American sociologist A.R.Hochschild put forward a new concept "emotional labor" in 1983. Emotional labor is the process of managing feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job, and therefore it may bring self-estrangement caused by mental strain. The Study for emotional labor in Japan has tended to be in the field health care, especially nursing care. It is said that the emotional labor studies lacked for perspective of social structure. The tendency toward the specific field makes it difficult to generalize. Hereafter it is not only needed to research another type of labor, but to analyze the social structure creating the emotional job. The study for emotional labor has two tendencies. One is the negative studies on emotional labor, another is the positive studies on it. The negative studies follow the original concept of emotional labor. The positive studies focus on utilization of the skill of managing feelings with. The more the positive evaluation of the skill of managing feelings increases, the better the people with the skill of managing feelings be succesd in society. It consider the skill of managing feelings as "Cultural capital", there seems to be potentiall social inequality. So, the positive studies on emotional labor are considered cautiously.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether climate change will increase or decrease agricultural net revenue in Japan as a whole. This study conducts the first Ricardian model analysis of this issue and finds that agricultural net revenue will decrease across Japan by the end of the twenty-first century. The impacts of climate change are quite different in different regions of the country;an increase in agricultural net revenue is predicted in the northern municipalities, whereas agricultural net revenue is predicted to decline in many other municipalities.

This article explains processes for improving the railway earthquake early warning system. These processes were introduced to use data transmitted in real time from recently developed ocean bottom seismic networks. Three mechanisms were designed to be able to exploit this data: 1) an algorithm for servers in OBS system base stations; 2) a procedure to allow transmissions between the servers and railway company receivers; and 3) a system built into the receiver to determine whether running trains need to be stopped or not. Confirmation was obtained that the proposed processes were able to reduce the risks to railways from earthquakes, because they are capable of extending the lead time before the arrival of strong seismic motion.

The African primate fossil record is very poor between the mid-Middle and mid-Late Miocene. Nakali (~10–9.8 Ma) is one of the rare African localities that have yielded primate fossils from this period, including a new genus of great ape, Nakalipithecus nakayamai, and another large-bodied hominoid species. The Nakali primate fauna also includes small-bodied ‘apes’ and Old World monkeys (mostly colobines). In this article, we describe a new specimen of a small-bodied ‘ape’ discovered from Nakali, which is assigned to nyanzapithecines. Nyanzapithecines are characterized by their derived dental morphology, and the previously known nyanzapithecines range in chronological age between the Late Oligocene and early Middle Miocene (~25–13.7 Ma). The new nyanzapithecine specimen from Nakali is therefore the latest occurrence of this group in the African fossil record, extending its chronological range by almost 4 million years younger.

Objective The importance of antimicrobial stewardship is increasingly highlighted in this age of antimicrobial resistance. A better comprehension of adverse drug events (ADEs) can promote the appropriate use of antibiotics. We aimed to quantify the incidence of ADEs associated with broad-spectrum systemic antibiotics in a hospital setting. Methods We conducted a six-month prospective, observational study at Osaka University Hospital to describe the incidence of ADEs in patients hospitalized in general wards undergoing treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics (carbapenems, piperacillin/tazobactam [PIPC/TAZ], and anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus agents). The occurrence of ADE was defined as any cardiac, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, renal, neurologic, hematologic, dermatologic, or musculoskeletal manifestation after 48 hours or more of systemic antibiotic therapy. Results The 3 most frequently prescribed antibiotics were PIPC/TAZ (242 cases), meropenem (181 cases), and vancomycin (92 cases). Of 689 patients, 118 (17.1%) experienced ADEs, including gastrointestinal (6.4%), hepatobiliary (4.2%), dermatologic (2.5%), and renal (2.3%) manifestations. Patients treated with PIPC/TAZ, meropenem, doripenem, vancomycin, daptomycin, and teicoplanin developed ADEs at rates of 20.7%, 16.0%, 15.4%, 19.6%, 11.8%, and 10.9%, respectively. Conclusion Our study provides a quantitative value for the incidence of ADEs associated with broad-spectrum antibiotics in clinical practice. To optimize patient safety, clinicians need to be aware of the risks associated with antibiotic administration.

