A new species, Actinodaphne lambirensis Tagane, Yahara & N. Okabe (Lauraceae) from Lambir Hills National Park, Miri District, Sarawak, Malaysia, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by glabrous twigs and leaves, small lamina (4.3–9.2 × 1.7–2.8 cm), and long fruiting peduncles. Because only fruiting specimens were available, the position of A. lambirensis was determined by the phylogenetic trees based on 22 species of Actinodaphne, including the type species of the genus, A. pruinosa Nees, and 11 species of Neolitsea from Southeast Asia using multiplexed inter-simple sequence repeats genotyping by sequencing (MIG-seq). Additionally, a phylogenetic tree was constructed using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences for 36 species of Actinodaphne and 40 species of Neolitsea that include our MIGseq samples and additional species for which ITS sequences were determined in previous studies. Both the MIG-seq tree and ITS tree supported A. lambirensis as belonging with Actinodaphne.

Luciferases have been widely utilized as sensitive reporters to monitor gene expression and protein-protein interactions. Compared to firefly luciferase (Fluc), a recently developed luciferase, Nanoluciferase (NanoLuc or Nluc), has several superior properties such as a smaller size and stronger luminescence activity. We compared the reporter properties of Nluc and Fluc in rice (Oryza sativa). In both plant-based two-hybrid and split luc complementation (SLC) assays, Nluc activity was detected with higher sensitivity and specificity than that with Fluc. To apply Nluc to research involving the photoperiodic regulation of flowering, we made a knock-in rice plant in which the Nluc coding region was inserted in-frame with the OsMADS15 gene, a target of the rice florigen Hd3a. Strong Nluc activity in response to Hd3a, and in response to change in day length, was detected in rice protoplasts and in a single shoot apical meristem, respectively. Our results indicate that Nluc assay systems will be powerful tools to monitor gene expression and protein-protein interaction in plant research.

This article examines the relationships between the changes and continuities of Indonesian local politics and Chinese Indonesian business practices in the post- Suharto era, focusing on Chinese Indonesian businesses in two of the largest Indonesian cities, Medan and Surabaya. The fall of Suharto in May 1998 led to the opening up of a democratic and liberal space as well as the removal of many discriminatory measures against the Chinese minority. However, due to the absence of an effective, genuinely reformist party or political coalition, predatory politicalbusiness interests nurtured under Suharto's New Order managed to capture the new political and economic regimes. As a result, corruption and internal mismanagement continue to plague the bureaucracy in the country and devolve from the central to the local governments. This article argues that this is due partially to the role some Chinese businesspeople have played in perpetuating corrupt business practices. As targets of extortion and corruption by bureaucratic officials and youth/crime organizations, Chinese businesspeople are not merely passive and powerless victims of corrupt practices. This article argues, through a combination of Anthony Giddens's structure-agency theory as well as Pierre Bourdieu's notion of habitus and field, that although Chinese businesspeople are constrained by the muddy and corrupt business environment, they have also played an active role in shaping such a business environment. They have thus played an active role in shaping local politics, which is infused with corruption and institutionalized gangsterism, as well as perpetuating their increasingly ambivalent position.

The increasing demands of computational power have accelerated the development of 3D circuits in the semiconductor industry. To resolve the accompanying thermal issues, two-phase microchannel heat exchangers using have emerged as one of the promising solutions for cooling purposes. However, the direct boiling in microchannels and rapid bubble growth give rise to highly unstable heat flux on the channel walls. In this regard, it is hence desired to control the supply of vapor bubbles for the elimination of the instability. In this research, we investigate a controllable bubble generation technique, which is capable of periodically producing bubble seeds at the sub-micron scale. These nanobubbles were generated in a solid-state nanopore filled with a highly concentrated electrolyte solution. As an external electric field was applied, the localized Joule heating inside the nanopore initiated the homogeneous bubble nucleation. The bubble dynamics was analyzed by measuring the ionic current variation through the nanopore during the bubble nucleation and growth. Meanwhile, we theoretically examined the bubble growth and collapse inside the nanopore by a moving boundary model. In both approaches, we demonstrated that by altering the pore size, the available sensible heat for the bubble growth can be manipulated, thereby offering the controllability of the bubble size. This unique characteristic renders nanopores suitable as a nanobubble emitter for microchannel heat exchangers, paving the way for the next generation microelectronic cooling applications.

