In this paper I read the text of Confucian Analects from the viewpoint of “learning”. Here, “learning” means the process of understanding something which causes the transformation of the self who understands something. If the process of logical calculation proceeds with the transformation of the self who performs this logical calculation, it is learning. This self-referential dynamical process is the core of the theoretical structure of Confucian Analects.This paper is organized as follows; at first I discuss the concept of knowing (知) and describe the structure of learning in detail. I show that the famous Menoʼs paradox in Platoʼs Meno was solved by Confucius before the birth of Plato.From this perspective, I redefine the major concepts of this text such as 忠(zhong), 信(xin), 恕(shu), 禮(li), 和(he), 同(tong), 君子(junzi), 小人(xiaoren), 仁(ren), etc. Knowing oneʼs own true feeling is the most important thing for a man of virtue. I also discuss a book by Herbert Fingarette on Confucius. In the final section I indicate the similarity between the thoughts of Confucius and M.K. Gandhi.

Ninety-five undergraduates belonging to four different hobby groups took two different types of attitudinal assessment measures towards "Otaku" concept ; an implicit measure recently developed by Mori (2006) and two explicit measures developed by Kikuchi (2000). The results showed that these three measures were inter correlated and the implicit measure failed to discriminate the four groups, but most Otaku-cultured group showed a slight positive attitude towards Otaku-concepts. Being Otaku was once strongly associated with negative image among the Japanese students. However, the present results showed the Otaku image has become neutral in both implicit and explicit measures.

This paper uses the viewpoint of a teacher’s past experience to reveal the mechanism that relates to a teacher’s subjective feelings when coaching extracurricular club activities. Currently in Japan, there is much discussion of work-type reforms regarding the way teachers work in public and at academic levels. Various investigations show the situation of teachers in contemporary Japanese society as one of excessive overwork. In particular, for junior high school teachers, the temporal and psychological burden of monitoring club activities has been regarded as a problem. Although previous studies have pointed out problems due to extracurricular club activities, the problem of a teacher’s subjective feelings – over-reacting, acting out, or passionately involved – has not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, in this paper, we examine the mechanism by which teachers experience subjectively the coaching of extracurricular club activities. The results of this paper are as follows. Firstly, the temporal burden of coaching of extracurricular club activities falls hard on younger teachers. However, in all tasks, including club activities, young teachers express a desire for increased work, making it appear s though they were inviting themselves to be busier. Secondly, from the viewpoint of subjective enjoyment experienced from recalled participation their own junior high school and high school club activities, young teachers who found enjoyment from participating in current school club activities were those who had evaluated their own past club experiences positively, so tended to contribute a longer time to overseeing these activities as teachers. However, those teachers who recall their past club activities as not having been so enjoyable do not find the current participation in club activities as teachers so positively. Yet due that fact that they are young teachers, they are forced to instruct a club activity for a long time. Thirdly, there are many young teachers who have been involved in the same club activities consistently from their own junior high school years up through the present time; they derive pleasure from coaching the club activities so their time commitment for coaching is longer. At the same time among young teachers, there are many who do not enjoy being in charge of club activities they have themselves not experienced previously and dislike being forced to commit a long time for such guidance. In this paper, we have analyzed the issue of teachers’ subjective feelings regarding responsibilities toward club activities and point out the necessity to set up opportunities during the pre-service teacher training stage for each pre-service teacher to express his/her own experience of past club activities.

小笠原諸島では、固有昆虫を保護するべく、粘着トラップを主としたグリーンアノールの駆除事業が進んでいる。しかし小笠原に生息する集団の基本的な生態はあまり調べられておらず、捕獲の効率化の検討に資する生態学的知見は少ない。本研究では、グリーンアノールの利用する止まり木に着目し、父島と母島の集団間あるいは雌雄間で、利用する微小環境を定量的に比較した。その結果、両島ともに雌雄差がみられ、雌の方が細い枝や根が混み合った微小環境を利用していることがわかった。このことから、効率的に雌を捕獲するには、樹幹や太い枝だけではなく、雌が好むような微小環境にもトラップを設置することが有効と考えられる。

This study examines the reasons why many elementary school children love"Pocket Monster" (Pokemon). Pokemon is a sum of monster characters and is the most popular character among children these days. Children can get these monsters and put them into small balls in the Pokemon game. They can acquire, collect, and grow them in the game. In the study, elementary school children completed a questionnaire asking them to identify their favorite characters and to write the reasons they liked them. The data were analyzed by focusing on those who liked Pokemon, and the differences depending on sex and age were analyzed. As a result, many children selected their favorite characters from a large number of Pokemon characters according to their traits and special abilities or the children's impressions about Pokemon, such as "cool", "strong" and "cute." Especially, many boys in lower and middle grades liked Pokemon because the characters have strong power. Moreover, Pokemon was liked by children because the characters are not only strong, but also cute. These results show that Pokemon can support children's dependence and independence by relating to their aggressiveness and tendency to be dependent.
