Renin and neuronal nitric oxide synthase in the kidney control the renin-angiotensin and tubuloglomerular feedback systems. The present study investigated the expression of renin and neuronal nitric oxide synthase in the dysplastic kidneys of three young dogs. Renin-immunoreactivity, which occurs in the juxtaglomerular and tubular cells of dysplastic kidneys, did not differ from that in the normal kidneys of young dogs. Macula densa cells in the normal kidneys showed neuronal nitric oxide synthase -immunoreactivity, but those in the dysplastic kidneys showed no apparent signals. This observation may be correlated with the pathological mechanisms of renal failure in young dogs.

This prospective, comparative, randomized, horizontal, and double-blind clinical study investigated the clinical efficacy of leucocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma (PRP, n=8) or allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC, n=8) in dogs with bilateral degenerative hip joint disease (DHJD). Sixteen dogs were treated with two intra-articular injections of PRP or ADSCs, within a 30-day interval. The Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI), the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index (HCPI), and Visual Analogue Scales for pain (VAS-pain) and locomotion (VAS-loc) were assessed by the dog owners. Analysis-of-gait using a force plate, response to palpation (VAS-palp), and the descriptive numerical scale for pain (DNS) were measured by a veterinarian. The assessments were performed before (baseline), 30 and 60 days after the first treatment. Data were analyzed using the unpaired-t test, paired Wilcoxon test, Fisher´s exact test, and Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests (P<0.05). Compared with baseline HCPI, CBPI, VAS-pain, and VAS-palp scores reduced 41%, 52%, 51%, and 48% (P=0.0001–0.03) at 60 days in the ADSC group. In PRP-treated dogs, CBPI, VAS-loc, and DNS scores decreased by 43%, 43%, and 33% at 60 days, respectively (P=0.0003–0.011). Based on CBPI data, the rate of success at 60 days was 75% and 25% in the ADSC and PRP groups (P=0.13), respectively. Both therapies were apparently safe and effective to reduce chronic pain in dogs with bilateral DHJD during a 60-day period. However, a trend towards greater improvement was provided by the ADSC treatment.

【背景・目的】近年、イヌをはじめとする社会生活を営む動物は、動物福祉向上の観点から複数頭で群飼育することが求められるようになっており、より生態に近い飼育環境へ改善することで、精度・再現性の高い実験となることが期待されている。一方で、群飼育下での安全性試験の実施は、動物同士の接触、干渉などが毒性評価へ影響を及ぼす懸念があるほか、飼育器材の改良も必要となり、わが国におけるGLP試験での実施例はまだ多くない。今回我々は、群飼育下でイヌにおける13週間反復投与試験を実施し、良好な成績を得ると共に、今後の課題を抽出したので紹介する。【方法】入手時8~9カ月齢のビーグル犬を2~3頭のグループで飼育した。通常の個別飼育ケージ(W 900×D 900×H 1590 mm)の両側面を開閉式に改良し、複数ケージを連結できるものを使用した。単飼育は投与、給餌、尿検査、心電図検査並びに獣医学的ケアの観点から必要と判断された場合に限定し、その他の期間は群飼育とした。群分けでは、馴化期間中のグループは考慮せず、個別の体重値に基づく層別割付を行った。層別割付後に同一投与群内で2~3匹の新たなグループを作成し、相性確認で問題がないことが確認された場合にグループ成立とした。【結果】群分けにおいて、新たなグループは全て成立した。各種検査項目には単飼育時との明らかな差は認められなかった。ケージ症状の観察では、個体の特定の可否を明確に記録することで、単飼育時との検出感度の差を最小限にとどめることができた。なお、雄の1グループで投与9週目に闘争による負傷が発生し、それ以降は単飼育としたが、その他のグループでは問題は認められなかった。【結論】本実験条件下では、既に単飼育で実施した短期間投与の試験成績と大きな齟齬は生じなかった。今後、住環境の改善など更なる動物実験における福祉向上を目指すと共に、リソースの有効活用も追求していく必要があると考えられる。

<p>"Katari" holds an important function in the traditional Japanese theatre. But the word could be rendered into English as story-telling, narrative, narration, or even monologue. In fact, "katari" has been used in different senses on different occasions, and thus the discussion on "katari" has often become confusing in the theatre scholarship in Japan.</p><p>In this special issue on "Katari and Theatre" we examine the various functions of "katari" in theatre, both Western and Japanese, traditional and modern. We hope that nine articles and one research note included here will make some contribution to the future discussion on "katari" in general.</p>

