In Japan, a married couple must use the same surname to comply with the civil code, and the wife takes her husband’s surname in more than 95 % of married couples. We hypothesized that ambivalent sexism, including hostile and benevolent sexism, is related to the preferred surname choice among unmarried men and women. We discovered the following results. First, men showed averseness to changing their surnames, while women showed acceptance. Second, individuals strongly endorsing hostile sexism were more likely to accept changing their surnames than those endorsing it weakly. Third, men strongly supporting benevolent sexism refused to change their surnames. The relationships between ambivalent sexism and surname choice in Japan were discussed.

The circadian clock, an internal timekeeping system created and utilized by organisms adapting to the Earth’s Rotation, is driven by the rhythmic chemical reaction cycles of biomolecules such as clock proteins and clock genes. The cyanobacterial clock system is composed of three clock proteins, KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC, which concert the circadian rhythms even in the test tube in the presence of adenosine-tri-phosphate(ATP). KaiC orchestrates the rhythm through an ATP hydrolysis(ATPase cycle)and auto-phosphorylation/dephosphorylation(Phospho-cycle). The N-terminal ring of functional KaiC hexamer determines the clock speed during the ATPase cycle, while another C-terminal ring changes phosphorylation status like time stamps during Phospho-cycle. Structural biology has been investigating the origin of the circadian rhythm in the KaiC double-ring structure for a quarter century. We conducted the comprehensive structural analyses on KaiC and finally identified structural factors that ensure the smooth and tight communication between those distant two catalytic sites, which is critical for the rhythmicity. We also revealed that the time information is propagated to the entire cell through the rearrangement of the KaiC double ring and the assembly/disassembly of KaiA and KaiB.

Grain refimng and plasticity induced by martensitic transformation are thought to be important for developing high strength steels with ductility. The phenomena are connected with the nucleation process of martensite, although the nucleation mechanism of martensite has been still obscure.In order to get some infbrmations of the nucleation effects of small pre-strain and austenitizing conditions on γ→α martensitic transformation of iron alloys have been investigated by measuring electric resistivity and hardness, and by optical-and electron-microscopy. A part of experimental results have been analyzed numerically by reaction rate equation. Merits and demerits of hitherto suggested models of martensitic nucleation are discussed comparing with the results of thiswork and adirection of future investigation is proposed.

We shall come across the Manichaean texts of the Middle Persian, Coptic, Greek, and Arabian. In these texts specially we find several words, Nrjmyg, SAIŠ Συζυγος, Tawm as the Mediator between the Father of Light and the Apostle (Mani). The six translations of these words is (1) Twin or Pair, (2) Familiar, (3) Double, (4) Companion, (5) Consort, (6) Angel. The texts about these words is the Middle Persian fragmentary texts “M49 II”, Coptic texts “Manichäische Homilien”, “Manichaean Psalm-Book” and “Kephalaia” and new Greek texts “Kölner Codex”.From these texts I may conclude that the Twin as the Mediator of Mani was angelic. As to this conception of the Mediator there are some difference between his first and second revelation. Above all, in the period of the second revelation, the conception of the Mediator changed from Angel to Twin or Pair-Companion.When he entered upon his mission, the so-called three books in the canon were already completed. He said to his disciples: “the Pragmateia, the Book of the Secrets and Book of the Giants are gifts bestowed (written) by the Twin of Light. Other books in the canon is the Great Living Gospel given by the Envoy and the Treasure of Life given by the Column of Glory.” Namely the two books was given by Mediators as Iranian “Manvahmed vazurg (the Great Nous)”, and came later.Therefore the revelation in the three books and other both books each reflects the change of the religious thought of Mani. The former represents his early idea, the latter his later idea.I may conclude that the conception of the Mediator in the revelation of Mani changed gradually from the Jewish Christian or Mandaean Gnosis to the Iranian Gnosis (Twin→the Great Nous.)

This research examined the seismic behavior of medical equipment, which supports advanced hospital functions through shaking table testing and numerical analysis, and derived evaluation index for mitigating damage. The shaking table test observed the rocking and overturning of neonatal beds and a dialysis liquid feeding apparatus under sine waves and the building floor responses during earthquakes. The rocking and overturning damage occurred only when the casters of equipment were all locked, and the ratio between the equipment’s gravity center height (h) and leg width (b), b/h, is smaller than a certain threshold. The influence of equipment dimensions and weight on the seismic behavior was studied by parametric analysis using a distinct element method (DEM) model of equipment. The probability of damage decreased significantly when the ratio between the b/h becomes large. For the floor velocity response of 80cm/s, which is assumed for the approximate return period of 500 years and with the response amplification factor (the ground to floor response ratio) of 1.6, the probability of overturning became negligible when the b/h is 0.4 or larger. This paper also presents an analytical equation to calculate sufficient safety weights added to existing equipment for conforming to the above thresholds of b/h.

17世紀以来, ドイツには参事会図書館に由来する市立図書館があり, 上層特権市民によって利用された。19世紀には下層民衆を対象とする福祉事業的な公立・私立の民衆図書館が各地に生まれたが, 市立図書館と交わるところはなかった。すべての市民が対等に利用するアメリカのパブリック・ライブラリーに接した大学図書館員ネレンベルクは, ドイツの二元体制をなくして, 全市民が平等に利用できる公共図書館を現しようとする運動を進め, 彼ら「図書会館」と名づけたドイツ型パブリック・ライブラリーが各地に生まれた。「図書会館」とは, 公立学校に対応する公立図書館, 公費経営, 法による義務設置, 利用無料, 昼夜開館閲覧, あらゆる階級の利用, 専門職図書館員など, 公共図書館の純粋理念を現する図書館である。この理念は, ナチス支配終了後の公共図書館運動によって本格的な結をみることになる。

Currently a growing interest in Japan is visible all over the world, owing mainly to its economic importance. In Japan herself, “Internationalization of Education” is being advocated more loudly. Among foreign scholars some misunderstandings concerning Japanese education seem to continue because of the lack of information and their failure of cognition. Japan will have to make efforts to introduce her education more positively and more correctly to other countries, in order to deepen international understanding. It goes without saying that verbal communication needs looking in.
