Hemichorea-hemiballism (HCHB) due to transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) is rare. An 83-year-old woman had repeated episodes of right-sided HCHB for 3 months. Magnetic resonance (MR) angiography demonstrated occlusion of the left carotid and middle cerebral arteries and severe stenosis of the innominate artery, and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring showed a blood pressure decrease of >20 mmHg after each meal. We speculated that HCHB developed as TIAs due to hemodynamic failure in the left cerebral hemisphere, caused by a combination of severe stenosis of the innominate artery concomitant with occlusion of the left carotid and middle cerebral arteries as well as postprandial hypotension.

When medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) larvae are grown in the absence of exogenous nutrition, the liver becomes dark and positive to Oil Red O staining from 7 days post-hatch (dph). We determined the mechanism of this starvation-induced development of fatty liver by proteomic analysis using livers obtained from larvae grown in the presence or absence of 2% glucose at 5 dph. Results showed that changes in the expression levels of enzymes involved in glycolysis or the tricarboxylic acid cycle were modest, whereas the expression levels of enzymes involved in amino acid catabolism or β-oxidation of fatty acids were significantly elevated, suggesting that they become major energy sources under starvation conditions. Expression levels of enzymes for the uptake and β-oxidation of fatty acids as well as synthesis of triacylglycerol were elevated, whereas those for the synthesis of cholesterol as well as export of cholesterol and triacylglycerol were decreased under starvation conditions, which explains the accumulation of triacylglycerol in the liver. Our results provide the basis for future research to understand how gene malfunction(s) affects the development of fatty liver, which can lead to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and then to liver cirrhosis.Key words: amino acid catabolism, β-oxidation, triacylglycerol, cholesterol, export

腎不全患者では, 体液に移行した水分は透析などで除く以外に方法はない. そこで, 経口摂取した水分が腸管から吸収される前に高吸収性ポリマーで吸収し, 循環系へ入る水分量を抑制する方法を考案した. 今回, 各種ポリマーを用いた消化管内水分吸水能についての基礎的検討を行なった. ポリマーは, ポリアクリル酸Na (PA-Na), ポリアクリル酸Ca (PA-Na), 粒径の異なるN-ビニルアセトアミド (PNVA-1, PNVA-2) の4種類を作製し, 水, 生理食塩水, 人工胃液, 人工腸液を用いて吸水能を測定した. PA-Na1gに対する吸水量は水640m1/gと最も多く, PA-Caが2ml/gと最も少なく, PNVA4, 2はその中間の吸水力であり, これら各種ポリマーの吸水量は液の性状, pHなどにより大きな差が見られた. また, ヒト腸液を用いた検討でも吸水性に関し同様の結果が得られた. 吸水前後における組成分析では, 吸水後, PA1NaでNaの, PA-CaでCaの有意な増加がみられたが, PNVA-1, および2では, 有意な変化を認めなかった. 今回の検討から, 吸水材は十分に臨床応用可能と思われ, 特に非イオン型ポリマーであるPNVAの有用性が示唆された.

