"SPICON" (Spiritual Convention) is one of the most famous events in recent spiritual boom in Japan. In "SPICON" many people including both sponsors and customers enjoy approaching the sacredness through buying things and taking part in sessions which are related to spirituality. Although approaching the sacredness is often accompanied with danger, they seem to devote themselves to "dedication" and yet keep themselves from any trouble and violence. How can they do so? In this paper I intend to verify, by taking "SPICON" as an example, that a new type of safety device for approaching the sacredness is appearing in Japanese society.

Raman spectroscopy provides a meaningful fingerprint for sensing and discriminating materials, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) can dramatically increase Raman signals up to the single-molecule level of sensitivity. Graphene, a monolayer carbon sheet, has recently attracted considerable attention as a unique SERS substrate. However, there are various types of graphene materials, and the SERS application category is significantly correlated to the structure and quality of the graphene. This review provides a broad perspective on this research area, intended for researchers of diverse fields. First, we categorize the graphene-based SERS applications based on their structure. Second, we introduce the types of graphene (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, chemical vapor deposited graphene, and carbon nanowalls) and their synthesis methods. Thereafter, we highlight state-of-the-art studies for each category of graphene-based SERS.

The objective of the study was to explore the impact of the surgery volume on the course and outcome of the papillary thyroid cancer depending on the risk factors. This is a retrospective study with 3,266 successive cases of papillary thyroid cancer registered from 1990 till 2005 in subjects residing in Minsk or Minsk Region at the moment of diagnosing, with a medium observation of 10.2 years. In the group of postoperative patients, 5-, 10- and 20-year cause-specific survival was 99.0±0.2%, 98.0±0.2%, 97.3±0.6%, and cumulative relapse rate was 6.0±0.5%, 8.2±0.6%, 14.3±1.5%, respectively. Life expectancy of patients with papillary thyroid cancer is mainly established by the independent prognostic factors, and not by the volume of surgical intervention, which is related to the early diagnosing of a relapse and timely performed repeated surgery. The key factors defining the risk of death due to cancer are age over 55 years in women (PR=30.08, p<0.0001) , and 35 years (PR=22.15, p<0.0001) in men, presence of distant metastasis (p<0.0001) , and massive extrathyroidal extension of a tumour (p<0.0001) . Metastatic involvement of regional lymph nodes 7.26-fold increases the risk of relapse (p<0.0001) and is a key prognostic factor. Organ preservation surgeries 3.3-fold increase the risk of relapse (p<0.0001) , and absence of lymph node dissection - 2.85-fold (p<0.0001) .Conclusions:1. Age, distant metastasis, and massive extrathyroidal extension are the key independent prognostic factors, which define the risk of death due to papillary thyroid cancer. The age of 55 years for women and of 35 years for men can be more accurately used for division of patients between the prognostic groups.2. Thyroidectomy and bilateral lymph node dissection significantly reduce the risk of relapse, but statistically do not influence the cause-specific survival.3. Presence of metastasis in the regional lymph nodes is a decisive factor of relapse. It testifies to insufficiently removed level III and level IV lymph nodes in case of any signs of their metastatic affection, and requires an extension of the lymph node dissection volume in such patients.

The purpose of this study is to propose a method of a walking assistance by using an exoskeletal system “Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL)” for cerebral palsy (CP) patients who cannot stand up and walk due to the abnormal generation of the bioelectrical signals (BES) in their lower limbs associated with the brain disease, and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through a clinical trial. HAL was developed to support the voluntary movement of the wearer based on the BES. The proposed method consists of two algorithms, that is, an assistance of voluntary movement in the swing phase and an assistance of weight bearing in the stance phase. The assistance of the voluntary movement determines the rotational direction of the actuator from the ratio of the abnormal BES by using sigmoid function during the swing phase. On the other hand, the assistance of the weight bearing adjusts automatically the stiffness and viscosity of the joint during the stance phase. In the clinical walking trial with a 3-meter walk using parallel bars, we confirmed that HAL including the proposed method achieved the patient's walking assistance. Especially, the assistance of the voluntary movement in the swing phase produced his leg-swing based on the BES signals. As a result, the walking speed, cadence and stroke width of the patient with HAL during this trial are 1.6m/min, 11.4 steps/min and 0.14m, respectively. In conclusion, we have proposed the method of the walking assistance method and thus, confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A phrurolithid spider species, Phrurolithus splendidus Song & Zheng 1992, is newly recorded from Japan. This species resembles P. pennatus, but can be distinguished from the latter by male tibial apophysis with thin finger-shaped apex, and spermathecae located behind openings.

