In terms of practical view, the type of aphasia can be classified by four elementary symptoms: anarthria (apraxia of speech), phonemic paraphasia, word comprehension impairment, word finding difficulty. Each elementary symptom has been established by causative lesion: anarthria for lowed posterior part of the left precentral gyrus, phonemic paraphasia for the left marginal gyrus and underlying white matter, word comprehension impairment for the left middle frontal gyrus or the posterior part of superior and middle temporal gyrus (the area called Wernickle's area), word finding difficulty for the left inferior frontal gyrus or the left angular gyrus or the left posterior part of the inferior temporal gyrus. In addition to ordinary estimation of language some devised examination enables distinction of the symptoms due to frontal lesion and the symptom due to the posterior lesion. This methods taking advantage of the symptoms related apahasia is also useful for making diagnosis and knowing prognosis of progressive aphasia.

A 3-year-old French bulldog presented for evaluation of recurrent swelling and a fistula on the right cheek after a dog fight. A large volume of serous fluids was identified on the wound immediately after atropine drops. A diagnosis of parotid salivary duct rupture secondary to trauma was made. On surgical exploration, the thickened proximal segment of the severed duct was identified and circumferentially double ligated with 3-0 silk. No evidence of swelling and normal appearance of the parotid salivary gland was identified 4 months postoperative recheck. No further problems were noted 10 months postoperatively phone-call. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first reported case of successful proximal parotid duct ligation of parotid salivary duct rupture secondary to non-iatrogenic trauma.

This paper describes an electroencephalogram (EEG) response while imaging music with and without listening to it. It is reported that, by performing actions (such as singing, imaging, etc.) in synchronization with music, we can feel more pleasant than when not performing these actions. We think that emotions (such as pleasantness, sadness, etc.) may be different between imaging music with and without listening to it. Taking these issues into consideration, we investigate activated parts of the brain while listening or not listening to known and unknown music to explore the source of emotions evoked by past experiences. As a result, the visual cortex is activated while listening to known music, but it is not activated while listening to unknown music. In conclusion, we know that the subjects tend to perceive known music more visually when imaging music with listening than when doing without listening to it. This may suggest that the activation of visual cortex is related to the emotions evoked by past experiences.

DCモータの速度制御系をアナログ回路で構成した実験装置を用い,そのステップ目標応答データからDCモータの伝達関数を推定する方法を示した.なお,閉ループデータは,ディジタルオシロスコープで取得した制御器出力,モータ電機子電流およびモータ速度である.実験装置のモータ速度は,制御対象であるDCモータと同じものを速度発電機として使用したため,取得されたデータは,ブラシ・整流子によるノイズが比較的大きいものであったにもかかわらず,提案法で良好な推定結果が得られた.

Crohn病の病因はいまだ不明で,遺伝的素因,感染,食事因子,血流障害,免疫学的異常といった観点から研究がなされてきた.特に,単球・マクロファージ系細胞の機能異常および管腔より侵入した外来抗原に対する免疫反応の異常が,肉芽腫や潰瘍,瘻孔などの病変を形成するという考えが有力となっている.初期治療として栄養療法が有用であるが,再燃や進展を防ぐには,免疫学的異常をふまえた適切な免疫統御療法が必要となる.

A conception of ‘technological order’ is proposed to understand the interactions between informational technology and ‘network’ like industrial organizations, which would lead to the accumulation of technology and capital in the ‘informational capitalism. ’ This new form of capitalism has been characterized by Manuel Castells as “the production of knowledge by knowledge. ” By means of the investigation of the recent literatures on the economics of innovation and industrial organization, in addition to empirical research concerning the technological development and socio-economic changes in biotechnology, it is postulated that ‘configurational’ ontogeny of the technology and the tight protection of intellectural property have played an important role in affording the inter-firm collaborations in R & D, hence creating a ‘technological order’ in which technical knowledge is exchanged, combined, and accumulated.

Objectives: First steps to promote the proper use of medicines in remote islands and rural areas are as follows: (1) recognition of the profession of “pharmacist” from secondary-remote-island residents who do not have a pharmacy or drugstore or the opportunity for pharmacist contact and (2) an understanding by remote-island residents of the advantages of having a “family pharmacist.”Methods: Repeated “medicine information and consultation sessions” for secondary-remote-island residents of Japan’s Nagasaki Prefecture were held.  Residents were then surveyed for changes in awareness of or demand for pharmacists and the nature of such changes.Results: Before the information sessions, 29.7% of residents did not recognize the profession of pharmacy, but the extent of their recognition increased after information sessions were concluded.  They were asked “Who explains medicines in a way that is easy to understand ?”; more than half responded “doctors” before the information session, but after information sessions were concluded, those who said “pharmacists” increased.Conclusion: Conducting “medicine information and consultation sessions” for residents of secondary-remote islands and rural areas enabled them to understand the profession of pharmacy.  The initiatives in the present study are first steps toward promoting proper use of medicines by residents of remote islands and rural areas who use “family pharmacies/pharmacists.”