本研究では,イベント会場での非常に混雑した状況や災害時などのパニック状況において,意識下で注意を制御し,行動を誘導することを目指した歩行誘導実験を行った.具体的には周辺視にオプティカルフロー刺激を提示することで歩行者の視線方向を制御し,更に足元へ身体動揺を与え体性感覚のゲインを下げることで,視線方向へ有意に身体を誘導する実験を行った.実験から視線方向に身体が誘導されることを確認し,更に誘導効果が現れるタイミングから歩行における視覚と体性感覚のスイッチング機構について検討した.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are widely used as components of marine structures. Thus, it is important to understand the degradation of the mechanical properties and its mechanism under seawater immersion. The object of this study is the influence of seawater immersion on the mechanical properties of plain woven CFRP laminates. Static tensile test and tensile fatigue test were carried out on the CFRP immersed different time under seawater for 300, 2500 and 5400 hours. The mechanical properties immersed for 300 hours was almost the same value compared with those of no immersion. However, the tensile strength immersed for both 2500 and 5400 hours reduced by 22.5% compared with that of no immersion. Then, from the fatigue results, in the low-cycle fatigue region, the fatigue strengths decreased as immersion time was longer, on the other hand, in the high-cycle fatigue region, the fatigue strength did not change significantly regardless of immersion time. As a result, the inclination of S-N curves became gentle as immersion time was longer. From observation of fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was shown that the fiber/matrix interface deteriorated remarkably after seawater immersion. Moreover, the difference of damage growth behaviors due to immersed in seawater under fatigue loading was investigated using soft X-ray photography. On specimen immersed in seawater, the accumulation of damage expanded more widely due to interface degradation compared with that of no immersion. Considering these results, it was suggested that the static tensile strength depended on load transmission efficiency between fiber and matrix, on the other hand, the fatigue strength in high cycle fatigue region depended on the strength of fiber along 0° that had small influences by seawater immersion.

Objective: Recently, the number of structural heart disease (SHD) procedures has increased, leading to increased radiation exposure doses of physicians. Information about SHD physicians’ exposure is insufficient to elucidate their degree of exposure. Physicians’ radioprotection is therefore poor or sometimes overly cautious. This study uses quantitative evaluation with a physical simulation to elucidate the exposure dose sustained by physicians during SHD procedures.Methods: The reported Monte Carlo system was used for dose estimation while using statistical sampling to simulate particle interactions in matter. The simulation geometry resembled an actual SHD procedure. Body models were posturally transformed to simulate a physician’s posture for the procedure faithfully and correctly.Results: Doses for the left eye lens in the upper body were about 1.5 times higher than doses for the right eye lens under all fluoroscopic directions. Doses for the left-hand skin were twice those for the right side. Hand skin doses varied depending on the direction. The same applied to doses for abdominal skin.Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that physicians’ exposures differ significantly depending on the fluoroscopic directions. Physicians should understand the dose differences and endeavor to reduce risks posed by self-exposure.

日本国内に生息する大型の草食動物であるニホンジカ(以下、シカ)とカモシカとの生息域や餌資源を巡る種間競争について、 (1)自動撮影装置を用いた両種の土地利用傾向調査、(2)次世代シーケンサーを用いたDNAバーコーディングによる両種の餌植物構成調査、を実施した。(1)の結果より、森林内の利用傾向は両種間で季節的、空間的に異なることが明らかとなった。また(2)の結果より、特定の餌植物種は種間で出現頻度に偏りが見られたものの、餌植物の種構成自体はほぼ差がないため、シカによる下層植生の衰退は両種の餌資源の競合をより強める可能性があることが示唆された。

Objectives: Most COVID-19 outbreaks in South Korea occurred through close contact in dense and closed indoor environments. However, a COVID-19 outbreak occurred in a group that camped together at an outdoor camping site in 2020, raising the need to observe precautions even when outdoors. We aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and the risk factors for transmission for developing precautionary measures during outdoor activities.Methods: A study was conducted among 10 patients during the outbreak that occurred at a domestic camping site in July 2020. The demographic and epidemiological characteristics were obtained through an epidemiological investigation; the transmission risk was evaluated through additional site visits and CCTV analysis.Results: The incidence rate of this outbreak was 55.6%. No other common sources of exposure other than that within the campsite were identified; the outbreak possibly occurred due to transmission via close contact with infected people during mealtime and conversation throughout the camping period without implementation of adequate prevention and control measures.Conclusion: It is the first COVID-19 outbreak that occurred at an outdoor camping site in South Korea. COVID-19 can spread even when outdoors, prevention and control measures such as maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask should be observed when a large number of people gather outdoors. To ensure safe camping, facility managers should keep the cleaning and hygiene, and users should minimize the risk of infection by following the recommended precautions while staying in public spaces.
