Juveniles were the foremost target of attempts to transform the Japanese people into imperial subjects during the late nineteenth century, with prominent intellectuals marshalling the influence of mass media in support of this goal. This essay examines the case of Shōnen’en (1888–1895), Japan’s first major juvenile magazine, exploring its use of science in shaping the identity of the modern imperial subject. With the turn to morals-driven education in the mid-Meiji period, the government sidelined science instruction in schools, considering it a Western import detrimental to developing loyalty to the emperor. However, at this time, Shōnen’en’s editor placed great emphasis on science, believing it to be not only compatible with, but also an important means of nurturing juvenile subjecthood. Drawing on an image of science that had taken shape during the eighteenth century, when scientific discovery came to be seen as an endeavor requiring both intellectual and physical prowess, Shōnen’en (Youth’s garden) offered Japanese adolescents an imaginary landscape in which they could envisage themselves as heroic and truth-seeking imperial officers. This examination of a magazine published before Japan’s modern international wars broadens our understanding of the role of science in mid-Meiji Japan by demonstrating how an influential publication used science to shape the identity of the modern imperial subject, and shows that these efforts predated the establishment of Japan’s formal empire.

Changes in stroke volume variation (SVV) and pulse pressure variation (PPV) in response to fluid infusion were experimentally evaluated during vecuronium infusion and sevoflurane anesthesia in 5 adult, mechanically ventilated, euvolemic, beagle dogs. Sequential increases in central venous pressure (CVP; 3–7[baseline], 8–12, 13–17, 18–22 and 23–27 mmHg) were produced by infusing lactated Ringer’s solution and 6% hydroxyethyl starch solution. Heart rate (beats/min), right atrial pressure (RAP, mmHg), pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP, mmHg), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP, mmHg), transpulmonary thermodilution cardiac output (TPTDCO, L/min), stroke volume (SV, ml/beat), arterial blood pressure (ABP, mmHg), extravascular lung water (EVLW, ml), pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI, calculated), SVV (%), PPV (%) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR, dynes/sec/cm5) were determined at each predetermined CVP range. Heart rate (P=0.019), RAP (P<0.001), PAP (P<0.001), PCWP (P<0.001), TPTDCO (P=0.009) and SV (P=0.04) increased and SVR (P<0.001), SVV (P<0.001) and PPV (P<0.001) decreased associate with each stepwise increase in CVP. Arterial blood pressure, EVLW, PVPI and the arterial partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide did not change. The changes in SVV and PPV directly reflected the fluid load and the minimum threshold values for detecting fluid responsiveness were SVV≥11% and PPV≥7% in dogs.

横浜市においてイロハモミジ(Acer palmatum),ヤブツバキ(Camellia japonica)及びヤマザクラ(Cerasus jamasakura)を用いた地域性に配慮した緑化工を実施するために,葉緑体DNA情報を利用した地域性判定技術の開発を行った。地域性判定に用いる葉緑体DNA領域を検索するために,これら3樹種の新鮮葉(もしくは越冬芽)を東北から南九州の地域で網羅的に採集し,葉緑体DNAの遺伝子間領域及びイントロンの合計16領域のDNA多型を検索した。その結果,横浜市の地域性を判定できるDNA領域として,イロハモミジはtrnV-trnM遺伝子間領域,ヤブツバキはtrnT-trnL遺伝子間領域,ヤマザクラはtrnH-trnK遺伝子間領域を見出した。関東地区の種苗会社で育成されている地域性が不明なこれら3樹種の苗木から,本技術を用いて横浜市の地域性に適合した苗木を選抜し,外構植栽に用いることができた。また,本技術は3樹種の横浜市だけでなく,東北から南九州の地域性も判定することが可能な技術であることから,今後はこれら3樹種の地域性判定への応用にも期待できると考えられた。

