The effects of estimating their father's character on their sense of eating with the family was investigated by questionnaire studies for junior and senior high school and university students who were in the psychologically weaning stage.Although male students showed the tendency to accept the dignity for their father as a good characteristic according to their development, female students showed the tendency to regard it as an unfavorable characteristic. In the case of female students, their sense of eating with the family was shown to be more influenced by more complicated factors than the male students, i.e., pleasant memories with father, frequency of eating alone through their daily life and evaluation of their father's life. Althought male students had many pleasant memories with their father qualitatively, female students made much of it not only qualitatively but quantitatively.The most important factor that influences their sense of eating with families was thought to be the affirmative sense for their father through respect and friendliness.The frequency of eating alone was correlated with unpleasant memories with families and with a sense of solitary in the family.

In order to improve the use efficiency of a cover crop, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa R., HV), and supplemental chemical N fertilizer, N release and uptake patterns from HV, fast-release N fertilizer (Fast), and slow-release N fertilizer (Slow) in fresh market tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production were investigated using the 15N-labeling method. In the incubation of soil-added N at two mix rates, 20% Fast + 80% Slow (FS) and 100% Slow (S), a large amount of inorganic N, mainly NH4+-N, was released by FS in 4 weeks. Tomato ‘House momotaro’ was grown in 1/2000 a Wagner pots incorporating such N fertilizer and 15N-labeled HV residue (30 g DW/pot, about 200 kg N·ha-1). Plant biomass in tomato grown with HV was larger than that grown without HV. HV-derived N (Ndfhv) was taken up by the tomatoes mainly until 4 weeks after transplant (WAT). The uptake amount of Ndfhv was the same in the pot with HV-FS and HV-S. The rate of N uptake derived from HV to total N uptake in tomato plants (%Ndfhv) was 43% in HV-S, higher than that in HV-FS (34%) in 4 WAT; however, such a difference disappeared after 4 WAT. N uptake by tomato plants continued until 12 WAT. Based on these results, HV acted as a fast-release fertilizer. There was competition in N uptake between chemical fertilizer N and HV-released N in the early stage of tomato cultivation. A large amount of chemical fertilizer tended to suppress the uptake of Ndfhv. N uptake by tomato plant continued until the late stage. These results can be applied to establish a suitable combination of HV and chemical fertilizer for tomato production.

Ornamental cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. acephala f. tricolor) cultivars of Japanese seed companies are grown in Europe. Unpleasant odors from cut flowers have become a problem in this region. We investigated volatiles emitted from cut flowers of ‘Hatsubeni’ and ‘Haresugata’, two major Japanese ornamental cabbage cultivars in Europe, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Dimethyl disulfide was identified as the major odor-active component emerging from plants as well as from vase water. Vase water was a major source of unpleasant scents, and odor development was prevented by changing the water frequently. We tested the effects of potential suppressors of dimethyl disulfide emission from cut flowers applied to vase water. Cyprodinil, an inhibitor of the synthesis of dimethyl disulfide from methionine, and aminooxyacetic acid, an inhibitor of enzymatic reactions involved in dimethyl disulfide biosynthesis, did not show any effects. In contrast, isothiazolinonic germicide, a cut-flower preservative, inhibited the rot of cut ends of flower stems and reduced dimethyl disulfide emission from cut flowers by 30–40%. In addition, this germicide significantly inhibited emissions from vase water. Isothiazolinonic germicide is a promising candidate inhibitor of unpleasant scents from cut flowers of ornamental cabbage.

伊豆諸島三宅島にすむヤマガラについて,1975年と1976年の繁殖期に,親鳥が巣内雛にもつてくる食物の中に秋冬季に貯えておいた木の実がどの位含まれているかを調べた。食物の確認は,巣箱の近くのブラインドの中から撮影した写真に基づいて行なった。得られた結果は次のとおりである。1)雛に持ってきた木の実の中味はすべて,スダジイの実の中味と認められた。そして,これらは,常態ではこの時期に得られるものではないので,すべて秋冬季に貯えておいたものであると考えられた。2)雛に与える食物中に占める貯蔵食物の割合は,運搬回数によっても運搬個数に基づいても,調査総数の5%前後にすぎなかった。したがって,貯蔵食物がひなの生長に大きな役割を果したとは考えられない。3)前年秋のシイの実のなり具合がよくなかった1975年と,よかった1976年とでは,貯蔵食物の占める割合に有意な差は認められなかった。4)その原因は,この島のヤマガラでは秋に貯えておいたシイの実の大部分を冬季に利用してしまうため,雛を育てる時期には年による著しい違いをもたらす程多くの実が残っていないらしい,ということにあると考えられた。

Signal-transducing adaptor protein-2 (STAP-2) was recently identified as a novel adaptor protein and is a family of STAP adaptor protein and has a variety of functions in cellular signal transductions. Especially STAP-2 has a crucial role in immune systems by controlling cytokine signal transduction. STAP-2 functionally interacts with STAT3 through its YXXQ motif and enhances STAT3 transcriptional activation. In contrast, STAP-2 interacts with STAT5 through its PH and SH2-like domains and decreases STAT5 activity. Importantly, STAP-2 also binds to MyD88 and IKK-α/β and regulates LPS/TLR4 signaling. Moreover, STAP-2 interacts with Epstein-Barr virus-derived LMP1 and modulates LMP1-mediated NF-κB signaling. More importantly, experiments using STAP-2 deficient mice showed that STAP-2 modulated several T-cell functions. T-cells from STAP-2 deficient mice showed enhanced integrin-mediated cell adhesion to fibronectin. Furthermore STAP-2-deficient T-cells show reduced chemotaxis toward SDF-1α. These accumulated evidences indicate that novel adaptor protein STAP-2 plays an important modulator role in both of innate and adaptive immune systems.