Targeting to East Asian summer monsoon for the first time, this study presents an assessment of projection uncertainty in ensemble dynamical downscaling (DDS) simulations. Based on 12-member DDS simulations comprised of three global climate models (GCMs) and four regional climate models (RCMs), we evaluate contributions of GCM and RCM uncertainty to the total uncertainty of summer-time precipitation projections around Japan. Our results show that contribution of RCM uncertainty can be comparable to that of GCM uncertainty in magnitudes. This finding draws a distinction from the past studies showing the dominance of GCM uncertainty. Most notably, our results show that RCM uncertainty for number of precipitating days appears around and over the land. RCM uncertainty for precipitation amounts also shows a dependence on topography but to a lessor degree. These RCM uncertainty characteristics are potentially linked to the difference in various RCM configurations such as physics schemes and model topography. In contrast, GCM uncertainty mostly appears over the ocean, which can be attributed to the difference in the GCM's future projections of East Asian summer monsoon. Our finding may be of an importance for water disaster and water resource management with DDS.

The Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred on March 11, 2011, and its subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, prompted implementation of the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination (TUE) program as a part of the Fukushima Health Management Survey. The purpose of this program is to support residents of Fukushima Prefecture, and to analyze the health effects of the released radionuclides. Regardless of relatively high participation rates and a well-planned diagnostic flow, it is conceivable that not all thyroid cancer cases can be detected by the TUE program. The aims of the present study were to identify and characterize these “outside” cases, targeting patients at Fukushima Medical University (FMU) Hospital. As of June 30, 2017, we have successfully identified 11 outside cases. These corresponded to 5.7% of the 194 subjects who were identified as having thyroid cancer or suspected thyroid cancer in the TUE program. Although the outside subjects of other institutes were not investigated, the present study may have identified the majority of outside subjects in Japan, considering that FMU Hospital treats a large number of thyroid cancer subjects. Furthermore, the characteristics of the 11 subjects were not different from those of the subjects identified in the TUE program. These findings confirm that the TUE program was able to identify subjects of thyroid cancer adequately and sufficiently.

The Japanese Archipelago stretches approximately 3,000 kilometers from Hokkaido in the north to the Ryukyu Islands in the south, and has seen human activity since at least 30 thousand years ago (KYA). The Jomon period from 16 to 3 KYA is associated with cord-marked pottery and the people at that time, who were hunter-gatherers, occupied a range of locations across the Japanese Archipelago. The Yayoi period from 3 to 1.7 KYA saw the introduction of migrants from the Asian Continent who brought rice agriculture to the archipelago. The dual-structure model, which is based on craniofacial measurements, proposes that admixture between the Jomon and Yayoi people resulted in current-day Japanese. Subsequent genetic studies using uniparental and autosomal markers in current-day and ancient human samples are widely in support of the dual-structure model. These genetic data have also unveiled the uniqueness of the indigenous Ainu and Ryukyuan people while further demonstrating the genetic substructure within the Mainland Japanese.

To examine outbreaks of mange in raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) with respect to population density, we analyzed camera trap videos, and isolated mites from raccoon dog carcasses. In a camera trapping survey, we categorized the skin condition of raccoon dogs, and used a number of independent videos to calculate the relative abundance index (RAI). The RAI of raccoon dogs with alopecia increased following an increase in the RAI of those without alopecia. Among 27 raccoon dog carcasses, 12 showed mange-compatible skin lesions. Sarcoptes scabiei was isolated from 11 of these raccoon dogs, indicating that sarcoptic mange was endemic in our study area. Therefore, a high relative population density may be a factor underlying epizootics of sarcoptic mange in raccoon dogs.

