The purpose of this paper is to consider the meaning of technology in the third chapter of Gulliver's Travels. In Swift's days the Scientific Revolution was completed. The scientific contents in Gulliver's Travels were almost derived from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. It seemed that Swift severely satirized the scientific studies in those days. But he satirized not the scientific studies themselves, but the biased man that forgets himself in them. Practically, while the technological advances can promote the welfare of mankind, they can blight it. In recent years the ethical education for the engineers starts in Japan. The Gulliver's Travels has the great meaning, in that it had already warned about the future of the technology in the 18th century.

There are many mysteries in the details of Gulliver's Travels. It seems that the description of the stage on which Gulliver let the Liliputian horses exercise is erroneous concerning its structure and size. But if we make thorough consideration, we can find out that Swift's description is rather correct. To make the stage we should put the sticks in the ground and make them slant a little, though this is not indicated clearly by the author. Also we can make use of the mysterious ninth stick at the centre of the whole structure as a support of the handkerchief. Though the stage can actually be built from Gulliver's handkerchief and thirteen sticks, it is still impossible to let the troop of twenty-four horses manuever on it when we adhere to the scale of 1 to 12. The field is too small for the cavalry. We need to interpret the latter half of the episode differently by means of a sur-realistic method. The episode resembles a Japanese rakugo-story, called 'Atama-Yama,' which means 'Head Hill.' In this fantastic story a man grows a cherry tree on his head and bewilderingly it is on his head too that many people gather to see the blossoms. The man's head and the crowd in 'Atama-Yama' correspond to the handkerchief and the horses in Gulliver's Travels. Behind the episode of the exercise on the handkerchief we can discover many points of significance. For example, the handkerchief probably means the Union Jack which represents the Union of England and Scotland accomplished by Queen Anne in 1707. We may assume that, as is demonstrated in this episode, there are numerous possible interpretations of many details in Gulliver's Travels.

複数のカメラで撮影した画像から、三次元空間中の点の三次元位置を、簡単に、そして、安定に推定する手法を提案する。従来の透視変換モデルを使うかわりに、アフィンカメラモデルを採用した。まず、複数のアフィンカメラで撮影された画像から、三次元空間の点の位置を線形な計算で推定できることを示す。次に、仮想的なアフィンカメラで撮影したのと等価になるように、現実のカメラで得られた画像を補正する方法を提案する。補正後の画像からは、三次元位置を線形な演算だけで推定することができる。This paper proposes a simple and robust method that estimates 3D position of the points from multiple cameras. Affine camera model is used instead of conventional perspective camera model. First we show that, using multiple cameras, the 3D position is estimated from the image coordinates by linear operation. Then, we assume that Affine cameras are virtually placed in the 3D space. The image coordinates of the real cameras are modified to coincide with those of the virtual Affine cameras. 3D positions of the points are linearly estimated from this modified image coordinates.

A distinctive dominance effect of the steady-state vowel /a/ sound in the non-verbal hemisphere in Western Ss was found by Tsunoda's tapping test. In contrast to these results, several studies carried out with Western Ss using Kimura's dichotic listening test did not show any distinctive tendency for the dominance effect of vowel sounds. In this experiment, the author intended to set up a tapping test analogous to the Kimura's test using syllables. Test subjects were 12 Westerners and 6 second-generation Japanese. The cerebral dominance of vowel /a/ without loading of /doop/ was non-dominant side, whereas in the loading condition, the original pattern disappered completely and a new pattern lateralized to the dominant hemisphere was observed. The grade of the dominancy shift of vowel sounds in the dichotic test mainly depends upon the experimental condition. If a technique free from the influence of the contralateral shift had been applied, more clear-cut results could have been obtained.

The veliger larvae of Anadara subcrenata (pl.1, fig.1, 2. text-fig.3) were identified by tracing back the prodissoconch on the umbonal portion of the young shell (text-fig.2). The smallest veliger the author traced back was 0.11×0.09mm (pl.1, fig.1). The full grown veliger measures 0.08×0.20-0.32×0.22mm in size, its colour is yellow and provided with a few bristles as well as about 10 nearly concentric lines on its surface (pl.1, fig.2, text-fig.3). The veliger larva of this species has much resemblance to that of the allied and concurrent species Anadara inflata, but can be distinguished from it by a sharper umbo, smaller number of concentric lines and larger size of the full grown veliger stage. The new dissoconch, which is formed after the larva has entered into the benthic life, is gray in colour and distinct from the prodissoconch (pl.1, fig.3, text-fig.2, 4, 5). When the young shell attains a length of about 1mm, the radiating striae numbers about 30, thus the shell acquires the characteristic of the species (text-fig.5). The young shells are found attaching to seaweeds, Bryozoans, dead shells, etc. by byssus-threads in their early stage (pl.1, fig.4), and later they enter into the life in the mud of the bottom.

前回の実験により, 被験者の主観的選択から求められたオフィス照明の最適な色温度は自然光に近似した変化を示すことが分かった. 今回は, 求められた色温度変動カーブによるアンビエント照明の制御と一般的な5000K一定の照明要件とを比較して心理·生理的影響の違いを評価した. 机上面照度はいずれも900lx一定とした. 実験は, 調色可能な照明器具が天井に埋設された無窓の部屋を使用した. 実験測定時間は07:30∼12:30及び13:30∼17:30の合計9時間とし, 主観評価, 生理データ(脳波, 心拍変動, 血圧等)を測定した. その結果, 自然光の色温度変化に近似した色温度変動照明要件は一般的な5000K一定の照明要件と比較し, 疲労感や眠気, 精神的な緊張の軽減をもたらす効果のあることが示唆された.

H・G・ウェルズの『モロー博士の島』(1896年)は、ダーウィンやT・H・ハクスリーの進化論思想を用いて分析されたり、またスウィフト的寓意として解釈されてきた。しかしこれらの批評には、このテクストが産み出された当時の歴史的状況に対する考察が欠けている。本稿では、『モロー博士の島』を社会的、政治的文脈のなかに位置づけ、当時の社会情勢がこのテクストのなかにどのように表れているかを分析した。ロンブローゾ、ウィリアム・ブース『暗黒のイングランドとその出口』、ノルダウ『退化』といったテクストを参照しながら、初稿と出版稿との比較、白人の登場人物の象徴的意味、物語の寓意的意味といった点を中心に分析し、『モロー博士の島』が、大英帝国の衰退に対する恐怖心から生まれたイデオロギー-世紀末大英帝国の人種退化、植民地主義、優生学をめぐる言説-の交錯し重なり合った重層的なテクストであることを論じた。