Bacterial flora on the skin surface contains Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) which causes rough skin and atopic dermatitis and enhances innate immunity, respectively. In this study, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was evaluated for six saturated fatty acids and two unsaturated fatty acids against S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The antimicrobial behavior in the liquid medium was categorized into three groups. The first was the selective antibacterial activity group comprising myristic acid (C14:0 fatty acid), palmitoleic acid (C16:1 fatty acid), and oleic acid (C18:1 fatty acid) and preferentially displayed antimicrobial activity for S. aureus (group 1). C16:1 fatty acid displayed high antimicrobial activity only for S. aureus. The second was the non-selective antibacterial activity group which displayed antibacterial activity for both Staphylococci (group 2). Caprylic acid (C8:0 fatty acid), capric acid (C10:0 fatty acid), and lauric acid (C12:0 fatty acid) comprised group 2. The third was the non-antibacterial activity group which did not show significant antimicrobial activity (group 3). Bactericidal activities were confirmed for C12:0 fatty acid and C16:1 fatty acid by evaluating the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) on the agar medium. C12:0 fatty acid displayed non-selective bactericidal behavior against S. aureus and S. epidermidis when the fatty acid concentration was above 250 μg mL–1. These findings suggest that C16:1 fatty acid has the potential to be used as a detergent in skin care and medical products because it can selectively kill only S. aureus.

Background: Few studies have investigated the effects of Okinawan vegetable consumption on the risk of incident stroke and coronary heart disease. This study aimed to examine associations of vegetable, fruit, and Okinawan vegetable consumption with risk of incident stroke and coronary heart disease in the Japanese population of Okinawa.Methods: Study design was a prospective cohort study. During 1995-1998, a validated food frequency questionnaire was administered in two study areas to 16,498 participants aged 45-74 years. In 217,467 person-years of follow-up until the end of 2012, a total of 839 stroke cases and 197 coronary heart disease cases were identified.Results: No statistically significant association between total Okinawan vegetable consumption and risk of stroke and coronary heart disease was obtained: the multivariable adjusted hazard ratios for the highest versus lowest tertile of consumption were 1.09 (95% confidence interval, 0.93-1.29; p for trend = 0.289) in model 2. Total vegetable and fruit and specific Okinawan vegetable consumption were also not statistically significantly associated with risk of cardiovascular outcomes.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that consumption of total vegetable and fruit, total Okinawan vegetables, and specific Okinawan vegetables in Japanese residents of Okinawa was not associated with risk of incident stroke and coronary heart disease.

Background:Uric acid (UA) serves as an antioxidant in vascular endothelial cells. UA transporter 1 (URAT1) encoded by SLC22A12 is expressed in the kidney and vessels and its loss of function causes hypouricemia. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is any endothelial dysfunction in patients with hypouricemia.Methods and Results:Twenty-six patients with hypouricemia (<2.5 mg/dl) and 13 healthy control subjects were enrolled. Endothelial function was evaluated using flow-mediated dilation (FMD). mRNA of UA transporters expressed in cultured human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) was detected on RT-PCR. There was a positive correlation between FMD and serum UA in the hypouricemia group. URAT1 loss-of-function mutations were found in the genome of 21 of 26 patients with hypouricemia, and not in the other 5. In the hypouricemia groups, serum UA in homozygous and compound heterozygous patients was significantly lower than in other groups, suggesting that severity of URAT1 dysfunction may influence the severity of hypouricemia. Thirteen of 16 hypouricemia subjects with homozygous and compound heterozygote mutations had SUA <0.8 mg/dl and their FMD was lower than in other groups. HUVEC do not express mRNA of URAT1, suggesting the null role of URAT1 in endothelial function.Conclusions:Depletion of UA due to SLC22A12/URAT1 loss-of-function mutations causes endothelial dysfunction in hypouricemia patients. Background: Metal exposures could possibly affect allergic responses in pregnant women, although no studies have yet shown a clear relationship between the two, and such exposures might also affect the development of allergic diseases in children.Methods: We investigated the relationship between metal concentrations in whole blood and immunoglobulin E (IgE; total and specific) in 14,408 pregnant women who participated in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study. The subjects submitted self-administered questionnaires, and blood samples were collected from them twice, specifically, during the first trimester and again during the second/third trimester. Concentrations of the metals Cd, Pb, Hg, Se, and Mn, as well as serum total and allergen-specific IgEs for egg white, house dust-mites (HDM), Japanese cedar pollen (JCP), animal dander, and moth, were measured. Allergen-specific IgE(s) were divided based on concentrations <0.35 or ≥0.35 UA/mL, and the metal levels were divided into quartiles.Results: Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that there was a significant negative correlation between HDM- and animal dander-specific IgEs and Hg and Mn concentrations. Conversely, there was a significant positive relationship between JCP-specific IgE and Hg and Se concentrations.Conclusions: Metal exposures may be related to both increases and decreases in allergen-specific IgEs in pregnant women.

