Mr. Kakizaki Hisashi (1902-84), famous for his many technical innovations and his acquisition of many patents for machines making silk fabrics, was dispatched to Iran by the United Nations as a technical guidance expert. In 1963, when he played an active part in Gilan Province, he had the opportunity to witness clandestine digging at Sirkuh, a village situated at the foot of Dalfak mountain (Kuh-e Dalfak) on the east bank of the Sefidrud river (Sefid rud).As is well known in connection with “Amlash objects”, many precious objects of cultural heritage, found in the vicinity by clandestine digging, had flowed abroad from Iran at that time. According to the Kakizaki's inquiries, pot-hunters dug so many ancient graves at great speed that they changed radically the form of geographical features.His field notes with pictures contain not only the archaeological objects but also his detailed observation of the character of the ancient structures where the objects were discovered in situ. And Kakizaki's report about stratigraphical character observed on the section of ancient graves are comparable with the results from our general survey. His sharp observation seems to have been based on an innate ability to understand what he saw. Moreover, scientific archaeological investigation which started at that time in this area would have reminded him of how ruins were investigated earlier in Japan.Regretfully, clandestine digging of ancient sites is still one of the serious social problems in Iran today. Also, various community developments are obliterating many ancient ruins which are relatively inconspicuous, one after another. The damage to the cultural heritage of Iran which Kakizaki wrote down in his note is not a past occurrence but a serious contemporary phenomenon.

長時間作用型局所麻酔薬による難治性の心毒性に対しては,有効な治療法がないとされてきた.脂肪乳剤がブピバカインによる心停止からの蘇生に有効であることが動物実験で示されて以来,臨床症例においてもその有用性が示されつつある.海外のガイドラインにおいては,“20%イントラリピッド1.5ml/kg bolus投与後,0.25ml/kg/minで持続投与”が治療法として推奨されている.局所麻酔薬中毒に対して使用した脂肪乳剤による副作用は報告されていないが,多量の向精神薬による意識障害,心停止に対して使用した症例で,呼吸器系合併症が生じたことが報告されており,その使用に際しては注意を要する.

Despite its extreme importance and decades of efforts, practical short-term earthquake prediction still remains to be achieved in future. However, the electromagnetic research has been demonstrating some promises. This paper briefly reviews the recent progress of what we call “seismo-electromagnetics”, mainly referring to Japanese studies by the observational point of view. We demonstrate some results of observations, in varied frequency ranges, on the anomalous telluric current, ULF geomagnetic transient change, VLF-HF natural emissions and anomalous transmission of VLF and VHF band radio waves. We also summarize proposed physical mechanisms of these phenomena, including the notion called “Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere (LAI) Coupling”. We believe that electromagnetic studies will play an important role in not only earthquake prediction but also in understanding physical processes of earthquake generation.

過敏性腸症候群(Irritable Bowel Syndrome:IBS)は脳腸相関が深く関与する疾患の代表である.致死的な疾患ではないが,患者のQOLに及ぼす影響は大きく,より有効な薬剤の開発が望まれている.その発症メカニズムは複雑であり,消化管機能異常の発現する部位や発現パターンに依存して下痢型,便秘型およびその交替型に分類され,特に便秘型IBSの便通異常に関する病態モデルがないなど,創薬にとっては難しい疾患の一つでもある.一方,下痢型IBSに関しては,臨床予測性の高い便通異常および痛覚過敏に関する病態モデルが複数存在している.現在,制限付きではあるが,米国でセロトニン5-HT3受容体拮抗薬が下痢型IBS治療薬として上市され,我が国においても5-HT3受容体拮抗薬の上市は間近である.さらに,腸管神経叢における情報伝達機構が明らかになるにつれ,新たな神経伝達物質をターゲットとした創薬研究も行われており,今後の展開が注目される.

Lady Gaga's fourth CD album ARTPOP, designed by American pop artist Jeff Koons, adopted one of my illusion works, namely, Hatpin urchin, as the main inside design. This occurrence was significant for the study of visual illusion in the following three senses: first, it drew people's attention to visual illusion; second, the chosen illusion was novel; and third, for the first time in its history, visual illusion was recognized as ubiquitous.

We report herein five cases of symptomatic brainstem cavernous malformations (CM). Specific surgical approaches were designed to directly access each lesion. Neuronavigation and intraoperative monitoring were used. Four lesions underwent gross total resection, and one was subtotally partially removed. None of the patients developed new neurological deficits and all cases showed an improvement based on the modified Rankin Scale and the Karnofsky Performance Status. Although brainstem CM have a relatively high rate of re-bleeding, thus adversely affecting the neurological status of the patient, recent reports have demonstrated favorable outcomes after their resection. Hence, surgical removal can be recommended for cases of symptomatic brainstem CM, particularly those with re-bleeding. An optimal surgical approach, providing direct access to the lesion, is critical for successfully resecting brainstem CM.

2000年9月に北海道西部にある石狩用水系の一支流において,在来種のアメマスと1980年代後半に移入されたとされる欧州原産のブラウントラウトの生息状況を調べた。フラウントラウトはこの支流の優古種となっており,その推定生息尾数はアメマスの1.8倍で,特に支流の中下流域で卓越していた。これに対しアメマスは上流域のみで優古していた。夏から秋の河川水温は,支流の下流部で5~16℃であった。この支流の中下流域では,15年以内でアメマスが移入されたブラウントラウトに置き換わったと考えられた。
