At college administration,all insertion university's applicant is rare without checking entrance person's nature though neither the entrance exam competition nor the prepschool in Japan exist certainly in the United States.It is demanded to take an examination of the both of the aptitude of going on to school examinations (SAT or ACT) in most of the university. SAT is an achievement test to which three subjects are selected from among mathematics, a natural science, the social science, the English study, and English literature, and it takes an examination of ACT by the achievement test of English and mathematics. These two tests are different from a common test of Japan, and ACT is executed as many as five times six times a year not the annual one but SAT. You may take an examination of both times how many again because the character of qualifying examination is strong, the one of the highest score is sent to the university, and the entrance examination is done for these. Because the pass or fail of entrance is not decided only by the score of these tests, the existence of such a school can hardly be observed though it might be thought that you may complete the prepschool to work over measures of this test if it thinks like Japan. As for the pass or fail of college administration, it is valued whether to have done the result of the coming from high school besides the result of the aptitude of going on to school examination and the activity in the field of the letter of recommendation from the teacher of charge and the specialist, sports, and the arts, and so on. Such a selection method is the one often seen from a public and state universities by a private university. It actually says in the Harvard University as follows. "Harvard admissions officers give great weight to factors such as special talents, recommendations by school officials, personality, and advanced placement or honors courses. Rank in class and SAT scores are not considered too important." When the current state of the university entrance exam in the above-mentioned United States is compared with that of our country, it often seems to learn very much.

As seismic retrofit for Aichi prefectural office building, base isolation retrofit method was recognized by Aichi prefectural assembly and we started further study for basic design. We had to budget the seismic retrofit cost for coming year and we investigated important matters for cost such as building foundation level, necessary volumes of soil improving and so on. And we had to decide seismic criterion of retrofit building. We had to study about tender method in addition. This report is summary of basic design.

Thyroplasty was performed under local anesthesia on male-to-female transsexuals (MTF/GID) as well as patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD).There were 31 patients with MTF/GID who underwent type 4 thyroplasty during the period from 1999 to 2006. Voice fundamental frequency (F0) rose in all patients. Mean preoperative F0 was 135Hz, and postoperatively the mean value was 236Hz. Type 4 thyroplasty requires specialized skill, and was found to be effective for pitch elevation surgery in MTF/GID. Forty-one patients with AdSD underwent type 2 thyroplasty with Titanium Bridge between December 2002 and December 2005. These patients were followed up 1 year postoperatively with a questionnaire. 70% of the patients judged their voice as “excellent, ” and the remaining patients as improved to “good” or “fair”. Type 2 thyroplasty is a highly effective therapy for AdSD.

Canine serum amyloid A (SAA) is a useful diagnostic marker of systemic inflammation. A latex agglutination turbidimetric immunoassay (LAT) was validated for automated measurements. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical applicability of SAA measured by the LAT. SAA was measured in 7 groups of dogs with and without systemic inflammation (n=247). Overlap performance was investigated. Diagnostic performance was compared to body temperature and leukocyte markers. Clinical decision limits for SAA were estimated. In dogs with neurological, neoplastic, or gastrointestinal disorders (n=143), it was investigated whether a higher proportion of SAA positive dogs could be detected in cases of complications with risk of systemic inflammation. Significantly higher concentrations of SAA were measured in dogs with (range [48.75; 5,032 mg/l]), compared to dogs without systemic inflammation [0; 56.4 mg/l]. SAA was a more sensitive and specific marker of systemic inflammation [area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) 1.00], compared to body temperature (0.6) and segmented neutrophils (best performing leukocyte marker, 0.84). A clinical decision limit of 56.4 mg/l was established giving close to perfect discrimination between dogs with and without systemic inflammation. Higher proportions of SAA-positive dogs were observed in dogs with neurological, neoplastic, and gastrointestinal disorders with complications known to increase risk of systemic inflammation, compared to uncomplicated cases. The automated LAT makes SAA applicable as a relevant diagnostic marker of systemic inflammation in dogs for routine random-assess real-time use in a general clinical setting.

雑種猫、避妊雌、15歳齢が低血糖性痙攣で来院した。インスリノーマが疑われ、試験開腹を行った。膵左葉に2か所の腫瘍が確認され、膵左葉部分切除を行った。病理にてインスリノーマと診断した。術後2年以上、無治療にて経過は良好であったが、術後30カ月目に低血糖性痙攣を再び発症した。試験開腹にて膵臓や他の腹腔臓器に多数の白色結節が認められたが、病理にて過形成と診断された。その3日後に痙攣が再発したため、安楽死処置となった。インスリノーマの転移が疑われた。

