新型インフルエンザなどの新興感染症の出現が危惧されている現在,新たなコンセプトに基づくワクチンの開発が要望される.従来のワクチンは小児を対象としたものが主であったが,最近では思春期を対象としたパピローマに対するワクチンや,成人や高齢者を対象とした帯状疱疹ワクチンも開発されてきた.今後は遺伝子組換えワクチン,DNAワクチン,ポリペプチドワクチンの開発とともに,投与法の改良として粘膜ワクチン,免疫をより効果のよいものにし,副反応の少ないアジュバントの開発が急がれる.

The crisis of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is causing damage to the social and medical community. However, extreme emergency neuro-interventions such as mechanical thrombectomy still require the healthcare workers to offer the appropriate treatment while preventing further spread of the infection. This article outlines the necessary steps in managing a possible COVID-19 patient starting from patient screening to personnel infection and environmental contamination measures.

およそ半世紀前に鎮静剤として開発されたサリドマイドは,1960年代始めに催奇性が発覚し,一度,市場からの撤退を余儀なくされた.しかし,ハンセン病や血液癌の一種である多発性骨髄腫といった難病に対して著しい効果を有することから再び脚光を浴び,現在は厳しい統制を受けながらも,その処方が認可されている.このようにサリドマイドは,半世紀以上の歴史を有するきわめてよく知られた薬剤であるが,その催奇性メカニズムは長い間不明であった.最近になり,磁性ナノ微粒子(半田ビーズ)を用いたアフィニティ精製により,サリドマイド催奇性における主要な標的因子であるセレブロン(cereblon,CRBN)が単離・同定され,その分子機構が解明された.

本稿はボルソナロ政権下における大統領・議会関係の特徴を検討したものである。2018年総選挙におけるボルソナロの当選や下院選・上院選での社会自由党の躍進、労働者党・ブラジル社会民主党・ブラジル民主運動の議席の減少は既存の政党政治に対する不信の産物であった。そのため、ボルソナロは比例代表制・多党制・大統領制という組み合わせによって生み出される連立政権に特徴づけられる「連合大統領制」を否定して議員連盟との協力による閣僚任命を行ったが、政党連合を基盤としない大統領・議会関係は不安定であり、議会が政権運営の障害となるケースも出てきている。2019年4月頃から政権側による他党との歩み寄りの模索がみられるが、「連合大統領制」への回帰による大統領・議会関係の安定化と政権の一層の支持率の低下というジレンマの中でボルソナロ大統領がどのような選択をしていくのかを、今後注視していく必要がある。

In this paper, we propose the method for the measurement of required power and the adjustment of optimum gear ratio in take-off ground running. To get the values of required power and speed, we measured torque of the left side and the right side of pedals, RPM of pedals, and speed of the cockpit frame. In order to improve the take-off speed, some drums were applied, and the optimum gear ratio of the front drum to the rear drum was determined.

ダウンサイジングターボ等の内燃機関の大幅な燃費向上は、エンジン加振力増大を招くため、車体への加振力を遮断する新たなマウントシステム構築が必要である。要求機能が相反した複雑なシステムを単純化して成立させる公理的設計を活用して、アクティブトルクロッドシステムを創案し、燃費向上と静粛性を両立させた。

More than half a century ago, Noam Chomsky advanced the nativist hypothesis that our syntactic competence is innate. His hypothesis has received a number of objections from the philosophers and psychologists oriented to empiricism. The debate is still ongoing. This paper aims to elucidate the structure of this debate between nativism and empiricism. First, we delineate the meaning of “innateness” relevant in this debate. Then we articulate four arguments for nativism and the objections from empiricists against each of them. The four arguments are Poverty of Stimulus Argument, the argument from linguistic universals, the argument from convergence, and the argument from critical period effects.

A near-field optical spectroscopy technique has been developed that collects the nonlinear sum-frequency signal from the surface adsorbed monolayer sample. The sum-frequency signal generated at the surface was collected with a silver-coated multi-mode fiber probe. The metal coating of the fiber effectively eliminates the far-field stray light that enters the core fiber from the outer edge, passing through the clad region. As the tip was pulled away from the sample surface, the sum-frequency signal from the GaAs crystal sample decreased rapidly with increasing tip-sample distance, indicating that the signal is essentially due to the near-field generated by the sum-frequency process. By using the metal-coated multi-mode fiber probe, information about the vibrational structure of the adsorbed molecules at the surfaces is studied. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2013.76]

The use of virtual conversational agents is awaited in the tutoring of physical skills such as sports or dances. This paper describes an ongoing project aiming to realize a virtual instructor for ballroom dance. First, a human-human experiment is conducted to collect the interaction corpus between a professional instructor and six learners. The verbal and non-verbal behaviors of the instructor is analyzed and served as the base of a state transition model for ballroom dance tutoring. In order to achieve natural and highly interactive instruction during the multi-modal interaction between the virtual instructor and the learner, it is necessary to divide the learner's motion into small but meaningful segments in real-time. In the case of ballroom dance, the smallest meaningful unit of dance steps is called count which should be synchronized with the beats of accompanied music. A method of automatic extraction from the learner's dance practice motion into count segments is proposed in this paper. This method is based on trajectory similarity comparison between the motion of the learner and the data collected from a professional dance instructor using Angular Matrix for Shape Similarity (AMSS). Another algorithm for identifying the worst performed portion and the corresponding improvement of the learner's motion is also proposed. Finally, a comparison experiment between the prototype system and a non-interactive self-training system was conducted and reported.

With the widespread use of online shopping in recent years, consumer search requests for products have become more diverse. Previous web search methods have used adjectives as input by consumers. However, given that the number of adjectives that can be used to express textures is limited, it is debatable whether adjectives are capable of richly expressing variations of product textures. In Japanese, tactile and visual textures are easily and frequently expressed by onomatopoeia, such as ``fuwa-fuwa'' for a soft and light sensation and ``kira-kira'' for a glossy texture. Onomatopoeia are useful for understanding not only material textures but also a user's intuitive, sensitive, and even ambiguous feelings evoked by materials. In this study, we propose a system to rank FMD images corresponding to texture associated with Japanese onomatopoeia based on their symbolic sound associations between the onomatopoeia phonemes and the texture sensations. Our system quantitatively estimates the texture sensations of input onomatopoeia, and calculates the similarities between the users' impressions of the onomatopoeia and those of the images. Our system also suggests the images which best match the input onomatopoeia. An evaluation of our method revealed that the best performance was achieved when the SIFT features, the colors of the images, and text describing impressions of the images were used.

Bone is a critically important part of the skeletal system that is essential for body support and locomotion. The immune system protects against pathogens and is active in host defense. These two seemingly distinct systems in fact interact with each other, share molecules and create a collaborative regulatory system called the “osteoimmune system”. The most representative osteoimmune molecule is receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL), which plays multiple roles in the osteoimmune system under both physiological and pathological conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer metastasis to bone. Based on accumulating evidence for such mutual dependence, it is concluded that the relationship between bone and the immune system did not develop by accident but as a necessary consequence of evolution. Here I describe the history of and recent advances in osteoimmunology, providing a perspective in the contexts of both science and medicine.

本格焼酎の伝来は明らかにされていないが,その仕込み法は,鹿児島で独自に発達し個性豊かな味わいを持つ蒸留酒として全国各地で愛飲されている。しかし,全国に広まったのは1980年代以降であり,それまでは南九州の地酒として飲まれていたものである。ここでは,本格焼酎の歴史や製法,香りの由来や生成機構,機能性などについて紹介する。
