We developed a method for initial region segmentation based on the mixture Gaussian model. First, the distribution parameters corresponding to objects in a scene are estimated from intensity histograms by using the EM algorithm. Next, the range parameters for region segmentation are determined by using the estimated distribution parameters. Finally, that images are segmented by using these range parameters. Experimental results obtained by using real scenes from a PC program showed that the method was effective for the initial region segmentation task. This method can be used in a variety of object recognition systems applied for various industrial applications, including surveillance, in fixed ground sub-systems of intelligent transport systems (ITS), and in welfare support systems.

現場での要求から、障害のある青年、特に情緒障害や知的障害のある青年の心理的問題を解明するために、本研究が企てられた。情緒的問題、知的障害を伴なった青年の発達を、健常青年のこころの発達に対する、ある種のバリエーションとして、位置づけようと考えている。第4報に引き続き、この第5報では、Blosの青年期の発達分類における「青年期後期」、およそ18歳から20歳ころにあたる時期と青年期から成人期への移行期である「後青年期」、およそ20歳以降から30歳ころまでの時期について、健常の場合を述べた。その際、理論のみに偏らないように事例をできるだけ多くとりあげた。 第4報と同様、論述を具体的にするために、事例をたくさん引き合いに出す。しかし、差し障りのない事例以外は、特定の事例をさしているわけではなく、これまでの私の事例経験などから創作している。いくつかの事例を繋ぎ合わせ、変更も加えたりした。青年期の課題を典型的に表現するように、また本来の問題点を歪曲しないように工夫した。This study is attempted from the needs in the school of mental handicapped children. Many teachers and parents want to know about the mentality of their adolescents with mental handicap. Their Mentality should be placed as the variation of the mentality of normal adolescents. According Blos'es classification this fifth report is the development of late adolescence and post adolescence, namely, pre-adulthood illustrated. To avoid the abstract theory several cases are adopted, About the ego identity by Erikson is also discussed.

本研究では心理学的にどのような警告音が人々の適切な判断や行動を促進するのかを検証するために、音によって知覚される緊急性を操作し、難しい認知課題の遂行に与える影響を明らかにする実験を行った。実験では「音刺激によって同じ刺激に対する反応を切り替える」という場面を想定し、ストループ様サイモン課題を用いた。課題遂行中に提示される音刺激(緊急性高/低)を合図に課題の難易度(難/易)を切り替えるように教示した。その結果、緊急性が高い音の呈示後3試行において、課題の難度が高いとき、反応時間及びエラー率が増加した。このことから、音の緊急性知覚の処理と課題遂行に必要な注意資源が共有されている可能性を指摘することができた。緊急性の高い音の近く処理に多くの資源を消費されてしまうと、難しい課題遂行に必要な注意資源が枯渇し、課題遂行に干渉すると考えらえる。

新しいデータ転送コンセプ卜"Netwarp"を提案する。Netwarpはファイル転送のスルプットをGbpsクラスに高速化し、映画のような巨大ファイルを瞬時転送するものである。例えば、映画を2時間かけてrealtime転送するのではなく、10秒以内といった短時間にユーザの手元へ一括転送る。転送完了後、ユーザは自身のVideo diskにアクセスするかのように自在に映画を楽しむことができる。

In 1994 and 1995, hydrangea phyllody occurred in Tochigi, Shizuoka and Oita Prefectures, Japan. The affected plants (Hydrangea macrophylla and H. serrata) showed phyllody and proliferation of flower organs, as well as stunting and dieback. Electron microscopy revealed the presence of phytoplasmas in the phloem sieve elements of affected sepals and leaves. The phytoplasmas were transmitted to healthy Catharanthus roseus by graft inoculation. Using primers for 16S rDNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA fragments of 1.3 and 0.75kbp were amplified in DNA samples extracted from affected hydrangeas but not in those extracted from healthy plants. This is the first report on the occurrence of hydrangea phyllody in Japan.

The current study aims to enhance students' intrinsic motivation in different achievement levels (TOEIC 420 level, 550 level, and 690 level). In more detail, the purposes of this study are as follows: (1) to enhance intrinsic motivation to listening activity of three groups; (2) to enhance intrinsic motivation to speaking activity of three groups; (3) to enhance intrinsic classroom motivation of three groups. This study further explores facilitating factors of intrinsic motivation. Thus, this article also aims (4) to examine which psychological need (the need for autonomy, competence or relatedness) plays the most significant role in students' motivational development. 138 university students who were enrolled in a first-year English language course participated in this study. The intervention was given to them for fifteen weeks. The questionnaires were administered three times (at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the intervention). The data were collected in both qualitative and quantitative way and the results were discussed with educational implications.
