音楽では、1つの音はそれ以前の音および次の音との関係で意味をもつ。そこで、ある時間間隔(数個の音符)におけるエントロピーを導入し、このエントロピーの時間変化から音楽を解析する。現に聞いている音(音符)を基準とし、この音との協和性で音にランクをつける。ランクは、同一音のランクを零とし、漸次その協和性の減少にともないランクの数を増大させる。音を解釈しているときに参考にされていると思われるそれ以前の数個の音符の平均ランク数よりこの時点でのエントロピーが求まる。音楽が進行するにつれ、エントロピーが変化していく。同一のエントロピー時系列をもつ異なる音楽から変奏曲が得られ、エントロピーの作図から作曲ができる。我々の解析から音楽の秘密は「カオスの縁のまわりの1/fゆらぎ」と思われる。A time series of entropy of music is introduced, and music is analyzed with the series. The entropy is calculated by an average rank number of several notes whose positions are located just before the present note. The rank number is defined by the degree of consonance between the present note and the considered note. Variations can be obtained with the use of the entropy series of the original music. We obtain the conjecture that the heart of music is thought to be 1/f fluctuation around the edge of chaos.

This paper presents a quantitative evaluation method for seat arrangements in commuter railway cars. The purpose of the study is to evaluate seat arrangements based on passenger comfort and accessibility, which are important during train operation. To determine the unknown parameters in the function, experimental examination was done. A full-scale mockup with variable seat arrangements was manufactured. It was modeled on a 20 m-long car with four or six doors per side, because a choice of the door arrangement is one of the main parameters. Using this mockup, comfort and accessibility were measured for ten types of seat arrangements. The results of the proposed evaluation functions using computer simulations agreed with measured experimental results. Applying the evaluation method to several seat arrangements, it is found that the most suitable seat arrangement depends on the average boarding time of passengers. From the evaluated results, suitable seat arrangements for commuter trains are discussed.

幕末・明治期の絵師・河鍋暁斎は「地獄太夫図」を得意とし、作例も多い。中でも図像の類似が著しいウェストン・コレクション「一休禅師地獄太夫図」、ゴールドマン・コレクション「地獄太夫と一休」、クリーブランド美術館所蔵「屏風の前の美人」、河鍋暁斎記念美術館所蔵「極楽太夫図」、ボストン美術館所蔵「地獄太夫図」の計5 点に着目し、それぞれに描かれた地獄太夫の打掛文様を比較検討した。その結果、典拠である山東京伝の読本『本朝酔菩提全伝』で地獄模様とされた打掛を、暁斎が七福神と宝尽くしによる見立て地獄模様に変えた点は共通するが、各作品には明確な差異が見出された。具体的には、ウェストン本の打掛文様は最も緻密で、隅々にまで洒落が効いており、暁斎の手によるものと考えられる。ゴールドマン本の図柄はウェストン本とほぼ同一ながら、やや手数が少ない。クリーブランド本と暁斎美術館本は七福神の筆致が前2 作とは異なる上、図像に不完全な部分があり、模写の際に写し崩れが生じたと考えられる。ボストン本は、ウェストン本で展開された見立てが複数個所で成立しておらず、絵師が暁斎の意図を理解しきれずに写し崩れが著しくなったと推測される。

20世紀後半のポーランドを代表する作家スタニスワフ・レムは、自身の作品の中で一貫して人間の認知の問題、とりわけ理解不能な「他者」を前にしたコンタクトの可能性について考察してきた作家である。こうしたレムの問題関心は、現代の多くの社会学的問題、例えば認知症患者のケアの現場などにおける介護者-被介護者の相互理解の問題などを考える際に多くの示唆を与えてくれるものである。本稿はこうした観点から、スタニスワフ・レムの短編『テルミヌス』を取り上げ、理解不可能な存在を「受容する」ということの可能性について考える。『テルミヌス』において特徴的なのは、そこに登場するロボットがまるで老衰した、認知症を患った老人であるかのように描かれているということであり、主人公であるピルクスは、そうしたロボットの「ままならない」身体に対して何らかの応答を余儀なくされる。本稿は、こうしたレム作品における不自由な他者の身体を前にした人間の責任-応答可能性について考えることで、介護に内在する希望と困難を指摘する。

Aim: The prevalence of overweight and a change in atherosclerotic lipid profiles may be linked to region-specific differences in atherosclerotic diseases. We evaluated whether the lipid phenotype could be linked to region- and sex-specific differences in the degree of atherosclerosis.Methods: Non-diabetic subjects included Okinawa (n=1674) and Nagano (n=1392) residents aged 30–75 years who underwent carotid ultrasonography for the measurement of maximum intima-media thickness (max IMT).Results: Average max IMT was higher in Okinawa men and women, and the increase in max IMT with age was enhanced in men. Multiple regression analysis showed that in addition to age and systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were IMT determinants only in men for both Okinawa and Nagano. Meanwhile, HDL-cholesterol was a determinant for Okinawa men and women, but not for Nagano men and women.Conclusions: This is the first report to show region- and sex-specific differences in the determinants for max IMT in a Japanese population. The evaluation of the relationship between lipid profile patterns and region- and sex-specific differences in carotid atherosclerosis burden may be required.

2016年2月12日午前0時30分(日本時間), 米国の重力波検出器LIGOが, 世界で初めて重力波の直接検出に成功したことを発表した. 本稿は情報処理技術が今回の重力波検出に果たした役割を概観する. また, 稼働が間近に迫っている日本の重力波検出器KAGRA(岐阜県飛騨市神岡町)において,どのように情報処理技術が活用されているかについても紹介する.
