Generation life table can be constructed by following a cohort of, say, 100, 000 persons from the moment of birth through successive calendar years, recording, in each year of life, the actual number of survivors, until all have been accounted for by death . In order to construct the generation life tables, it is necessary to make use of the data of death rates for the period of more than 100 years. But in the pre-census years, the death reports were incomplete and the populations were domicile, and not census enumeration. Hence these early life tables by the Bureau of Statistics before the census are quite unreliable. Therefore Matsuura and Mizushima attempted to reform these pre-census life tables. We used the estimated values of q0-q100 on the basis of these reformed life tables and many reliable life tables, so that we constructed the generation life tables of persons born in 1895. The tables shown here seem more reasonable and appropriate than those which have been known until the present day.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident, many people are concerned about the contamination of radioactive substances in their ordinary surrounding environment. In this study, we determined the levels of radioactive contamination with 137Cs in towels, very common textile products in our life, after exposing those to the soil collected from a farm field near Fukushima city. Three kinds of towels made from the same cotton fiber with different thickness were exposed to the soil under dry or water-suspension conditions. The radioactivities of 137Cs retained/absorbed were 30-50% of the loaded radioactivity per gram weight of the towel. When their weight and absorbency are taken into consideration, the differences in thickness did not so much affect the above values. Under standard washing condition, which mimic those with household washing machine, almost all the radioactive cesium were removed from the towels contaminated under the dry conditions, whereas only 50-70% were removed when the towels were contaminated under the wet conditions. A commercial soil-release treatment (Preshade-SR) didn't reduce the contamination under both dry and wet conditions, although processing the towels with silver nano-particles did.

The life sciences field is entering an era of big data with the breakthroughs of science and technology. More and more big data-related projects and activities are being performed in the world. Life sciences data generated by new technologies are continuing to grow in not only size but also variety and complexity, with great speed. To ensure that big data has a major influence in the life sciences, comprehensive data analysis across multiple data sources and even across disciplines is indispensable. The increasing volume of data and the heterogeneous, complex varieties of data are two principal issues mainly discussed in life science informatics. The ever-evolving next-generation Web, characterized as the Semantic Web, is an extension of the current Web, aiming to provide information for not only humans but also computers to semantically process large-scale data. The paper presents a survey of big data in life sciences, big data related projects and Semantic Web technologies. The paper introduces the main Semantic Web technologies and their current situation, and provides a detailed analysis of how Semantic Web technologies address the heterogeneous variety of life sciences big data. The paper helps to understand the role of Semantic Web technologies in the big data era and how they provide a promising solution for the big data in life sciences.

It is a common knowledge that the motion of the head plays an important role in applying the Judo throwing techniques. It greatly influences the retention of the posture in the process of the applying the techniques, and also affects the making full use of the power which is needed in the throwing.In this study, we regard the motion of the head, the shoulders, and the hip, which affect very much the throwing, as the rotary motion against the median line; and we try to explain in what way the head, the shoulders, and the hip move and how thiw rotary motion affects the motion of the head in the throwing.The following results was obtained.1) It was observed that in the case of well-trained the body had turned round before the head began to turn at the completion of “Taisabaki” (body turning) and the motion of the head was restrained; but in the case of middle-trained and untrained, the head had turned round before the shoulders at the completion of “Taisabaki” (body turning).2) In the phase of “Kake” (attack) of well-trained, the head turned round at a time, and a angle difference could be observed between the head, the shoulders and the hip; i. e. the head had turned first, the followed the shoulders, and the hip: and this angle difference between the head and the body was smaller than the case of middletrained and untrained. Therefore we could say that the head, the shoulders, and the hip co-ordinated well in this case. But in the case of middle-trained and untrained the angle difference which was observed at the completion of “Taisabaki” (body turning)continued, and it became even larger than it was at the completion of “Taisabaki”(body turning). So in the case of middle-trained and untrained, it was observed that only the head turned round too much in the throwing.3) In the case of middle-trained and untrained, it was observed at the phase of “Kake”(attack) that the position of the hip was too high, so therefore the direction of “Hikite”(pulling hand) was not correct, and “Tsurite” (lifting hand) did not work well, so that the motion of the shoulders was restricted. The motion of the shoulders is important to the effective motion of the head. This motion of the shoulders is influenced by the correct position of the hip and the correct direction of “Hikite” (pulling hand)and the correct way of “Tsurite” (lifting hand).