症例は60歳男性, 主訴は乾性咳嗽, 胸部X線写真にて右上肺野に腫瘤影が認められ, 気管支鏡検査で気管浸潤を伴う右S1原発の肺癌と診断された. 化学療法 (CDDP+VDS) 1クール, 続いて放射線療法 (50Gy) が施行されたがいずれの療法も奏効せず腫瘍の増大による気管圧迫のため呼吸困難が出現し, また上肢および体幹部に皮膚転移巣が多発した. 救命的にNd-YAGレーザーで気道の開大を行い呼吸困難および全身状態の改善が得られたため, 皮膚転移巣に対してはエタノールの局所注入あるいは摘出を行い退院となった. 外来での経過観察中 (退院時より約2ヵ月間) に残存する全ての皮膚転移巣が消失し, 続いて原発巣も退縮を示した. 現在, 発見から5年経過したが臨床的には腫瘍の再増殖は認められず健在である. 退縮の機転に関しては明らかではないが, 本症例は極めて稀な肺癌の自然退縮例であると考え報告した.

Background: Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential for containing the novel influenza A/H1N1 pandemic. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is an accurate diagnostic method, but it is not routinely available worldwide. We herein evaluated the usefulness of pharyngeal “influenza follicles” in diagnosing seasonal influenza and influenza A/2009 (H1N1) pdm.Methods: Between August 3 and October 29, 2009, we evaluated 87 patients with influenza-like symptoms. Twenty-three had influenza follicles (22 on initial evaluation; 1 on follow-up) while 64 did not. Considering these two groups, we then compared the positive cases using rapid diagnostic testing (confirmed by PCR). In addition, 419 cases of seasonal influenza diagnosed between 2003 and 2009 were examined for the presence of influenza follicles based on Miyamoto's 2007 definition9, and new exclusion criteria were developed.Results: Among the 23 patients with influenza follicles, 21 were diagnosed with novel influenza. Of these, follicles were present on initial evaluation in 20 and on follow-up in 1. None of the 64 patients without influenza follicles were diagnosed with influenza (sensitivity 100%, specificity 97%). Among the 419 patients diagnosed with seasonal influenza between 2003 and 2009, influenza follicles occurred in all type A/H3N2, A/H1N1, and B cases (sensitivity 95.46%, specificity 98.42%). Thus, follicles were considered a specific sign of influenza.Conclusion: Influenza follicles occur in both seasonal and novel influenza. This identification method has higher diagnostic sensitivity and specificity than rapid diagnostic testing and is a promising clinical tool for diagnosing influenza when PCR is unavailable, or in pandemic situations.

A new species of hesionid polychaetes, Leocratides kimuraorum sp. nov., is described based on material collected from the Shima Peninsula and Sagami Bay (middle Honshu, Japan), as well as museum specimens collected from Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, and Shirahama. Leocratides kimuraorum sp. nov. is the third species in this genus and can be discriminated from the two congeners, L. filamentosus Ehlers, 1908 and L. ehlersi (Horst, 1921), by i) the length of the antennae, which are as long as palps, ii) the presence of pharyngeal terminal papillae, and iii) the absence of a papillose peristomial membrane. On the other hand, L. filamentosus, originally described from off Western Sumatra, Indonesia, was also collected from Sagami Bay, and represents a new record of this species for Japanese waters. Partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences from the holotype of L. kimuraorum sp. nov. and newly collected specimen of L. filamentosus are provided for reliable species identification in the future.

