This study deals with contouring control system of machine tools, which uses electro-hydraulic pulse motors as its main part. First, the system's features are briefly given and the algebraic arithmetic type interpolator which is used in the system is described. Secondly, an analysis of the dynamic characteristics of thh electro-hydraulic pulse motor is given. Last, the error of the system connected to the machine tool is examined showing that the machining error will be greatly reduced by a proper use of the cutter's center path offset mechanism of the system.

Silica-supported tripod triarylphosphines that have a Ph3P-type core tripodally immobilized on silica surface enabled Pd-catalyzed borylation of chloroarenes with bis(pinacolato)diboron under mild conditions. The immobilization in tripod was crucial for the excellent performance of the Ph3P-based ligands.

A method is described that can estimate vehicle speed from video footage taken by an in-vehicle monocular camera. The method involves applying structural information and feature points to a road surface and analyzing their passage over time to accurately estimate pilot-vehicle and oncoming-vehicle speed. Experimental results demonstrated that our method estimates the speed of pilot and other moving vehicles with enough accuracy to investigate traffic accidents.

Recently, the public comment, one of the opportunities for citizens to participate in administration, is conducted not only in central government ministries and agencies, but also in local governments in Japan. In this study, we investigated actual conditions of public comments-aided citizen participation in conservation and practical use of gardens as public properties. We searched the case of public comments which were provided more than one opinion about conservation and practical use of gardens through internet. As results, we picked out 11 cases of public comment and 36 provided comments. Examining their methods, the comments, and replies from implementing administration agencies, we found some tendencies among them as described below. The offering information and prepared means for providing comments were not enough to promote citizen participation. The comments about conservation of gardens were more than their practical use. Although various subjects of the public comments were implemented, some administration agencies seamed not so positive in implementation of them. We considered that it was desired to increase public comment procedures through ensuring more fairness and transparency, to promote garden management system depended on citizen participation.

要 旨目的 : 関西の家庭医が行っている地域・コミュニティアプローチの具体的内容とゴールを明らかにすること. 方法 : 対象は, 関西家庭医療研究会または奈良県家庭医療研究会 “万葉衆” の会員. フォーカスグループディスカッションを行い, 発言を記録した上で分析を重ね, 参加者チェッキングにより真実性の確保に努めた. 結果 : 関西の家庭医の地域・コミュニティアプローチは, 1. 日常診療, 2. 自分の責任エリアの明確化, 3. 医師の地域への参加と住民による医師の品定め, 4. キーパーソンと各人のやる気の評価, 5. 課題への取り組みに対する一歩引いたところからの支援, 6. 成果と達成感の評価という6つのステップから構成されていた. そのゴールについては, 住民の自律性という説と, ゴールなどないという説とに別れた. 結論 : 今まで明示されなかった関西の家庭医特有の地域・コミュニティアプローチが存在した.

Synechococcus are distributed throughout the world’s oceans and are composed of diverse genetic lineages. However, as they are much less abundant than Prochlorococcus in oligotrophic open oceans, their in-depth genetic diversity cannot be investigated using commonly used primers targeting both Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus. Thus, in this study, we designed a primer specific to the 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the Synechococcus subcluster 5.1. Using the primer, we could selectively amplify Synechococcus sequences in oligotrophic seawater samples. Further, we showed that a barcoded amplicon pyrosequencing method could be applicable to investigate Synechococcus diversity using sequences retrieved in GenBank and obtained from environmental samples. Allowing sequence analyses of a large number of samples, this high-throughput method would be useful to study global biodiversity and biogeographic patterns of Synechococcus in marine environments.

A 70-year-old Japanese man was hospitalized for expanding purpura and chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) caused by decompensated liver cirrhosis. As there are no effective treatments for chronic DIC caused by liver cirrhosis, we decided to administer recombinant human soluble thrombomodulin (rhsTM) after he provided informed consent. The DIC was rapidly improved; however, the purpura and coagulopathy recurred after two months, and repeated rhsTM treatments were required. The rhsTM treatment sufficiently controlled the coagulopathy for two years, without any complications, including bleeding. This is the first report demonstrating that rhsTM can be administered safely and repeatedly to a patient with decompensated liver cirrhosis, and that it appears to be associated with a favorable outcome.

Statins, a group of drugs used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, have adverse effects on skeletal muscle. The symptoms of these effects range from slight myalgia to severe rhabdomyolysis. The number of patients currently taking statins is estimated to be several millions worldwide. However, the mechanism of statins’ myotoxic effects is unclear. Statins inhibit biosynthesis of mevalonate, a rate-limiting step of cholesterol synthesis, by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase. Mevalonate is also an essential precursor for producing isoprenoids such as farnesylpyrophosphate and geranylgeranylpyrophosphate. These isoprenoids are especially important for anchoring small GTPases to the membrane before they function; e.g., Ras GTPases modulate proliferation and apoptosis, Rho GTPases control cytoskeleton formation, and Rab GTPases are essential for intracellular vesicle trafficking. Inactivation of these small GTPases alters cellular functions. Recently, we successfully reproduced statin-induced myotoxicity in culture dishes using in vitro skeletal muscle systems (e.g., skeletal myotubes and myofibers). This review summarizes our findings that statins induce depletion of isoprenoids and inactivation of small GTPases, especially Rab, which are critical for statin-induced myotoxicity. Although further study is required, our findings may contribute to the prevention and treatment of statins’ adverse effects on skeletal muscle and development of safer anti-hypercholesterolemia drugs.

The Byzantine emperor John II made Syrian expeditions twice, in the 1130s and 1140s. From the beginning of the twelfth century, the Syrian cities and the Crusader States preserved the balance of power through economic agreements and military alliances. However, Zangi, ruler of Aleppo, refused to maintain this balance-of-power policy and started to advance southward in Syria to recover lost territories from the Crusaders and obtain farmland which was under Damascus' rule. John carried out his expedition at this time.John compelled Raymond of Poitiers, the consort of the heiress of Antioch, to become his liege vassal. John and Raymond agreed that Raymond would hand Antioch over to John in return for cities, currently in Muslim hands, which John would capture leading a joint Byzantine-Crusader army. But Raymond had John attack cities whose power Raymond himself wanted to reduce. Also, as the nobility of Antioch, who had come from south Italy, had influence over Raymond, John could not appoint a Greek Orthodox cleric as patriarch of Antioch. Furthermore, an encyclical issued by Pope Innocent II stating that all Latins serving in the Byzantine army were forbidden to attack Christians in Crusader States, forced John to reduce his claims on Antioch, being conscious of the West's eyes. John even sent messengers to Zangi investigating the possibility of forming an alliance with him if the nobility of Antioch rejected him.John's Syrian expeditions largely changed the balance of power in Syria and made Zangi's advance in southern Syria easy. Zangi recaptured his lost territories, just after John retreated from besieging Shaizar, where Zangi had confronted him. The Byzantine threat and the reputation which Zangi gained as a strong leader made Damascus yield him Hims, which would be a base for his further advance southward in Syria.
