Psychoactive drug overdoses are life-threatening and require prompt and proper treatment in the emergency room to minimize morbidity and mortality. Prompt identification of the ingested psychoactive drugs is challenging, since witness recall is unreliable and patients’ symptoms do not necessarily explain their loss of consciousness. Gas and liquid chromatography mass spectrometric analyses have been the traditionally employed methods to detect and identify abused substances; however, these techniques are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this study, thermal desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, an ambient mass spectrometric technique, was applied to rapidly characterize flunitrazepam, lysergic acid diethylamide, and 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine in drained gastric lavage fluid, and ketamine, cocaine, amphetamine and norketamine in whole blood samples. No pretreatment of the gastric lavage fluid specimens was required and the entire analytical process took less than 30 s per specimen. Liquid–liquid extraction, followed by centrifugation, was performed on the whole blood samples. The corresponding compounds were identified through matching the obtained mass spectrometric data with those provided by commercial databases. The limits-of-detection of the tested drugs in both drained gastric lavage fluid and whole blood samples are at sub ppm levels. This is sensitive enough for emergency medical application, since the quantities of medications ingested by overdosed abusers are much higher than the amounts that were tested.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, are promising inorganic nanomaterials for future biomedical applications due to their low toxicity and unique magnetic properties. However, the synthesis of these particles can often be expensive, energy intensive, and non-scalable, requiring the addition of surfactants to stabilize the material to control the particle size and avoid agglomeration. We wish to report a simple, green, surfactant-free electrochemical synthesis of these materials using a closed aqueous system at ambient temperature. Particle diameter, between 19 and 33 nm, was controlled by simply modifying the distance between the electrodes. These magnetite nanoparticles were then fully characterized using both spectroscopy and microscopy. Vibrational magnetometry indicates that as the size of the particle decreases, the magnetic hysteretic gap decreases, although for samples below 25 nm no inter-sample difference was observed. To support this experimental data, we carried out a Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis of magnetite containing more than three iron atoms in the cluster, an essential proposition as magnetite contains three distinct iron species. These calculations were used to support the experimental observations, and closely reproduced both the experimental IR spectrum, and the XRD pattern. In vitro cytotoxicity assays showed dose responsive behavior for the nanoparticles, and demonstrated that they are non-toxic at clinically relevant concentrations; below 200 μg/mL we observed no toxicity in a 48-hour standard assay. This work represents the first DFT based simulation of this detailed magnetite cluster, and demonstrates that this sustainable synthetic method is capable of producing nanomaterials with a physical and biological profile that might make them suitable for biomedical applications. There have been several studies on object detection and activity recognition on a table conducted thus far. Most of these studies use image processing with cameras or a specially configured table with electrodes and an RFID reader. In private homes, methods using cameras are not preferable since cameras might invade the privacy of inhabitants and give them the impression of being monitored. In addition, it is difficult to apply the specially configured system to off-the-shelf tables. In this work, we propose a system that recognizes activities conducted on a table and identifies which user conducted the activities with load cells only. The proposed system uses four load cells installed on the four corners of the table or under the four legs of the table. User privacy is protected because only the data on actions through the load cells is obtained. Load cells are easily installed on off-the-shelf tables with four legs and installing our system does not change the appearance of the table. The results of experiments using a table we manufactured revealed that the weight error was 38g, the position error was 6.8cm, the average recall of recognition for four activities was 0.96, and the average recalls of user identification were 0.65 for ten users and 0.89 for four users.

Pharmacogenetic information in the package insert was reviewed. Most of the information was gene polymorphisms for the drug metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome-P450 (CYP) and UDP-glucuronyl transferase(UGT), which alter the pharmacokinetics for substrate drugs resulting in individual variation of drug response including efficacy and adverse effects. In the typical substrates for these enzymes (proton pump inhibitors, clopidogrel, irinotecan and warfarin), difference in the pharmacological efficacy and side effects are discussed among the patients groups carrying different genotypes. HLA types identified for drug-induced serious dermatitis and hypersensitivity for abacavir, carbanazepine and alloprinol are also included in this review.

1930年代までの日本建築史では曖昧にしか語れなかった日本美について明確に提唱した二人の建築家がいた。岸田日出刀(1899-1966)とブルーノ・タウト(1880-1938)である。岸田は1929年に文と写真による日本美を「過去の構成」の出版で示した。タウトは1933年に来日し、日本美について書いたものを「ニッポン」の題名で1934年に出版した。両氏が取り上げた日本美は、伊勢神宮、桂離宮、京都御所、弧逢庵など殆どがお互いに共通しており、共に日本美の聖地として永遠性を認めていた。このことは岸田の動機によることが大きく、タウトよりいち早く日本美を発見した岸田日出刀を高く評価すべきと考える。

近年,熱帯地域では,森林から農地への転換によって表層土壌が失われ,土壌の劣化が深刻化している。土壌微生物は物質循環などの土壌の生態系機能を担っていることから,環境変化や人為的攪乱に対する土壌微生物群集の変動を理解することは重要である。しかしながら,農業活動が土壌微生物群集にどのような影響を与えているのか明らかにされていない点が多い。本解説では,耕起や施肥などの農業活動が土壌微生物群集に与える影響に関する既存研究をまとめ,熱帯地域における持続可能な農業活動のための研究の方向性について議論したい。

Protein-protein interactions are fundamental for all biological phenomena. The hub proteins interacting with a number of partner proteins play the vital role in the protein-protein interaction network. We investigated the subcellular localization of proteins in the network, and found that the proteins localized in the multiple subcellular compartments, especially the nucleus and cytoplasm, tend to be hub proteins. Examination on keywords associated with the proteins suggested that those related to post-translational modifications (PTMs) and transcriptions contributed to numerous interactions. Triggered by PTMs in the intrinsically disordered regions, they change interaction partners in the protein complex, and are translocated from cytoplasm to nucleus.

