Family stability is an important concern in modern society. In Japan, there has never been any predictive study concerning this problem. In order to stimulate Japanese scholars and case workers to undertake study of this problem it is desirable to know something of the nature of such studies in foreign countries, especially in the United States where most work has been done on the problem to date. This paper is limited to a review of research methods in the United States.Such predictive studies can be classified into four types, according to the following two criteria.A. Predication of probabilities of marital happiness from premarital factors, or prediction from marital conditions.B. Prediction of probabilities of marital happiness by the use of other, methods, such as the post-facto, the cross-sectional, the follow-up and the longitudinal methods.The nature of these techniques can be suggested in this manner;1. Post-facto predictive studies from premarital experience.2. Post-facto predictive studies from marital life.3. Follow-up predictive studies from premarital life.4. Follow-up predictive studies from marital life.The following are the methodological problems dealt with in this article according to this classification.1. The halo effect in post-facto studies.2. The representative nature of samples.3. Combinations of predictive items between husband and wife and configurations of predictive factors.4. Reliability and validity of happiness scales and predictive scales.5. Various problems in practice, etc. Finally, this paper treats, from the methodological and practical point of view, the relation between the method of statistical prediction and the method of prediction from case studies.

Patients undergoing cardiac surgery remain on mechanical ventilation postoperatively until they regain consciousness. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) may influence the duration of mechanical ventilation after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different levels of PEEP on the duration of mechanical ventilation after coronary artery bypass grafting. This was a randomized clinical trial with 136 patients undergoing CABG between January 2011 and March 2012. We divided the patients into three groups with different levels of PEEP at the onset of mechanical ventilation: Group A, PEEP = 5 cmH2O (n = 44); Group B, PEEP = 8 cmH2O (n = 47) and Group C, PEEP = 10 cmH2O (n = 45). Mechanical ventilation time was obtained from a Physical Therapy Evaluation Form. We excluded patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and those requiring concomitant, emergency or off-pump surgeries. For statistical analysis, we used the Kruskal-Wallis, G and Chi-square tests, with p <0.05 considered significant. From the point of weaning from mechanical ventilation until 12 hours after intensive care unit (ICU) admission, we saw a statistically different duration of mechanical ventilation between groups (p = 0.029). In Group A, the average mechanical ventilation time was 6.7 ± 3.2 hours; it was 6.8 ± 3.3 hours in Group B and 5.1 ± 2.9 hours in Group C. The use of higher levels of PEEP was associated with shorter duration of mechanical ventilation in postoperative CABG patients.

Tactile stimulation is an important factor in mother-infant interactions. Many studies on both human and animals have shown that tactile stimulation during the neonatal period has various beneficial effects in the subsequent growth of the body and brain. In particular, massage is often applied to preterm human babies as “touch care”, because tactile stimulation together with kinesthetic stimulation increases body weight, which is accompanied by behavioral development and the changes of endocrine and neural conditions. Among them, the elevation of insulin-like growth factor-1, catecholamine, and vagus nerve activity may underlie the body weight gain. Apart from the body weight gain, tactile stimulation has various effects on the nervous system and endocrine system. For example, it has been reported that tactile stimulation on human and animal babies activates parasympathetic nervous systems, while suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenalcortical (HPA) axis, which may be related to the reduction of emotionality, anxiety-like behavior, and pain sensitivity. In addition, animal experiments have shown that tactile stimulation improves learning and memory. Facilitation of the neuronal activity and the morphological changes including the hippocampal synapse may underlie the improvement of the learning and memory. In conclusion, it has been strongly suggested that tactile stimulation in early life has beneficial effects on body, brain structure and function, which are maintained throughout life.

