In order to reduce the tidal errors in the shallow water region, we established a global ocean tide model (NAO.99b) representing major 16 constituents with a spatial resolution of 0.5°. The key feature of this model is a fine-scale along-track tidal analysis of the TOPEX/POSEIDON data, the results of which are assimilated into a barotropic hydrodynamical model which account for the self-attraction and the loading effect accurately. Also we developed a high-resolution (1/12°) regional ocean tide model around Japan (NAO.99Jb) by assimilating both the TOPEX/POSEIDON data and the data of 219 coastal tide gauges. These models with a computer code for tidal loading calculation have been freely distributed via a web site to whomever interested including eodesits and ocennogrnnhers.

Greek culture has had an enduring influence on the West⁄Western countries. There is an abundance of studies on ancient Greek language as well as philosophy and arts. However, there is comparatively very little reported on the topic of food culture, especially those related to the traditionally celebrated annual events. Therefore, we examined the Greek Orthodox Δωδεκαη´μερο to study the celebratory food culture among the people living in urban areas and in rural provinces of Greece.   The outcome of this study pointed out the following. In the urban areas there is a weakening of observances of traditional customs. This is likely due to diversification of life-style tends to change people′s sense of values. On the other hand, in the rural province, a traditional celebratory food,Kοτο´σουπα, has always been cooked for annual events. It became evident that food culture is influenced by the natural setting as well as by the religious environment that surround various groups of people.

18世紀のイングランドにおけるピクチュアレスクの流行は、クロード・ロランやサルヴァトール・ローザ等の風景絵画に影響を受けると同時に、ウィリアム・ギルピンの活動に代表されるように、イングランド特有の自然や風景、気候などに対する関心を高める契機となった。ピクチュアレスクの流行はイングランド人によるイングランドの再評価を啓発したが、この点で「イングランド性の美的表現」を必要なこととして主張していたオーガスタス・ウェルビー・ノースモア・ピュージンの芸術意識と共通する側面を有していた。実際のところ、ピュージンは19世紀のイングランドにゴシック・リヴァイヴァルの確立を推し進める一方で、前世紀中に異教的芸術の影響下に萌芽的に出現しながら「純粋にイングランド的な美的趣向」として確立されたピクチュアレスクについて言説を残している。その内容からは、ピュージンが正当なピクチュアレスク建築の在り方をゴシック建築の機能主義的デザイン姿勢の派生的な帰結として位置付けていたことが読み取れる。こうしたピュージンのピクチュアレスク理解は、「機能主義的ピクチュアレスク観」と表現し得るものである。

This paper presents a unified analysis of isotropic out-of-plane shear problems with concentric circular elastic inclusions. The applied disturbances considered in this paper are longitudinal shear stress at infinity, analysis is based on the complex variable method using the Möbius transformations by Honein and Herrman. Several numerical examples are given by many graphic representation.

Limonium bellidifolium (2n = 2x = 18), a perennial statice belonging to the family Plumbaginaceae, is cultivated as a garden plant or for cut flowers and is an important breeding material for the production of hybrid cultivars in the genus. In this study, chromosome doubling in L. bellidifolium was attempted to increase the variability in horticultural traits. Seeds of this species were treated with an antimitotic agent, colchicine, at different concentrations and exposure periods. The treated seeds were sown in soil in a cell tray and the seedlings were grown in a greenhouse. More than 50% of the seedlings treated with colchicine for 24 or 48 h, irrespective of the concentration, survived for 4 months after treatment. Most of the seedlings treated for 72 h at any concentration showed very poor growth and abnormal thickening of the hypocotyl, and ultimately died. The surviving seedlings were grown in 9-cm pots. Flow cytometry analysis of leaf tissues showed that 2.5%–5% of plants that received 0.05% colchicine for 72 h, 0.25% colchicine for 24 h, 0.25% colchicine for 48 h, or 0.5% colchicine for 48 h were tetraploid (4x) or mixoploid (2x + 4x). The highest frequencies of tetraploids and mixoploids occurred following treatment with 0.05% colchicine for 72 h. These results showed that colchicine treatment of seeds is effective for chromosome doubling in L. bellidifolium. After 3 years of cultivation, the morphological characteristics of diploid and tetraploid L. bellidifolium plants at the flowering stage were investigated. The stomatal density was lower in all investigated tetraploid and mixoploid plants than in the control diploid plant. The stomatal length was 1.1- to 1.5-fold higher in all tetraploid and mixoploid plants than in the control. Tetraploid plants tended to have wider and thicker leaves than the control and also produced larger flowers.

本研究では、医療機器として欧州市場に参入を果たしたカネカの細胞分離デバイスを分析対象として、次の二点を明らかにする。一点めは、カネカが、既存製品のコンセプトを転換することで、細胞治療に関する新規事業の開拓を達成したことである。そして、二点めは、医療機器メーカーにとっての細胞治療における事業機会の所在である。明らかとなった事業機会の所在に基づいて、成長を期待される細胞治療や再生医療における事業を活性化する政策的支援について、より実用化に近い分野に対して研究開発投資や事業環境の整備を強化することで、新規参入が活性化する可能性を示唆していく。

LTE (Long Term Evolution) に代表される、世界的な移動通信システムの急速な発展を受けて、2020 年を目標とした第5世代移動通信システム (5G システム) の検討が進められている。エリクソンは、人々、知識、デバイス、および情報がネットワーク化される、『ネットワーク化社会』の到来を予測しており、5Gシステムがそのプラットフォームになると考えている。本報告では、今後展開される5Gシステムの標準化プロセスと無線周波数について概説する。

