When the <I>in vitro</I> translation products of mRNAs from castrated animals (48h) were compared with those from androgen-treated animals (48 h) to survey the molecular mechanism of androgen-responsive gene expressions in the rat seminal vesicles, some peptide bands which were repressed in response to androgen were observed. From these findings, we constructed a partial cDNA library of poly (A+) RNAs which had been isolated from the seminal vesicles of castrated rats (48 h) and modestly enriched with respect to the concentration of androgen-repressed mRNAs by sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and screened by differential colony hybridization. One cDNA clone, pSvr-1, whose mRNA is markedly induced within 24h after castration of the animal in the seminal vesicles as well as in the ventral prostate, was isolated. pSvr-1 hybridized to a mRNA of 1, 700 nucleotides in length. Partial sequence analysis showed that this clone had highly homologous but not identical sequences to those reported for rat sulfated glycoprotein-2. This cDNA clone may provide a useful probe for the study of the negative regulation mechanism of gene expression by androgens.

Minakata Kumagusu (1867-1941), a distinguished scholar both in ecology and folklore, wrote many Japanese essays which are often viewed as pedantic and difficult to read through. It is, however, important to understand that he spent fourteen years in the US and UK, and only wrote essays in English until he was nearly forty years old. Even after his late start as a Japanese essayist, he seems to have put priority on his English contributions to the two London magazines, Nature and Notes and Queries over publications in Japanese. It is therefore necessary to analyse his English essays in order to fully understand his studies and philosophy. In this project, we aim to trace the background to Minakata's English essays in connection with the scholary exchanges published in Nature.

学生の自律学習空間「雄飛館ラーニングコモンズ」内に設置されている学習支援カウンターでは、3 名の学習支援員(任期付職員)が常駐しているが、2013 年10 月の仮オープン以降、直接的なスタディ・スキル支援の場としての、また学生と教員・その他の支援機関とを仲介する場としての試行が続けられている。具体的には、(1)雄飛館ラーニングコモンズのスペースを活用した日本語/ 英語ライティング・プレゼンテーションの個別相談対応、(2)日本語/ 英語学習に関するワークショップ実施、(3)ICT 機器の利用相談を通じて、学生に対する学習支援を行っている。さらに、グローバル人材育成事業(現「経済社会の発展を牽引するグローバル人材育成支援」)の一環として、英語e ラーニングシステムのヘルプデスクを兼ね、ラーニングコモンズを起点として学生の主体的な学びをワンストップで支援している。本報告では、学生に対するヒアリングを通じ学習支援ニーズや学習傾向を改めて分析し、学習支援カウンターにおける主体的な学びを促進するための支援体制の構築へ向けた考察結果を報告する。

Recent tendency of intervention in drug use is said to have been in some transition. This paper is a tentative trial to give an perspective which can analyze this transition. Firstly, I try to review some studies about drug use and point out their peculiarities and problems, Secondly, I re-examine labeling-interactionist perspective, giving shape to our own perspective. Finally, from sociological view, I specify our perspective deliberately.

In this article we analyzed the sociological labeling theory, especially focusing on Jane R. Mercer and also including the social climate of 1960s. According to Mercer, there are two perspectives in which mental retardation can be considered: (1) the clinical perspective and (2) the social system perspective. The clinical perspective is characterized by the simultaneous use of a medical model and a statistical model though these two models are frequently confused. She contends it is not appropriate to apply a medical model to mild mental retardation, but it is more appropriate to adopt a social system model for analyzing problems that people with mild retardation would meet in a community. She argues that from a social system perspective, mental retardation is a sociocultural phenomenon, That means that mental retardation is an achieved status in a social system and persons holding that status plays the social role designated by the social system. From Mercer's researches at Riversides, she found that there were a disproportionately large number of black persons and Mexican American persons labeled by community agencies. She also discovered that the schools were the chief labelers. From these and other findings Mercer came to three major conclusions. The first one is that clinicians and psychologists in the community were not measuring adaptive behavior only because there were no adaptive scales available for them to use. This meant that they judged persons as persons with mental retardation almost entirely on the basis of an IQ test score. The second one is that the cut-off point of an IQ score should be lowered to 2SD below, though public schools were using the cut-off point of IQ 79 or below. Third one is that tremendous cultural biases exists in the IQ test and the test is not appropriate when used with lower class persons who do not share the same cultural traditions as the dominant Anglo American society. These conclusions lead her to develop an improved assessment test called the System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment (SOMPA). SOMPA includes an extensive battery of measures. SOMPA has extensively reviewed and debated, so it has not recognized as a valid assessment tool for children yet. Mercer's social system approach, however, provides us with the new perspective about intellectual disability. According to Mercer intellectual disability is not mental defect or deficiency, but a kind of devalued deviancy which is determined to be deviant by other people in the social system.

Juvenile justice policies had been developing smoothly up until the 1960's, backed up by the rehabilitation ideology. But, they have been drastically changing for two decades. The rehabilitative idea and its institutions supported by traditional liberals have come under heavy cross-fire from labeling theorists, just desert liberals, and deterrence conservatives. The latest reforms are summarized ; (1) Juvenile offenders should be processed in the same way as adult cases, (2) The medical model must be removed, which is exemplified by the growing interest in offences (not offenders), mechanized justice to eliminate discretions, and so on. The equal treatment between juveniles and adults is facilitated by the disappearance of childhood. The concept of childhood is becoming extinct because of mutual causalities of the following factors. The escalation of an adult-centered society forces children to become precocious and independent early. The children's rights movement claims equal rights with adults, but rationalizes the lesser protection of children in the aging of society. Popularization of Freudian idea has changed the concept of children and the method of child-rearing. Transition from printed media to TV media enables the undifferentiated accessibility to, and the total disclosure of, all kinds of information monopolized by adults before. On the other hand, childish adults are increasing. So, the boundary between childish adults and adultlike children is blurring. The decline of the rehabilitative ideal is a good example of the self-fulfilling prophecy. Pessimistic atmosphere has become prevalent after President Kennedy's assassination. American reliance on establishment in general, and on the juvenile justice system has lapsed. Public opinion which became disappointed in the rehabilitative function of correctional institutions has undermined the real activities of these systems. The malleability of human character is a dependent variable of the contemporary concept about human nature. Present juvenile offenders are next to incurable because almost all people have lost their faith and hope in their corrigibility. It is only with the rejection of social fatalism implied in the notion of unchangeable human nature that the tragic circle can be broken.
