In his social theory, Arthur W. Frank explained that the body is often consideredproblematic in terms of its “functionality” (or “system”). However, considering itproblematic in terms of “actions” is more in line with a phenomenological approach,rather than a functional approach. The concept of the “communicative body”, in particular, is applicable to the case ofmany sick people who wish to communicate with others face-to-face: both verbally andnon-verbally. I observed communication in a few self-help groups. However, Frank, whoonly argued that the telling of “quest stories” is an ethical practice of the “communicativebody”, did not clarify the ambivalence between various illness narratives and the body. I observed as a group individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease who wished tobe rehabilitated, and prepared a short ethnography of their group. In the participants’communication, their language as well as their bodies constructed their illnessnarratives, which were characterized by hard-working protagonists or their handicappedbodies. However, the relationship between an illness narrative and the body is notsimple. On the one hand, their bodies sustain their illness narratives that give them hope;on the other, their condition deteriorates and they feel that they are “getting worse”. The “body” is a very important element in the study of illness narratives; it sustains orhinders the construction of the narratives. Therefore, the “communicative body” is notan “idealized” one. The concept is applicable while observing the relationship betweenvarious illness narratives and the body, and considering how the body develops and failsin its style of usage when it suffers from a debilitating illness.

4名の失語症者に対し非言語的表現の訓練として絵を主体にした葉書(以下「絵手紙」)を描くことを指導した.4症例は非麻痺側の手を使い,十分に絵手紙を習得し,表出意欲の亢進と自発性の向上を認めた.郵送された絵手紙を受け取った患者の家族や友人等の喜びの反応が,患者の自信を増大させ,QOLを向上させたと思われた.今回の経験により,絵手紙の指導は失語症者の訓練法の一つとして有効に利用できると考えられた.

Taizo Masaki is most prominently mentioned in “Yoshida Torajiro”, a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson. After the Meiji Restoration, he was dispatched to Great Britain twice from 1871 to 1881, and became the first president of Tokyo Shokko Gakko (now Tokyo Institute of Technology). He worked earnestly for industrial education for nearly twenty years in the early years of Meiji Era. In 1890, Masaki was transferred to the Foreign Office, and went to Honolulu as consul in Hawaii. After one year, he was promoted to consul general. He stayed in Honolulu for 2 years and a half, however, his activities in Hawaii were not made clear yet. In this article, various kinds of documents between Japanese Foreign Office and Consul Masaki were studied, and the present writers tried to learn from them how he acted as Hawaiian consul.The diplomatic relation between Japan and Hawaii Kingdom began in 1860. It continued only 40 years, because of the Hawaiian revolution in 1893 and the annexation by the U.S.A. The largest pending problem of both countries was the immigration for the sugar beet farms from Japan. As sugar was the main product of Hawaii, the sugar beet farms needed a large number of workers. On the other hand, Japanese agricultural villages were in a long depression after the Meiji Restoration. After short preliminary negotiations, both governments arrived at an agreement that Japan would supply round numbers of immigrants for Hawaiian sugar farms periodically. In 1884, the Japanese consulate was opened at Honolulu, and the first ship “the City of Tokyo” carried 948 emigrants to Hawaii in 1885. This emigration organized by the Japanese government continued for ten years, and 29, 139 Japanese emigrants voyaged to Hawaii as often as 26 times. As the government-sponsored emigration brought about many conflicts, various kinds of troubles occurred.Taizo Masaki made a voyage to Honolulu as the fourth consul in May, 1890. It was the peak period of governmental emigration, and more than twelve thousand emigrants voyaged.There are many documents, and correspondance archives referring to Hawaii in the Diplomatic Record Office. We can infer the activities of Taizo Masaki in Hawaii as consul. The most important business of the Hawaiian consulate was the remittance of immigrants to their family in Japan. Because there was no branch of a Japanese bank in those early years, it was very difficult. Masaki invited a new branch of Yokohama Shokin Bank to Honolulu for Japanese immigrants. The remittance to Japan became easier.Masaki sent many formal annd informal reports which included important information. One of them referred to the suffrage of immigrants. The Hawaiian constitution amended in 1887, approved the right to vote of those other than American or European immigrants. Masaki gave a report on the historical situation and pointed out those problems. The other important reports were referring to the political change of the Hawaiian Government. In those days, the political situation in Hawaii was very unstable; therefore, coups d'état and reorganizations of the cabinet were done frequently. Masaki's reports described the circumstances of the changes of Hawaiian government and his opinions about them. His final report was dated Nov. 9, 1892, because he returned to Japan in December. It was only one month before the Hawaiian Kingdom collapsed and transferred to the republic form of government.The analysis in this article is not enough; a more detailed examination will be reported in the following articles. The other documents of Taizo Masaki referring to many other items will be introduced, too.In the meantime, Robert Louis Stevenson was making a tour of the islands in the Pacific Ocean, and visited Hawaii at least twice. We have much interest in the question whether the two old friends could meet again or not.