In many secretory cells, cyclic nucleotides and Ca2+ cooperatively or antagonistically control cell responses. Activation of platelets with thrombin caused a rapid breakdown of phosphoinositides and an increase of cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration, which resulted in shape change, secretion and aggregation. The hypothetical concept has recently been proposed that inositol trisphosphate, a degradation product of phosphatidylinositol 4, 5-bisphosphate (PIP2), serves as a second messenger for mobilizing intracellular Ca2+. The effects of cAMP and cGMP on thrombin-induced human pletelet responses were investigated. Thrombin-induced serotonin secretion and aggregation were inhibited by pretreatment with dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) or 8-bromo cGMP (8bcGMP) in a dose-dependent manner. However, shape change was not affected by 8bcGMP. Preincubation of platelets with dbcAMP or 8bcGMP was without effect on the basal level of inositol trisphosphate and free cytosolic Ca2+, measured by fluorescent indicator quin 2, but suppressed their thrombin-induced enhancements. Enhanced [32P] incorporation into phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PIP) and PIP2 was observed with dbcAMP or 8bcGMP treatment, suggesting activation of PI- and PIP-kinases. These results indicate that cGMP as well as cAMP acts as a negative messenger to prevent platelet activation. The inhibitory effect can be explained at least in part by the repression of phospholipase activation, resulting in reduced formation of inositol trisphosphate.

In an earlier paper the variation of melt fraction with temperature near the solidus of a rock with the composition of a garnet peridotite was parameterized as a continuous function of temperature. A number of people have suggested that eutectic melting is a better description of the behaviour near the solidus. Therefore a 'eutectic' parameterization is used here, and requires a finite melt fraction to be produced at the solidus before the temperature can increase further. The resulting changes in melt volumes and compositions are small, and are of similar magnitude to the likely errors in the earlier calculations.

This paper describes simulation-based electronic teaching materials for an Introductory Communication Engineering Course.They include computer graphics animation and audio navigation and explanations. The CG-based interactive simulation content was produced for items difficult for students to understand. Investigation into its usability suggest that (1) virtual experiences through interactive CG on a PC would promote the learning by students, and (2) in addition to visual information, audio navigations, and explanations through synthesized voice would make the electronic teaching materials more effective.

データには無限の可能性が秘められていると我々は考えている.そして,データを効果的に分析することにより,新たな知識発見や,学問や社会の発展に対し他大な貢献が期待できると考えられる.データ量が増えればそれだけこの期待度は高まっていく.さらに,現状はSNS(Social Network Service)データやセンサーデータなどを代表に膨大なデータがリアルタイムに生成されているため,これらのデータを効率的に取得あるいは分析する技術がトレンドとなっている.ゆえに,本稿では,先ずビッグデータの概要について述べ,次にビッグデータに関する代表的な技術について概観した後で,我々の研究事例を通してビッグデータ俯瞰分析の技術や手法の一例について述べる.

The Indian subcontinent and Asian continent first contacted in the late Cretaceous (about 65Ma) and strongly collided after 52 Ma that is evidenced by slowed northward motion of the Indian Subcontinent from 18-20cm/yr to 4.5cm/yr. Although the first record of uplift in Himalayan regions has been recorded during the Eocene, major uplifts of the Himalayan Range and Tibetan Plateau and the subsequent sediment supply started from the Oligocene through Miocene. Particularly, the rapid uplift stages of Himalayan-Tibetan regions have been recognized, at least, around 8Ma and the last 1Ma based on sedimentological and paleonbotanical studies of marine and terrestrial sequences. The micropaleontological studies in marine sequences revealed that the increased elevations in the Himalayan-Tibetan regions forced a strong monsoonal circulation about 8 Ma, which produced intense upwelling around the Arabian Sea and more seasonal climate changes of terrestrial sequences around the southern Asia. The hypothesis that uplift of plateaus and mountains caused large-scale climate changes during the Cenozoic is still unknown. However, an enhanced chemical weathering due to tectonic uplift in the Himalayan-Tibetan regions may be explained as the active driving force of the Cenozoic global cooling at the beginning of 50 Ma.

Cognitive psychology and behavioral economics have shown that humans have cognitive biases that deviate from normative systems such as classical logic and probability theory. Considering that humans have the ability to understand the world from sparse and/or imprecise data, it is natural to assume that the biases in human have some ecological merits in adaptation. We focus on two cognitive biases, symmetry and mutual exclusivity, that are considered peculiar to human. In this study, with the framework of empirical Bayes, we clarify the implication of a model of human causal cognition, the loosely symmetric (LS) model [Shinohara 07]) that implements the cognitive biases. We show that LS has great descriptive validity in inductive inference of causal relationship (causal induction) with a meta-analysis and an experiment in causal induction. The result of another experiment strongly suggests that humans use the inductively inferred causal relationship to decision-making. Then we show that LS effectively works in sequential decision-making under uncertainty (N-armed bandit problems). Operating LS as a simple value function under the greedy method in the framework of reinforcement learning, we analyze its behavior in terms of cognitive biases or heuristics under uncertainty. The three cognitive properties resulting from the loose symmetry, comparative valuation, satisficing, and prospect theory-like risk attitudes, are shown to be the key of the performance of LS. We parameterize the reference for satisficing and show that the quite intuitive parameter enables optimization.

災害列島日本のなかで,災害対応技術のひとつであるレスキューロボットに関心を持ち,学び,そして,研究者にまで育つ若いエンジニア(研究者)を育成することは重要なことである.そのため著者が各種機関と取り組んでいる行っている事業例として「防災リテラシー」,「防災をテーマにしたコンペティション」「防災支援機材の開発」を挙げ紹介し,効果的な防災教育について述べる.
