現代社会は知識と情報にあふれており,われわれはこれを活用しきれていない。知のコンピューティングは,知の創造,蓄積と流通を促進し,人間の科学的発見を加速し,人々が賢く生きるための仕組みづくりを目指す活動である。本稿では,背景として情報科学技術の発展と課題を述べた後,知のコンピューティングの仕組みとしての社会実装イメージを提案する。さらに,人と機械の創造的協働を実現するための研究開発について考察し,最後に,広範な社会的インパクトをもつ科学技術の社会受容に関する取り組みについて紹介する。

Objective: The objective was to estimate the inorganic arsenic (iAs) intake of the general Japanese adult population by a probabilistic approach. Methods: Bioaccessible iAs concentrations in rice (n=56) and hijiki (n=32), the two food items that are the major iAs sources for the Japanese, were measured by liquid chromatography-ICP mass spectrometry. The concentration in cooked rice was estimated from the measured concentration in a raw rice sample while taking into consideration the loss of iAs during cooking. The iAs concentration in hijiki was measured using soaked hijiki samples. The daily consumption of cooked rice and soaked hijiki was taken from published data. The distribution profile of daily iAs intake was estimated by multiplying the bioaccesible iAs concentration in cooked rice and soaked hijiki samples by the amount of these samples consumed daily, which were randomly extracted according to the respective distributions. This process was repeated 10,000 times. Results: The distribution profiles of iAs concentration in rice and hijiki were normal and log-normal, respectively, and those of the amount of cooked rice and soaked hijiki consumed were beta and log-normal, respectively. The daily bioaccessible iAs intake values were estimated to be 19 and 59 μg/day at 50 and 95 percentile. At 50 percentile iAs intake, the contributions from rice and hijiki were estimated to be equal, whereas the contribution from hijiki increased with the estimated total daily iAs intake. Conclusions: The iAs intakes of Japanese subjects estimated in previous duplicated portion studies were fairly consistent with the present estimation. Moreover, it was confirmed that the cancer risk derived from dietary iAs intake of the general Japanese population was not negligible.

The recent advent of improved low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) therapy has promoted interest in clinical implantology. It has been reported that LLLI on bony implant sites might have positive effects on the integration of implants. The biostimulatory effect of cell proliferation and bone formation by LLLI has been investigated, but little is known about the molecular basis of biostimulatory mechanisms. Since LLLI will be useful to support implant therapy, it is important to elucidate the mechanism of the biostimulatory effect of LLLI on bone formation. We previously constructed the cDNA library of mouse osteoblastic cells (MC 3 T 3-E 1), which enhanced gene expression by LLLI using a subtracted gene cloning technology. In the present study, we further analyzed the DNA nucleotide sequence of gene clones, and focused on a gene clone designated MCL-174. The nucleotide sequence of MCL-174 insert was determined and assessed in the standard nucleotide-nucleotide BLAST (blastn) homology-search using NCBI DNA databases. DNA nucleotide sequences of clone MCL-174 inserted DNA exhibited 99% homology with Mus musculus annexin Ⅲ gene. Reverse-transcription PCR analysis showed that the mRNA level was enhanced by LLLI. These findings suggest that LLLI may enhance mRNA transcription and play a role in stimulating proliferation of osteoblasts through the enhancement of annexin Ⅲ gene expression. Annexin Ⅲ was detected in secretory ameloblasts and odontoblasts, and it was thought to be involved in the regulation of cell calcium. These findings suggest that the biostimulatory effect of LLLI on bone formation may relate through gene expression of annexin Ⅲ.

超大深度地下開発のアプローチとなる超大深度立坑は,その重要性を再認識されつつある.しかし,国内石炭産業の縮小に伴い,深度1,000m級の立坑はほぼ20年以上施工されていない.筆者らは超大深度立坑技術の継承と,定量的な立坑設計技術の確立を目的として,過去に施工された超大深度立坑の技術文献調査,およびかつて施工に従事された技術者からの聞き取り調査を実施し,立坑工事において発生する蓋然性の高い崩壊形態を調査した.その結果,立坑における崩壊のほとんどは高抜けと異常地圧による覆工破損の二つに分類されることが明らかとなった.さらに,その発生状況を検証したところ,この二つの現象は同じ原因により発生するものと判断された.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the indications of the strength and health. BMD measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was compared with that measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE). Limbs were removed from horses that had been euthanized for reasons not associated with this study. Sixteen limbs (left and right metacarpals and metatarsals) from 4 horses were used to compare BMD as measured by QCT with those measured by DXA and RBAE. There was a strong correlation between BMD values measured by QCT and those measured by DXA (R2=0.85); correlation was also observed between values obtained by QCT and those obtained by RBAE (R2=0.61). To investigate changes in BMD with age, 37 right metacarpal bones, including 7 from horses euthanized because of fracture were examined by QCT. The BMD value of samples from horses dramatically increased until 2 years of age and then plateaued, a pattern similar to the growth curve. The BMD values of bone samples from horses euthanized because of fracture were within the population range, and samples of morbid fracture were not included. The relationship between BMD and age provides a reference for further quantitative studies of bone development and remodeling. Quantitative measurement of BMD using QCT may have great potential for the evaluation of bone biology for breeding and rearing management.