目的 産後1か月の褥婦における睡眠と主観的精神健康感の実態を観察し,初産婦と経産婦別にその関連を検討することであった。方法 対象はA病院で分娩し1か月健診で質問票に回答し,重回帰分析で用いた従属変数と独立変数の回答に欠損がなく,精神疾患既往のない457人の褥婦であった。属性,生活環境,睡眠状況,精神的・身体的健康を初産婦と経産婦で比較した後,VAS法による精神健康感の4指標(憂うつ感,不安感,意欲低下,焦燥感)を従属変数,睡眠満足度,睡眠時間,睡眠問題の有無,就床時刻の規則性と睡眠関連習慣5項目を独立変数とした一般化線形モデルによる重回帰分析を行った。結果 初産婦は睡眠時間が短く,就床時刻が遅く,「目覚めたらすぐ起きる」,「寝室でのテレビや仕事」という睡眠関連習慣2項目が不良であった。身体症状では「疲労感」と「耳鳴」が高率であった。経産婦では入眠潜時が長く夜間覚醒回数が多く精神的健康では「焦燥感」が強く,「頭痛」が高率であった。初産婦・経産婦ともに睡眠満足度が精神健康感4指標と,初産婦では「睡眠問題有り」が憂うつ感と不安感に,「就床時刻の不規則性」が不安感に,「目覚めたらすぐ起床」が焦燥感に,「昼寝は3時までに30分以内」が不安感と意欲低下に関連していた。経産婦では「就床時刻の不規則性」が不安感,意欲低下,焦燥感と負の関連にあり,「目覚めたらすぐ起床」が意欲低下に関連していた。結論 産直後の睡眠問題は見過ごされがちであるが精神健康感への関連が示唆されるため,妊娠中からの睡眠教育と産後健診での睡眠評価が必要である。

In the past few years, there has been an increasing number of works on negotiation dialog. These studies mainly focus on situations where interlocutors work cooperatively to agree on a mutual objective that can fulfill each of their own requirements. However, in real-life negotiation, such situations do not happen all the time, and participants can tell lies to gain an advantage. In this research, we propose a negotiation dialog management system that detects when a user is lying and a dialog behavior for how the system should react when faced with a lie. We design our system for a living habits consultation scenario, where the system tries to persuade users to adopt healthy living habits. We show that we can use the partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) to model this conversation and use reinforcement learning to train the system’s policy. Our experimental results demonstrate that the dialog manager considering deceptive states outperformed a dialog manager without this consideration in terms of the accuracy of action selection, and improved the true success rate of the negotiation in the healthcare consultation domain.

We describe Parakonarus kajii sp. nov. from near Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. This is the first record of Parakonarus from the North Pacific. As members in this genus show great sexual dimorphism, we checked our male and female specimens for conspecificity by using partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The two individuals differed by two nucleotide substitutions in 661 nt (0.3% K2P distance), indicating they are the same species. This species closely resembles P. kopure reported from New Zealand, but differs in having the ventral process on the chelipedal carpus longer than wide, the inner comb-row on the chelipedal propodus composed of 16 setae, and the dactylus and unguis of pereopods 4–6 fused in the male; and the carpi of pereopods 2 and 3 without a ventrodistal spiniform seta, the propodal palm of the cheliped with two inner simple setae at the insertion of the dactylus, and article 2 of the maxillipedal palp with one mid-outer and one outer distal simple setae in the female. On the inner surface of the chelipeds in male P. kajii, we observed an elongate plate-like structure that could be a reduced ischium.

日本では 2006 年度以降, 厚生労働省により高齢者の 「虐待等による死亡例」 が調査されるようになった. 警察庁も 2007 年以降, 犯罪の直接の動機・原因が 「介護・看病疲れ」 の事件数を公表している. 2000 年に介護保険が導入されて以降, 介護サービスの充実が目指されているが, これらの調査によれば, 親族による, 介護をめぐって発生した高齢者の殺害や心中の事件が顕著に減少したという傾向は見られない.このような事件を防止するためには, 介護される者に加え, 介護する者へも支援を行うこと, 特に介護者のうつを早期に発見し必要な支援を行えるようにすること, BPSD への対応について具体的なアドバイスを行うことが必要である.また, 介護を引き受けたからといって社会から孤立することなく, 大切な人々との絆を大切にしつつ, 無理なく介護を行うことができるような介護者支援システムの構築, 法基盤の整備が早急の課題である.

This paper aims to grasp the “markets” in postwar Tokyo in diachronic perspective. The previous studies have tended to deal “markets” as extraordinary spaces only in immediate postwar years. But this paper will try to deal them as ordinary spaces by clarification of the basis of their existence. Especially, I found the censuses about the “markets” which have not been known so much, and consider the similar commercial spaces in previous or next era such as stalls, retail markets, tenant buildings. This paper will reconsider the significances of “markets” through these works and the consideration of my former paper.
