農林水産研究情報総合センターにおける1984年から今日に至る文献検索サービスについて概説する。まず,2000年より提供を開始した横断検索サービスAGSEARCH構築の経緯とこの運用で得られた課題を整理する。さらにこれらの課題を受け,内外で保有する各種の文献データベースを包括的に検索し,既存製品であるMetaLib,X-ServerおよびオープンソースソフトウェアXerxesを組み合わせて開発した統合検索サービス,Database Quick Searchの導入と現状の運用について紹介する。また,今後は,より多くのデータベースを利用可能にして情報源を広げるか,あるいは「入手」「所在確認」を重視し利用者を情報源に確実にナビゲートできる機能を強化するか,利用者の探索行動を分析・把握しつつ検討したい。

Nursing is an emerging profession trying to fulfill the criteria that define a true profession. The professional work of nursing is approached in a scientific manner. The nursing process is defined as an intellectual activity meant to be approached regularly and systematically now that the nursing process is the accepted method of professional practice. However, the nursing process is not the only capability required of nurses. The nursing process is nothing more than a problem-solving process by which nurses meet patients' needs. The patient's set of problems, referred to as the "nursing diagnosis," is undergoing international standardization. To standardize is to risk overshadowing the care that originally motivated the more scientific approach to solving patients' problem. Still more, with the increased complexity of medical care, nurses have taken over more and more of the activities associated with medical practice. Consequently, in the actual reality of practice, nurses sometimes lose sight of caring. What is the primary expertise to which nursing lays claim? So far, nurses have always valued the idea of caring for persons. Has nursing abandoned its caring role? Caring means that persons, the subjects of nursing care, are treated not as objects or impersonally but always in a way that considers the essence of the person, i. e., the opposite of mechanization and depersonalization. Also, what patients want and need most from nurses has been and still remains quality, humanized care. Therefore, nurses are challenged to enhance and develop the caring tradition of nursing as expressed through the nursing process.

Calculations of STI for several modeled sound fields show that the values of STI for the field consist of direct sound and single reflection, which is higher or lower by a dB than the former, are same, the sound reflections at any delay time raise up the value of STI and even the high level early sound reduces the value of STI under certain condition. The early sound energy might be useful for high speech intelligibility, whereas the concept of STI contradicts with that. There are problems to consider STI to be an adequate measure of speech intelligibility.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in degeneration of the matrix associated with bone and cartilage. Regulation of osteoclast activity is essential in the treatment of bone disease, including osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Polyphenols in green tea, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), inhibit MMPs expression and activity. However, the effects of the black tea polyphenol, theaflavin-3,3′-digallate (TFDG), on osteoclast and MMP activity are unknown. Therefore, we examined whether TFDG and EGCG affect MMP activity and osteoclast formation and differentiation in vitro. TFDG or EGCG (10 and 100 μM) was added to cultures of rat osteoclast precursors cells and mature osteoclasts. Numbers of multinucleated osteoclasts and actin rings decreased in polyphenol-treated cultures relative to control cultures. MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities were lower in TFDG- and EGCG-treated rat osteoclast precursor cells than in control cultures. MMP-9 mRNA levels declined significantly in TFDG-treated osteoclasts in comparison to control osteoclasts. TFDG and EGCG inhibited the formation and differentiation of osteoclasts via inhibition of MMPs. TFDG may suppress actin ring formation more effectively than EGCG. Thus, TFDG and EGCG may be suitable agents or lead compounds for the treatment of bone resorption diseases.

日本とドイツの高校1年生を対象に、アンケート調査を実施した。調査の内容は、人生の意味に対する理解、科学的概念の理解と自分と周りの関係の理解についてである。結果から、日本の高校生はドイツと比べて、人生の意味に対する意識が希薄で、科学的知識や自分自身のとらえ方が単純であることが分かった。

The blacksmithing of Carigara, Leyte, are famous for a knife known for its attractive sheath of ornately carved-wood made from hard wood and carabao horn. But those regular distribution heavily concentrated within the environs of Leyte where agricultural of rice and production of copra are major livelihood. This study describes the crucial social-economic relationship among blacksmiths, financiers and traders, and how blacksmithing continues to flourish as a small-scale cottage industry without sufficient operational capital fund.