健康犬の乳腺からのリンパ流路について調べた。解剖学的研究では、リンパ流路の多くが定型的パターンを示したが、個体により変異も見られた。CT 分析では、造影剤を乳腺皮下に少量注射すると非侵襲性で迅速にリンパ経路を可視化することができた。これらのことから、臨床では各個体で、3D-CT によるリンパ造影をすることで、変異のあるリンパ流路の特定が容易になり、その結果、その個体にあった最も適切な乳腺腫瘍の外科切除と予後判定の実施が可能になると思われた。

A new gravimetric network, named the Japan Gravity Standardization Net 1975 (JGSN 75), was established and new gravity values were determined on the basis of the International Gravity Standardization Net 1971 (IGSN 71). A reliable gravimetric net has been organized in Japan by combining results of the GSI pendulum and gravimeter measurements by the Geographical Survey Institute and gravity values were determined in the Potsdam system referring to the value at the old pendulum station in Tokyo. The IGSN 71 published in 1974 contains 16 common stations with the national net. If the old reference value in Tokyo has no error, a discrepancy in gravity values at every common station must be equal to -14.0 milligals; a correction to the Potsdam absolute value. The present comparison showed that the discrepancy took mostly a constant value within a range of ±0.06 milligals. The mean value and the standard deviation were -13.80±0.03 milligals for the most districts and -14.00±0.03 milligals for the Kyushu District. No systematic inclination against the gravity value was found. This means that the scale of the Japanese gravimetric net agrees well with that of the IGSN 71. Therefore, the gravity value hitherto adopted in Japan can be converted into new one based on the IGSN 71 only by adding a constant value. New gravity values were obtained for 122 stations throughout the country and are given in this report. These are the results of repeated measurements including many new ones with LaCoste & Romberg gravimeters of which calibration constant values were corrected with our pendulum or the IGSN 71 results. A relative accuracy in this net is considered to be ±0.035 milligals and an absolute accuracy is the same as that ofthe IGSN 71. The JGSN 75 will serve as the framework of the gravimetric net in the country and should be used for all gravity works. The old Potsdam system values in Japan should be changed into new ones based on the JGSN 75.

We experienced congenital anomalies of the cervical spine among 4961 patients in our clinic.These anomalies were analyzed 77 cases of congenital cervical vertebral fusion (C2-C3: 28, C5-C6: 13, C3-4: 12, Occ-C1: 9 and others), 14 cases of spina bifida occulta, 125 cases of posterior ponticle of atlas, and one case of os odontoideum.Among congenital cervical vertebral fusion 14 cases of myelopathy were observed, of which 4 cases were operated.Congenital fusion of lower cervical vertebrae affected commonly degeneration of adjacent vertebral disc.Congenital fusion of the occiput and the first vertebra is more frequently complicated with basilar impression and atlantoaxial subluxation.

Mechanism of arm pain syndrome at handwork is as follows.Overwork at handwork (ultimate cause) brings on overstrain of M. levator scapula. Overstrain of M. levator scapula (working cause) brings on subluxation of cervical spine.Subluxation of cervical spine (local cause) brings on overstrain of M. scalenus medius, M. scalenus anterior and etc.For example, overstrain of M. scalenus medius brings on pain and numbness of arm in radial nerve area.Overstrain of M. scalenus (local cause) brings on pain and numbness of arm (result).Analysis on disorder of neck, shoulder and arm was carried out in 103 cases.Enforcement of adjustment of cervical spine was carried out in 68%, including that relation subjunctive symptom and spinal column was obvious.These facts of subluxation of cervical spine were proved by computer tomography.Mechanism of arm pain syndrome in accidental disorder of neck is explained by external force without overstrain of M. levator scapula.

Emotion regulation has been viewed as a deliberate strategy to modulate one's undesirable state. Accordingly, much of the previous emotion regulation researches have examined conscious and deliberate ways of emotion regulation. Recently, however, some researchers began to explore the automaticity of emotion regulation. Their approach to the automatic emotion regulation integrates paradigms and constructs from research on automaticity and deliberative emotion regulation. This article reviews assumptions and theoretical backgrounds put forth by recent advances in automatic emotion regulation research which utilizes automatic goal pursuit and emotional priming techniques, a radical departure from basic methods employed in previous emotion regulation research. Finally, future directions for automatic emotion regulation research will be discussed.

The idea that sensorineural hearing loss without an associated conductive loss due to stapes fixation can be attributed to otosclerosis is presented.The literature on sensorineural hearing loss in otosclerosis is reviewed. Although a considerable number of related findings seems to support this idea, no confirming evidence has been found.It has been believed that otosclerosis is rare in Japan and many otologists are uninterested in the idea of inner ear otosclerosis. Recently, however, some investigators reported a considerable number of patients with clinical and/or histological otosclerosis.There are many cases of sensorineural hearing loss of unknown cause and its etiology has been a matter of concern.As inner ear otosclerosis is clinically characterised by sensorineural hearing loss of unknown origin, it should be included in differential diagnosis when evaluating the etiology of sensorineural hearing loss in general.