台風の移動の基礎的な理解はかなり成熟しているが、注目に値する研究の進展が近年も見られる。本論文では、単純化された順圧モデル・精緻な物理モデル・データ解析によって、主に2014年以降に得られた台風の移動に関する新しい概念や既存の概念に関する新たな知見を集約する。これには、台風の移動に関する環境場と台風の相互作用、および、予測可能性の研究を含んでいる。指向流・βジャイア・非断熱加熱といった従来の概念は依然として重要であるが、台風の進路を説明するメカニズムをより正確に理解することは、さらなる進路予報の精度向上に向けて、重要な基礎をなすであろう。

図的ユーザインタフェースの一種として,アイコンで様々な対象を表現し操作するWIMP[1]インタフェースがある.WIMPインタフェースでアイコンに対する操作を指示するやり方(操作選択方式)としてメニュー,ドラグ&ドロップ,キー操作などがあるが,これらの間には,操作時間が短いものは柔軟性や分かりやすさに欠け,柔軟で分かりやすいものは操作時間が長いというトレードオフがある.筆者らはドラグ&ドロップの改良版として「アイコン投げ」(ドラグの途中でマウスボタンを離してもアイコンがこれまでの速度と方向で目的地に向かって移動し続ける方式)に注目し,その操作時間について実験と検討を行った.実験の結果,「アイコン投げ」インタフェースはメニュー,パレット,ドラグ&ドロップなどのマウスによる選択方法より有意に高速であり,誤り率も他の方法と比べて遜色ないため,図的インタフェースの基本操作として有望である.

For reconstructing CT images in the clinical setting, ‘effective energy’ is usually used instead of the total X-ray spectrum. This approximation causes an accuracy decline. We proposed to quantize the total X-ray spectrum into irregular intervals to preserve accuracy. A phantom consisting of the skull, rib bone, and lung tissues was irradiated with CT configuration in GATE/GEANT4. We applied inverse Radon transform to the obtained Sinogram to construct a Pixel-based Attenuation Matrix (PAM). PAM was then used to weight the calculated Hounsfield unit scale (HU) of each interval's representative energy. Finally, we multiplied the associated normalized photon flux of each interval to the calculated HUs. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated in the course of Complexity and Visual analysis. Entropy measurements, Kolmogorov complexity, and morphological richness were calculated to evaluate the complexity. Quantitative visual criteria (i.e., PSNR, FSIM, SSIM, and MSE) were reported to show the effectiveness of the fuzzy C-means approach in the segmenting task.

On 14 June 2015, a severe afternoon thunderstorm event developed within the Taipei basin, which produced intense rainfall (with rainfall rate of 131 mm h−1) and urban-scale flooding. Cloud-resolving simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were performed to capture reasonably well the onset of sea breeze, the development and evolution of this afternoon thunderstorm system. The WRF model had four nested grids (with the finest grid size of 0.5 km) in the horizontal and 55 layers in the vertical to explicitly resolve the deep convection over complex terrain.  It is found that convection was initiated both by sea breeze at foothill and by upslope wind at mountain peak. Convective available potential energy (CAPE) was increased from 800 to 3200 J kg−1 with abundant moisture transport by the sea breeze from 08 to 12 LST, fueling large thermodynamic instability for the development of afternoon thunderstorm. Strong convergence between sea breeze and cold-air outflow triggered further development of intense convection, resulting in heavy rainfall over Taipei city.  Microphysics sensitivity experiments show that evaporative cooling played a major role in the propagation of cold-air outflow and the production of heavy rainfall within basin plain (terrain height < 100 m), while melting cooling played a minor role. The terrain-removal experiment indicates that the local topography of Mount Datun at coastal region may produce the channel effect through Danshui River Valley, intensify sea-breeze circulation and transport more moisture. This terrain-induced modification of sea breeze circulation made its dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics more favorable for convection development, resulting in stronger afternoon thunderstorm system with heavier rainfall within the Taipei City.

