Background: The free-living protozoan Acanthamoeba is an opportunistic pathogen that is ubiquitous in our environment. However, its role in affecting indoor air quality and ill-health of indoor occupants is relatively unknown. The present study investigated the presence of Acanthamoeba from the ventilation system and its correlation with other indoor air quality parameters, used in the industry code of practice and its potential as an indicator for indoor air quality.Methods: Indoor air quality assessments were carried out in nine commercial buildings with approval from the building management, and the parameters assessed were as recommended by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health. The presence of Acanthamoeba was determined through dust swabs from the ventilation system and indoor furniture. Logistic regression was performed to study the correlation between assessed parameters and occupants\' complaints.Results: A total of 107 sampling points were assessed and 40.2% of the supplying air diffuser and blowing fan and 15% of the furniture were positive for cysts. There was a significant correlation between Acanthamoeba detected from the ventilation system with ambient total fungus count (r = 0.327; P = 0.01) and respirable particulates (r = 0.276; P = 0.01). Occupants\' sick building syndrome experience also correlated with the presence of Acanthamoeba in the ventilation system (r = 0.361; P = 0.01) and those detected on the furniture (r = 0.290; P = 0.01). Logistic regression showed that there was a five-fold probability of sick building syndrome among occupants when Acanthamoeba was detected in the ventilation system.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to compare improvements in swallowing function by the intervention of the Masako maneuver and neuromuscular electrical stimulation in patients with dysphagia caused by stroke. [Subjects and Methods] The Masako maneuver (n=23) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (n=24) were conducted in 47 patients with dysphagia caused by stroke over a period of 4 weeks. Swallowing recovery was recorded using the functional dysphagia scale based on videofluoroscopic studies. [Results] Mean functional dysphagia scale values for the Masako maneuver and neuromuscular electrical stimulation groups decreased after the treatments. However, the pre-post functional dysphagia scale values showed no statistically significant differences between the groups. [Conclusion] The Masako maneuver and neuromuscular electrical stimulation each showed significant effects on the improvement of swallowing function for the patients with dysphagia caused by stroke, but no significant difference was observed between the two treatment methods.

Oxidative stress derived from various etiologies including environmental exposure, life-style changes, and systemic inflammation, can damage pancreatic β-cells, leading to the deficiency of insulin as type 1 diabetes, and also induce peripheral tissues as insulin resistance, leading to type 2 diabetes. Metabolic abnormalities in the body of individuals with diabetes cause mitochondrial superoxide overproduction that in turn activates multiple pathways: polyol pathway flux, increased formation of AGEs (advanced glycation end products), increased expression of the receptor for AGEs and its activating ligands, activation of protein kinase C isoforms, and overactivity of the hexosamine pathway, to generate excessive reactive oxygen or nitrogen species (ROSs or RNSs), which damages multiple organs, resulting in diabetic complications. Diabetic cardiomyopathy can occur independent of vascular disease, although the mechanisms are largely unknown. Current consensus is that the oxidative stress derived from metabolic syndrome causes cardiomyocyte abnormal gene expression, altered signal transduction, and the activation of pathways leading to programmed myocardial cell deaths. The resulting myocardial cell loss thus plays a critical role in the development of cardiac structural remodeling and dysfunction, “cardiomyopathy”. To support the above notion, our studies with in vitro and in vivo animal modes showed the prevention of diabetes and diabetic complications in the cardiomyocytes or transgenic mice with overexpression of antioxidant genes or supplementation of exogenous antioxidants. Among these clinical-translational antioxidants, metallothionein and its upstream nuclear transcriptional factor Nrf2 as well as their potent inducers have been received attention with greatly potential to be applied in clinics for patients with diabetes.

IJFは2001年までは「判定方式」,2002年からは「ゴールデンスコア方式」を採用している。本研究は,2000年から2003年までの4年間に国際柔道連盟が主催した4大会を対象として,試合終了時に両試合者のスコアが同一であった試合の分析を試みた。2000年世界Jrナブール大会と2001年世界選手権ミュンヘン大会,全1,356試合の中で「判定」によって勝敗が決したのは73試合(5,4%)であった。2001年世界Jr済州島大会と2003年世界選手権大阪大会,全1,285試合の中で「GS」によって勝敗が決したのは42試合(3.3%)であり減少がみられた。「判定」によって勝敗が決した73試合を施技ランクB,Cおよび組み手主導権の3項目で比較した結果,審判員の判定が3対0の時にプラスポイントが確認された選手が勝ちとなったのは73,8%であった。一方,2対1の時はプラスポイントでの勝ちが41.9%と減少がみられたことから,全員一致の判定の困難さが窺える。同様の手法で「GS」に入る前の試合分析から,「GS」への移行が妥当と判断されたのは11試合(26.2%)であり,残りの31試合(73.8%)は項目比較によって優劣に差がみられた。「GS」導入によって試合時間は「判定方式」に比べて長くなるが,「判定」に対する「GS」の試合時間比は4分の試合で1.43倍増に対して,5分では1.28倍と減少が認められた。「GS方式」の導入によって,試合終了時に同一スコアとなる試合が激減した。また,実質上の試合時間を抑制する傾向が窺え,延長時間の問題も許容範囲であると言える。「GS」による試合は,罰則よりもポイント取得によって勝敗が決する方向にあり,勝負判定の客観化を推進するためには有効な改正であった。

