The amalgam restoration is regarded as the simplest and best method for the mass treatment of earlier carious lesions in pre-ventive dentistry but there are still some practical problems that remain unsolved.More efficient technics is to be divised and also the suppresson of mercury absorption by the operators is the important point in such severe exposure to mercury.This investigation was designed to improve the usual procedure by combining the use of an mechanical amalgamator and pre-prepared amalgam kept in a vacuum bottle containing dry ice.The air turbine (Air Dent Unit) was also applied in full through this experiment to reduce the cutting time and the pain or uncomfortable feeling of the children.1) The mechanical amalgamator which can mix mercury and alloy even at the weight ratio of 6 to 5 involed no need to sequeeze out mercury. Therefore, the time for restoration was markedly reduced to 71.5 sec.in comparison with 150 sec.in the routine manual procedure when the mixing time was set constant as 40 sec.in both methods.2) Urinary mercury excretion of three mixing operators following constantly mixing amalgam far 50 min.showed on the average the increase of 80 μ g Hg per day in the usual procedure, while using amalgamator, it only increased by 15 μ g Hg per day.3) After shaking with the amalgamator, the amalgam enough for three treatment was put in a small polyethylene tube and heat-sealed and instantly researved in a vacuum bottle containing dry ice.On the next day after 24 hours, each small tube was pulled out and kept at room temperature for halt an minute to wait softening and then the amalgam was applied.4) Physical properties of the reserved amalgam were tested with methods approved in J.I.S.(Japan Industrial Standards) and no significant differences were found.5) The time required for treating one caries tooth was 10 min.in the routine procedure, whlie combining the use of Air Dent Unit and pre-prepared amalgam reserved in dry ice bottle, it was exceedingly shortened to 1 min.and 49.5 sec.6) As a field experiment, 80 school children were successively treated by two dentists by this devised procedures in one day.The over-all time needed for the treatment of one children was 144.9 sec.on the average.7) Thus the mass amalgam restoration in preventive dentistry might be applied with high efficiency by our devised procedures.

弾性表面波(SAW)フィルタは,携帯電話の重要な部品の一つである.SAW共振子型フィルタは,すだれ状電極(IDT)の両側に構成されたグレーティング反射器内で閉じ込められた二つのモードを利用して実現されるため,挿入損が小さい.Shear horizontal(SH)波は,基板端面でモード変換なしに完全反射する.従来の共振子型フィルタはIDTの両側にグレーティング反射器を必要としたが,筆者らはこのグレーティング反射器の代わりにSH-SAWの端面での反射を利用したグレーティング反射器の不要な小形な共振子フィルタを実現した.

"Science and Technology." We are accustomed to accept this phrase as a single integrated concept, though the words "science" and "technology" have rather independent meanings in history. This is one of the remarkable characteristics of our time, now in a big transition. Since the 1970s, a newly emerging research area, science and technology studies, or science, technology and society, say "STS", has become evident. Scholarly activity in this area is increasing, but it is not yet as clearly defined as many established disciplines. Some of this research is likely an expression of critical concerns about contemporary science and technology and its social consequences, while others are often policy studies linked with government administrations. But, in any case, the important and actual concern of studies concentrates on the study of science and technology in a social context, or in social relations. As early as the 1930s, some important works had appeared to study the politics of science and technology. During World War II, wartime mobilization of scientists and engineers gave a new social character to science and technology. As a result, the social relations of science became an important issue among many scientists. Nevertheless, the recent increase of interest in STS has some special meanings. The situation is much different from the past, when the corresponding research was supported by a few scientists with their personal endeavors. On the other hand, while STS studies came to be accepted by the scientific community as a newly established discipline, the conception of science and technology has changed from those views prevalent in the 1930s and 1940s to the current conceptions; i. e. from an enlightened view to a relativist view. Thus, there are very diverse views on the nature of the progress of science and technology, in contrast to older views, in which progress was automatically accepted as good. This very diversification is bringing a kind of fancy goods store, or an intellectual climate of "anything goes", into the research. While this situation is an expression of activity in the emerging state of learning, some improvement will be necessary in the further development of these new studies. Once, this writer has published a monograph, "Science, Technology, and Society: a Japanese Perspective, 1993, IC2 Institute University of Texas at Austin", to express his opinion on these problems. He also proposed a framework to promote research activity in this important area. This series of articles composes an improved Japanese version of the monograph. This writer would select two parts from the four in original English version, and would complement them with some expla-nations for readers who are not always belonging to any science and technology community. Part one of this series offers a general outlook for STS and a proposal for a framework for the integration of existing ideas and methods to give a fundamental methodology of STS. Part two is to comprehend twentieth century science and technology as an application of that methodology. This is not a description of twentieth century science and technology itself, but a research program for further investigation. This article has first two chapters of the series: Chapter one addresses the need for STS and the key question of the integration of science and technology. Characteristics of modern science are transferred into the modern technology, and with thus acquired features of science and technology the modern society has been largely influenced. This is a particular condition of contemporary STS research. Chapter two summarizes the results of STS research including some historical description. History, philosophy, and sociology provide core methods in most STS studies in programs of universities in the United States and Europe. But these disciplines are widely diversified. The problem is in deciding what parts of these vast areas of knowledge are essential. Efforts to integrate multidisciplinary achievements are also discussed.