根室海峡周辺ではシロザケ Oncorhynchus keta とカラフトマス O. gorbusha の中間的な外部形態を有する「サケマス」と呼ばれる個体が採集される。「サケマス」を DNA 分析により交雑個体であるか検討した。両種の mtDNA と核 DNA の塩基配列から特定種の増幅産物が得られるようにプライマーを設計し,SSP (species specific primers)-PCR 分析により親種を特定した。分析の結果,「サケマス」11 個体中 6 個体が交雑個体であった。交雑個体の複数の外部形態は両種の混合型を示した。

From 1970's, legged robots have attracted much attention of many researchers. In spite of this, it has been regarded that dynamically stable walking is very difficult to be tackled for any types of legged robots. For a trot gait for quadruped walking robots, we have proposed “the sway compensation trajectory”. This method utilizes a lateral, longitudinal, and vertical motion of a robot body to keep a zero moment point (ZMP) on a diagonal line between support legs. In this paper, we develop the sway compensation trajectory for a biped robot, and show that dynamically stable walking is realized. This method makes it quite easy to design stable ZMP and COG (center of gravity) trajectories, which have been regarded as a very complicated and delicate problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations and walking experiments by a humanoid robot HOAP-1, and YANBO-3.

The saddle height of a cycle road racer influences the competitive performance of the cyclist. Cyclists can adjust the saddle height carefully according to their kinesthetic sense while riding a bicycle. The saddle height control system we have developed consists of a saddle height control device and a measurement instrument for a surface electromyogram (SEMG). The evaluation criteria for the saddle height based on SEMG signals, which are measured from the leg muscles during pedaling exercise, are established. Our experiments indicate that the saddle height was controlled at a relatively low level regardless of the cycling level of the subjects. The effects of muscle fatigue due to pedaling exercise are suspected to affect these experimental results.

Antimalarial drugs, dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and artesunate (ATS), exhibit iron-dependent cytotoxicity in tumor cells. We hypothesized that erythrophagocytic uptake of heme-iron enhances the cytotoxicity of DHA and ATS. Erythrophagocytic (EP) treatment of the canine histiocytic sarcoma cell line DH82 markedly increased the cytotoxicity of DHA and ATS compared to controls. Succinyl acetone, an inhibitor of intracellular heme synthesis, decreased the cytotoxicity of DHA and ATS in normal cells, but this change was not observed in EP cells. These results suggest that exogenous heme derived from erythrocytes can enhance the cytotoxicity of DHA and ATS. Furthermore, our study suggests that heme could be a novel component of tumor treatment in veterinary medicine.

A database for the 3D structures of available compounds is essential for the virtual screening by molecular docking. We have developed the LigandBox database (http://ligandbox.protein.osaka-u.ac.jp/ligandbox/) containing four million available compounds, collected from the catalogues of 37 commercial suppliers, and approved drugs and biochemical compounds taken from KEGG_DRUG, KEGG_COMPOUND and PDB databases. Each chemical compound in the database has several 3D conformers with hydrogen atoms and atomic charges, which are ready to be docked into receptors using docking programs. The 3D conformations were generated using our molecular simulation program package, myPresto. Various physical properties, such as aqueous solubility (LogS) and carcinogenicity have also been calculated to characterize the ADME-Tox properties of the compounds. The Web database provides two services for compound searches: a property/chemical ID search and a chemical structure search. The chemical structure search is performed by a descriptor search and a maximum common substructure (MCS) search combination, using our program kcombu. By specifying a query chemical structure, users can find similar compounds among the millions of compounds in the database within a few minutes. Our database is expected to assist a wide range of researchers, in the fields of medical science, chemical biology, and biochemistry, who are seeking to discover active chemical compounds by the virtual screening.

明治以後,日本人は初めて本物の機械文明を学び始めた。その時,近代技術の科学的基礎が,日本人にとって非常にわかりにくいものだった。科学文化の欠除は,伝統思想,とくに技芸の観念で補われたと思われる。こうした歴史的体験は,日本における現在の工学教育にも大切な教訓となるかもしれない。

Industrial talc has been widely circulated in the world for a long time. The pure talc has little effects on humans, but inhalation of talc contaminated with asbestos can causes severe asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. Herein, we represent a case of lung cancer after occupational exposure to industrial talc in the rubber manufacturing industry.
