Vitamin A is an important trace essential nutrient. Vitamin A is present as a retinyl ester in animal foods and as β-carotene (provitamin A), which is a precursor of vitamin A, in plant foods such as green and yellow vegetables. After ingestion and absorption in the body, these are converted into retinol and stored as retinyl esters in stellate cells in the liver. The stored retinyl esters are decomposed into retinol as needed, and converted into the aldehyde retinal, which plays an important role in vision. Retinoic acid (RA) has a variety of effects. In particular, RA is used as a therapeutic agent for acute promyelocytic leukemia. This review will cover (1) elucidation of anti-refractory cancer effects of retinol (vitamin A) not mediated by RA receptors, (2) elucidation of anti-cancer effects of RA not mediated by RA receptors and (3) the development of candidate new anti-cancer agents that combine the actions of RA and retinol. Lessons learned from these findings are that vitamin A has anti-cancer activity not mediated by RA receptors; that nutritional management of vitamin A leads to prevention and treatment of cancer, and that new compounds developed from RA derivatives represent good anti-cancer drug candidates that are in various stages of clinical trials.

通年性鼻アレルギーの患者21例を対象に, 甜茶エキスキャンディー (甜茶エキス120mg/日) を4週間連続経口投与し, その有効性, 安全性および有用性について検討を行った。全般改善度は, 投与2週目, 4週目で「中等度改善」以上が35.0%, 最終全般改善度は,「中等度改善」以上が47.6%を示した。副作用は認められず, 有用度は「有用」以上が47.6%であった。症状別改善度では, くしゃみ発作, 鼻汁, 水性分泌量, 鼻誘発試験および鼻汁中好酸球数で, 統計学的に有意な改善が認められた。以上の結果より, 甜茶エキスキャンディーは通年性鼻アレルギーに対して有用であると考えられた。

In the present practice of a lesson unit, 1st-year high school students of one classroom had classes with speaking activities designed to enhance their interactive skills with which they can develop their conversation cooperatively to reach agreement. Their 3-week engagement in the speaking module focusing on sub-skill training, which would enable them to play better roles in interactive settings, preceded 3-week intensive engagement in role-play activities. The analysis, comparing their pre-test performance to their post-test performance, shows they became able to ask more confirmation questions, give more comments before showing opposite views, and argue logically. The result supports the view that the engagement in the role-play speaking activities help high school students become more aware of making the speech more interactive while exchanging their opinions.

地球温暖化に伴う気候変動の影響が世界各地で顕在化する中,影響への適応を前提とした社会の仕組みづくりや行動様式の変革が求められている.しかし,適応するのはそう簡単なことではない.本稿では,適応行動の障害となる各種課題を抽出し,適応格差を是正するために必要な政策視点を経済学的見地から整理・提言する.その際,適応インセンティブを阻むメカニズムとして,4つの要因:「所得格差」,「リスク認知」,「保護政策とモラル・ハザード」,「既存技術や生産構造とのトレード・オフ」に焦点を当て,これらに関連する最新のミクロ実証研究を主な検証材料として取り上げる.

研究活動報告(Research and Activity Report)2008年10月23日から10月27日にわたりイタリアのピエモンテ州トリノ市で「テッラ・マードレ(Terra Madre)2008」が開催された。「テッラ・マードレ」とは食のコミュニティの世界大会であり、国際スローフード協会とイタリアの農林水産省、外務省の経済推進局、ピエモンテ州とトリノ市の協力により開催されている。もともと、世界規模の生産者会議という名の下で行われていたこのイベントは、世界中の生産者はもちろんのこと、料理人、研究者、若者、ボランティアスタッフ等が集まり、交流を深める場として機能している。農業と食に関わる生物多様性を保護するために最も有効であるとして、この国際的な情報・意見交換が行われている。また、今年は「若者」と「音楽」という新しいカテゴリーが加わった。「若者」のカテゴリーが加わったのには、若者が食の運動を展開していこうとする「ユース・フード・ムーブメント(Youth Food Movement、以下、YFM)」という新たなネットワークが作られた事が背景にある。本稿では、このYFMに焦点を当て、「テッラ・マードレ2008」について報告する。