Reaction of 2', 3', 5'-tri-O-benzoyluridine (3) with 1-methylimidazole in the presence of phosphoryl chloride in acetonitrile afforded 3-methyl-1-imidazolium intermediate (4), from which a variety of 4-substituted pyrimidin-2 (1H)-one ribosides (5-12) were obtained in a one-pot manner by nucleophilic substitutions under mild conditions. Application of this method to 2'-deoxyriboside of several pyrimidines (13a, b, c) is also described.

Various derivatives of 5-fluoro-5, 6-dihydrouracil with an alkoxycarbonyl, substituted carbamoyl, or cyano group at C-5, and one of a variety of substituents, i.e., alkoxy, substituted mercapto, substituted amino, acyl amino, and alkylidene- and arylideneaminooxy at C-6, have been synthesized as a class of potential pro-drugs of autitumor agents, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and 1-(2-tetrahydrofuryl)-5-fluorouracil (Ftorafur). Antitumor activity of these compounds against leukemia P388 or L1210 in mice and antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea are described.

Objective Coagulase-negative staphylococci are among the most frequently isolated microorganisms in blood cultures. The aim of this study was to assess [1] the clinical characteristics of methicillin-resistant, coagulase-negative staphylococci bacteremia and [2] the susceptibility of the isolated bacteria to glycopeptides. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 70 patients from whom methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci had been isolated at Osaka City University Hospital between January 2010 and December 2013. We evaluated the patients' background, severity and prognosis of the disease, and the susceptibility of the isolated methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci to glycopeptides. Results Out of the 70 patients tested, 28 (40.0%) had leukemia, and 36 (51.4%) had been treated for febrile neutropenia. Infection with Staphylococcus epidermidis accounted for 78.6% of patients. Thirty-nine cases (55.7%) were related to intravascular catheters, and 39 (55.7%) were treated using teicoplanin as a first-line therapy. The 30-day mortality rate was 4.3%. Regarding susceptibility, 20% of all isolates were non-susceptible to teicoplanin. According to multivariate analyses, it was observed that premedication using glycopeptides was independently associated with teicoplanin non-susceptibility (p=0.03; hazard ratio = 5.64; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-26.76). Conclusion Our results suggest that clinicians must use glycopeptides appropriately to prevent the development of further antibiotic resistance in methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci.

This study examined the relationships between the reasons for confessions and interviewing styles by administering a self-reported questionnaire to new male adult prison inmates across Japan. The three factors proposed by Gudjonsson and his colleagues (1991, 1992, 1994, 1999), namely, perception of proof, internal pressure, and external pressure, were investigated. When participants had decided to confess prior to interviews, they were more likely to confess due to perception of proof and internal pressure compared to their counterparts. Furthermore, participants who experienced a relationship-focused interviewing style, which stressed active listening and rapport-building while talking about the criminal incidents directly, were more likely to confess due to internal pressure and less likely to confess due to external pressure.

The effects of the motivational states of public speakers, such as rejection avoidance needs, as well as the presence or absence of an audience on psychophysiological responses when expecting to make a speech were investigated. Participants delivered a three-minute speech in a room with or without an audience. Participants completed the General Affects Scales before and after the speech, and the negative affect (NA) subscale scores of the scale were used to assess their psychological state. Salivary cortisol level was measured before and after the speech as an index of their physiological response. The results indicated that speakers with high rejection avoidance needs had greater NA prior to the speech regardless of the presence or absence of an audience. Moreover, they had increased cortisol levels only when speaking in front of an audience. Speakers with low rejection avoidance needs had greater NA when speaking in front of an audience, whereas they did not show increased cortisol levels, regardless of the presence or absence of an audience. These results suggest that when a speaker expects to deliver a speech, the speaker's motivational state and the presence or absence of an audience interactively cause changes in psychophysiological responses.

In this work, we directly observed the reaction distribution formed in a composite cathode of the all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLIB) LiCoO2/Li2.2C0.8B0.2O3|Li2.2C0.8B0.2O3|PEO|Li during charging by using the two-dimensional X-ray absorption spectroscopy (2D-XAS) at Co K-edge. The two-dimensional mapping of the state of charge in a composite cathode indicated that the reaction distribution was formed during charging process in the in-plane direction due to the disconnection in electron pathway at cracks. It was experimentally confirmed that the 2D-XAS technique was a useful tool for evaluating the reaction distribution in a composite cathode of an ASSLIB and investigating the influence factors for the formation of the reaction distribution.

音叉の振動エネルギーの一部分は音のエネルギーとして空気中に放出される.また,音叉に共鳴箱を近づけると大きな共鳴音が聞こえる.この場合には音叉のエネルギー消費は当然大きくなり,振動の減衰も早くなる.音叉の振動エネルギーが消費される行く先として,(1)音叉から直接空気中に放出される音のエネルギー,(2)音叉の内部吸収などによるロスエネルギー,(3)共鳴箱の効果によって放出されるエネルギー,の3種類が考えられる.そこで,音叉が1周期振動する間に消費されるこの3種類のエネルギーの割合を求める実験を行った.そのために,共鳴箱の有無及び空気の有無による音叉の減衰時間のちがいを測定した.その結果の一例として,音叉の消費エネルギーは先の順番でおおよそ1:5:22の割合となった.また,共鳴箱のある場合に音叉の音の可聴時間が共鳴箱のない場合の時間に比べて長く感じることがありうることを実験データを使って解析した.なお,減衰時間の測定は,音叉の振幅が半減する間の振動の回数を自動的に数える装置を考案して行った。