Model performance of a regional-scale meteorology – chemistry model (NHM-Chem) has been evaluated for the consistent predictions of the chemical, physical, and optical properties of aerosols. These properties are essentially important for the accurate assessment of air quality and health hazards, contamination of land and ocean ecosystems, and regional climate changes due to aerosol-cloud-radiation interaction processes. Currently, three optional methods are available: the 5-category non-equilibrium, 3-category non-equilibrium, and bulk equilibrium methods. These three methods are suitable for the predictions of regional climate, air quality, and operational forecasts, respectively. In this paper, the simulated aerosol chemical, physical, and optical properties and their consistency were evaluated by using various observation data in East Asia. The simulated mass, size, and deposition of SO42- and NH4+ agreed well with the observations, whereas those of NO3-, sea-salt, and dust needed improvement. The simulated surface mass concentration (PM10 and PM2.5) and spherical extinction coefficient agreed well with the observations. The simulated aerosol optical thickness and dust extinction coefficient were significantly underestimated.

Because biallelic SZT2 variants have been reported in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders associated with various degrees of developmental delay, intractable seizures, and distinctive features; this condition is recognized as an autosomal recessive disorder. Previously, eleven patients have been reported and most of them have compound heterozygous SZT2 variants, leading to premature termination. In these patients, all reported variants were unique and there were no common pathogenic variants identified. In this study, we identified a paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 1 in a patient with a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with severe intellectual disability, intractable epilepsy, autistic features, distinctive features, and transient macrocephaly. This resulted in homozygous patterns through chromosome 1. Among the variants in chromosome 1, a rare SZT2 variant, NM_015284.3:c.6553C>T (p.Arg2185Trp), was selected as a powerful candidate variant in this patient. Although the clinical features of this patient are relatively milder than that reported previously, it may be derived from genetic heterogeneity. This is the first report of a homozygous missense SZT2 variant.

The consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events and sudden cardiac death. Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is a predictor of cardiac mortality, but little information is known on the relationship between CMD and omega-3 PUFAs. This study aimed to identify the relationship between the serum levels of omega-3 PUFAs and the CMD evaluated by the hyperemic microvascular resistance index (hMVRI) to assess coronary microvascular function in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD).Intracoronary physiological variables (fractional flow reserve (FFR), hMVRI, mean distal coronary pressure (Pd), and average peak velocity (APV)) were measured in 108 patients. These parameters were evaluated in 150 coronary arteries with stenosis of intermediate severity and without significant ischemia (FFR > 0.80). The PUFA levels and atherosclerotic risk factors were also measured. Univariate analysis shows that hMVRI was negatively correlated with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/arachidonic acid (AA) ratio (β = −0.31, P = 0.001) and EPA (β = −0.25, P = 0.009) and was positively correlated with dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (β = 0.26, P = 0.006). Multivariate regression analysis shows that the EPA/AA ratio was the only independent determinant of hMVRI (β = −0.234, SE = 0.231, P = 0.024). Furthermore, hMVRI decreased significantly from the lowest to highest tertiles of the EPA/AA ratio (P = 0.007). The EPA/AA ratio was positively correlated with APV at hyperemia (β = 0.26, P = 0.008) but not with Pd at hyperemia.A lower serum EPA/AA ratio may cause CMD in patients with stable CAD.