Stillbirth and abortion can be induced in hamsters at a high frequency by peripheral intracardiac inoculation with Japanese encephalitis virus. In the present experiment hamsters were conferred with immunity of varying degrees beforehand to examine the relationship between the degree of immunity and the frequency of occurrence of stillbirth and abortion. The results obtained are summarized as follows.1. Hamsters immunized with live virus. (1) When inoculated with live virus, all the animals produced such a high titer of hemagglutination-inhibition antibody as 1:160-1:320. (2) In the immunized group, no animals (0/9) were involved in stillbirth or abortion when challenged by virus inoculation. The average number of young per litter was 8.6 In the unimmunized control group, stillborn and aborted young were seen in all the animals (9/9). The average number of young, including stillborn and aborted ones, per litter was 2.8.2. Hamsters immunized with inactivated virus. (1) When three different concentrations of vaccine, high, moderate, and low, were used for immunization, antibody was produced positively in 12/12, 11/16, and 1/14 animals of the three groups, respectively. (2) The rate of occurrence of fetal infection by challenge inoculation was 0% (0/8), 55.6 (5/9), 100% (6/6), and 100% (6/6) in these three immunized groups and the control group, respectively.3. Relationship between antibody titer and obstetrical disorders. Throughout the present experiment the rate of occurrence of stillbirth and abortion or fetal infection was 0% (0/11) in animals in which the neutralizing antibody titer (the rate of reduction of plaques formed in 1:20 dilution of serum) before challenge inoculation was more than 77, 50% (1/2) in animals in which the titer was 55, and 100% (10/10) in animals in which the titer was less than 47.These results made it clear that no fetal infection could be established in an animal which had antibody in the blood to some extent.

Developments in the assessment of general and maladaptive personality traits in children and adolescents have been reviewed in the present paper, with an emphasis on instruments based on the Five-Factor Model (FFM), such as the Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children (HiPIC; Mervielde & De Fruyt, 1999), which describes general traits, and the Dimensional Personality Symptom Item Pool (DIPSI; De Clercq, De Fruyt, Van Leeuwen, & Mervielde, 2006), which accounts for maladaptive traits. We have additionally discussed measures available in Japanese, to assess traits in children, adolescents, and adults, and pertaining issues in cross-cultural personality research, especially with respect to Western and Asian differences. Finally, a number of key implementation areas for personality assessment have been identified, together with some challenges for this promising field of research.

高周波領域非可聴音を含む音楽の刺激で若中年者と健常高齢者にハイパーソニック・エフェクトが発現するか,PET (Positron Emission Tomography)による脳イメージング,脳波(Electroencephalogram:EEG)計測を用いて検証した.対象は平均年齢36.8 歳SD±7.7 歳(27 歳~48 歳),男性3 名,女性5 名,合計8名の若中年者健常ボランティアと平均年齢 77.6 歳SD±4.1 歳(72 歳~88 歳),男性5 名,女性10 名,合計15 名の健常高齢者である.高周波領域非可聴音刺激は脳幹を刺激し,後頭葉のα波を増大させたことから,ハイパーソニック・エフェクトは若年者だけてなく高齢者においても発現することが分かった.

Oral tolerance is a phenomenon of induction of systemic unresponsiveness to antigens ingested by the oral route and loss of immune response. Studies have shown the importance of vitamin A in oral tolerance in vitro but not in an in vivo experimental model. Therefore, we carried out experiments to determine how vitamin A deficiency affects tolerance induction and the ability of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) CD11c+ cells to induce regulatory T cells (Tregs). Immunological tolerance was induced by oral ovalbumin (OVA) administration in vitamin A-sufficient mice. OVA-specific antibody and cytokine production were significantly reduced. On the other hand, in vitamin A-deficient mice, both OVA-specific antibody and cytokine production were not suppressed by oral OVA administration. Regarding induction of Tregs, the conversion rate of Foxp3+ cells from naïve CD4+ cell by CD11c+ cells was decreased in vitamin A-deficient mice. Our study indicates that vitamin A deficiency causes the breakdown of oral tolerance in vivo.

