Biotin is a water soluble vitamin that is a cofactor for carboxylases in fatty acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, and amino acids metabolism. Biotin deficiency is very rare in humans since biotin is widely contained in various foods. However, biotin deficiency has been reported in infants using "infant formulas" made in Japan. Biotin deficiency is especially developed in infants with special formulas, high-calorie infusion with low biotin contents and anticonvulsants. Biotin deficiency is sometimes shown in infant patients with milk allergies caused by amino acid formula with low biotin contents. In this article, we reviewed the biotin deficiency induced by special formulas in Japanese infants. From previous reports, the biotin content in Japanese formulas is lower than the recommended dietary amount of FAO/WHO (1.5 μg/100kcal) and that of United States products. Urinary biotin concentration in formula-fed infants is lower than breast-fed infants, because biotin contents in Japanese formulas are much less. From these findings, biotin should be added to Japanese infant formulas as soon as possible, and it is necessary to make clinical staffs, such as dietitians and pediatricians, and neonatal intensive care unit staffs recognize that the biotin contents in special formula are not enough for maintaining the nutritional status of biotin.

The root-parasitic weed Striga hermonthica is a major biotic constraint to cereal production in sub-Saharan Africa. Striga seeds germinate only when exposed to host root-derived stimulants, strigolactones (SLs). Induction of Striga germination in the absence of host plants, suicidal germination, is an attractive approach to control the parasite. However, limited studies are available on demonstration of the approach using synthetic SL analogues under field conditions. Using an active synthetic analogue, a carbamate designated as T-010, which was easy in preparation, the practicality of suicidal germination in combating Striga was demonstrated under field conditions.

A parasitic plant Striga hermonthica has been causing huge damages to crop productions in African countries. A feasible method to prevent Striga infestation is to manipulate the host-parasite interaction by small molecules. Plant hormone strigolactones have been attractive targets since their first discovery as host-derived germination stimulants for Striga, although how Striga seeds sense strigolactones have long been unknown. Recent discovery of strigolactone receptors in Striga unveiled unique mechanism of strigolactone perceptions, and raises a hope to develop herbicides through rational design of small molecules. Here I review recent state of strigolactone research in Striga.

This is a study of one of H. Pinter's early works, The Collection. His early plays are often called 'Comedy of Menace'(Irving Wardle), but this play is a little bit different from the very early plays like The Room, The Birthday Party, A Slight Ache, and The Dumb Waiter. Pinter's interest seems to have shifted from 'Menace' to 'Relationship'. So the point of this essay should be on the relationship among characters. The last problematic scene of this play must show the way the characters will take to live on together. Usually critics use concepts of oppositions such as 'man/woman' or 'dominant/subservient' to interpret this last scene, or I should say this play, but I don't think these concepts are enough to explain the Stella's enigmatic attitude. In this essay I will try to introduce another concept of oppositions for interpretation and receive Pinter's message through the process of making the meaning of her attitude clear.

ここまで、クライシス・プランの活用例を紹介してきました。各ケースでのやりとりを見ると、決して特別な関わり方をしているわけではないとわかります。しかしながら、どういう利用者に対し、どのような点でクライシス・プランをお勧めでき、実際にはどういったやりとりのなかで作成していけばよいのか、「もう少し詳しく知りたい!」という方もいるのではないでしょうか。 ここで、前項の「こんなケースに使えます、クライシス・プラン」の事例を用いながら、クライシス・プランの作成・導入・運用のプロセスを11のステップに切り分け、必要な考え方や知識を整理していきます。

南極海におけるペンギン類の個体数変動の種間・地域間の違いをもたらすメカニズムを明らかにするために、最新の動物装着型記録計による採餌行動の研究を行った。ペンギンの採餌行動とその環境要因(特に海氷分布)との関係は、同所的に生息する種間および同種の地域間で異なることが明らかになった。採餌行動の種間・地域間の違いにより、海洋環境変化がペンギンの繁殖に与える影響は異なり、それによって個体数変動の違いが生じていることが示唆された。

生姜抽出物の経口摂取による人でのエネルギー消費等を,冷え性気味の健常若年女性19人を対象としたランダム化交差比較試験により検討した.被験者は室温23~24℃,湿度30~40%の環境下において,(1)プラシーボ(澱粉),(2)生の生姜10 g相当,(3)生の生姜20 g相当をそれぞれ別の日にカプセルで摂取した.サンドイッチと適量の水をとった後,カプセルを飲み,1時間,2時間,3時間経過時に,エネルギー消費量,手と足の指先の体表温,脈拍数および収縮期・拡張期血圧の測定を行った.その結果,食事による影響を取り除いた生の生姜10 g相当摂取時は安静時に対する増加率で,1時間後7.4%,2時間後8.2%,3時間後6.6%で,1時間後を除いて有意な増加であった.また,生の生姜20 g相当摂取時のエネルギー消費量は1時間後10.5%,2時間後11.6%,3時間後8.6%と有意に増加した.結論として,人での研究において,生姜非摂取時に比べ,生姜摂取によってエネルギー消費量が有意に高まることが初めて明らかになった.
