BACKGROUND: Disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) data for 47 prefectures in Japan were reported in 1999; however, few studies have identified the factors associated with the length of the DFLE. The objective of this study was to elucidate the primary factors that explain differences in DFLEs in Japan.METHODS: In our ecological study, 47 prefectures in Japan were used as units of analysis. The DFLEs for men and women at 65 years of age (DFLE65), calculated by Hashimoto et al using Sullivan's method, were set as dependent variables. From various national surveys, 181 factors associated with demographics, socioeconomic status, health status and health behaviors, medical environment, social relationships, climate, and other areas were gathered as independent variables. Pearson's or Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated to screen independent variables potentially associated with the DFLE65s. Then, multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted for the selected 24 independent variables after adjusting for the proportion of older people (65 years or more) and population density.RESULTS: Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that the large number of public health nurses per 100,000 population, a good self-reported health status, and a high proportion of older workers were significantly associated with long DFLE65s for both genders.CONCLUSIONS: These three factors could potentially explain the differences in DFLE of the older population in Japan.J Epidemiol 2005; 15:219-227.

The “Argentina Maru” is the first motor passenger and cargo ship to he constructed under the special Shipbuilding Subsily of the first grade grented by the Japanese Government, and this magnificent Round-the-World Liner is wholly of Japanese construction and materials. In vi w of these circumstances, it seems to be appropriate to make some reference to the ship; therefore a general description of the vast design, construction, equipment, etc., is given in this paper.

MRSA選択分離培地(MRSA-CI寒天培地,CHROMagar MRSA II寒天培地,MDRS-K寒天培地)について発育支持能および鑑別性能の比較検討を行った。発育支持能をMiles & Misra法により評価した結果,3種類の培地に差は認められず,ほぼ同等の発育支持能を有していた。鑑別性能については,鼻腔分泌物等の臨床材料120検体を用いて,24時間および48時間培養後に発育状況を判定した。24時間判定におけるそれぞれの培地の感度/特異度は,MRSA-CIが88.4% / 100%,CHROMagar MRSA IIが90.7% / 100%,MDRS-Kが88.4% / 100%であった。48時間判定においては,MRSA-CIが95.3% / 100%,CHROMagar MRSA IIが95.3% / 100%,MDRS-Kが95.3% / 97.4%であり,3培地ともほぼ同程度であった。また,いずれの培地においても24時間判定に比べて48時間判定で検出感度が向上した。MRSA選択分離培地は,簡便性に優れたMRSA検出法であるが,菌量が少量の場合や呈色が弱い菌株では,検出・判定が困難となることもあり,各培地の特性を十分把握したうえで適切に使用する必要があると考えられた。

本論考では,組織開発における組織診断が組織のその後の経過に与える影響について事例を用いて検討し,組織診断という働きかけがどのようなプロセスで組織の「時間」に影響を与えるかを論じた。組織開発における組織診断とは,何が,どのように起こっているのかという組織の行動と現状を組織自身が理解することを目指して行われる。組織診断とフィードバック,その後のフォローアップの事例におけるアンケートから,組織診断が組織のダイナミックスへ与える影響が考察された。具体的には,組織診断とフィードバックにより,組織の「今」をどう捉えるのかという共通認識が生成されたこと,また,フォローアップのインタビューとアンケートの結果から,組織診断後に協力的コミュニケーションの兆しが見られたことが示唆された。最後に,組織診断とその後の組織内の対話を経て,組織の時間的展望が生成され,それがモラールへ影響したという視点で今回の事例が考察された。具体的には,時間的展望の発達が個々人の主体性・能動性に繋がったという視点と,時間的展望が問題意識を共有する成員を結びつける形で協力的コミュニケーションに繋がったという視点から考察された。

Results of the quantum biological study of an interaction of potent carcinogens such as 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxides and aromatic hydrocarbons with tissue components, especially with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), are presented and chemical carcinogenesis is discussed in connection with charge transfer phenomenon. An equation is derived to obtain the charge transfer quantity between two constituent molecules in the charge transfer complex, and distinct parallelism is found between the quantity of charge transfer and carcinogenic activity. From this result, it is suggested that the quantity of charge transfer is more important in the genesis of tumor than the charge transfer force. Summation of an alteration of base paring in Watson-Crick stereo-model of DNA resulting from the charge transfer between DNA and the carcinogens is deemed to be the cause of tumor.