1959 (昭和34) 年の「大坂城総合学術調査」において, 現大阪城が豊臣秀吉創建のものではなく, すべて江戸時代初期の徳川幕府による築造であることが判明した. またこの調査により, 本丸天守台南側で地下深く埋れた石垣が発見された. その後, ガスや水道の埋設管敷設に係わる調査において, いくつかの地下石垣が発見された. 特に, 1984 (昭和59) 年に行われた大手前配水池南側の調査において, 大規模な石垣垣の隅角部が発見された. これらの地下石垣は地上の石垣とは規模も積み方も異なり, 豊臣時代の大坂城ではないかと考えられている. 本研究では, 筆者らが提示している数値評価法を用いて, この地下石垣の特徴について考察するとともに, 石垣構築の技術的な面から構築年を推定した.

The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is a thermal neutron reactor with graphite moderation and operates on the thorium-uranium fuel cycle. The feature of the MSR is that fuel salt flows inside the reactor during the nuclear fission reaction. In the previous study, the authors developed numerical model with which to simulate the effects of fuel salt flow on the reactor characteristics. In this study, we apply the model to the steady-state analysis of a small MSR system and estimate the effects of fuel flow. The model consists of two-group neutron diffusion equations for fast and thermal neutron fluxes, transport equations for six-group delayed neutron precursors and energy conservation equations for fuel salt and the graphite moderator. The following results are obtained: (1) in the rated operation condition, the peaks of the neutron fluxes slightly move toward the bottom from the center of the reactor and the delayed neutron precursors are significantly carried by the fuel salt flow, and (2) the extension of residence time in the external-loop system and the rise of the fuel inflow temperature show weak negative reactivity effects, which decrease the neutron multiplication factor of the small MSR system.

We report the first example of a Ni0 precursor that provides a contamination-free (<1%) nickel film by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using N2 as the carrier gas. The structure and physical properties of the Ni0 precursor and subsequent film are described.

Aim: Previous epidemiological studies demonstrated that the ratio of n-6 to n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is associated with cardiovascular diseases. We herein investigated whether the beneficial effect of highly purified eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) on arterial stiffness is associated with changes in the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as EPA, docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid(DGLA), relative to arachidonic acid(AA), in obese Japanese patients with dyslipidemia. Methods: The EPA/AA, DHA/AA and DGLA/AA ratios were compared between obese patients with(n=94) and without (n=31) dyslipidemia. Among the former group, 88 patients received either highly purified EPA treatment(1.8g daily, n=45) or treatment without EPA(control, n=43). Results: At baseline, the ratios of DHA/AA and DGLA/AA were significantly(P<0.05) higher in obese patients with dyslipidemia than in those without, while the EPA/AA ratio was similar between patients with and without dyslipidemia. EPA significantly reduced the hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, CRP, cardio-ankle vascular index(CAVI)(an index of arterial stiffness) and the DGLA/AA ratio relative to the control at three months after the treatment. On the other hand, EPA significantly increased the adiponectin level and EPA/AA ratio(P<0.05). A multivariate regression analysis revealed that only age, an increase in the EPA/AA ratio and a decrease in the CRP level were significant determinants of a reduction of the CAVI by EPA. Conclusion: These findings suggest that EPA improves the arterial stiffness in association with an increase in the EPA/AA ratio and a decrease in inflammation in obese patients with dyslipidemia.

The motion of the sheet of paper which falls down freely, is analyzed by the method of dynamics. In the previous work, we discussed the motion of the sheet of paper which goes inside the delivery unit of printing machine and rotates around a cylinder. In those cases, no outer force was considered except the force pulling the edge of a sheet of paper. In this work, we considered the outer forces, gravity force and fluid force. Generally, the analysis of the flow around the object is very complicated, and the fluid force affecting the object is difficult to solve. So, we analyzed the fluid force by considering the flow momentum. In this work, we analyzed the case of a sheet of free falling paper. In the future work, we are going to adopt the method discussed in this work to the sheet of paper which goes inside the printing machine.