目的 : 子宮頚癌予防ワクチンに対する被接種者・保護者の意識, 知識を調査する.方法 : 岐阜県のプライマリ・ケア関連施設で子宮頚癌予防ワクチンの情報源, 接種決定者, 知識, 癌検診等を被接種者・保護者にアンケート調査した.結果 : 被接種者66人, 保護者57人より回答を得た. 情報源について被接種者は学校, 家族が多く, 保護者は自治体からの連絡, テレビが多かった. 接種決定に被接種者が関わったのは約半数であった. 接種に躊躇いがあったのは15%で全員が痛みを理由にあげ流産や不妊が不安との回答はなかった. 子宮頸癌の原因を知っていたのは被接種者15%, 保護者54%, 感染源を知っていたのは被接種者41%, 保護者79%, 子宮頸癌検診を知っていたのは被接種者21%, 保護者63%で, 接種後も検診を受けた方がよいと回答したのは被接種者71%, 保護者90%であった.結論 : 子宮頚癌, 癌検診に対する知識は十分ではなく, 情報提供を行い理解度を深めていくことが重要である.

Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are generally recognized as safe. It has been used to increase the shelf-life of fermented products, and its antimicrobial action is based on the metabolites secretions, such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, reuterin, bacteriocins and the like-bacteriocins substances. It has been proven that LAB are able to inhibit deteriorating bacteria of raw meat, but improper handling of live cultures could lead to spoilage. So, the use of their bacteriocins, small antimicrobial peptides, could be an alternative. Besides reducing the number of spoilage bacteria, it seeks to inhibit pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli and Listeria. The food industry uses few bacteriocins and now bacterial resistance has been reported. For that reason, the search of novel bacteriocins produced by LAB is a priority. Moreover, the natural microbiota of meat could be a reservoir of LAB.

ノラ猫問題を解決する一つの対策として地域猫活動が各地で行われており,一部の行政でその活動を支援している。そこで,その支援状況とその効果を検討するために,全国の自治体を対象として調査用紙を配布し,2008年度における情報を収集した。その結果,東京都特別区で地域猫活動を支援する行政が多く認められた。また,政令指定都市,中核市および都道府県のいずれの行政でも地域猫活動の地域がないと回答したところが多かった。条例や制度,避妊去勢手術費の補助,講習会開催等の支援措置は,東京都特別区および東京都市部で多く,中核市および都道府県では少ない状況であった。今回の調査では地域猫活動を行政が支援することが,猫に関する苦情の減少,猫の処分数の減少,また住民間の親密の増加等に対して有効であるかどうかについては明らかにならなかったものの,行政機関がノラ猫対策を早めにとることや,その支援を積極的に行うことなどが,猫の処分数を減らすのに有効である可能性が示唆された。Activities by community volunteers who care for stray cats, such as neutering and caring for stray cats, were supported at various administrative levels in Japan. In order to identify the status of the activities in which support is provided by the administrations and to assess the effect, we conducted a questionnaire survey to each government in 2008. The activities to support volunteer activities related to stray cats was significantly higher in the 23 wards of Tokyo than in other cities in Tokyo. Many of the local administrations did not have information about whether there were any such activities. There were significantly more administrations in the 23 wards of Tokyo and the other cities in Tokyo than in local administrations, which supported the activities such as enacting ordinances and animal protection promotion plans, and providing financial assistance to cover the cost of sterilization surgeries. This study could not clarify the effects of these support activities on reducing the number of and the nuisances caused by stray cats. However, it was suggested that efforts at the early period by every administration to assess the situation of stray cats and offer support activities would make the animal protection plans more effective.