教育現場における漢字テストが持つ課題には、学習者の意欲が喚起されないという意欲に関する点と書字力に傾斜し漢字運用力を育成することまで視野に入れていない点が挙げられる。本稿の主眼は、この二つの課題を同時に解決する実践を開発し、検討することにある。そこで、小学校での漢字小テストに着目し、出題されている漢字の他用例を書き込んでいく「他用例書き込み」実践を考案し、その実践的検討を行った。学習者は回数を重ねる度に書き込みの数を増やしていき、教科書等に未記載の用例で漢字を書けたり、作文でより多くの漢字を使用したりするようになったことに加え、漢字の書字力や読字力にも向上が見られた。学習者の変化の要因をM-GTAを用いて考察すると、意欲の高まりを契機とした循環作用が起き、漢字テストに向けた学習方法も語彙を増やす方向へと質の向上を見せていた。

Paenibacillus xylaniclasticus strain TW1, a gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium, was isolated as a xylanolytic microorganism from the wastes of a pineapple processing factory. A gene encoding one of its xylanolytic enzymes, a β-xylosidase, was cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis revealed that this β-xylosidase, named PxXyl43A, was composed of a glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 43 subfamily 12 catalytic module and an unknown function module (UM). The full-length PxXyl43A (PxXyl43A) was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. Recombinant PxXyl43A exhibited hydrolysis activity against both p-nitrophenyl-β-D xylopyranoside (pNPX) and p-nitrophenyl-α-L-arabinofuranoside at specific activities of 250 mU/mg and 310 mU/mg, respectively. The optimal reaction pH and temperature for pNPX hydrolysis were 7.1 and 54 °C, respectively. At pH 7.0 and 54 °C, the Km and kcat for pNPX were 1.2 mM and 2.8 ± 0.15 s-1, respectively. It was also discovered that the recombinant unknown function module of PxXyl43A (PxXyl43A-UM) could bind to insoluble xylans like birchwood xylan and oat spelt xylan, whereas it did not bind to cellulosic substrates such as ball-milled cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose or lichenan. The PxXyl43A-UM’s binding constant value Ka for oat spelt xylan was 2.0 × 10-5 M-1. These results suggest that PxXyl43A possesses a novel carbohydrate-binding module, named as CBMx, specific for xylan-containing polysaccharides.

Following the development of high-resolution imaging, digital elevation models, thermal and hydrological data, and onsite ground information during the early period of the 21st century, the periglacial geomorphology of the Martian surface advanced rapidly. Images can even resolute meter-scale landforms, enabling identification of most periglacial features and analysis of their global distributions and detailed morphologies. This review focuses on progress in research covering permafrost distribution, patterned ground, possible heave and subsidence features, lobate debris forms, and slope-lineated features during the last decade. Most of the Martian high-latitude surface is underlain by ice-rich ground called the latitude-dependent mantle (LDM), which favors permafrost-related features possibly developed under warm-humid conditions during past high-obliquity periods or partially s,till active under the present cold-dry conditions. Thermal contraction cracking is likely to prevail in the LDM, resulting in high-centered, flat-top polygons, possibly underlain by sublimation-type wedges or sand wedges that prevail at high latitudes. The surface patterns change into subdued or peak-top polygons toward the mid-latitudes, probably reflecting long-term sublimation of the LDM. Some researchers attribute stone circles to sorting due to freeze-thaw, but the features are much larger than candidates on the Earth. Small isolated domes with concentric cracks or craters at the top may include pingos, which also prevail at high- to mid-latitudes. Asymmetrical scalloped depressions may result from sublimation or thawing of the LDM, but there is a debate between pole-ward and equator-ward slope retreats. Lobate debris aprons may originate from creep of ice-rock mixtures or debris-covered glaciers, but the distinction between the two origins is unclear, as in the long-lasting debate on terrestrial candidates. Some thin, smaller debris lobes at high latitudes resemble stone-banked solifluction lobes on the Earth, which may indicate the occurrence of seasonal freeze-thaw cycles in the recent past. Time-series images indicate active slope features, including gullies, slope streaks, and recurrent slope lineaes that develop below cliffs. These active features may originate from outflows of brine that thaws far below the melting point of water ice.