An architecture of a programmable systolic array processor is proposed for the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). This transform requires a huge amount of data to be filtered. To achieve this, many processor elements (PEs) are implemented. However, the hardware of a multiplier for multiply-accumulate operations is large, and complicated connections among PEs lower flexibility and scalability. By using the time-divided multiple-operation method, the execution unit with a simple structure of shifters and a three-input adder achieved 50% of hardware size and the same performance of that achieved with a multiplier and an adder. The unique network mechanism among PEs and the systolic array architecture provided a high level of data transfer, flexibility, and scalability. Using this architecture enables a processor with ten PEs to execute DWT for 1024×1024 image pixels in 26.3 ms.

Numerous studies have reported that human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUCMSC) therapy can rescue the structure and function of injured tissues. The aims of this study were to explore the protective role of hUCMSC transplantation in a model of accelerated ovarian aging and to compare 2 methods of transplanting hUCMSCs, i.e. i) via intravenous injection (IV) and ii) in situ ovarian micro injection (MI). Female mice were subjected to superovulation and ozone inhalation to create a model of accelerated ovarian aging with a decline in both the quantity and quality of oocytes. Cells were transplanted via IV or MI, and ovaries were removed after 2 weeks or 1 month of treatment. Ovarian reserve and function were evaluated based on the follicle counts, hormone levels, the estrous cycle, and reproductive performance. Cell tracking, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL), real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and Western blot analysis were used to assess the inner mechanisms of injury and repair. Results indicated that ovarian function increased significantly after treatment with hUCMSCs. Immunofluorescence revealed reduced TUNEL staining and a decreased percentage of apoptotic cells. A higher level of expression of anti-apoptotic and antioxidant enzymes was noted in the ovaries of groups treated with hUCMSCs. These parameters were enhanced more when mice were treated with hUCMSCs for 1 month than when they treated with hUCMSCs for 2 weeks. IV was better able to restore ovarian function than MI. These results suggest that both methods of transplantation may improve ovarian function and that IV transplantation of hUCMSCs can significantly improve ovarian function and structural parameters more than MI transplantation of hUCMSCs can.

Because of the lessening number of maintenance experts, a method to rationalize pipe inspection interval is desired. For this purpose, the evaluation method for the pipe integrity in the form of failure probability has been developed based on the Bayesian inference method in the previous paper. In this paper, the previous method is called the linear-Bayes method. The linear-Bayes method assumes wall thinning due to Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) as the principal damage mechanism, and it can define the safety margin of a pipe's residual life depending on the number of inspections. However, the linear-Bayes method ignores the corrosion rate fluctuation against time, which may be caused by the change of environment such as water chemistry and flow velocity. Therefore, the linear-Bayes method may underestimate the failure probability of the pipe segments if the online monitoring of the environments is not used. In this paper, the linear-Bayes method is extended for the wall-thinning model with the corrosion rate fluctuation. The extension is carried out through following two approaches : correction-term and error-term approaches. In this paper, the formulation and the procedure for each approach are shown at first. And then, the accuracy and the merit of the extended method are examined through the evaluation using the artificial and the actual inspection records. Through the examination, it is confirmed that the extended method makes the evaluation of the pipe integrity available in view of safety margin for the corrosion rate fluctuation, keeping the merits of the linear-Bayes method.

We developed a method for direct DNA isolation from phyllosphere microbial communities, designated Direct-DIP. This method comprises DNA extraction from non-shredded leaves with benzyl chloride, and DNA purification by gel filtration. Scanning electron microscopy showed that epiphytic microorganisms were completely removed from the leaf surface after benzyl chloride treatment, while microstructures of the leaf were not damaged. Clear DGGE profiles were obtained regardless of the plant species. Shannon diversity indices of DGGE profiles by Direct-DIP were higher than those by a conventional method. Our findings suggest that Direct-DIP is a rapid, simple, and cost-effective method of extracting DNA from phyllosphere microbial communities.

We describe two unprecedented large (100-member), long-term (61-year) ensembles based on MRI-AGCM3.2, which were driven by historical and non-warming climate forcing. These ensembles comprise the “Database for Policy Decision making for Future climate change (d4PDF)”. We compare these ensembles to large ensembles based on another climate model, as well as to observed data, to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on historical changes in the numbers of record-breaking events, including: the annual coldest daily minimum temperature (TNn), the annual warmest daily maximum temperature (TXx) and the annual most intense daily precipitation event (Rx1day). These two climate model ensembles indicate that human activity has already had statistically significant impacts on the number of record-breaking extreme events worldwide mainly in the Northern Hemisphere land. Specifically, human activities have altered the likelihood that a wider area globally would suffer record-breaking TNn, TXx and Rx1day events than that observed over the 2001-2010 period by a factor of at least 0.6, 5.4 and 1.3, respectively. However, we also find that the estimated spatial patterns and amplitudes of anthropogenic impacts on the probabilities of record-breaking events are sensitive to the climate model and/or natural-world boundary conditions used in the attribution studies.
