From the Senzai vein of the Oe mine situated in southwestern Hokkaido, some kinds of rhodochrosite stalagmites are sometimes found out at the bottom of druse within the vein. The stalagmites show the shape of column, 2 to 30mm in diameter and 1 to 12cm in length. They consist of irregular fan-shaped crystals superficially and show the solution growth textures such as concentric bandings. These stalagmites have the chemical compositions of 53 to 89 mole % MnCO3, 2 to 20 mole % CaCO3. 7 to 26 mole % FeCO3 and 1 to 9 mole % MgCO3, which are mostly within the compositional region of drusy rhodochrosite of the vein. Chemical compositions of the rhodochrosite stalagmites change markedly with the concentric bands as shown in Fig. 7, which shows considerable increase of MnCO3 content from core to rim. This feature is considered as being due to chemical changes of the ore solution or ground water producing the rhodochrosite stalagmite.

Measurements of radon in water have been conducted by many investigators so far. While liquid scintillation counting is widely used for radon-in-water measurements in Japan, there are other available devices such as IM-fontactoscopes and atmospheric radon monitors with bubbling kits. In the present study, an intercomparison exercise was conducted for four devices using water samples with two different radon concentrations. The devices used are : a liquid scintillation counter, an IM-fontactoscope, a pulse ionization chamber with a bubbling kit and a radon monitor (which employs a silicon semiconductor detector) with a bubbling kit. As a result, there was a good agreement among the measured values for other devices than the IM-fontactoscope (differences were within±3%), The atmospheric radon monitors (with bubbling kits) could be useful for field surveys of radon-in-water, considering their portability. On the other hand, the values measured with the IM-fontactoscope deviated from other measure-ment values (47% for sample A and 22% for sample B) . The deviation might be caused by a calibration method for the IM-fontactoscope. Since the IM-fontactoscopes are used at some institutes in Japan even nowadays, it is necessary to check values measured with them for determination of radon-in-water concentrations.

This study aimed to examine the relationship among athletes’ envy, athletic events, and competitive level. A survey was conducted among 496 university athletes (428 men and 68 women). The results indicated that competitive level was positively associated with benign envy in competitive sports (open-skill sports), while no significant association between the two was observed in record sports (closed-skill sports). Moreover, athletic events and competitive level were not significantly associated with malicious envy. Therefore, envy scores differed depending on the athletic events, competitive level, and the combinations thereof.

本研究では,子どもの視点を考慮した絵本推薦システム構築のための基礎的準備として,子どもの好みと絵本の主題との関係性を捉える方法を検討した.実際に,34組の親子による絵本の読み聞かせ場面をビデオで撮影し,子どもの反応を記録した.次に,ビデオを分析し,反応の強弱によって子どもに好まれる絵本のページを特定した.最後に,各ページの主題を抽出し,子どもの好みと主題との関係性を分析した.その結果,21.4%のページには反応がなく子どもの好みとは無関係であることを示した.また,ページ毎に子どもの好みと主題とを結びつけて分析することで,より詳細な関係性を捉えられる可能性を示した.

We previously established an experimental system for efficient pathogenic signal induced-cell death using tobacco BY-2 cells and culture filtrate of a plant pathogenic bacterium, Erwinia carotovora. Using this experimental system, cytoskeletal and vacuolar changes during the process of filtrate-induced cell death were characterized in detail. However, the initial events induced by the filtrate were largely unknown. In this study, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and endocytosis stimulation were examined in BY-2 cells treated with the filtrate of E. carotovora. Transient ROS production within 2 min was observed after the filtrate treatment. Treatment with the Ca2+ chelator BAPTA or the protein kinase inhibitor K252a significantly inhibited ROS production in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that ROS production depends on Ca2+ influx or protein phosphorylation. In addition, internalization of the endocytic marker FM4-64 was promoted by filtrate treatment within 30 min, suggesting that the filtrate treatment stimulated endocytosis. These results showed that ROS production and subsequent endocytosis stimulation are the initial events induced by culture filtrate of E. carotovora in BY-2 cells.

The sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus, is widely distributed along all the coast of Japan. Commercially it is divided into three forms due to the body color, the green, red and black. Of these three, the former two are important, through they have a different market value. As for the taxonomy of this species, there are Stichopus japonicus and S. armata described by E. SELENKA (1867); S. japonicus var. typicus by H. THEEL (1886); and S. armatus and S. roseus by E. AUGUSTIN (1908). K. MITSUKURI (1897) and H. OHSHIMA (1918) made it clear that these were all but synonyms of the S. Japonicus and this remains still accepted. The two forms of the Green and the Red, on the other hand, were first reported by K. MITSUKURI (1912) and were ascribed by the same author to a color variation due to the difference in habitat and thereafter his opinion has been widely accepted by the investigators. Between these two forms, however, there are found some distinct differences, not only morphological but also ecological. The present authors have studied this problem and hereby propose to separate them into two independent communities, ecologically and taxonomically different from each other with the following grounds: 1) The predominant color of the Green is dark bluish green, which varies with individuals from light bluish green to yellowish brown or dark brown. The key tone for the Red is red or brownish red, and the ventrum being in red without exception and to be its characteristic. There are, though very low in their occurrence (no more than 1 to 2 per cent), some intermediate forms with the dorsum similar to the Green and the ventrum similar to the Red, and vice versa. 2) The Polian vesicles of the Green are usually of stumpy shape with dully round tip, while those of the Red are slender with projected tip. 3) The body contractibility of the Red is remarkable and under a mechanical stimulus, for example, it contracts into an almost round shape, while no such habit is observed with the Green. 4) The shape of the ossicles of tentacles is much more complicated in the Red than the Green, whereas the disk of the tables of the former is more round-shaped and the circum-ference of its holes is broader than the latter. As for the size of the disk of tables, when compared with individuals of the same body weight, the Green wins over the Red. 5) The Green has a preference to somewhat lower salinity and eventually finds its favorite habitat on sand and muddy-sand grounds, while the Red with fondness for higher salinity lives mainly in the rock, pebble and gravel grounds. 6) The matured egg of the Red has a gelatinous coating 23-26 microns thick, while the Green has without it. In the coasts of Mie and Aichi Pref., the spawning period of the Red is earlier and shorter than that of the Green. 7) In view of the modes of reaction to the environments, such as growth and adaptation for salinity, the Green and the Red are judged to belong to a different environment, respectively. 8) In summer season when the water temperature is high, almost all of the Red take aestivation, on the contrary 50 per cent of the Green of 6 to 30gr. (weight of body-wall) and 75 per cent of the grown-up are found in aestivation, and younglings of less than 5gr. totally dispense with it.

Diversity of vocabulary is high in the agricultural domain by the people different in a background such as farmer, distribution processor, researcher, and so forth. The diversity is a hurdle to share and exchange agricultural information. In order to lower this hurdle in Thailand, we considered to create the common agricultural vocabulary (CAVOC) in Thai. To realize this, we created the CAVOC translator. It is a mechanism to translate based on CAVOC in English and Japanese defined by Japanese research group. As a result, we confirmed that our system can easily create CAVOC in Thai, and eliminate obvious mistakes.

Karo Obi, this name has been well known as the architect who got the first prize in the design competition of the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Hall held in 1926. So far, the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Hall has been regarded as the first Imperial Crown Style (TEIKAN-YOSHIKI) building. Owing to his father's advice, he modified the tower of this building from Buddhism five-storied pagoda. This thesis shows the summary of Obi's whole life with background situation to create this eclecticism design and the relation between Imperial Crown Style public buildings and great architect Toshikata Sano.

腸内常在菌の代謝産物の研究は少ない。我々は、数多く存在する腸内常在菌の代謝産物の中から、細胞の増殖や分化に関与し、非常に多岐に渡る機能を有するポリアミン(PA)に着目してきた。特に、PA の有する①抗炎症作用、②核酸安定化作用、③腸管バリア機能の充実化作用、④オートファジー促進作用、は健康と疾病に密接に関与している。腸管内PA 濃度を上昇させるBifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LKM512 を10 ヶ月齢マウスに週3 回、約1 年間LKM512 を投与した結果、腸内PA 濃度の上昇と共に寿命伸長効果が得られた。演者らが知る限り、カロリー制限無しでの哺乳類に対する寿命伸長効果が得られた食品成分は、レスベラトロールに次ぐ報告であり重要な知見である。本稿では、この効果の詳細を解説すると共に、今後の腸内常在菌の代謝産物の研究にとって強力なツールとなると考えられるキャピラリー電気泳動と飛行時間型質量分析装置(CE-TOF MS)によるメタボロミクス解析について紹介する。

