Waiting is an inevitable part of life and the spaces in which we wait can contribute to either improve or worsen the experience. This paper covers the process and results of “The waiting room”, analyzing if the presence of specific smells has a significant impact in how the room and the waiting experience are perceived. Two different odorants were selected, lavender (relaxing) and orange (stimulating); 63 participants from 32 different countries were assigned into three groups (between-groups approach): Control (unscented), Orange and Lavender. Results show that both scents affected the room and waiting experience evaluation in different ways and overall increased the surrounding space perception compared to the unscented condition. Participants exposed to lavender scent were inclined to rate higher the ‘psychological’ properties of the room such as pleasantness and warmth; in addition the lavender-evoked memories were emotion based. Participants exposed to orange scent tended to rate higher the ‘physical’ properties of the room such as brightness and height; orange-evoked memories were object based. Lavender scent had a stronger influence in space perception than orange, suggesting the relevance of congruence and coherence between scent and physical environment when incorporating it as a tangible design tool in architecture.

This paper builds on the methodology of CMS(critical management studies), while using the analytical framework of H.A.Simon's modern organization theory. It specifically investigates the case of crush accident on the pedestrian bridge at the fireworks event in Akashi City 2001 on secondary materials such as news articles about judgments in the court. It analyses how various organizations like the city administrators, police and security company were related to cross-organizational decision-making on restricting/unrestricting flows of pedestrians to avoid the accident. A structural gap of responsibility in organizational decision-making process can be reviled as well as systematic oppression that modern organizations inevitably include, such as inhibition of the autonomous decisions of individuals, which 'value-neutral' management theory could not make explicit.

チョウセンブナMacropodus ocellatusの繁殖生態について,屋外および飼育室における飼育試験によって調査した。産卵は,屋外,飼育室内のいずれにおいても,雌に対して雄1尾を投入した飼育容器内のみで観察された。雌は同一容器に複数尾を投入しても問題なく産卵に至った。確認された産卵数は,78-324粒であった。産卵周期を観察するため,飼育室内で産卵した雌雄の2組を飼育し続けたが,産卵後の雄は雌を激しく攻撃し,再び産卵行動をとることはなかった。受精卵は産卵後約2日で孵化し,孵化後6日目で摂餌を開始した。孵化直後の仔魚は強い浮力を有し,浮遊物の付近や飼育容器の壁面沿いに塊をなして浮遊していた。孵化直後の遊泳力は皆無であり,能動的な遊泳が観察されたのは孵化後5日目であった。

近年, 朝鮮半島の国々は国連地名標準化会議などの席上で,「日本海」の名は旧日本による植民地政策の遺産だという理由で, その改称を要求している。この問題に関連して調べた結果を報告する。まず, 日本海を含む総計11の縁海の命名法を分類し,「日本海」という名が, この海が縁海として存立するために不可欠な, 母大洋たる太平洋から縁海の日本海を隔離している主要列島弧の名に因んでいて地理学的にも妥当なことを指摘する。次に, 調べた日本語事典7編はすべてKrusensternをもって「日本海」の名の初記載者と誤認していた背景に触れる。最後に, 西洋製, 日本製いずれの地図でも「日本海」の名が1800年頃から慣用され, 明治維新頃に定着するに至った経過を, 地図一覧・地図資料 (青山, 1997) と古海流図 (1837〜1887) を併用し, 1/3世紀別の地図出現回数の変遷により確認する。日本による半島の植民地支配の罪過は重く大きいが,「日本海」の名の地図における慣用・定着はこれとは無関係のことである。

星野リゾートが軽井沢で運営する「村民食堂」ではいつものように閉店時間が近づいていた。この店の責任者である大串桂史は、お客の大半が帰った店内を見ながら、「今日も一日が終わるな」と心地よい疲れを感じ始めていた。 村民食堂は2002年にオープンした飲食店である。メニューは昼が定食中心で、夜は居酒屋になる。