12歳齢, 未去勢雄のヨークシャー・テリアが, 尿の混濁, 排便障害, 腰背部を中心とした体幹の非そう痒性脱毛を主訴として来院した。身体検査により乳房の腫大, 包皮の下垂, 前立腺肥大を認め, 腹腔内及び鼠経部皮下に腫大した陰睾と思われる腫瘤が認められた。摘出後の病理組織学検査の結果, 摘出した腹腔内腫瘤はセルトリー細胞種, 鼠経部皮下腫瘤はセルトリー細胞種とセミノーマの混合腫瘍であった。腫瘍の摘出後に臨床症状の改善が認められたことから, 非炎症性非そう痒性の脱毛は精巣腫瘍によるエストロジェン過多が原因であると考えられた。

The aim of the present article is to review the cardioprotective properties of cannabinoids, with an emphasis on the signaling pathways involved. Cannabinoids have been reported to protect against ischemia in rat isolated hearts, as well as in rats and mice in vivo. Although these effects have been observed mostly with a pre-treatment of a cannabinoid, we report that the selective CB2-receptor agonist JWH133 is able to reduce infarct size when administered either before ischemia, during the entire ischemic period, or just upon reperfusion. Little is known about the signaling pathways involved in these cardioprotective effects. Likely candidates include protein kinase C (PKC) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) since they are activated during ischemia-reperfusion and contribute to the protective effect ischemic preconditioning. The use of pharmacological inhibitors suggests that PKC, p38 MAPK, and p42/p44 MAPK (ERK1/2) contribute to the protective effect of cannabinoids. In addition, perfusion with JWH133 in healthy hearts caused an increase in both p38 MAPK phosphorylation level and activity, whereas the CB1-receptor agonist ACEA was associated with an increase in the phosphorylation status of both ERK1 and ERK2 without any change in activity. During ischemia, both agonists doubled p38 MAPK activity, whereas ERK1/2 phosphorylation level and activity during reperfusion were enhanced only by the CB1-receptor agonist. Finally, although nitric oxide (NO) was shown to exert both pro and anti-apoptotic effects on cardiomyocytes, with an apparently controversial effect on myocardial survival, our data suggest that NO may contribute to the cardioprotective effect of some cannabinoids.

The authors have developed a solenoid model coil to stabilize the power system in superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system with the aim of drastically reducing system cost. The single solenoid model coil is designed with the rated current, maximum magnetic field and coil charge rates equivalent to those of a practical 100 MW/15 kWh-class SMES using multi-pole solenoid coils. In addition, the coil is characterized by the use of a stabilized Al-NbTi CIC conductor that has a graded structure, layered winding and a high magnetic field with a compact design. To verify coil performance, several tests such as a the measurement of rated current and AC loss, high-speed pulse operation, coil quenching, and insulation characteristics were conducted using a model coil at Kyushu Electric's Imajuku testing center. Test results proved that the SMES model coil performs as well as the initially designed coil, while doing so at a drastically reduced cost.

Physical strength and performance test (PSPT) results for elite junior divers selected annually in the diving competition finals of the National Junior High School Selection Swim Meets (1998∼2005) were studied. It was found that the relationship between the PSPT results and the competition scores compared from the viewpoint of the annual results were as follows: the PSPT results for both genders indicated gradual improvements among male and female springboard divers, and male and female platform divers (ANOVA: p<0.05). The competition scores for springboard diving also indicated gradual improvements as mentioned above. Various athletic abilities, such as the flexibility of the shoulder joints, body tucks, etc., and especially muscular strength were improved during the PSPT. It was recognized that this unique improvement in the PSPT and competition scores have been achieved by using newly developed training systems.

Smart Cities are supposed to be the next generation of not only city infrastructure but also citizenship. Improving citizens' quality of life - referred to as social utility in this paper - should be one of the main targets of a smart city. Electric Vehicles (EVs) offer several new venues in this area. While today citizens are basically on their own when they buy a car while residing in a city, EVs in a smart city is a different topic entirely. Citizens shrink from purchasing EVs today mainly because of high cost and low availability of battery charging. With alternative battery ownership model and Vehicle-To-Home (V2H) systems, citizens can get much more from owning an EV in terms of social utility. This paper shows that high social utility depends on the infrastructure provided by the city. While the battery replacement model presented in this paper greatly increases charging availability, it still heavily depends on battery replacement stations. This paper presents a realistic model for a city-wide EV service infrastructure. The model is based on the real road map of Tokyo. The model evaluates quality of life of citizens, represented by two social utility metrics. Recommendations to battery replacement service providers are made based on simulation results.

To provide an accurate and user-adaptable software keyboard for touchscreens, we propose a probabilistic flick keyboard based on hidden Markov models (HMMs). Touch and flick operations for each character are modeled by HMMs. This keyboard reduces input errors by taking the trajectory of the actual touch position into consideration and by user adaptation. We evaluated the performance of an HMM-based flick keyboard and maximum-likelihood linear regression (MLLR) adaptation. Experimental results showed that a user-dependent model reduced the error rate by 28.3%. In a practical setting, the MLLR adaptation to a specific user with only 10 words reduced the error rate by 16.6% and increased the typing speed by 11.9%.