情報が錯綜しているチェルノブイリ原子力発電所事故の健康に対する影響について1990年から現地で医療調査に従事して来た経験をもとに紹介する. 10年目に明らかに臨床的に確認された健康傷害は134名の急性放射線症(28名が3カ月以内に死亡)と800名の小児甲状腺癌(3名が死亡)だけである.被曝線量に不確的要素が多いために放射線傷害の調査は続行中であるが, 4~5年で癌の発症が100倍以上になったことは前代未聞であり,現地の癌の発生を予防するためにも一般的な癌発生の機序の研究にも国際的な協力体制が望まれる.

電子教科書に関する規格策定の動きと,その中の1つであるEDUPUBの概要を紹介する。標準規格を策定することで,開発者側にも利用者側にもメリットが生まれ,新たな企業の参入を促すことができる。IEEE,CEN,IMSなどが電子教科書の規格策定に動いているが,IDPF,IMS GLC,W3Cが共同で開発を進めているEDUPUBは対象範囲が広く,かつ実装可能性を高めるために既存規格を極力利用している。また議論中のものも含めてオープンな仕様であり,採用するための参入障壁が低いため,今後有力なフォーラム標準となりうる。ただし,EDUPUBの規格策定は現在進行中であり,今後内容を修正あるいは拡大する可能性がある。

For determining VOCs emitted from bioeffluents, the indoor air collected in the classrooms of the elementary schools and a college were analyzed. As representative VOCs from bioeffluents, 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol (2E1H), Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, and Dodecane were identified and quantified. The concentrations of 2E1H, Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, Dodecane in occupied classrooms were higher than those in unoccupied classrooms. There was a higher correlation between the concentration of 2E1H and the reciprocal of the ventilation rate per person under the occupied conditions. While the higher correlation was also obtained between the concentration of 2E1H and the in-door CO2 concentration in the classrooms, the concentrations of Nonanal, Decanal, Nonane, Undecane, and Dodecane did not correlate with the ventilation rate nor CO2. The 2E1H concentration could be an useful index of the air pollution by human bioeffluents.

図書館蔵書検索サイト「カーリル」は,無料で利用できるWebサービスである。全国の図書館が,Web-OPACにより提供する書籍の所蔵情報を,横断的に抽出し,整理・統合した上で,利便性の高いユーザーインターフェースにより利用者に提供している。カーリルは,楽しい本との出会いを提供し,図書館に足を運ぶきっかけをつくることをコンセプトに開発が進められた。サービス開始時は,主に公共図書館の利用者を対象としたサービスであったが,現在では,大学図書館や専門図書館への対応も進んでいる。本稿では,サービス立ち上げから開発に携わり,現在,エンジニアとしてカーリルの開発マネージャーを担当する筆者の立場から,カーリルの基本的な機能やコンセプト,サービス提供開始以降の進化と,今後の展開について紹介する。

International attention to scientific data continues to grow. Opportunities emerge to re-visit long-standing approaches to managing data and to critically examine new capabilities. We describe the cognitive importance of metaphor. We describe several metaphors for managing, sharing, and stewarding data and examine their strengths and weaknesses. We particularly question the applicability of a “publication” approach to making data broadly available. Our preliminary conclusions are that no one metaphor satisfies enough key data system attributes and that multiple metaphors need to co-exist in support of a healthy data ecosystem. We close with proposed research questions and a call for continued discussion.

ネットワーク社会が急速に形成されつつある今日,人工知能研究は1950年代から今日までの五十余年にわたる1番目のステージを終え,2番目のステージに移りつつある。本稿では,第2ステージの人工知能研究のあり方を議論するため,まず,過去の人工知能研究の流れを回顧し,顕著な成果が大規模探索,知識ベースシステム,言語・音声・画像処理,プランニング,機械学習とデータマイニング,人工知能と芸術との融合であることを指摘する。次に,「すごい」と言わせるくらいの高い問題解決能力を持つ知的エージェントを作ることを目指した従来研究に対して,これからの研究では,ユーザーに「君がいてよかった」と言ってもらえるような高い共感力を持ち,計算知能と人間社会をつなぐコミュニケーション知能の実現にもっと重点を置くべきであることを論じる。