タイ国におけるトウモロコシ畑での Eiphorbia geniculataの生態を解明するための基礎的知見として、光合成および蒸散作用における特徴をトウモロコシおよび Euphorbia hirtaと比較した。 1) C_3植物であるE. geniculataは光合成の光飽和点がC_4植物であるトウモロコシやE. hirtaよりもはるかに低く、そして強光下での党かげの光合成作用(Ap)はトウモロコシ、 E. hirtaでは気孔抵抗(r_s)によって限定されるのに対して、 E. geniculataでは葉肉抵抗(r_m)によって限定された。 2)遮光条件下で育てると E. genisulataの党かげの光合成作用およびその光飽和点はトウモロコシに比べて著しく低下した。見かけの光合成の減少は E. geniculataではr_mの増加によるが、トウモロコシではr_mおよびr_sの両方の増加に起因することが認められた。 3) E. geniculataの要水量は通常、トウモロコシの2倍以上であるが、遮光処理により約3倍に増大した。 4) E. geniculataの見かけの光合成作用は、目長時問が増加するに従って減少する傾向を示した。また強光下の蒸散量 (Tr)は12時間日長で最大となり、Ap/Tr比は最低となった。たお、暗黒化に伴う気孔閉鎖は8時間日長区が12、16時間日長区よりもはるかに迅速であった。

The purpose of this study was to identify drugs with a risk of causing Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS),toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) and the risk factors involved.From the CARPIS (Case Reports of Adverse Drug Reactions and Poisoning Information System) database,which contains 40,000 case reports of adverse drug reactions,we determined 258 cases (case group) matching the criteria for SJS/TEN/DIHS stated by the Japanese Ministry of Health,Labour and Welfare.We also selected 774 control cases (control group) which were sex- and age- matched (±1)with the case group.Next,various data were compared between the case group and the control group and the results analyzed statistically.In this regard,logistic regression analysis identified 2 drugs - carbamazepine (odds ratio : OR=5.21,95% confidence interval : 95% CI=2.68-10.06)and acetaminophen (OR=3.41,95% CI=1.12-10.51)that were associated with a significant elevation of the risk of SJS and TEN.Further,mexiletine hydrochloride (OR=205.48,95% CI=28.04-2330.89)and diaminodiphenylsulfone (OR=981.56,95% CI=94.84-25212.82),were found to be associated with a significant elevation of the risk of DIHS.By identifying certain risk factors for SJS,TEN and DIHS,the results of the present study would be useful in preventing severe drug reactions.

This paper describes the development of the display that controls the light and shadow cast on the floor using illumination lamp or natural sunlight as a light source. Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (PDLC) film that can switch from opaque to transparent rapidly is used in each pixel of the display. The display is intended to install in ceiling or window and artificially generates images of shadow on the ground or wall just like sunshine filtering through foliage. Our concept is to develop the display that can appeal to person's instinct as an interactive art installation.