Objective: The subjects of this study were consumers with cold-like symptoms who visited drugstores to purchase OTC drugs.  The purpose was to elucidate the factors that influence the intention of these consumers to consult pharmacists or sellers.Design: Analytic observational studyMethod: We conducted a survey of consumers who visited pharmacies or drugstores for cold-like symptoms.  Pharmacists and registered sellers (hereafter “pharmacists or sellers”) utilized tools to serve them, entering details in customer records.  We handed postcards to these consumers asking them to respond to questions about the prognosis and the degree of satisfaction about the service they had received.  We then used the customer records and follow-up results to perform linear regression analysis with “I would like to consult the pharmacist or seller again” (hereafter “desire for consultation”) as the dependent variable, and the usefulness of the advice and degree of satisfaction about the explanation and service as the independent variables.Results: We analyzed the data of 81 consumers for whom we were able to match the customer records and postcards.  The linear regression analysis indicated that “the usefulness of the advice (coefficient of standardization: 0.73)” affected the desire for consultation most, followed by “the degree of satisfaction about the service (coefficient of standardization: 0.24).Conclusion: We verified that, in self-medication assistance, advice that lets consumers feel the consultation was actually “helpful” by focusing on individual needs, and good customer service were necessary to increase the desire for consultation with pharmacists or sellers, and to encourage actual consultation.

Assessment of biological potency and its comparison with clinical effects are important in the quality control of therapeutic glycoproteins. Animal models are usually used for evaluating bioactivity of these compounds. However, alternative methods are required to simplify the bioassay and avoid ethical issues associated with animal studies. Negatively charged sialic acid residues are known to be critical for in vivo bioactivity of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). In this study, we used capillary zone electrophoresis, a charge-based separation method, to estimate the sialic acid content for predicting in vivo bioactivity of rhEPO. In vivo bioactivities of rhEPO subfractions were measured and compared with sialylation levels. The results obtained indicated that in vivo bioactivity of rhEPO is not simply correlated with the sialylation level, which suggests that it is difficult to predict biological potency from the sialic acid content alone. N-Glycan moieties as well as sialic acid residues may have a significant impact on in vivo bioactivity of rhEPO.

化学構造データベースは、化学に関する研究情報の蓄積・公開には必須のシステムであるが、商用システムは導入・運用コストが高く、大学などの研究機関にはあまり普及していなかった。非営利研究機関向けライセンスやオープンソースソフトウェアの登場により、大学などでの利用も可能にはなったが、実用に供するシステムを開発するには大きな労力が必要である。一方、システム開発の効率化のためにアジャイル開発が注目を集めている。我々は、アジャイル開発と親和性の高いWebフレームワークであるDjangoに注目し、DjangoとRDKit database cartridgeの組み合わせによる化合物データベースシステムの開発を試みた。我々の研究は、コンピュータプログラミングについての知識のない薬学部の学部学生が、短期間で実用的な化学構造検索システムを開発可能であることを示し、DjangoとRDKit database cartridgeの組み合わせによる化学構造データベースシステム開発の有用性を明らかにした。

立体配座探索にはMerck社からの報告に代表される分子力場(MM)計算が一般に使用されている。ところが、日本の製薬企業に協力して水素結合を有するキラル医薬候補分子の解析を進めたところ、三割以上予測赤外円二色性(VCD)スペクトルが実測のものを再現しない結果が得られた。そこで、共通するSMARTS記法で表されるフラグメントをもち自由度が高い分子にむけて、フラグメント分子のデータベースの中から立体配座探索を行い、密度汎関数法計算のための初期構造を自動作成するプログラム(ConfFragGeneration)を構築した。フラグメント分子であるcyclohexyl nonanoate の立体配座データからキラル分子であるcholesteryl pelargonateの初期構造を自動作成し、コレステリック液晶状態の赤外円二色性(VCD)解析を行った。

fragment-based drug designでは、従来実験手法により活性フラグメントを同定し、それらのフラグメントを組み合わせて化合物設計を行う。近年、活性フラグメントの同定や化合物設計に用いる実験手法の代替案として計算機手法を用いることが期待されている。計算機的手法でフラグメントを同定する場合、数多くの候補フラグメントの数が同定され、その組み合わせは爆発的な数となる可能性がある。この全ての組み合わせに対して計算機手法による化合物設計を行うことは、計算コストが非常に高く、組み合わせを絞り込むための計算コストの低い手法が必要である。そこでフラグメント組み合わせの選択条件を検討するために、我々はフラグメントライブラリから取り出した全ての3個の組み合わせが既知化合物および物理化学特性を特定した化合物中に存在するかどうかを解析した。

ミドリムシ(Euglena gracilis) は、嫌気条件下においてバイオジーゼルの燃料の原料となるワックスエステルを生合成し、細胞内に蓄積することが知られている。しかしその調節メカニズムについてはいまだ不明な点が多い。本研究では、トランスクリプトームデータのもとづいてベイズアノバ法によりミドリムシにおける代謝動態におけるシステム解析を行った。

生物が生合成する揮発性化合物(VOC)には、化学生態学およびヒトの健康に関わる活性を有し重要な役割を担っている。しかしこのような情報は、さまざまな科学文献に散在する状況になる。そこで、VOCの生物活性に焦点をあてたデータベースの構築すすめた。本研究では、収集したデータの体系的理解を目指して、ケモメトリクス解析を進めた。