The possible role of eating rate in promoting obesity has long been of interest. We examined the association between rate of eating and overweight status in Japanese children and adolescents. This Japanese cross-sectional study included 15,974 children (6-11 y; 7,956 boys and 8,018 girls) and 8,202 adolescents (12-15 y; 3,944 boys and 4,258 girls). Rate of eating was self-reported according to five categories. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from self-reported body weight and height. Overweight was defined according to the International Obesity Task Force age- and sex-specific BMI cutoffs. The overall prevalence of overweight was 13.2%. Rate of eating was positively associated with the risk of overweight, independent of protein, fat, and dietary fiber intakes. Multivariate odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for overweight in the very slow, relatively slow, medium, relatively fast, and very fast categories were 0.31 (0.20, 0.49), 0.49 (0.40, 0.60), 1 (reference), 2.81 (2.42, 3.26), and 4.49 (3.47, 5.81) in male children; 0.42 (0.31, 0.58), 0.49 (0.41, 0.59), 1 (reference), 2.74 (2.27, 3.31), and 5.69 (3.75, 8.63) in female children; 0.13 (0.03, 0.54), 0.43 (0.28, 0.65), 1 (reference), 2.31 (1.88, 2.84), and 3.84 (2.77, 5.31) in male adolescents; and 0.55 (0.30, 1.01), 0.46 (0.33, 0.65), 1 (reference), 1.30 (0.99, 1.71), and 1.49 (0.84, 2.65) in female adolescents, respectively (all p for trend<0.0001). In conclusion, this large cross-sectional study in Japan showed that a higher rate of eating was independently positively associated with an increasing risk of overweight in children and adolescents.

Water-insoluble filtered residue materials of atmospheric wet and dry deposition are composed of mineral dusts and organic materials such as pollens. The number of pollens in the filter residue of deposition samples at Tottori was counted for 2 sizes at about 45 and 30 µm using a confocal laser microscope. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis was used to measure Fe content of the filter residue. Relationship between Fe content analyzed by XRF and insoluble residue weight corrected for pollen weight assuming pollen density of 0.9 g/cm3 showed a linear relationship, suggesting that insoluble residue corrected for pollen weight contains Fe of 3.7 % by weight on the average. The average Fe content is consistent with the values reported for Asian dust (Kosa) events in Korea and China. Because Fe content of insoluble residue in filter samples is easily measured by XRF method, mineral dust amounts in the filter residue samples can be estimated from Fe content of the sample and the average fraction of Fe for Asian dust.

Seven steps of marine terraces are well developed on the Ogi Peninsula, Sado Island. The seventh (lowest) one is a raised abrasion bench less than 2m high, emerged at the time of the destructive earthquake of 1802, hence it is named the 1802 terrace. The sixth terrace is about 2-4m high, and probably was formed at the time of Holocene transgression. Higher five terraces (Pleistocene terraces V-I) are well preserved over the most part of the peninsula and have the height of 32-40m, 70-55m, 94-118m, 123-137m and more than 165m, respectively.The height of former shorelines represented by shoreline angle of each terrace shows that all the terraces tilt northward. Generally, the higher the terrace, the larger the amount of tilting. However, the tilt of the lowest two terraces (the 1802 and Holocene terraces) is almost the same, ca. 1.5′. This indicates that the 1802 tilting caused by the earthquake was a first event after the formation of the Holocene terrace of ca, 6, 000 years old and the recurrence interval of the events was more than 6, 000 years. A uniform regional difference of 2m in height between these two terraces is probably interpreted as a superposed result of the eustatic lowering of sea level and a regional uplift during last 6, 000 years.It is possible to estimate the average intervals of earthquakes after the terrace formation by comparing the tilting rate of all Pleistocene terraces with that of the 1802's. Thus, the average recurrence intervals are estimated at about 8, 600 years since Terrace III was formed and about 5, 000 years since Terrace IV was formed. These values are consistent with the interval of more than 6, 000 years which is estimated from tilt of the 1802 and the Holocene terraces. It is concluded, therefore, that the earthquake has taken place repeatedly in a similar manner with a recurrence interval of about 5, 000-9, 000 years during at least last 105 years.Uplift and northward tilting of the Ogi Peninsula at the time of the 1802 earthquake (Magnitude 6.6) is significantly larger than those of Awa-shims at the Niigata earthquake of 1964 (M 7.4), though its magnitude was smaller.This fact and the limited areal deformation by the 1802 earthquake imply that the epicenter of this earthquake was located very close to the coast of the Ogi Peninsula, probably within a few kilometers off Shukunegi. A reverse faulting is inferred to have occurred along a northward-dipping fault plane at the 1802 earthquake.
