In a real-time system, it is required to reduce the response time to an interrupt signal, as well as the execution time of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). In order to satisfy this requirement, we have proposed a method of implementing some of the functionalities of an RTOS using hardware. Based on this idea, we have implemented a VLSI chip, called STRON (silicon TRON: The Realtime Operating system Nucleus), to enhance the performance of an RTOS, where the STRON chip works as a peripheral unit of any MPU. In this paper we describe the hardware architecture of the STRON chip and the performance evaluation results of the RTOS using the STRON chip. The following results were obtained. (1) The STRON chip is implemented in only about 10,000 gates when the number of each object (task, event flag, semaphore, and interrupt) is 7. (2) The task scheduler can execute within 8 clocks in a fixed period using the hardware algorithm when the number of tasks is 7. (3) Most of the basic μITRON system calls using the STRON chip can be executed in a fixed period of a few microseconds. (4) The execution time of a system call, measured by a multitask application program model, can be reduced to about one-fifth that in the case of the conventional software RTOS. (5) The total performance, including context switching, is about 2.2 times faster than that of the software RTOS. We conclude that the execution time of the part of the system call implemented by the STRON chip can almost be ignored, but the part of the interface software and context switching related to the architecture of a MPU strongly influence the total performance of an RTOS.

C. E. Shannon formalized the concept of "the amount of information" and presented its formula H=-&Sigma;^n_<i=1> p_i log p_i in 1940s, mainly in his paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication". His way of study had two progressive characteristics. Firstly, Shannon applied probability theory into his measure of information, which is more mathematically abstract and fruitful than those formalized by his precedent engineers, H.Nyquist and R.V.L.Hartley. By Shannon's expression it has been possible to measure "redundancy" and even "equivocation" which is the amount of lost information on the channel by using Bayesian probability. Secondly, Shannon regarded the discrete channel as the fundamental case and the continuous channel as its application, in spite of the fact that a continuous type was usually dealt as a basis at that time. In this point, his study of the cryptography affected his communication theory. In 1940s Shannon conducted researches on the communication theory as well as the cryptography simultaneously. Indeed "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" (1948) and his unpublished paper "The Mathematical Theory of Cryptography" (1945) have a lot of similar descriptions about the amount of information. Namely, Shannon's concept of information was influenced by both the preceding results on the communication theory and his own research on the cryptography. Boltzman's H formula seems to bear a close resemblance to Shannon's one, but any descriptions showing some direct relations between them have not been found.

This article examines how the intergroup relations research, within a traditional group research area in social psychology, are located in the framework of the communication studies. First, the intergroup relations studies are briefly described, then a model to classify the communication phenomena is presented. Finally, the article discusses the classification of the intergroup relations studies according to the model.

Grokster case was decided in June, 2005. Before this case, at Boalt Hall, Berkeley, School of Law, there were two arguments over the prevention of the direct and indirect infringement of copyright. One is argued by Professor Pamela Samuelson who proposes the solution by Congress. The other is Professor Peter Menell who proposes the solution by Judiciary. They think Sony Beta case differently, which was decided in 1985. In face of this battle, the Supreme Court took the middle approach and clarified what indirect infringement is. Although this case is going to be analyzed by other distinguished scholars, it is important to say that the American scholars recognize that this P2P issue includes interpretation issue of Constitutional law. However, unlike the U.S., there are not so many arguments in Japan that discuss Constitutional law issue about P2P. In this article, I like to discuss this issue focusing on the interpretation and the battle between Congress and Judicial approach. The main point is that P2P issue includes the First Amendment rights of the technology inventor, the sender of the information and the copyright holder. Unless the explanation how to solve the P2P by the government, the balance of these three shall not be kept.

北海道の中新統から産出したアクキガイ科の腹足類, Nucellaの保存の良い標本はN. tokudai (Yokoyama)とN. freycineti saitoi Hatai et Kotakaに同定される。N. tokudaiは中新世前期にカリフォルニアに出現し, 中期中新世初期までに, 西方へ日本およびカムチャッカに分布を広げた。N. freycineti saitoiは中新世中期に日本に出現し, 本亜種から中新世末期または鮮新世前期に現生のN. freycineti (Deshayes)が進化した。初期の地理的分布や初期のすべての種に小歯をともなう厚い外唇が見られることから, Nucella属は北東太平洋の温暖水起源であることが推定される。北米西岸の温暖水に起源をもち, その後東アジアに分散したNucellaの分布の変遷は, 北太平洋の温帯浅海域の他の多くの貝類やフジツボの分布の変遷史に類似している。
