surgery under field condition.

軽油および複合燃料によるディーゼル噴霧の着火おくれを定容燃焼器を用いて測定した。この際、着火おくれは発火おくれとし、これをフォト・トランジスタにより検出した。測定結果をアレニウス表示したところ、高温側と低温側に分かれた2本の直線になることがわかった。またエタノール混合軽油で約50%以下、水-軽油エマルジョンで約40%以下の混合割合であれば、着火おくれは軽油の場合と大差のないことがわかった。

要約国際共同研究としての次世代インターネットテストベッドプロジェクト間の相互接続を目的として、1999年G8-GIBNプロジェクトと共同で行ったAUP(利用規約)に関する調査研究をもとに、研究開発用ギガビットネットワーク、郵政省通信総合研究所APIIテストベッド、APAN、AIII、WIDE等の国際インターネットテストベッドとの相互接続を行って行く過程でインターネットレイヤモデルにおける社会的側面を加えた新規モデル提案の必要性を検討した。調査の結果、現在の1)ネットウークの目的、2)技術的基盤に関する情報、3)ユーザへの課金の有無を含む接続の際の要求事項、4)帯域割り当てや各種トラフィックの取扱いなどの規則、5)ネットワークのモニター方法、6)バックアップシステムなどに関しての周知の必要性、プロジェクト範囲についての定義が明瞭でない等の問題が示唆され、従来のネットワークレイヤモデルにポリシーを加えた新規層構造を検討した。

Surface breakdown phenomenon of printed wiring board was investigated with increasing temperature from 23℃ to 150℃. The experiment was carried out by dc pulse voltage with the frequencies in the range of 50Hz to 150Hz. Printed wiring boards of epoxy resin laminate have been employed to investigate the effects of the surface temperature, electrode distance and the frequencies of applied voltage on the discharge quantity. The study revealed that the time to breakdown decreases with increasing the temperature, increasing the frequency of applied voltage and decreasing the electrode distance. The characteristics of discharge currents with increased temperature and the electrode distance were discussed by power spectral density of discharge current. The results show that the power spectral density of discharge currents increases with increasing the temperature, and decreasing the electrode distance.