A new antibiotic with hypolipidemic activity, ascofuranone, C23H29C1O5, and related substance, ascofuranol, C23H31C1O5, were isolated from the filter cake of the fermented broth of Ascochyta viciae LIBERT, an ascochlorin-producing fungus, and their structures were elucidated. They possess 3-substituted-5-chloro-orcylaldehyde moiety with novel sesquiterpenyl side chains.

Ascofuranone significantly reduced serum lipid levels of rats fed with normal diet 6 hours after a single oral administration of 108 mg/kg. When the antibiotic was orally given for consecutive 10 days to normolipidemic rats, the treatment resulted in marked reduction of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and free fatty acids without affecting organ weight gain, serum total protein, albumin/globulin ratio and serum transaminases. Reduction was also noted with cardiac cholesterol content but liver total sterol and fecal sterol excretion were unchanged. Acute toxicity of ascofuranone is weak to mice and rats and the antibiotic did not induce hepatomegaly which is the main side effect of a positive control agent, ethyl-p-chlorophenoxyisobutyrate.

Mouse myeloid leukemia cells, Ml, were induced to differentiate into phagocytes by treatment with ascofuranone (AF). AF also induced differentiation of human promyelocytic leukemia HL60 cells and human erythroid leukemia K562 cells into granulocytes and erythrocytes, as detected by nitroblue tetrazolium reducing activity and benzidine staining, respectively. The antibiotic enhanced acetate incorporation of K562 cells. The increase was not observed with the cells of HL60 and two human B lymphoma lines, Daudi and Raji. The increase was diminished by the addition of a glycolysis inhibitor, deoxyglucose. Inhibitors of respiration, antimycin and sodium azide, also enhanced acetate incorporation of K562 cells specifically, which was diminished by the addition of deoxyglucose. Furthermore, antimycin induced differentiation of K562 and HL60 cells. These results suggest a possible relationship between cell differentiation and inhibition of respiration.

Ascofuranone demonstrated antitumor activity against FM3A murine mammary carcinoma, implanted in the peritoneal cavity of syngeneic mice, C3H/He. It was more effective by treatment prior to implantation than by that after implantation. Treatment with ascofuranone also increased splenic cytotoxicity and phagocytic activity of host animal cells. Moreover, ascofuranone induced inflammatory cells in the peritoneal cavity which are mainly composed of polymorpho-nuclear leukocytes and macrophages. These cells are more potent in cytotoxicity against FM3A cells than with resident peritoneal cells. The antitumor activity of ascofuranone was suppressed by ip administration of silica, just prior to tumor implantation. These results suggest that the prophylactic antitumor activity of ascofuranone is expressed through the activation of phagocytes. Ascofuranone also suppressed pulmonary metastasis of B16 melanoma and Lewis lung carcinoma. Treatment after tumor implantaion failed to suppress the metastasis. Single treatment of ascofuranone 4 days prior to implantation decreased the metastasis of Lewis lung carcinoma but not that of B16, whereas single treatment of ascofuranone 24 hours prior to the tumor implantation decreased the metastasis of B16 but not that of Lewis lung carcinoma.

We propose a THz patch antenna, in which THz ac current is fed by intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). The radiation power of the antenna for three different feed positions is calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method. We predict that the antenna will radiate sub-milliwatt terahertz waves with high radiation efficiency of over 20%. The maximum radiation power will depend on the position of the feed. We also show that the radiation characteristics of the antenna are described well by the equivalent inductance-capacitance-resistance circuit model.

We theoretically study the phase relaxation of excitons in doped single-walled carbon nanotubes caused by elastic scattering between an exciton and an electron. Our calculation of the spectral linewidth, that is the inverse of the scattering rate, demonstrates that this dephasing process is unexpectedly suppressed in doped single-walled carbon nanotubes, giving rise to anomalous nonlinear behavior as a function of the electron density. A detailed investigation reveals that the logarithmic correction of the exciton self-energy plays a critical role in the exciton-carrier scattering dynamics.