過去29年間に当科を受診した小児のムンプス難聴49例中,厚生省特定疾患高度難聴調査研究班の作成した診断基準(1987)に基づいて診断した確実例37例を対象として,性差,両耳性,発症年齢,耳下腺腫脹から難聴発現までの日数,前庭症状,初診時聴力検査,治療,治療後聴力検査成績につき検討した。性差は男性20例,女性17例であり,一側性35例(95%),両側性 2 例(5%)であった。耳下腺腫脹から難聴発現までの日数は,耳下腺腫脹の 1 日前~16日後までで,平均6.6日であった。初診時聴力検査では,37例中32例が重度難聴あるいは聾であり,治療にもかかわらず 1 例を除く36例では聴力の改善がみられなかった。当科を受診したムンプス難聴患者数の経時的な増減は,全国のムンプスの流行の時機とよく一致していた。従来の報告と同様,今回の検討でもムンプス難聴の予後は不良であり,対策としては早期の予防接種の定期化が重要である。同時にムンプス難聴の啓蒙活動,小児科医との連携,ムンプスワクチンの質の向上が必要と考えられた。

It has been an important target to realize a sustainable energy usage in the future, regardless of the country. Japan is now compelled to consider a new paradigm of energy policy due to the nuclear power plant failures after March 11, 2011. To discuss the ideal or a favorable future of Japan’s energy, understanding the present status as well as the available energy options in the future will be an initial step, followed by discussion of the issues related to each option. The aim of this article is to summarize the present status of Japan’s energy systems and to clarify the major points of discussions for the realization of future sustainable energy systems. In addition, the major options of both energy supply and demand sides are summarized. The issues for realizing the future energy systems are discussed from the large-scale penetration of renewable systems, the demand side energy management and savings, the mobility, and the centralized electricity grid viewpoints, to provide a common basis for the discussion of future energy systems in Japan.

The present study examined the relationship between rate of abnormal menstrual cycles in women who participated in competitive sports and long-term fertility. Longitudinal menstrual data were collected over 25 years from 33 women who graduated from physical education collegesThe results were as follows:1)Among the 33 women surveyed, the number of pregnancies for each woman ranged from zero to eight; the total number of pregnancies was 85 (mean 2.6). Sixty-five (76.5%) of the 85 pregnancies were carried out to delivery times.2)The rate of spontaneous abortion was 15.3%. Four (12.1%) of the 33 women were infertile.3)In women with fertility-related problems such as infertility, spontaneous abortion, premature delivery, and stillbirth, the rate of abnormal menstrual cycles tended to be higher with increase of the fertility-related problems.4)In women with a high rate of abnormal menstrual cycles during college, the rate continued to be high after graduation.5)In women without fertility-related problems, the rate of abnormal menstrual cycles during college varied widely. Also, the rate of abnormal menstruation decreased less than 30% after graduation, excluding one woman. Conversely, in women with fertility-related problems, the rate of abnormal menstrual cycles was higher than in women without fertility problems both during college and after graduation.6)Changes in menstrual cycle length with age were more different than an individual. In women with fertility-related problems, abnormal menstrual cycles were observed between the ages of 18 and 42, and abnormal cycles were both longer and shorter than normal cycles.The results indicated that, in women who participated in competitive sports during their youth, abnormal menstrual cycles may remain long after retirement from sports. In addition, problems such as infertility and spontaneous abortion were observed to be associated with higher rates of abnormal menstrual cycles.

Low-intensity Kaatsu resistance training performed by patients with moderate vascular occlusion is known to cause skeletal muscle hypertrophy over a short term. In our patients who used such training as a part of their rehabilitation, we have seen the same results, as well as a quenching analgesic effect. Herein, we report the effect of Kaatsu resistance training in a patient with patella tendinitis. The patient was a 17-year-old male who played basketball and came to us with intense pain at the lower edge of the patella in the right knee and was confirmed by an MRI image which showed a high intensity signal in the area of the patella tendon. Initially, we gave a dose of antiphlogistic analgetic, a steroid injection, and prescribed hospitalization for 1 month. Kaatsu resistance training was also recommended in an attempt to prevent muscle atrophy. The vascular occlusion point for the Kaatsu training cuff was the proximal end of the right limb, which had an occlusion pressure ranging from 160-180 mmHg. The exercise components that were used in combination with the Kaatsu training program were SLR, hip abduction, hip adduction, calf raise, toe raise, squat, crunch, back extension, and shooting. The exercise protocol was performed at about 30% of 1RM, with 3 sets of 15 repetitions, 5 to 6 times per week, for 3 weeks. T2 weighted MRI images (axial and sagittal) of the right patella tendon prior to beginning Kaatsu training showed high intensity signals, however, after 3 weeks of Kaatsu training, the signal intensity was reduced and the thigh circumference was increased by 7 mm and 2 mm for the right and left sides, respectively. Further, there was no evidence of muscle atrophy. The present patient was then treated with appropriate anti-inflammatory drugs and 1-month of hospitalization. During that time it was possible to completely relieve the inflammation and avoid muscle atrophy with Kaatsu training, and the patient quickly returned to playing basketball. In conclusion, this low-intensity resistance training was able to be performed without applying excessive load, which may have caused further damage, and we intend to use Kaatsu training with future patients to help them return as early as possible to full activities.