Landing in Luck (1919), William Faulkner's first short story, is rendered so humorously that he seems to have been far less affected by World War I than his contemporaries, Dos Passos, E. E. Cummings, and Hemingway. Yet, if we pay attention to the fact that "The Lilacs," Soldiers' Pay, and the return of Bayard Sartoris in Flags in the Dust are all set in the spring of 1919, the year following the armistice, we know the author himself was well aware of "the post-war malaise and sense of paralysis." Therefore, we must read Soldiers' Pay, his first novel, as a work of one of the "wastelanders."Donald Mahon, a maimed war hero, returns to Georgia in April, the month which reminds us of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. The month, far from promising regeneration, turns out to be the cruellest one not only for the returning soldier but for the people around him—his father, the Reverend Mahon, his fiancee, Cecily Saunders, and his previous girl friend, Emmy. Donald, who lives in "nothingness" just like Benjy in The Sound and the Fury, is used as a mirror, "a moral touchstone" by which the community of Charlestown may be judged. If he is one of those who have taken "soldiers' pay," Margaret and Gilligan, who take him home, also share, more or less, the nihilism and disillusionment of those post-war years. Margaret, suffering from the sense of infidelity toward her late three-day husband, masochistically seeks both atonement and punishment in her affection for and marriage to Donald, her husband's surrogate; homeless and rootless, Gilligan seems unable to find any firm meaning to his life.More than any other character, the Reverend is spiritually "half dead"with his unstable faith in God, the spiritual disability which may be the cause for his strange lack of reference to Easter. Januarius Jones, a fellow of Latin in college, pursues the women around Donald and therefore is intended to be a parody of the sexless and amnesiac Donald who, like the marble faun, is bound in passive, impersonal observation.It is true that some modernistic experiments are attempted in this novel: the use of rather simple forms of interior monologue, the voices of the town, and the letters addressed by Julian Lowe, a young cadet, to Margaret, letters which change from a passionate note to a cold brief message. Their introduction in the course of the story effectively conveys the sense of the inexorable passage of time, as well as the temporariness and waste of love.In spite of these artistic devices, Soldiers' Pay still lacks the Southern milieu, inner and outer, which becomes obvious in Flags in the Dust (completed in 1927), because the author was not deeply aware of the important function of the milieu to present characters with their background. So, there are unnecessary ambiguities, such as Januarius's insipient relation with the Reverend, or Gilligan's intention to remain in the town after his separation from Margaret. To grow maturer as a writer, Faulkner needs what T. S. Eliot calls "the historical sense, which we may call nearly indispensable to any one who would continue to be a poet beyond his twenty-fifth year," though Faulkner calls himself "a failed poet."

<p>「地球外生命は存在するだろうか.」この問いは,「生命とは何か」というもうひとつの問いに対して宇宙で普遍的に通用する答えを得ることに繋がる.このふたつの問いに答える最も直接的な手段が,太陽系における地球外生命探査である.地球外生命の証拠はまだ見出されてはいないが,近年の様々な探査を通して,生命探査の対象となる天体,すなわちエネルギーや物質の観点で生命を育み得る環境を持つ天体の候補がいくつか見つかってきている.本稿では,火星,木星衛星エウロパ,土星衛星エンセラダスおよびタイタンを具体的な対象に,それらの天体がなぜ地球外生命の存在可能性を有するのかについて現状の知見をまとめる.</p>

Male meiosis in natural decosaploid (22x) Morus nigra L. has been found regular with good pollen fertility. This is the clear indication of cytological stability attained by the polyploid to maintain its level. Young pollen mother cells showed 1-4 nucleoli. The frequency of bivalents was more than that of multivalents and univalents occur rarely which clearly indicates the auto-allopolyploid nature of the taxon. The normal meiotic behaviour of this high polyploid is discussed in relation to its evolution.

最近,遠隔操作型のコミュニケーションロボットが用いられ始めてきた.本研究のねらいは,このような遠隔操作型のロボットと人が相互作用する際,人はロボット自身と相互作用しているように感じるのか,それとも背後の人と相互作用していると感じるのか,またそのような感じ方の違いは,相互作用にどのような影響を与えるのだろうか,ということを検証することである.そこで本研究では,ロボットはプログラムによって自律的に動いていると被験者に教示する条件と,ロボットは操作者によって遠隔操作されていると被験者に教示する条件の2 つの実験条件を設定し,2 つの条件間における被験者のロボットに対する印象の差異を検証した.実験では,被験者は人型ロボットと,アイコンタクトや接触行動などお互いの身体を使った相互作用を行い,そのときのロボットの印象を評価した.実験の結果として,2/3 の被験者は,ロボット自身と相互作用していると感じており,彼らの感じた楽しさは,ロボットが操作されているのかどうかといった事前知識には影響されていなかった.また,残りの1/3 の被験者はロボットの背後の人と相互作用しているように感じており,彼らの相互作用は事前知識に影響されていた.ロボット自身ではなく,背後の人間と相互作用していると感じていた被験者は,自律型ロボットと相互作用すると教示された場合には,より相互作用が楽しいと感じ,相互作用時間も増えていた.一方で,操作型ロボットと相互作用すると教示された場合は,よりつまらないと感じ,相互作用時間も減少していた.
