The food habits of chipmunks were studied by feeding observations in an oak forest for six years. In 1711 sightings of feeding, 41 plants and 16 animals (mostly insects) were identified. Various portions of the plants (seeds, fruits, buds, leaves, flowers and sap) were utilized in different seasons. Acorns were consumed in as many as 21 percent of the total number of sightings. Crown foraging for cherry seeds and elm samaras was common in early summer, and in late summer the chipmunks frequented crop fields for wheat. The number of available food items decreased markedly in autumn, although many acorns were consumed and hoarded during this period. Scattered and nest hoards were actively made in autumn, but the former was not consumed during winter. The overwintered acorns in the scattered hoards and fresh vegetables were heavily utilized in spring. Significantly, the fluctuation of acorn production affected the reproduction of chipmunks in the following year. Thus, the active, scattered hoarding activities in autumn appear to have an important function in the spring life of chipmunks.

強風による瓦の飛散原因を調べるため,自然風中において寄せ棟屋根上の瓦の表面と裏面に作用する風力を測定した。測定は,強風地帯で行われている軒先を完全にシールした場合と,軒先をシールしない場合の両方の状態で行った。軒先をシールすることによって,風上屋根面の野地裏の平均圧力が低下し,瓦に作用する正味の平均揚力も低下する。瞬間的に瓦に大きな揚力が働くのは,風が軒に対してほぼ正面から当たる場合の風上側の屋根面であり,この場合,瓦の表面に作用する風力が瞬間的に大きく低下する一方,野地裏の圧力即ち瓦の裏面の圧力はほぼ平均値を保つ。軒先をシールした場合には,瓦の表面の圧力が大きく低下する時,野地裏の圧力も追従して低下する結果,瓦に作用する正味の圧力がそれ程低下しない。したがって,軒先のシールは瓦の飛散防止にとって効果的な方法の一つと考えられ。

Objective Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) frequently present with similar clinical, endoscopic and pathological features, therefore it is difficult to differentiate between them. The aim of this study was to elucidate the diagnostic delay and prognosis of ITB cases, initially misdiagnosed as IBD. Methods ITB cases were selected from the hospitalized patient list between April 2004 and March 2017 in a tuberculosis center in Japan. We retrospectively evaluated the initial diagnosis, clinical characteristics, endoscopic and pathological findings, bacterial examinations, treatment and prognosis. Results Among 66 ITB patients, ten patients were initially misdiagnosed as IBD. Seven patients were male and the median age was 60.5 years (23-74 years). After the diagnosis of IBD, all the patients were treated with mesalazine, in addition to corticosteroids in two patients and sequential azathioprine and infliximab in one. The median duration of diagnostic delay was 5.5 months (range 0.5-17 months). Eight patients had active pulmonary tuberculosis at the diagnosis of ITB. Acid-fast bacilli were confirmed in four of seven patients by reevaluation of the pathological specimens at the IBD diagnosis. Two patients needed intestinal resection and one with erroneous corticosteroid use for IBD died due to respiratory failure in spite of receiving appropriate treatment for tuberculosis. Conclusion ITB patients were frequently misdiagnosed and treated as IBD, thus resulting in a poor clinical outcome even after finally making a correct diagnosis and administering appropriate treatment. On diagnosis of IBD and/or treatment failure, chest radiograph and acid-fast bacilli of the pathological specimens should be carefully evaluated in order to rule out tuberculosis.

Vizantine (3) is a synthetic derivative of treharose-6,6-dicorynomycolate (TDCM) which was characterized in 1993 as the cell surface glycolipid of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and shows a variety of significant biological activities for adjuvant development. In vitro, vizantine activates not only the macrophages of mice sera, but also induces the release of MIP-1β, IL-6, IL-8 etc. from human acute monocytic leukemia cell line cells (THP-1 cells). Because almost no TNF-α is induced in vivo, the lethal toxicity to animals was found to be ncredibly low. However, oral administration of vizantine to C57BL/6 mouse (p.o. 100 μg x 7 times) inhibits lung metastasis of B16-BL6 melanoma cells (which are classified in highly metastatic tumor cell). In recent years, structural components of the outer surface membrane of bacteria have attracted considerable attention as lead compounds for adjuvant development. However, a concern of the use of these compounds is that they can over-activate innate immune responses leading to the clinical symptoms of septic shock. Therefore, an important issue is a detailed knowledge of the immunostimulatory mechanism to harness beneficial effects without causing toxicity. Here, to advance the mechanistic studies of vizantine, we have synthesized magnetic beads-attached 4 that maintain immunological activities and can therefore act as a molecular probe. Using a pull-down assay of 4 and the extract of HEK-293T cells transfected with plasmid for TLR4 and MD2, vizantine was found to act as a ligand of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and MD2 complex. Furthermore, the macrophage from TLR4 knockout (TLR4 -/-) mice showed decreased response to vizantine, but that from TLR2 knockout (TLR2 -/-) mice did not. Taken together the results suggest that vizantine suppresses the tumor lung metastasis through the activation of macrophages via TLR4/MD2 complex.