農林水産研究情報総合センターでは各種のAPIを活用した図書館サービスを2003年から展開してきた。本稿では,API導入の目的と運用,またその効果について紹介する。API導入後,農林水産関係試験研究機関総合目録の2012年の検索回数を分析したところ,APIを経由した検索回数は通常のOPACでの検索回数と比較して2倍以上であったなど,利用の増加があった。また,2013年3月に行ったシステム更新においては,国立国会図書館ダブリンコアメタデータ記述(DC-NDL)での出力に対応するなど,Linked Open Data(LOD)への対応に向けた改善を図った。

不登校, ひきこもり, 青少年犯罪など子どもに関する様々な問題はあとを絶たない。これらの要因のひとつとして子どもの社会性の欠如があげられると同時に親子関係の問題も指摘されてきた。日本の親子関係に関する研究は主に乳幼児の発達と母親を対象にしたものが多く, 父親が子どもの社会性にどのように影響しているかについての研究は少ない。さらに就学児の社会性と父親の子育て参加の関連についての研究はほとんどなされていない。米国の研究についても同様なことが指摘される。本稿では父親の子育て参加が就学児の社会性に及ぼす影響に焦点をおき, 母親の子育て参加, 父母の年齢と教育程度, きょうだいの数, 子どもの年齢と性別, そして家族構造などの影響を解明する。日米のデータを重回帰分析した結果, 父親の子育て参加が活発であるほど就学児の社会性が高いことが明らかになった。さらに子どもの社会性に関しては子どもから見た父親の子育て参加が父親自身から見た子育て参加よりもより強い影響を示していることも解明された。

Environmental protection is one of the key issues in the prospective policy and strategy of radiation protection. In this context, numerous efforts have been made for developing the framework for the protection of non-human species from ionizing radiation, especially in European countries and Unite States. The present report summarizes knowledge so far attained on the assessment of doses and radiation impact on marine organisms. Special attention was directed to the methodology for calculating absorbed doses of marine organisms, based on which a case study was also carried out for estimating absorbed dose rate of several species of marine organisms inhabiting in the coastal sea off Rokkasho-Mura, Aomori Prefecture where a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant came into operation.

御蔵島火山ヤスカジヶ森溶岩ドームに分布する「冬に白煙を上げる穴」の成因を明らかにするため,2005年~2006年にかけて温度,湿度計および観測カメラによる連続観測を行った.その結果,冬季には外気より最大で17℃高い温度の空気が穴から噴き出ていること,夏季には逆に外気が穴内部へ吸い込まれていることを確認した.見積もられる放熱量は冬期間で合計約22 GJ程度で,一般的な火山性噴気孔からの年間放熱量に比較して数桁小さい.穴周辺での地中温度計測,周辺河川での水温,電気伝導度およびpH計測からも,火山性の熱水活動の活発化を示唆する値は得られなかった.以上の結果は,穴が火山の熱活動とは無関係な温風穴であることを示唆する.高感度カメラ等の整備が進み,活火山表面の常時監視能力が高まりつつある現在,火山の熱活動とは無関係に白煙を上げる温風穴について,その分布を把握しておくことが重要である.

日本全国から採取した農耕地土壌82試料 (水田土壌37, 畑土壌45) のウラン (U) 及びトリウム (Th) の定量をICP-MSで行った結果, 水田土壌中のU及びTh濃度の幾何平均値はそれぞれ2.75mg kg-1及び5.56mg kg-1, 畑土壌中ではそれぞれ2.43mg kg-1及び5.17mg kg-1と, これまでの測定値の範囲内の濃度であり, かつ水田土壌と畑土壌間では有意差はなかった。更にU/Th比を計算すると, 水田土壌で0.53, 畑土壌で0.49となり, 日本の地殻 (0.28) , 非農耕地土壌 (0.23) や河川堆積物 (0.20) に比べて有意に高いことがわかった。主に農耕地土壌に施肥されるリン鉱石を原料とするリン酸肥料に含まれるUが全U濃度上昇に影響していると考えられた。そこでその寄与分を施肥が行われていない非農耕地土壌のU/Th比を用いて算出したところ, 現在の日本の水田土壌中のUは平均50% (4~78%) が, 畑土壌では平均48% (4~74%) となり, 日本の農耕地の半分は施肥により人為的に添加されたUであることが推定された。

The existence of intrinsic vertical effects of spinning gyroscopes was examined systematically from the viewpoint of precise measurement, using three types of gyroscopes with largely different characteristics. The most precise weighing techniques, such as a reference tare system and various countermeasures, were applied. Slight and symmetrial mass changes observed in the experiment were explained as the parasitic effect of the balance due to the torque of the spinning gyroscopes, utilizing the attenuation constant change under atmospheric conditions. Consequently, the intrinsic vertical effects were found to be virtually zero in this experiment, and even if existent, were estimated to be neither greater than +0.7mg nor less than -0.5mg at a 99% confidence level for the angular momentum of 0.936kg·m2/s.