本論文は、皮膚に関する新しい知見を概観するとともに、看護実践の場において看護職者が対象者の皮膚を媒体とした触れるケアが、疼痛緩和や不安の軽減、リラクゼーションにつながり快の感情を引き出す効果があることについて看護の視点から述べる。加えて、触れるケアは、副交感神経を優位にする効果がありエビデンスのある看護技術の一つであることを示唆し、看護教育への導入を提言するものである。

Inhibitory effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN), the three major constituents in marijuana, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained in marijuana smoke on catalytic activity of human cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9 were investigated. These phytocannabinoids concentration-dependently inhibited S-warfarin 7-hydroxylase and diclofenac 4′-hydroxylase activities of human liver microsomes (HLMs) and recombinant CYP2C9 (rCYP2C9). In contrast, none of the twelve PAHs including benz[a]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene exerted substantial inhibition (IC50 > 10 µM). The inhibitory potentials of Δ9-THC (Ki = 0.937–1.50 µM) and CBN (Ki = 0.882–1.29 µM) were almost equivalent regardless of the enzyme sources used, whereas the inhibitory potency of CBD (Ki = 0.954–9.88 µM) varied depending on the enzyme sources and substrates used. Δ9-THC inhibited both S-warfarin 7-hydroxylase and diclofenac 4′-hydroxylase activities of HLMs and rCYP2C9 in a mixed manner. CBD and CBN competitively inhibited the activities of HLMs and rCYP2C9, with the only notable difference being that CBD and CBN exhibited mixed-type inhibitions against diclofenac 4′-hydroxylation and S-warfarin 7-hydroxylation, respectively, by rCYP2C9. None of Δ9-THC, CBD, and CBN exerted metabolism-dependent inhibition. These results indicated that the three major phytocannabinoids but not PAHs contained in marijuana smoke potently inhibited CYP2C9 activity and that these cannabinoids can be characterized as direct inhibitors for CYP2C9.

Fatty acid calcium salt is a high melting point powder excellent in lubricity and water repellency and is often used as a cosmetic raw material. We have shown that several calcium salts of fatty acids have high selective bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes and low bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. In this study, we evaluated the influence of pH on the bactericidal behavior of calcium laurate, and showed that under acidic conditions it shows higher bactericidal activity against both bacteria but selectivity becomes lower. This finding is useful for designing skin cleansers and makeup cosmetics containing lauric acid.

Numerous topoisomerase inhibitors with proven efficacy have been used extensively to treat various human neoplasms. However, among these, only doxorubicin has been used and studied extensively in veterinary oncology. The current study was performed to evaluate the responsiveness of canine osteosarcoma (cOSA), mammary gland tumour (cMGT), and malignant melanoma (cMM) cell lines to several topoisomerase inhibitors. In addition, the correlation between the sensitivity to treatment and multi-drug resistant (MDR) factors was investigated. cOSA cell lines exhibited higher sensitivity than cMGT and cMM cell lines to all the topoisomerase inhibitors tested in vitro; this was associated with the levels of multi-drug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) gene expression in the cOSA cell lines. Treatment of cOSA (HMPOS) and cMGT cell line (CHMp) xenograft mouse models with etoposide markedly delayed tumour progression in HMPOS xenografts, but failed to elicit lasting anti-tumour effects on CHMp xenograft mice. The present findings suggest that MDR1 represents a molecular signature for prediction of treatment efficacy of topoisomerase inhibitors, especially that of etoposide, which may be a clinically useful anti-tumour agent for cOSA; however, further study is necessary to refine the treatment protocol.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC), a form of differentiated thyroid carcinoma, is the second most common malignancy arising from thyroid follicular cells. Recently, the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification for differentiated thyroid carcinoma was revised from the 7th to the 8th edition. The diagnostic criteria for poorly differentiated carcinoma (PDC) were also updated in the latest World Health Organization (WHO) classification. In this study, we investigated whether these changes are appropriate for accurately predicting prognosis. Three hundred and twenty-nine patients diagnosed with postoperative pathologically confirmed FTC, who underwent initial surgery at our hospital between 1984 and 2004, were enrolled. For this study, patients were re-evaluated and diagnosed with FTC (N = 285) or PDC (N = 44) without typical nuclear findings of papillary thyroid carcinoma. For FTC, the 8th TNM classification was a more accurate predictor of prognosis than the 7th TNM classification. In the 8th TNM classification, cause-specific survival became significantly poorer from Stage I to IVB. The cause-specific survival of PDC based on the latest WHO classification was worse than, but did not significantly differ from, that of PDC based only on the former WHO classification. For PDC, neither of the TNM classifications could accurately predict prognosis. Taken together, we conclude that (1) the 8th TNM classification more accurately reflects the prognosis of FTC than the 7th TNM classification; (2) PDC based on the former WHO classification should be retained, at least in Japan; and (3) the TNM classification may not be suitable for predicting the prognosis of PDC.