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is main treatment for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, restenosis caused by PCI-induced injury influences the outcome of patients. Linagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, has been reported to ameliorate intimal hyperplasia post vascular injury. The underlying mechanisms by which linagliptin protects against balloon injury are unclear and require to be explored. Herein, Wistar rats with carotid artery balloon injury were given 1, 2 or 3 mg/kg/day linagliprin for 6 weeks. We found that linagliptin attenuated vascular injury-mediated neointima formation in rats without affecting body weight and blood glucose levels. ELISA results indicated that linagliptin significantly reduced overproduction of cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-6 post balloon injury. By detecting the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), we found that linagliptin prevented balloon injury-induced oxidative stress. Additionally, linagliptin decreased the level of Kelch ECH-associating protein 1 (KEAP1) compared with injury group. Results of Western blots and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) demonstrated that linagliptin augmented nuclear accumulation of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and its binding ability to target genes in rats with balloon injury. Moreover, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H quinine oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), two downstream targets of NRF2, were further up-regulated after linagliptin treatment compared with injury group. In conclusion, our data suggest that linagliptin protects carotid artery from balloon injury-induced neointima formation and activates the NRF2 antioxidant pathway.

代謝産物とその代謝経路に関する我々の知識は、天然物のほんの一部に過ぎない。既知酵素のリストであるIUBMB Enzyme List は参照経路に基づく代謝経路再構築の基礎である。ところがこのストラテジーは生物種固有の天然物生合成経路や、環境汚染物質の生分解経路には本質的に向いていない。近年私は代謝経路のde novo再構築として、新規化合物を生成するアプローチとは別に、機械学習を用いて既知化合物間を酵素反応でつなぐアプローチを開発した。また、その反応を触媒する酵素の予測として、化学構造からのECサブサブクラス予測手法と、化学構造からの酵素タンパク質予測手法を開発した。これらの研究は有機合成戦略の問題と類似した問題であり共通部分も多いが、利用可能な情報や、取ることができる戦略などの違いがあるのでそれを理解することが大変重要である。

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors are widely used as antidiabetic drugs. We recently reported that DPP-4 inhibition has beneficial effects on heart failure (HF) mice model. Furthermore, we confirmed that myocardial DPP-4 activity was significantly increased in HF mice compared with non-HF mice. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of myocardial CD26 (DPP-4) expression and its association to clinical parameters in HF patients.Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) specimens (n = 33) were obtained from HF patients who were admitted to Chiba University Hospital from June 2006 to July 2012. EMB specimens were fixed in formaldehyde and stained with Masson's trichrome staining or with anti-CD26 antibody. Patients were divided into the high CD26 density (CD26-H) or low CD26 density groups (CD26-L). DPP-4 density was compared with blood brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level and echocardiographic parameters at one year after EMB. Although there were no significant differences in echocardiographic parameters between the CD26-H group and CD26-L group, blood BNP levels were higher in the CD26-H group than in the CD26-L group at one year after EMB. Multivariate regression analysis showed that CD26 density was also an independent determinant of blood BNP levels at one year after EMB.The level of myocardial CD26 expression might be a predictive marker of prognosis in patients with HF.

現行の表面吸水試験では,測定結果から得られる10分時点での表面吸水速度を評価基準に用いている。本研究では,3種類の水セメント比のコンクリートを用いた促進凍結融解試験による様々な劣化の程度の供試体に対して,10分時点での表面吸水速度と10分間の吸水量が比例関係を示すことが分かった。これまでに提案されている品質評価のしきい値により,W/Cが55~75%のコンクリートの凍結融解作用による劣化の程度を評価可能であると考えられる。さらに,測定時間の短縮について検討し,1分から10分の間の任意の測定時間において,現行の10分時点での評価と同じ評価結果をもたらす評価指標を提案した。