The speed of change in pain intensity as measured by the visual analog scale (VAS) was investigated in patients with acute low back pain (LBP). Each patient was initially treated with oral nonsteroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Clinical outcome was determined by patient self–assessment on the day of the last visit and classified into four groups: healed, improved, marginal, and unidentified. Data were analyzed for 131 cases in the healed (n=55), improved (n=62), and marginal (n=14) groups. VAS values at the first and last visits were denoted as VAS–f and VAS–l, respective­ly. ∆VAS, the speed of change in the VAS value per day was calculat­ed by dividing the change in the VAS value by the number of days elapsed. The initial ∆VAS (∆VAS–i) and the ∆VAS throughout the study (∆VAS–t) were calculated between the first and second visits and between the first and last visits, respective­ly. VAS–f was not relevant to outcome, while VAS–l was strongly cor­related with outcome, as expected. Both ∆VAS–i and ∆VAS–t were significantly correlated with outcome. Patients in the healed and improved groups showed higher ∆VAS–i values as compared with those in the marginal group. A ∆VAS–i over 5 mm/day predicted favorable outcomes. The ∆VAS–i can be regarded as a predictor of outcome in acute LBP. Speedy pain relief should be planned for patients with acute LBP with a low ∆VAS–i to prevent a change to chronic LBP.

In sub-Saharan Africa, the demand for higher rice production continues to grow rapidly. Although there is a huge potential for increasing rice production through expansion of the rice cultivation area in wetlands, iron (Fe) toxicity tends to occur and consequently results in low rice yield. Development and deployment of varieties tolerant to Fe toxicity is one of the practical options to overcome this constraint. Several tolerant varieties have been developed through conventional breeding but progress in breeding has been generally slow mainly due to large genotype × environment interaction and field heterogeneity, which make rice selection ineffective. In addition, there are no valid managed-stress screening protocols which are highly efficient and that can predict rice performance in the diverse target environments of West Africa. Many O. glaberrima accessions have superior tolerance, but only a few of them have been utilized in breeding programs. The known quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to Fe toxicity, have not been used for marker-assisted selection (MAS), as they gave small effects with a large confidence interval. Accelerating rice breeding efficiency for tolerance to Fe toxicity requires establishment of reliable screening protocols, use of O. glaberrima accessions as donors, identification of large-effect QTLs and MAS using such QTLs. This paper reviews the past and current efforts in West Africa to develop new varieties with superior tolerance to Fe toxicity.

It is important to understand the interfacial properties of the nanotube/metal contacts because, in the case of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (NT-FETs), the FET action is dominated by the Schottky barrier formed at the interface of the source contact. In this study, we have studied the interfacial properties from the electrical characterization of NT-FETs. First, the conduction pass in the vicinity of the contact electrodes has been investigated using a multi-terminal device. Then, the relation between conduction property of NT-FETs and work function of the contact metals has been investigated. The interfacial band structure has been discussed in terms of the temperature dependence of the drain current.

In this paper a multi-linear regression analysis is developed to predict continuous cooling (CCT) diagrams in low carbon Nb and Nb–Mo microalloyed steels. The inputs to the analysis include the weight percentage of alloying elements, the prior austenite grain size, the retained strain and the cooling rate. To develop the model, 11 steels with different combinations of Nb and Mo were considered. In some cases, the resulting equations have been validated with external data from the literature. Additionally, the model was also employed to predict hardness and ferrite grain size with the aim of providing a tool to link microstructural features with mechanical property predictions. Both Nb and Mo additions promote a reduction of ferrite and bainite start temperatures, where the effect is more pronounced for Nb in the bainitic region. Both microalloying elements contribute to an increase in hardness and a refinement of the microstructure.

A rapid and simple method to measure the concentration of 90Sr in water by measuring β-rays from 90Y was presented. Under the situation that 90Sr/90Y, 134Cs and 137Cs are the main radionuclides included in the water sample, only β-rays from 90Y can transmit through 1.5-mm-thick polyethylene. From this fact, it is possible to measure β-rays from 90Y using a β-ray detector, such as the GM-counter, set beneath the 1.5-mm-thick bottom of the water bottle containing the sample with 90Sr/90Y. The acrylic resin collimator having 0 cm, 1.00 cm, 1.50 cm or 3.00 cm diameter was made to detect β-rays at the fixed region of the GM-counter used. Contributions from bremsstrahlung produced by β-rays and γ-rays from radionuclides such as 134Cs and 137Cs/137mBa are removed by subtracting the count rate measured with a 1.00 cm acrylic resin collimator without a hole as the background count rate. The developed method was studied using the bottle routinely used at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. It was confirmed that the developed method can be applied to measure the 90Sr concentration in water to the order of several Bq/cm3 if 134Cs and 137Cs concentrations are less than or equal to the 90Sr/90Y concentration.

Menopausal symptoms, bone loss, changes in lipid profiles and reduction of insulin sensitivity due to an abrupt decrease in circulating estrogen level are well known in women during the menopausal transition. On the other hand, the effect of androgen on women’s health has not been fully elucidated. Circulating levels of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) gradually decrease with age in postmenopausal women, although transient increases have been observed during the menopausal transition. High testosterone level has been suggested to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased triglyceride, insulin resistance and increase in the risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Circulating DHEA-S level does not affect the risk of cardiovascular disease, mortality or lipid profiles in women. Female androgen insufficiency, which is characterized by the presence of reduced androgen level in circulation, leads to an impairment in sexual drive, reduced libido, depressed mood, and signs and symptoms of limited androgen exposure such as decreased muscle mass, reduced bone density and decreased sense of well-being. An appropriate level of androgen may play important roles in metabolic, psychological and sexual functions in women.
